NY Giants Rumors: Top Free Agent Targets After NFL Trade Deadline

Yo, what’s going on everybody? You’re watching Giants Now by Chat Sports. I am your host, Marshall Green. Appreciate everybody for stopping by as we go over the top three agents. Joe Shane signed for the rest of the season following the NFL trade line where the Giants made zero moves. I think it is a chance the Giants go out and sign a player that could help this team. You have a GM on the hot seat. You have a head coach on the hot seat. You need to win games. You need to get some better players in the building. Let’s start with the top three agent out there right now. That is Christian Wilkins, the interior defensive lineman who last played for the Las Vegas Raiders. He made his name and his hay with the Miami Dolphins. And there’s a couple of reasons he’s not on a team right now. It it’s really still unclear if he is healthy. He had an injury that he needed surgery for, then he didn’t get the surgery, and we don’t even know what’s going on at this point. We all know that there was some weird locker room accusations that went on with Las Vegas leading to his release, and there have been zero reports of any kind of visits. So there is that. There’s also though that he’s a good football player and the New York Giants on the D line, it’s pretty damn or excuse me at the dtackle position. I’ll say that it is pretty bare in the cupboard. Wilkins is a player that is really good friends with Dexter Lawrence and they were college teammates and he could potentially help this run defense as you are at the bottom of the league in that department. Am I worried about the locker room stuff? Yeah. Do I worry about all his accusations? Yeah. So, I wonder and I’m curious about all those things. I also know that he could help the Giants at a very thin position group and one that’s not being very productive right now. Do you think the New York Giants should go out and sign Christian Wilkins? Let me know your thoughts. I think it could be for a one-year veteran minimum deal at this point. Type Y for yes, type N for no. The second best free agent out there is veteran safety Justin Simmons. While I don’t think the Giants have the biggest need at the safety spot, they are dealing with an injury to Javon Holland. Sounds like he might play this week, but man, I know they’re not going to do it. Tyler Nuben should not be playing every single snap anymore. And Justin Simmons is a much better player than Tyler Nuben. And I get it. Joe Shane wants to develop Nuben. Newman was a guy that played more snaps than any rookie last year at safety and you want to develop that guy, but you also need to win some games and uh Justin Simmons, he uh he would help you do that. The third best free agent left in this class is Asante Samuel Jr. That’s the name that a lot of people have their eyes on right now. A player that did not get signed this off season due to him battling some injuries. And ESPN is starting to report he’s been in touch with a couple of different teams. There’s some visited scheduled visits that are going on and he’s finally cleared for football activities after a spinal fusion surgery in April. So that’s always a little bit worrisome. But with the way the New York Giants are stacked up at that corner spot, I would be interested in bringing in Samuel. He is a guy that could be sticky in coverage. He could be physical as well. a little bit on the smaller side. Not the longest arms at the corner spot, but he’s better than Corey Black. He’s better than a couple of players the New York Giants are employing right now at that corner spot. As of the time of recording this video, the Giants reportedly do not have a visit lined up with Asante Samuel. We’re hearing the Packers, Vikings, Panthers, and I believe the Chicago Bears are set to have a visit with him. Do you want the Giants to sign Asante Samuel? If you do, hit that thumbs up icon. I think it’d be a good idea. I think the question becomes, would he want to sign with the Giants at this point? Maybe you want to look to the veteran corner route. Stefon Gilmore. I think this comes back to would Gilmore want to join a 2-7 Giants and essentially come out of retirement. At this point, I was begging before the 2023 season for the New York Giants to go out and sign Stefon Gilmore. And then I wanted him to be a Giant again before last year. It did not happen. I think he’s someone that would walk in and be the best corner on this Giants team outside of Paul Nudibbo. Um I think it might not happen though. Eric Kendricks, the inside linebacker, is a name that I would look at if I’m the New York Giants. I know he’s a veteran. I know he doesn’t give you much in pass coverage, but this is a guy that’s a tackle machine. And the New York Giants are not getting adequate play out of the linebacker spot. Bobby O’ Carrick has been all right. Darius Musowl has just kind of proven he’s not an NFL player at this point. Demetrius Flanigan fouls and the other linebackers the Giants have. They are just not better football players than Eric Kendricks. I know he’s a little bit older, but put up 138 tackles last year. I understand tackles aren’t everything, but the Giants, they need help at the inside linebacker spot. Jawan Bentley is another name at linebacker to potentially look at if you are the Giants trying to improve that room. He’s a guy prior to 2024, he stacked up three 100 tackle seasons in a row with five tackles for loss in each of those 100 plus tackle seasons. Again, you’re thin at linebacker. It could make some sense. Josie Juel is another guy that you could potentially look at at that spot. If you haven’t noticed, I’m trying to find free agents that the Giants are a little bit thin at. Josie has had some injuries over the past couple of years, some concussion issues, but when he’s on the field, he contributes. And I think he’d walk in and be your second best linebacker behind Bobby O’ Carrick. I think he’d say the same thing about Bentley and the same thing about Kendrick’s as well. So, the Giants, they’re thin and inside linebacker and I think they should maybe go make a move. Do they? I don’t know at this point. Played last year for the Miami Dolphins. prior to that spent the last uh spent the three prior seasons with the Washington Commanders. I think a veteran being being brought into this room could make some sense. Like I don’t know how long Deontay Banks is going to be out or excuse me Cordell Flat is going to be out. Art Green is going to be out. Doesn’t sound like Paulson is playing this week. So maybe you look to bring in a veteran. The ninth best free agent according to the chat sports rankings that are available is Shaquille Barrett. the football linebacker. This is a player that’s had a pretty damn good career in the NFL. He would bring you someone that could potentially give you some juice off the edge. Um, I don’t think the Giants are necessarily looking to add any edge rushers at this point. It’s a guy that has had 19 and a half sacks in a season before. Does he want to play football? I don’t know. Uh, I’m not sure it’s a great fit at this point either. DJ Ch is a name that I think the Giants could maybe look to take a call on. This is a wide receiver that the Giants actually had interest in a couple offseasons ago. You’re pretty thin there. This a guy could take the top off the defense. Gives you another guy that could stretch the field. Some explosion there. I don’t hate it. What about bringing back James Bradberry? To be honest, I have no interest in that. Bradberry is not the player he once was with the New York Giants and with the Carolina Panthers. There’s a reason that the Philadelphia Eagles did not bring him back for the 2025 season. Um the best thing he ever did for uh the Giants was actually getting that holding call in the Super Bowl for the Eagles that caused them not to win it. So James, you’re good in my book, my man. But not really interested. What about a running back? Look, the Giants are thin there. We know Scataboo is out for the year. They’re only rostering two running backs right now. And Gus Edwards is a guy that is out there. He’s talented and he can run in between the tackles. He’s a veteran in this league. He’s produced before. Spent some time with the Chargers last year. Played a lot with the Ravens over the last handful of seasons. I don’t know if you can just roll with Tyrone Tracy and Devin Singleary. I don’t know if you could do that. We’ll find out if they do. Maybe a reunion with Isaiah Simmons could be in the cards. Now, I don’t think that one is going to happen. um it didn’t sound like it went too well last year with him. He was promised to play a certain role and then he didn’t play that role and he essentially left in free agency. Um look, Simmons was a player coming out of college that I fell in love with. Never really found a role, never really found a home and never really found a position on on a team either. I think he’s a C player at everything. And when you’re not great at anything in this league, it could be tough. Another running back that you could potentially see the Giants look at is Jamal Williams. An extremely tough runner. He had that one year where he had almost like 20 touchdowns. Um I don’t hate it. I don’t hate it. You’re thin there. Von Bell, the safety, played with the Cincinnati Bengals, a good player in his day. A little bit older at this point. Giants do have that injury to Javon Holland. Who knows if he’s going to come back this week. I heard he might, but um again, I don’t have a lot of faith in Tyler Nuben. Deontay Johnson is a wide receiver. The New York Giants actually worked out. And I think when you work out a player and you don’t sign them, it kind of tells you how the workout went. Look, and like outside of that, Deontay Johnson has been on like five teams since 2023. He was with the Steelers. He spent time with the Ravens. He spent time with the Texans. He didn’t spend time with the Browns. Um he’s just kind of been popping around and um from what I have heard is he can sometimes be a little bit of a problem in the locker room. Od Beckham Jr. is still out there. He is suspended at this point due to peeds. Um he can return in week 12 from what I’ve been told. I don’t know how that’s possible considering he’s not on a team and that’s how you’re serving your suspension. He talked on the podcast uh the pivot with Ryan Clark that he wants to be a Giant again one day and he wants to do it for their fans. My question is what is left in the tank of Odo Beckham Jr. always going to be one of my favorite players to play for the Giants. He was a shining star on this team that was extremely dull and boring and lost a lot of games. His first three years of his NFL career was better than anybody else in this league. He was good with the Ravens in 2023. He was not very good with the Dolphins in 2024. Look, I like Odell Beckham. I would welcome him back. Would you? Will Odell Beckham play in the NFL again? That’s my question. Type OBJ for yes. Type no BJ for no. All right, moving on here. Another receiver, Nelson Agawar, a veteran as well. Look, we don’t have to stand up here and talk about how thin the New York Giants are at that spot. We know it. I’d like to see them make a move to try to add some talent here to help their young quarterback in Jackson Dart. We’ll see what they do. This next name is interesting to me. Cam Smith, the corner, former second round pick. Guy released by the Miami Dolphins, I believe, prior to the season. I heard he was a player the New York Giants had interest in interest in back in that draft process. Um, I don’t mind taking a flyer on him. Bring him to the practice squad. See what he’s got. Second round pick, unless there’s some things we don’t know about going on in the locker room there. Lewis Seen, former first round pick, the safety from the Minnesota Vikings. He had that nasty leg injury that I’m sure a couple of people remember. Hasn’t been able to bounce back from that former first round pick. I don’t hate bringing him in to the practice squad uh and seeing if there’s anything left. A couple of other names you could look at. Zack Moss, Emanuel Mosley, Cameron Sutton. Look, if you’re a free agent in November, it means a couple of things. One, you’re not interested in playing. Two, teams aren’t interested in signing you or you’re waiting for the right opportunity to go play for a contender. And um that unfortunately is not the New York Giants. Name a free agent you want Big Blue to sign. Will they make a move following the deadline? I don’t know, but wanted to give you guys a handful of names. 23 of them on today’s show that are out there and um maybe they bring them in, maybe they don’t.
