Rich Eisen: Jets’ History Inspires Little Confidence Team Will Get Its Latest Rebuild Right

He’s just like me. And honestly after hearing Mougey’s comments about yesterday, idk how any player can feel comfortable playing for the jets knowing the gm will just trade you if the price is right regardless of your performance or what you mean to the team
I agree with him. They have to prove it and I wont celebrate till i see Jets in the playoffs. But I can say what they did was bold and probably the correct pivot after this season.
Its not even jets history for me exactly. Im struggling to remember the last full on fire sale that worked.
Texans trading Watson maybe but there was so much other noise there including the fully guaranteed contract.
And stroud is 22-18 as a starter so not exactly like it turned everything around.
Dolphins i remember did one a while back. And just look around lol.
When was the last one that seriously made a team a contender?
When even Rich is pessimistic that’s when you know this team has beaten down even its most avid supporters. He was really excited about the 2022 and Rodgers prospects but I can’t blame him for questioning if this will be any different. A 1-7 start doesn’t inspire confidence that this staff is it but these trades had to happen
While I have a little faith, I think it would be odd to not allow a new regime to pick their players and build their vision of a football team.
Again, I’m cautious because the Jets are the Jets, but you can’t blame new management for wanting to do things their way. Even more so when you take into account that fact they had nothing to do with the past incompetence of the organization.
And while I think Sauce was more important than Jamal Adams, that trade aged like fine wine. Guess we’ll see in a couple years.
It just all comes back to getting a decent QB. You get a decent QB and everything can fall in line so you are at least a decent team. The Jets would of been a good team with a decent QB though they traded away their best 2 players on Defense.
Sure, but else is there but hope right now? It’s a new regime – we need to give them a shot I suppose.
The last rebuild was decent: Wilson, Sauce, Hall, Q etc.
The main issue is the QB. The entire thing is predicated on QB development. So that’s what this regime will be judged on.
This is still fallout from going all-in on Rodgers two years ago. We’re playing for 2027 at this point, when he’s finally off the cap. I can’t blame Mougey. This was the risk we took two years ago. It didn’t work, and now we’re paying the price.
Well we at least have to try
Yeah this is why I can’t get too hyped about tearing things down for a rebuild. I just do not trust this organization to do it correctly
What’s the other option? A change was/is needed. As is these were some bright spots on a pretty damn bad team
The best take I have seen on these trades has come from Connor Rogers and the Badlands, who I think are more level headed than most commentators as they don’t keep falling back on the SOJ stuff (Connor even had a good line where he said that if you are already assuming the Jets will fuck this up, then stop being a jets fan because clearly you will never have joy from this team so why bother). The Jets had a top five defense under Saleh; they still missed the playoffs because they whiffed on the QB decision. If the Jets want to finally get the QB decision right, they need to get all the ammo possible to build a team around the QB. The Jets need a true WR2, maybe another starting guard, maybe another TE if you want to run 12 personnel a lot. These trades give you that ammo. Maybe you still fuck up the QB pick but at least it’s not because of a Darnold situation where he is throwing to UFL guys. Sauce is a very good CB, but he doesn’t get interceptions and hasn’t become a true game changer that elite CBs are. Quinnen is a great DT but he is aging, doesn’t match the Jets window, and wanted out. The Jets’ process with these trades has been good and logical, which is all you can ask for right now. Can Mougey and Glenn identify the right QB and develop him? I don’t know, but I like the process so far and I’m gonna give them the chance to do that. I’m not gonna automatically assume that the past will repeat itself because at that point why bother with the team at all
I dont really think the past is ever an indicator of the future. Mougey is not JD(clearly lol).
The QB they draft in April is gonna play behind a line thats giving Justin Fields like 4s to throw right now, will have GW+likely another 1st round receiver,Mason Taylor + maybe even Breece Hall…thats just not comparable to anything in the past.
I also dont get why people act like its a “firesale”…they traded 2 players both way above market value and neither made a difference in the last 2+ years if we are being honest.
If they nail QB it will go well if they dont its going to be a repeat of the 2021/2022 situation because nothing else matters tbh.
No shit
I’m chill as long as they eject Fields after the season. He has nothing to teach a rookie qb about the position and he isn’t good enough to win enough games for the 6-7 he would start before they make the switch.
The previous regime’s failures are not the current regime’s problem
We all understand you need to hit on these picks. But to say “Jets history shows they will screw it up” is such a dumb take. Mougey is a new GM and has nothing to do with Jets history. Can anyone tell me how Douglas taking Zach Wilson translates to Mougey screwing up the 2026 or 2027 draft? you can’t, because it’s asinine.
I’m sorry, but Rich Eisen is just annoying. He just tries to cash in on the “woah is me, I’m a miserable Jets fan” internet clicks.
Completely agree – there’s no reason to believe they’ll get it right this time around. But this is the type of rebuild that needs to precede any sustained success. Let’s see if this new regime can figure it out. Go Jets!
yeah he’s right we shouldn’t even try. Just give up and fold the franchise /s
I have zero confidence in. Let’s just keep kicking the can down the road.
The Jets could have traded for only picks, then we’d all have nothing to watch for this year and wait 1-2 years to even see a lick of change. I like that we took some risks on young players with potential who just didn’t crack it on other teams (basically being a young players second chance), if AD mitchel and Metchi and the DT we got from dallas play better here than where they came from, it will give us some gauge of if glenn actually knows what he’s doing. Im glad they gave us SOMETHING to watch for. Im totally expecting it to go to how it always does, but we won’t go winless, our seasons been over for weeks, I’m here to watch the new talent play and be thankful it’s finally colder out because im a winter person.
Here’s the truth: They’re better positioned now than at any time since they had Mangold and Da Brick.
Membou is working out. Fashanu has every chance to work out. And Tippmann is solid.
They need to get out of the AVT investment and find somebody who can contribute consistently to that unit.
And they need to find a QB. But there’s no reason they can’t do those things.
They can draft another monster DT. They can find more CBs.
They have a head coach who knows more about CBs than anybody on the planet.
Let him teach kids and get the most out of players who aren’t making huge contracts.
Edit to add: There was nothing wrong with the Becton and AVT picks. They didn’t work out. Sometimes good picks get hurt or don’t put it together on your timetable. That doesn’t make them bad picks.
In other news, water is wet
Hard to disagree with Rich here, I have zero confidence that any of these picks from the trades will amount to anything franchise changing. I hope I’m wrong.
He forgot Dee Milner
100% correct. It is the right move, now it’s about making the following right moves, and there is absolutely zero reason to believe the Jets will do that until proven otherwise.
I mean shit, we all thought the 2022 draft was a game changer, and that blew up in our faces lol. Having the picks, and then actually capitalizing are two different things.
Rich is Jets nation’s collective voice. A national treasure and a HOF Jets fan lol
What else are they supposed to do, keep sauce and Williams potentially go 4-5 and then be in no man’s land when it comes to qb? Or do what they did and now you have a lot of options, and some hope. The fact that they are pivoting in itself is a good move. Sure it leaves the fan in a weird spot, but it’s a lot less stressful knowing your team is in full rebuild mode vs trying to compete with a lackluster roster. It also shows that woody is gonna give them grace, allow them to build a culture. Also tells the players they are here to stay. This “well they screw up everything logic” dosent work here since there are no actual negatives to this move from a team building perspective.
He’s spot on
Little? Or no confidence?
My issue isn’t with Jets’ history. My issue is that Aaron Glenn has done nothing to inspire confidence that he’s the guy to right the ship. This has been such a poorly coached team that has not played complementary football.
Doug Mougey has made some good moves but Aaron Glenn has more power in the org. He cannot be allowed to make these picks if he couldn’t coach the pro bowl and all pro talent we had.
You need to lose as much as you can until you get a decent QB. We’re third in the draft order now, not good enough.
Damn why don’t you people just go the fuck away. This regime has never had 1st round picks we have no idea how they will go. But I’m not going to put the past on them.
I mean….yeah. I work in education and something we say often is: the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. By that metric we are fucked.
Did Rich Eisen just say we dismantled a “top 5 defense”? This isn’t 2023, our defense had two good games but has otherwise been three stage diarrhea this season.
The problem I have with this take is it uses “They” like the Jets have been run by the same GM for the last 20 years. I understand the Woody of it all, but Woody didn’t make Mike Maccagnan the worst drafting GM in the history of the sport. Woody didn’t make Joe Douglas draft Zach Wilson, despite your favorite conspiracy theory. Using the royal They to refer to the Jets just tells me you believe in curses and ghosts and ghouls in which case I have no interest in engaging in that dialogue.
Mougey and his staff are the only ones who matter in regards to making these picks work. Now you can say that *they* don’t inspire confidence which is fine and I don’t have a retort against that other than you or I or Rich have no control over that so just watch it or don’t and see what happens.
I might have finally just gotten to a place where I don’t care what happens within this organization until Woody is gone. We all know that’s the only change that we haven’t already seen before.
I understand but the current GM and HC have nothing to do with past failures.
Duh, but what’s the better alternative?
Of course. Doesn’t mean they should stop trying though.
Bill Parcells was the only thing that resurrected this steaming heap. I have little hope as a Jets fan does.
Rich Eisen continues to be a bias reporter with no real credibility
