SENSATIONAL SEIDER & RED WINGS ROAD TRIP RECAP – Winged Wheel Podcast – Nov. 5th, 2025
[Music] Welcome to the Wing Wheel Podcast, the number one source for news, analysis, and discussion on the Detroit Red Wings, the NHL, and all things hockey. Here are your hosts, Ryan Hannah, Brad Krisco, and Evan Lopsinger. [Music] Ryan, you’ve aged. I forgot about that. That’s right. I I have to say the worst part of my birthday every year is when I get the text from Brad saying happy birthday. What time was it at? 9 in the morning. Wow. He This dude does not miss, man. Wow. This show is going to go a 100red years. And the only reason it’s going to go a hundred years is because you and I, Evan, are going to keep it going out of spite in hopes that one year Brad forgets just one of our birthdays. And for those of you who don’t know the lore here, early on, I don’t know how long ago it was. It could have been 3 years or 10 years. Honestly, it all feels the same at this point, but Evan and I both forgot to wish Brad a happy birthday that year. It just it it didn’t happen. I don’t know when before I figured out how to use a calendar. Yeah. Like a month a month ago. Yeah. Cuz didn’t weren’t you a week ahead of it this year? Yeah, for some reason my phone gave me a week early notification. Like I wouldn’t even do that for Catherine. Every time I’m like, “Please, Brad, please just like in my head I’m like praying the night before. Please forget. I just can’t have him win. We can’t end the show with him winning. He’s certainly not going to forget two birthdays, so we just have to go out on a tie. But no, this this guy is the same way he knows the handedness of every NHL player he’s ever witnessed play hockey and a freaky amount of hockey stats and lore. Like that’s your Rainman thing. Birthdays. No, you just got to have it fall on a weekend where one of my kids has a tournament because then I don’t look at my phone all day. That’s every weekend. No. Yeah. Well, you had your birthday on what was it? Tuesday. Tuesday this week. I didn’t choose. Tuesdays are slow. I I’m not going to miss on a Tuesday. a Friday or a Saturday in the middle of hockey season. 5050 at best. I wonder what Well, it wouldn’t be on a weekend next year, but yeah, you’re in June. In like five years, it’ll be on the weekend. We’ll we’ll test this theory out. I think we figured out that the 40th is going to be on like a either Friday or something. Anyways, we’ll we’ll fit one day. You’re getting close to 40. Eh, no. No, I’m not like you. Although, boy, do I feel it. Anyways, thanks. And you’re a terrible friend for remembering. Yeah, no problem. The more the angrier you get about it, the more likely I’m to not miss because then I will just start doing it out of spite. Yeah, the response was genuine. I wasn’t I wasn’t happy. I was like, “Hey, thanks for being a good friend and also piss off.” Well, to be fair, I didn’t just say happy birthday. I did call you a [ __ ] in that message. As you should. I’d be concerned if you didn’t. All right. The Red Wings have played hockey. The Red Wings are going to be playing hockey coming up and there’s a lot to talk about on that front. So we recorded Sunday morning and Sunday night was game four of five on this road trip. And oh my is this the hardest road trip in terms of just like staying up to watch the games in a long time does it feel like or maybe that’s just me getting it’s easy for me. Oh yeah you’re that’s my time now. That’s Sully’s Witching Hour. That’s right. We’re watching I was telling you guys we’re watching tornado videos and we’re watching the Red Wings games. It’s perfect. Similar amount of thrill depending on which one you’re watching. Yeah, it’s true. So the Red Wings take on the San Jose Sharks, the lowly San Jose Sharks. And you know, watching that team, there’s a big difference watching the Sharks play to watching the Golden Knights play. And Detroit ends up winning 3-2 in a shootout in a game where they probably again should have closed it out in regulation. I think the summary for it all is you’re not going to complain about a loss, especially that deep into a road trip. You understand where the legs are and where the, you know, the energy level is and you haven’t been home in a while in your own bed. So, you’ll take the win, but I think they played down a little bit to the the Sharks, but they still stole away the the two points in the end. So, I think all in all, you can’t complain too much, but it definitely was an up and down game. Well, first of all, they were playing a former Red Wings goalender, and there was a couple Sharks players who had yet to score their first NHL goal. So, a couple things that happened that game were very predictable that helped San Jose get to overtime cuz I don’t remember Ned playing that well while he was in Detroit at the beginning for like five games. Yeah, he did. After that, he made a lot of 10 bell saves against the Wings Sunday night. I I don’t know. I felt like Detroit controlled that game for 58 of the 60 minutes. It wasn’t like they were laying a beatd down, but they were not giving much up to San Jose. They were getting their chances much like earlier in the year. They were having a problem converting their chances. Mhm. Lot of miss nets, couple post, lot of big saves from Nadulkovich. Like a full windmill glove save on Dylan Lurin. Come on now. Like how often is that going to happen? What a beauty. So, it’s just that perfect storm of, you know, you run into a hot goalender, a young team, you dominate the game, and then late in the third, oh, you haven’t scored an NHL goal yet. Here, we’re going to have five guys stare at the puck behind the net. Just get open. Yeah, it was That’s the moment I was thinking about when I’m like, you kind of just That was a preventable one. Like, you’re you’re a better team than that. Yeah. Like, the first goal they allowed was a deflection off a rush. like sure not great but you see those goals a h 100 times a year it’s like okay whatever guy got a stick on it good play it happens a second goal given a the score the time in the game and all that other stuff was just inexcusable so it was one insanely bad mistake from about four or five players on the ice allowed San Jose to get that game to overtime in a game where they probably had no business getting to overtime. Yeah. Yeah. I I think your your assessment there is more correct. It was like Detroit was very obviously the better team and they kind of let it get away in a small moment or two and then Nadelovic made up the difference. The goalending was excellent all game really. Lucas Raymond open scoring in the second period kind of woke everyone up and that was a beautiful goal. pass from Sandine Pelica. Lurin with the secondary assist, but Raymond dodges the the check, has a cut back, and just absolutely rips one home. And Lucas Raymond is looking more and more confident and back to full strength every single game that passes. Yeah, that was a shot. The way Nadulkovich was playing, the only way it felt like you were going to beat him was if you absolutely threw a piss missile bar down. And well, the Red Wings did that twice, but that was the first one that went, “Okay, well, if that’s how you’re going to shoot, yeah, it gives you a little more confidence, you might actually pull this one out.” And then the second goal to again give Detroit a 2-1 lead was Moider officially gets his first goal of the season. So, last episode we talked about the goal that was called off for reasons unbeknownst to us, but his shot gets through from the point assisted by Edmonson and Debrinket, and you could see the kind of relief, not just on Cider. Everyone was really pumped for him. Like he’s been having a great season and the production was due. Nice to see Cider breakthrough for his first. Then as Brad said, Sam Dickinson scored with what was it? Threeish minutes left in the third period to tie the game, his first goal of his NHL career. And the San Jose Sharks, that’s how they sent that one to overtime. Yeah, that was probably the one moment of the game that was a pretty tough watch for the Red Wings. Yeah, that lot of guys blew coverages there and just had pretty poor recognition. The shootout after an overtime that doesn’t see anything go through. The shootout was Lucas Raymond saved, Maline Cabbrini saved, Alex Debrink saved, Will Smith saved, Lurin saved, Kersev saved. I was like, “Oh my god, battle at champions here. Can someone please?” And then JVR comes in, puts in what eventually is a game-winning goal in the shootout. And Cam Talbot continues to be a beast in the shootout. Just overall this season has been the, you know, best story in the Red Wings net so far and seals the win for Detroit. So they get their two points. Again, a game where Detroit did dominate, but just San Jose broke through how they could. You wish it was in at least overtime, if not regulation, where you know they could have done it. But I think the difference is in previous seasons, I mean actually I can think of games specifically against San Jose, they would have lost games where it’s like you know you’re the better team and you outplayed them for good chunks of time and then you let it get away from you. The difference is now Detroit is scrging up these points. So we’re talking about two shootout wins now on this road trip where you’re like, “Oh man, it would have been it’s you’re happy there’s a win, but it would have been nice if it was a win in regulation.” That is a big step in the correct direction compared to previous years where it’s like, oh man, you were leading with five minutes left and then you ended up losing in overtime or losing in regulation or something stupid like that. And at least there’s some consolation and well, you gave up a needless point, but it was to a Western Conference team. So at least it which is essentially like they’re a nonfactor. Yeah. In the West either way. Yeah. All that really matters is like, okay, you lose a win off the regulation win tiebreaker metric, but it’s early. It’s too early to be counting those too tightly, but Detroit is still good on that front so far. How about the battle between Cider and Celbrini, though? That was cool to see. That was one of those moments where you like step away from being a fan of either team and you’re like, the next generation of of hockey stars are this is going to be good. Well, the best part of that whole sequence was the penalty box after. Have you seen the clip of I think it’s Chris Rock sitting next to the Lakers bench telling Kobe Bryan a story and Kobe has a thousand yard stare not even paying attention to him you know mouth halfway open just he’s in another realm. Mhm. That’s all I could think of watching Mo Sider just stare off into space as celebr yelling at him from the other box. They were talking a little bit like they they were having a conversation. Then you can see Sadder just go all right with this here. I am not I am completely shameless in my you know fanaticism as just a hockey fan objectively for Mlin Celbrini though like the way that kid plays like he plays pick any skilled player who has a you know physicality or an attitude or buying in issue over the last 10 years. I guarantee you their coach is now going to point to Mlin Celebrating the way he plays. Like he has all the same talent you do, but he plays like an absolute grinder. Like that kid is the truth. Good for San Jose, and I’m very happy that they’re not in in the East. So that’s Detroit. That was their third win of the road trip. And then between games, they actually sent down Austin Watson. And so I know we had a conversation about, you know, Watson was called up to be the extra body, maybe some depth if they they needed it. It looks like, you know, they knew the the group that they wanted to go with with Vegas and he was just insurance in case of injuries. So they sent him back down to Grand Rapids and all is calm on that front in terms of call-ups so far. Nothing doing on the the Danielson front just yet. Wasn’t really expected on the road trip anyway. So Detroit heads into Vegas on the evening of November 4th. Oh, it wasn’t a like it wasn’t a bad game. I I think both teams played really really well actually. Like that was one of Detroit’s better games on the road trip. It just turns out they’re playing what may be as of right now the cut favorite in the Vegas Golden Knights. They only allow one goal. A really tight checking game. I thought Detroit had a lot of structure. I was really kind of impressed in terms of what they limited the Golden Knights to for stretches there. Although I do think the Golden Knights were the better team. It’s not like they destroyed the Red Wings. And so a one- nothing loss in the end. Are you disappointed? Yeah. But you’re not going to win all 82. You won three of five on the road trip. And I thought if you’re going to lose to anyone, one- nothing against one of the best teams in the league, if not the best team in the league right now. You’ll take that result if you’re going to try to find moral victories. I flinch still when I hear that. I know. It’s nice to use the phrase, but not, you know, trying to draw blood from a stone. Like, it’s a real thing this time. Yeah. The whole running joke of yours, enough moral victories, we need actual victories. A little easier to stomach when that loss brings you to nine and five and not like two and eight. Yeah. Yeah. But with on the front of the moral victories, I think two important things came from that. One being, okay, this team can for all intents and purposes, I know they got the one goal, shut down one of the top offenses in the league, if not the top offense in the league to this point in the season. You know, Eel’s got to be the front runner for the heart at this point. He’s having an unreal season. Yeah, Dorf’s on pace for like 120 goals and six assists. Are we sure that’s not just Ovetchkin? No, he shoots left. [Laughter] God, this guy. But on the other front, Gibson, every good game he can string together is only going to help his confidence and get him going forward because we we’ve given and heaped praise upon Talbot this year. But Gibson hasn’t been awful, but he hasn’t had many great moments. So to see him put together a game like that against a team like that though he looks uncomfortable at times but I think that’s just always who he’s been. Yeah. Just make the save and he had a good game. So that’s at least something else to build off of. Yeah. Let’s talk about Talbot and Gibson. It’s like you can think of moments where Talbot has absolutely stolen a game or where Gibson has strung together, you know, a game like the Golden Knights game or games like how he did after he started for the first time after his terrible, you know, home opener performance. But then you look at the stats and there’s also, you know, coming into a good chunk of this road trip, a lot working against the Red Wings in terms of like five on five goals saved above expected or whatever goalending metric. like they’re not really getting help from the goalending to the order where like that’s why the results are coming in. And I think things have changed a little bit since, you know, those those numbers were floating around. But by and large, yeah, you’re right, Brad. Like nothing’s really been phenomenal. And then you think about it, you’re like, “All right, Gibson’s coming in new team. He kind of is that style of goalie.” Like we we heard about his the way he sits in the net and and how he holds his frame and rebound control and things like that. He does look uncomfortable. Like at points in that Vegas Golden Knights game, I was like, you’re a little bit worried that this might start to get through him and then get through him a lot in one game, but he did hold it together to his credit. So the optimistic view here is that as he gets settled in, he’ll only become more solid. And Cam Talbot’s just like he’s just him this year. Early season, Cam Talbot is just so good. And you you don’t expect a regression to the mean in terms of goalending. We have seen the Red Wings stay well below the mean in terms of goalending for pretty much the entire lifespan of the decade plus of this podcast, but between those two, you can be optimistic that it may happen this time. And if you’re already near the top of your division and you’re 9 and five and some really good performances and you’re playing good hockey with goalending not absolutely saving the day to say the least, game in and game out, I think that’s a good position to be in. You do want it to get better, but it’s a really good foundation. Yeah, it’s nice to know that there’s room for improvement. We’re not sitting here being like the Red Wings goalies are due for a massive regression. They are stealing games that the Red Wings do not deserve to win. They’re playing way above their head. Yeah, we’re on the other side of that coin right now. I think the Red Wings are very lucky to have a 1A 1B type situation right now where Gibson had a, you know, badge showing in his the home opener and Cam Talbot came in and was fairly rock solid for every game he’s played so far. So, we’ve seen iterations of this team where they’ve got one goalie and then they go to James Rhymer and it’s like, what are we getting? It’s a coin flip at best. what what we’re going to get that night. So, yeah, right now I don’t know if saying we should expect more from them, but I don’t think it’s unfair to say that. No, I don’t think it’s unfair. It the the Red Wings don’t absolutely need more. Like I think they are playing it’s fine. You know, if this is how it was for the rest of the year, I would say the goalending has been just fine. where I get a little bit of concern with the goalending because even if you look at the advanced metrics, they’re as a tandem bottom 10 in the league, but Talbot’s been so good, but we’ve seen this before and at his age, you know, he’s going to have a couple rough patches this year. Yeah, he can’t play 42 45 games. He He’s going to have a stretch. And when he has those rough patches, they need Gibson to come in and be closer to what he was last night than what he’s been the rest of the season. and he’s going to need to be able to string it together for two, three, four games in a row at some point. Fully agree. And and that’s that’s the thing. It’s like I think if you put this level of goalending on previous versions of the Red Wings, you can make a good argument that they might have made the playoffs in those years. But again, as Evan said, it’s early and come the new year, at some point, Cam Talba, despite being the most in shape player maybe in the NHL, he isn’t going to be able to play as well in game 38 as he did in games 4, 6, and nine, you know, so you need Gibson to step up by then and just really be settled in. So, yeah, the Vegas game, great step. And not every game is going to be perfect, but it was good enough honestly. Like it held the gold nice to one goal. Yeah, there was a second goal that was rightly called back for offside review. And so it wasn’t really a goal. That’s sounds like they cheated. Ah, look at that. Brad Krisco in favor of the offside review. Never thought I’d see the day. Only when it goes in our favor. I I was really actually impressed because that was you can bring in the puck behind you if it’s deemed that you had control and I saw that and anyone who’s watched hockey would know like he did not have control going over the blue line like he lost it for a second there but I was like I don’t know man we just watched that most goal get called back. I wonder if they’re going to just pull some crap here and count this one but no they made the right call. Minnesota scored an overtime goal with no net. Yeah. Okay. How do you how how do you how does a team sign up for that? I actually don’t throw things at me, but I think they got that one right by the rule of the Do Do we want to go into it now? Cuz I have two schools of thought on this and I and I think it’s actually fascinating. I fully fully fully fully agree with the rule that if the goalie knocks the net off or whatever and the puck was going in the net anyway, it should count. And that puck obviously went what would have been right in the middle of the net basically with the net off. But Stam Coast’s point after the game of he missed the first shot. Like this was a rebound that he put in and he made a point about oh well it changed angle of the net and the puck wouldn’t have come back. I’m like he didn’t miss by that much. It probably still would have been back in his wheelhouse and Aninan stopped playing. He probably could have made an attempt to get his pad over there, but he saw the nets way the hell over there. Didn’t seem to make a play on it cuz So, on one hand, I could say, “Well, it was a rebound and the goalie thought the play was dead, so but then on the other hand, Anan and you’re the idiot who knocked the net off. It’s your fault, so screw you.” Like the the fundamental part of the rule I agree with. I felt like that one was a real gray area. And the point of he missed the first shot at least has some validity to it. I do agree. It’s it’s definitely not black and white. It’s kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don’t in terms of the rule book of like, okay, if you blow it dead, then you’re kind of incentivizing pushing it off the moorings to some degree, even if you penalize it. Right. Here’s my solution. You know how they have rebar in through the ice all the way? I wasn’t too far off. I was going to say, you know how they keep, you know, livestock in with electric fences? electrify the post and goalies aren’t allowed to touch it. Not that they although certain goalies are crazy enough where I think they would zap it just to kind of get them going the start of the third period kind of thing. Anyhow, so they got that call right. Not that it mattered in the end for the Red Wings, but yeah, that that’s Detroit’s goalending. And I think like you’re not wrong if you have some concern where you’re like you you know, you look at the numbers and you do need this to start to get better. But as we said and as Evan laid out, based on what the Red Wings have needed and their improved play this year compared to recent years, it’s not sinking them. It’s it’s fine. You wanted to regress to the mean, so you can be way better than fine, but these aren’t the god-awful Red Wings of of past seasons. They are actually playing substantially better. And I mean, we’ll talk about the PK on the other side. They are certainly helping their goalending on the PK as well by by selling out to block opportunities, too. So, it’s kind of, you know, knock on wood here, but steady eddy a little bit for the Red Wings, or more so than we’ve ever seen. So, that is Detroit’s road trip wrapped up. Thank goodness they are back home for the next four games after this. They have the New York Rangers on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. Eastern at the LCA. And then on Saturday, 1 p.m. they host the Chicago Blackhawks. We’ll be recording right after that Blackhawks game. And think of other episodes we recorded right after a Blackhawks game, immediately after. And think about it. I I didn’t, but you guys did. That’s right. Yeah. You’re going to be here Sunday, right? I’m planning on it. Okay. So, Brad and I will avoid clipping ourselves. Once again, unfamiliar with what you’re referencing. Yeah, me either. Detroit, three of five possible wins on the road trip. Just final thoughts on on how they did the road swing. How you feel? Seen some awful West Coast road swings from this team over the years. the fact that they’re walking away with three out of five wins on the road, not getting the matchups you want. I I don’t know how you could be upset with the outcome. I’m supremely excited for 700 p.m. puck drops again. Oh my god. Like the last last night it was just past midnight and I was like, I don’t think I can do it. I need to go to bed. I was like, save yourself. Don’t even like this is I can’t believe we used to do that as kids all the time. I don’t know how I I it would be unfathom like I will cheer for the Red Wings no matter what for the rest of my life and forever and ever. How did little kid Brad decide to cheer for the Red Wings when they were in the Western Conference? My god. What was it? Remember the O2 Cup run? They went through they didn’t play a road game in the Eastern time zone till the Cup finals. Like how do we do this? I don’t know how high up Gary’s office is in the in New York City in the NHL offices, but if they ever get moved back to the West, I will learn. I will train with every fiber of my strength to throw a brick as high as I can so it goes through Gary’s window. Not that I I don’t think the Red Wings would ever allow it, but yeah, I don’t know how we used to do that. Anyhow, back to reasonable start times. More on the Red Wings and what has turned around for them, including Mo Cider, although he’s just taken a big step forward. After this break, a word from our sponsors first. [Applause] [Music] Watching hockey isn’t always the easiest when the team’s on a West Coast road swing, so most of us have had a cup of coffee in our hands to help us out. Let’s make sure it’s a good one. We’ve been on Coffee Cult for a while now, and right now, their holiday blend is what’s in our mugs. It’s a dark roast with some medium dark notes made from 100% Arabica beans out of Ethiopia and Guatemala. You get this rich base of baker’s chocolate and brown sugar, then these subtle hints of apricot, blueberry, a little cherry. It’s warm, bold, and weirdly festive without being over the top. Basically, it tastes like what this time of year should. You can grab the holiday blend or any other coffee cult and get 15% off with code WWP at coffeeult.com. [Music] [Applause] Does it feel a little bit like I told you so with Moider? Because are you talking you to us or us to the rest of the hockey world? Like the Red Wings universe to the rest of the hockey world. Yeah, it really does. Like first off, there is something really won the Calder, but that was even a contentious Calder. Like that a senior citizen was being advocated for. That’s true. Yeah. Michael Bunting I think was still older than I am now when he pretty much when he was in contention for that CER that’s what it felt like but Moider first we do have to acknowledge it’s not like he’s been getting better every year and we have been saying every year it’s masked by how poor the Red Wings have been or what he’s been asked to do on the ice and there was the whole thing for like two and a half years where it’s not that just he had the hardest deployment in the league. it was he that he had record difficult deployment in the NHL in terms of where he was put out on the ice in defensive zone starts in tough situations against the other team’s best players for pretty much every minute he was on the ice but he has taken an even bigger step this season than we’ve seen and sure the point totals haven’t been there he’s he can put up the points we’ve seen the 50 point season and we know that there’s more to him and he’s not asked to do more offensively that he is defensively still like that he is responsible for keeping this team afloat. But just in terms of how much he’s controlling and dominating the game and making the right plays and if you’re not watching closely or if you’re one of those people who don’t watch other teams and you just look at the stat lines, you might not notice, but he is a force out there based on how heavy of a lift Moider is doing well and extremely well. I don’t think this is all about Mo Cider, though. He He’s better this year, but I don’t think he’s a whole heck of a lot different than last year when we were sitting here banging the drum going, “No, you don’t understand. He’s actually really, really good. Borderline elite.” And everybody was pointing at the numbers going, “No, I think this is a symptom of the overall team improvement. Most side are now playing within a proper system, a proper penalty kill, a good five on five team.” And when it feels like he doesn’t have to put out a fire every other shift he’s on the ice, it’s freeing him up to actually play his game. Yeah. Right. The Red Wings not being complete dog [ __ ] helps too, right? Like when your team is bad, the national focus isn’t going to be on the Red Wings. But when the Red Wings come out hot, they beat the Leaves back to back, they they got a lot of people talking about them, that’s when you start to get eyes on your team. And the Red Wings and Moiders specifically just kind of blend into the surroundings when they’re a mediocre fringe playoff team. But now that the Red Wings are making some noise, people are starting to realize like, oh yeah, Moider is what Red Wings fans have been telling us, we just haven’t been truly exposed to it. Dom Lucian had an article on The Athletic, and I’m going to quote a couple pieces in there. He mentioned that Lark and Raymond, Dre and Cider have all taken no new steps this season. But of those four, the biggest development, I quote, belongs to Cider, who is cementing himself as a franchise star. Despite playing a lot of tough minutes with Ben Sherro, Cider has a 56% expected goals rate to start the season and 53% of the goals. Both are well above Detroit’s team average by net rating, which you can see, I’ll link the article so you can see how Dom uses that. Only four top pair defensemen currently rank higher than Cider. Kale Mar, Zack Warenski, Adam Fox, and Josh Moresy. That is elite company for most Cider to be in. On top of that, Cider’s current projected net rating of plus 11 ranks 12th amongst all defensemen, and he’s the only one with an offensive and defensive rating north of plus five. Like, this is a Norris vote level season. This is, yeah, you have more than just people in hockey town saying that this guy is elite. It shouldn’t be a coming out party. This is nothing new for Red Wings fans. You’re not wrong, Brad. Like, he’s not playing in a completely different way. It’s just what’s always been there and is being uncovered. I do think because he’s improved as he has every year, but the rest of the team around him is just dragging him down less. Yeah, it’s one thing to play your game. It’s another thing to play it with a boat anchor behind you. And for the last like not that the Red Wings were a dumpster fire the last couple years, but at no point outside of a couple of heaters have the Red Wings looked like they’ve looked through the first 14 games this year. You know, they they’re a positive penalty kill team. They’re a positive power play team. They’re a positive five on five team. This never happened. Even in their heaters, people would pull it and go, “Yeah, this isn’t sustainable. Look at this bad stat or this, you know, power plays at 45%.” Exactly. Their shooting percentage is somehow over a hundred. Like there were warning flags and those aren’t up this year. And you know now Mo Cider can go out there and do what Moider can do. Like realistically what outside of just doing it better and more efficient has changed from Moiders’s game this year. I still feel like he doesn’t shoot the puck enough. I still feel like he doesn’t, you know, lay people out as much as we might want him to. Exactly. I I don’t think he’s changed his game fundamentally. I don’t think he’s 50% better than he was last year in terms of the way he’s playing. I like 5 to 10%. Sure, he’s still at an age where he’s going to improve incrementally, but you know, we’ve seen guys take steps from being a nobody to a superstar. That’s not what happened here. He’s always been good. just, and again, I say this with absolutely no respect to what’s happened the last 10 years because they didn’t deserve any, but nobody in the national media pays attention to the Red Wings because they’ve been awful. They’ve been the worst team in the NHL to watch for the most part of the last. So, why would anybody 20 games? That’s far too many. Sorry. But why would anybody outside of Red Wings fandom watch the Red Wings? And so the eye test wasn’t there for Mosid or for a lot of people. And then they look at the underlying analytics and because the team was awful, his analytics were bad. And they go, “Okay, maybe he’s just not that good.” Now all of a sudden the Red Wings are good, the whole team’s analytics are up, mosters analytics are up, and eyeballs are going over this way and go, “Oh, yeah. What is happening here? And to your point earlier about I told you so. This is every Redwing’s chance to go. He’s always been this dude. We’re glad you finally noticed. I think we’re going to have the same similar conversation with Simon Edmonson and maybe eventually Axel Sanding Pelica as well because like I think Simon Edson has improved year-over-year, especially after he’s been drafted. But I think at some point the roof is going to blow off and we’re going to be like this guy’s he’s more at Cider’s running mate. I actually don’t think we’re going to have that conversation. I think because Edmonson and Sandine Pelica got in on the ground floor with the Red Wings starting to get hopefully good for a sustained period of time. People are going to look at Cider and go, “Oh, he’s great.” And oh, he was always been great. We knew this. We we never said anything to the contrary. But look at what happened when the young kids came in, which there is actually some truth to that. Yeah. So, it’s gonna be like, “Oh, yeah. These rookies came in, Edmonson got a couple full seasons, and all of a sudden, the Red Wings are good, so they must be good.” And honestly, I don’t even say that facitiously. It’s true. The the cause effect goes in all directions there, right? Like Sandine Pelica and Edmonson coming in are part of what has alleviated the the difficult minutes for Cider. Not just those two, but in general like it’s a representation. Finny coming in and filling in a spot on the top line has made things better for Larkin and Raymond and players not on that line like Debrank. So like yeah the the kids benefit from this but they are also one of the catalysts of this and that cascade doesn’t just move upwards to the players who have been there for a little while like four or five years or or more in Larkin’s case. It is both directions and everyone’s chance to benefit. It’s a snowball effect. We talked about this at the end of last season through the entire off seasonason of like, okay, you’re not going in, you’re not adding massive free agents cuz those names just aren’t available and you’re not going to overspend for guys who just aren’t worth it. How do you get better? Just incrementally build the snowball effect of winning. Build the snowball effect of improving your team. It helps the guys who are already on your team. It’ll help attract more free agents with Moider there and seeing Simon Edmonson there and seeing Axel Sandine Pelica there. If by some miracle the heavens above open up and the the hockey gods will a top pair left defenseman to be on the free agent market come July 1, which god is that remembering both of our birthdays in one year is more likely than that happening. But let’s say it happens then that free agent will look at Detroit’s defensive core and say okay I’m not going to be asked to be a tugboat here. I’m not going to be asked to be the only thing holding up this entire team. like we are coming into a defensive core that’s already much improved and only getting better because the most important pieces are still really young. That snowball effect is it works in all directions. So yeah, credit to Cider, credit to, you know, the the moves in the team, the kids coming in and improving it. Credit to the Mlullen and the structure he’s instilled. We’re seeing when we talk about how the Red Wings are winning and it’s a bit more sustainable. This is what we mean. It’s it’s a lot of these different small areas that add up to to quite a bit. You you wish for a left shot defenseman that can come solve the problems. I just went to The Athletic to see their latest prospect rankings. There is a left shot defenseman currently ranked 17th from Sweden. My god. Whose name is William Hawinson. Okay. Okay. That’s a bit on the nose. That’s immediate Redwing. 6’4 and a half. That’s a Redwing. That prospect was made in a lab by Hakan Anderson and Steve Eisman. That is a Detroit 200 foot allround pro ready defenseman. Hawinson is a huge defenseman who skates quite well for his size. Oh my god. He can he competes well and can kill a lot of plays. His pure puck play won’t overly excite teams, but he has decent enough hands and can make a reliable first pass. If that’s not 200 foot forward into defenseman, I don’t know what is. If any of the other 31 NHL teams try to draft that kid, the NHL should immediately deem him not eligible to go there because that is a Detroit Redwing. I have never heard of this kid before 30 seconds ago, and I am going to be smashing the table to get this guy in the draft. We We didn’t think our first prospect profile would be in November when they have a nine and five record, but by God was that worth it. Oh man, all of a sudden I’m excited for June. We mentioned as part of the Red Wings improvements to to jump onto one other topic here, the PK the penalty kill is wildly improved for Detroit this season going from league worst near historically bad levels last year to this season going all the way up to I think it’s fifth in the league. 87.2% before we started recording. Tonight last year was 70.1% for last in the league. That is a massive turnaround and this is a big sample size now. We’ve seen a lot of games where it’s like third period you’re like, “Oh yeah, the the PK has been perfect once again.” And you can see they’re playing with more structure. They’re playing in a way that kind of covers for their faults and makes sure that they’re not letting opportunities through. They are selling out to prevent chances from reaching the net at a rate more than any other team in the league. Pashant wrote a really good article about that. This team is doing the right things on the penalty kill. We said in the preseason like if you’re going to change one thing from last year, you can flip a coin on whether you want it to be goalending or the penalty kill, but you change either one of them. And the Red Wings are a playoff team the last two seasons. And it looks like the PK has made a massive, massive jump so far. Well, it seems like the mentality on the PK and obviously the structure follows that a little bit is they are fully selling out to not give up high danger chances. They are basically daring teams to take shots from a distance. Like we’re going to let you have it. You want to shoot from the top of the key, it’s all yours. But we got three guys between that and the net and a goalie. So if you can get it through, yeah, you might have a goal. You just play percentages, right? Like give up the the low percentage, protect the high percentage chances. If the opposing team scores on one of those low percentage run, it’s like fine. Well, I’ll take that all day. And it like you think about what the goalending has needed. You know, John Gibson, we mentioned, has needed to come in and take some time to get settled. He’s put in the good performances, but you’ve also seen the moments where you’re like, man, this guy needs to get settled. I’ll tell you that would have been way harder if he was just going to get shelled on every penalty kill and being asked to do the toughest job possible. And instead, the Red Wings are protecting against that possibility and really not just helping the team, but helping Gibson long term this season. you hope continue to settle in. And the same goes for Talbot, of course, like, okay, you want Talbot to be able to play more games for you at his, you know, this last stage of his career. Great. Make the load a little bit easier for him to lift early on in the season. Don’t, you know, run the tank dry by December 10th kind of thing. The special teams and like what’s impressive too is the the rate that the power play is clicking. You can see Patrick Kane being gone is starting to have its effect on the power play. you’re they’ve lost a little bit of juice. The offense in general, I think, is missing a bit of magic right now and you hope when Patrick King comes back, it’s not just his play, but you know, he reinstills that in the guys around him. But still, it’s not like the power play is awful. It’s still a really good power play. So, the special teams so far are not just not a problem. They are part of this solution this year for the Red Wings. Yeah. And every top NHL team has at least one elite unit and the other one isn’t bad, right? Like the Red Wings power play last year was elite, elite, elite, elite, but their penalty kill fully offset it and then some. And that’s not a winning formula. So, you know, what was that stat pashant had about they’re a plus power play team, a plus five on five team, a plus penalty kill team by whatever metric it was. And every team who’s ran that has made the playoffs. Yeah. So, where they’re at now, 14 games, you know, obviously, who knows what is and isn’t sustainable, although a lot of what they’re doing does feel sustainable. And that again, key point you made is without Patrick Kane. And again, we know what Patrick Kane can and cannot do at this point in his career, but his bread and butter is the power play. So again, do I think it’s this level of sustainable? No. But does it look like two units that can be in the top half of the league for the entirety of the season? I think so. If that’s your benchmark, anything else is a cherry on top. And then you responded with pashant sent just that stat. You responded with the don’t give me hopef. that was appropriate because it’s like everything is no Red Wings fan is going to, you know, cash this and bring this to the bank so far. Like everyone is kind of waiting with baited breath. Not because you’re expecting the collapse, but you’re like it almost feels eerily good. But like Evan said, you boil it down to any one of the individual components and it’s this looks like solid hockey. Isn’t the like general rule of thumb for your special teams to equal 100%? So it’s like that would be about league average. Yeah. Yeah. Like if your penalty kills 80% and your power play is 20 or 100. So like you’ve got pretty competent special teams. I think the Red Wings are like 109 or 110%. So I think their penalty kills like top five in the league, which is hard to believe given it. If you would have told me one calendar year ago that the Red Wings would have a top five penalty kill in the league, I’d say, did they get guns? What Vzna goalie? Yeah. Did we get guns? Yeah. What Vzna caliber goalie did the Red Wings get in the offseason? But yeah, it’s it also helps that they’ve brought in like you see Axel and Pelica playing the penalty kill a cerebral player who understands like when to take chances and when to you know give it up a little bit. So it’s it’s great to see if we sometimes get comments on YouTube and they’re like is Evan just texting I’ll show I’m like no he he generally uses his phone for notes and sometimes when he has to do I can’t remember anything tough math like 20 plus 80 that’s he has a calculator app right now. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That’s the Red Wings special teams. Just a quick look at the prospect pipeline. You might have caught that we posted a an update on that front on socials. Follow us wherever. Instagram, Twitter, wherever you you want to look up the Wing Wheel podcast. But the Red Wings pipeline, I know we’ve talked about it already, but there are a lot of guys here who are doing some really special things. Eddie Genborg, you know, the the second round pick, the Bulldog that we talked about from last draft through 18 games played in the SHL, seven goals, six assists, 13 points, leads the SHL in U21 points. And it’s not perfect comparables, like there’s other situations that go into this, but his draft plus one season, like his point scoring rate is really, really good, surpassing guys like Lucas Raymonds. Again, there’s broader contracts to the whole season. We’re not saying Genber is Raymond, but you’re seeing this out of a guy who wasn’t really picked to be a high point producing forward. That wasn’t his calling card, although it is part of his game. Really strong start for him. Max Plant, you know, leading the NCAA in points, top four in goals. Brent Solomon continues to lead the USHL in points. Then you have Sebastian Kosa off to an unreal start in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins and how well they’re doing. Second in save percentage, fourth in goals against average. You have Jesse Kiskanin second in U21 points in Liga and then Demetri Pachelnikov third in U23 points in the KHL. Like the the reinforcements whether far or close like there’s it’s more than just what’s made this team and more than just what’s in the AHL even. Like everywhere things are looking extremely positive. Not only do you hope that they Well, you probably hope that these guys will translate to the NHL, make the Red Wings, they also give you assets to go and acquire a big fish at some point if that’s that’s the plan. Like, would I like all of those guys to pan out with the Red Wings and, you know, be called their hopefuls and be some of the best players on the team? Yeah. but of not all of them are going to make it and there’s obviously only so many roster spots. Yeah. So, it offers you a little bit more flexibility should a bigname player have interest in Detroit. We’ve talked about that. No one likes to think about it that way. Like people get pretty upset when you talk about, you know, think of a really good prospect. He is probably going to be fodder for when you make a move. But then think about teams like Vegas. Who was the guy we talked about with Vegas? Jack Eel. How’d they get Jack Eel? They gave up Pton Krebs among other things. But Peyton Krebs is extremely highly regarded and it’s not the only way to get top end players. But no one’s making it to free agency anymore. The cap is going up way way more. Teams are have the ability to keep players. There’s not the contract squeeze like there was in the the co flat cap era. We’re out of that. It’s gone. So unless you land someone in free agency by some miracle of of the heavens above like I mentioned, you either bring them in through your system or you trade for them if you need it sooner. And the Red Wings have all the pieces while still being a good team. So uncomfortable thought, but it could be it should a good problem to have. You have many, many outs when you have valuable assets. In this era of the NHL, if you’re not winning draft lotteryies, you need to have that problem. Yeah. That’s all you can do. All right, we’re going to take another quick break and when we’re back, the final segment on this episode of the Wing Wheel Podcast. Back after this. Let’s start with a start with one that I think Evan will like. This one’s not hockey related, but I think Evan’s going to like this one. Chunkas Duncus says, “Good start. Hot dog toppings of choice. Are you gobbling gizzies plain?” Oh, at $2 beer and hot dog night in Grand Rapids, you kind of just It’s all about There’s no time for condiments. Yeah, there’s no time. If for some reason your beer is like you don’t have a can, you have like an open cup of beer, you might dip the the hot dog in that if you really need to help it go down, but otherwise it’s just pure like cafeteria hot dog straight down the the gullet. Condiments on hot dogs is a very divisive topic. I’m not that religious about it. Yeah, you gizzy your goblin goblin your gizzy. Those both stay in the way the way you need to. I’m not going to judge you, but there’s some people are like, “If you put ketchup on a hot dog, I will stab you.” That’s the Pope’s stance. Yeah. Yeah. I like people who are like, “Yeah, just mustard.” Like I really like Sorry, Brad. I really like like mustard and onions kind of thing. I think that’s a good one. Sure. I sometimes put ketchup, too, but chili on top of a hot dog. Why not? You know what I have right now? Just because it’s I have it at home. I’ve been adding a hot horseradish that I get from the farmers market. Makes a lot of sense. Yeah. There’s two ways I go on this. If it’s just a traditional hot dog, ketchup, mustard relish, traditional goes great. If you’re getting like more like the pole, don’t call that traditional. They’re going to shoot you. Fair enough. If you get like a pole of sausage, that’s where the sauerkraut comes in for me. Yeah. You got a nice brought like if I had to personally choose, I’m just a ketchup guy. But you know what? I I’m not going to tell you how to eat your hot dog. At risk of stealing from our bonus overtime episode, you are telling me you don’t like onions. But the same you you like sauerkraut. They don’t taste even remotely similar. No, but they’re cousins. Like flavor-wise, those are cousins. Am I not I have cousins I’m related to that I can’t tolerate and I’m like best friends with. So I just feel like someone who doesn’t like onions would probably not like You’re like an onion enjoyer by proxy almost. Sure. Where on your head were you dropped? Oh, a few instances. I mean, I’m also Do you like colelaw? Yeah, that doesn’t make any sense to me. Do you like a vinegar based kleslaw or more of like a mild or sweet kleslaw? I could go for either. What are you? I’m half German, so I’m kind of legally required to like sauerkraut to be fair. You’re half something else, but that’s for the bonus overtime episode. Yeah, that’s fair. With apologies to the Pope, GH says, “Is it just me or does De Brinket look like he’s found another gear in his skating? He’s been buzzing lately. Both speed and edgework look as good as I remember since he got here. Somewhat curious if you think Kane not being in the lineup is impacting this at all. Assuming he’s usually setting the pace for that line. No, I don’t think so. I don’t again like Sadder, I don’t think De Brinka looks any dramatically different this year. He looks quicker. He’s playing with a bit more pace, but a lot of the things he’s doing this year, he did last year. I think just the team overall is playing with more pace. Well, that’s the thing. The guys playing with him now are keeping up. And I know he played a lot with Larkin and Raymond and Casper and Kane last year, but the defense on the ice affects that a lot too when he has clean trans. Actually, this is probably what it is. The Reds are having clean transitions out of their zone, which is giving him the chance to carry the puck through the neutral zone unimpeded or with pace or with speed, which he might not have had as many opportunities to do last year. Raspersonson and Petri on a 2 and0 breakaway says, “If that often discussed award for best defensive defenseman actually existed, would Cider be among the favorites to win it so far this season?” Oh, yeah. Cider Slavven would always be in it. Yeah. Yeah. Know, he’d he’d definitely be in it. Yuper and the D says, “Now that the initial wow, these kids are good vibes are wearing off regarding rookies, we’re seeing a lot of fans jumping off the wagon and more reasonably some fans saying, well, wait, hold on. They have a few flaws. What’s your take on this? Are they in a downward spiral as the wagon jumpers would have us believe or is this just what we should have expected to see? Are Pelica and Finny in trouble? Pelica has been getting better. I think this everything you’ve seen so far is expected. They’re going to continue to be flawed. Very few players are going to come into their positions and be absolutely flawless. Finny was extremely hot, cooled off. Pelica has, you know, Sandy Pel, you’ve seen the mistakes, but you’ve also seen him, you know, work on that while still having that cerebral way of thinking the game that Evan referenced earlier. Yeah, everything’s been about as expected for good young players. Yeah, Finn has been fine. I wouldn’t say he’s getting better or worse. He’s kind of been doing what he’s been doing all year. ASP, I feel like this road trip, he made a lot less mistakes than he did on the home stand before it. Steadying his game quite a bit. Yeah, he’s he’s figuring out. And even at that, some points are starting to come for him now. Obviously the Raymond goal against Jose was an incredible move by Raymond. Don’t dismiss the play Sandy Bella made to get him the puck. Like he’s getting better. He’s he’s that guy that I think is within a year or two going to have that like rocket ship to the moon type vibe around him. Yeah. And like you know with with Edmonson going up to the first pair and things moving around and and Sandy and Pelican Sherrock getting minutes like things are going to change in terms of his deployment too. And it’s not all good or not all bad. like they might seek to and probably have to a degree seek to shelter him a little bit as they found out where he’s been struggling to make sure that they can still use him effectively, but yeah, all signs are positive so far. It’s just not, you know, astronomically overwhelmingly good game in and game out. I think that’s that’s fine. He’s a 20-year-old sub6 defenseman. The fact that Mlullen is still giving him huge minutes in the top four should tell you all you need to know about where ASP’s game is at right now. What exactly is a distinct kicking motion? Says, “I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve been noticing a big skill discrepancy between the top guys in Finny, especially on power play one and six on five. No hate, but I think he should be replaced with a Casper or JVR or maybe a soda blob in those situations. They should spend some time with guys like JVR or Kane and learn a few things before he gets another shot. What do you think?” I think that yeah, the gap between the other forwards in the top six and Finny is there. He’s again, we’ve beat it to death, but two years removed from being a seventh round pick. I would argue there is not a better option on the roster right now to play in that spot than him. I don’t think JVR has the legs to keep up with those guys and I don’t think there’s anybody else that has the skill to keep up with those guys and I’m not breaking up the second line. So, I’m not putting Casper up there. So, almost by default, it’s still him. You need Kane back is is what you need. like that’s there’s a skill gap and you need Kane back especially in those power play situations then everything will kind of slot in a little bit better. Trent L says here’s a fun hypothetical just reading ahead this isn’t fun at all but for the sake of it which Atlantic Division opponent would be the least painful team to be swept by in a playoff round from a fans perspective and which team would hurt the most? One that would hurt the least Buffalo. Yeah, because you’d have that little bit of feeling good for Sabres fans if they if they got that Florida because they’re the cup champs back to back and you’re like, “Yeah, okay.” That’d probably be a proper beatd down. Yeah. I think what would hurt the most, you almost want to say Montreal, but it’s Toronto until the day I die. Yeah. Yeah. Even I agree with that. If we take the default Toronto out of it because it’s always going to be the answer. I think the second choice is also pretty clear, it’s Ottawa. Yeah, it’s a wolf. I would not be Montreal fans eat their hot dogs like a cobb of corn. Over an hour in before we get Evan versus French. Oh man. All right. Awe says, “I’m not sure if it’s just me, but Barren has been more noticeable in a good way recently. I hope he can find a way to stay with this team. I love his energy. Something the team needs more of on the roster. If he can just be consistent defensively, I think he’s fine. He’s got more creativity in the ozone than any other forward in the bottom six. He can be used effectively on the second power play. He’s one of the he we talked about this in a different context, but he’s one of the goofballs that a NHL locker room needs. Like you can you can see he’s the idiot who keeps the like mood up, the spirits high, gets everybody laughing constantly. He’s just got to be consistent and not making some dumb mistakes and that has been getting better. Yeah, I agree. But he’s still not to NHL average on that front yet. You can tell that what they’re working on with him is his play off the puck. I’m less concerned about any kind of, you know, someone saying, well, he’s not outscoring those deficiencies, which I have said in the past, but then I look at it, I’m like, I I’ll wait until Nate Danielson’s playing center for him rather than, you know, confer cop or something or Rasmusen. Like it it’s you can only say that so much when you have Michael Rasmmanson at center, which just does not work. But yeah, you can tell they’re working on his play off the puck and you can see him doing those things intentionally. And you get the the gaff from time to time, but I mean, so do you get that from virtually every other player in the bottom six? Like Mason Appleton, who often is asked to play in the top six, is probably the most removed from any kind of qualms you have about Detroit’s depth. And everyone else to some degree this season has at points sucked to varying degrees. And that that’s a wide spectrum. Certain guys more than others. But with Barren, I think you’re right, Brad. Like there’s the most there if he can get to that point. And so far, I do think he’s taken the right step since a rougher start. I want to see Nate Danielson come up and hopefully he gets to play with him. And then you see what maybe you get to reignite a connection there at the NHL level. Hopefully Showtime plays the next game
Wings really look like a team of the future with all of the positive strides made by the prospects this year. NHL is a speed game for younger players these days. Go wings!
Our current hesitance to crow about our current situation is borne from the PTSD we have from the last decade.
Good coleslaw should have black pepper and horseradish. It needs to have bite. The sweet or bland stuff is for chumps.
Think Cossa is the backup next season, we re-sign Talbot for a year, or we find a different free agent or trade piece in the backup role next season? Depending on where Cossa is in his development, I wouldn't mind a one year Talbot deal. He has an occasional bad game, but he's usually pretty stellar.
Ha! I live in the St. Louis area. I'd LOVE for the Wings to be in the West. Nothing better than watching my Wings beat the asses of the Blues. 😅
Having a West Coast trip over the weekend of the time change was an absolute killer.
Mustard, onion, and sweet relish is the ultimate hotdog combo
