The oneness of Oaktown, disturbed. #oakland #athletics #hiero #baseballhistory #aba #oaklandoaks
Hey, Coop here. Welcome to 90 Second ReCAP, where I share a quick sports
history lesson based on today’s cap. It’s October 13th, and I’m wearing
a Hieroglyphics New Era 59Fifty, and an Oakland Lakefest t-shirt,
both purchased from Oaklandish. If you’re not familiar with Hiero, they’re
a hip hop band out of Oakland who’ve been around since 1991, while Lakefest
kicked off in 2018 at Lake Merritt, to celebrate community, culture, and Juneteenth. The Crew’s logo is the Mayan numeral eight,
which represents eternal love made manifest. Mayan mysticism also believes
that this is an infinity symbol that connects and harmonizes differences
into oneness–which to me is sadly ironic, given the DEBACLE that’s gone
on in Oakland with the A’s. If the A’s did one thing in Oaktown–and trust
me, they did MANY things, not just one–they did exactly that, catalyzing people from all walks of
life, of all colors and creeds, uniting them in an attempt to save their beloved ballclub–which
hasn’t happened yet, but don’t give up hope. And, having seen the pricing that was just
announced for the 2025 season in the Capital City, the Sacramento A’s might draw the
fewest fans in the league in decades. I doubt that they’ll show as badly
as the 1935 St. Louis Browns, who drew less than 81,000 for the entire
SEASON, but it’s nice to have goals. We’re on this topic because on THIS DATE in 1967,
the Oakland Oaks defeated the Anaheim Amigos 134-129 at the Arena, in the ABA’s very first game
EVER, in front of a crowd of less than 5000 fans. Unfortunately, that was just
about the high water mark, with the team leaving for D.C. after
two years due to low attendance.
Hiero, a Hip Hop group from Oakland, chose for their logo the Mayan number eight, representing eternal love made manifest.
Unfortunately, Oaktown’s fans haven’t been treated with much love by their ownership groups, as we discuss in today’s episode…
