Tennessee Titans fan is MAD watching Shannon Sharpe and Ocho say Titans were WRONG to fire Callahan

All right, folks. Tennessee Titans fans Shannon Sharp and Oo Sinko are here to talk about the firing of Brian Callahan. The title of the video is that they are heated at Titans owners for firing Brian Callahan and not being patient. Oh, I can already tell this is going to be a doozy. Oh, I got thoughts on your favorite sports. night. Oh, Joe. The Titans have fired by Brih Brian Callahan just six games into his second season as head coach. His team was 4 and9. The Titans were three and 14 in Callahan’s first season, finishing with the number one pick and selecting Cam Ward with Callahan firing the past four quarterbacks drafted number one overall. Six of the past eight see uh seen their head coaches fired during their rookie season. Trevor Lawrence, Urban Meyer, Bryce Young, Frank Wright, Caleb Williams, Matt Eberloose, Cam Ward, Brian Callahan. I do wonder if you’re going to start seeing teams that maybe have the number one overall pick that want to draft uh a new franchise quarterback in the draft. I wonder if you’re going to start seeing teams just firing their head coach if they have any doubts about him whatsoever because it’s such a trend now. Trevor Lawrence, I mean, I I’m not going to name it all cuz he just did, but because it’s happening so much where these quarterbacks are being drafted to teams where they lose their head coach in the middle of their rookie season. If you are a team up top and you’re going to be drafting a quarterback with the first pick, second pick, third pick, and you don’t fully believe in your head coach 100%, even if he’s only been there a year, do you just go ahead and cut ties with him and move on? I wonder if that’s going to start to become a trend. Oh, Joe. Yeah. What do you think? It’s not It’s not the coaches. It’s It’s not the coaches. It’s It’s the owners. Hey, Chad, stay with me real quick and and understand this. The owners have to understand that when it comes to football, right, the owners are businessmen, huh? And the stuff that they do, the the the stuff that they’re passionate and enthusiastic about outside of football, in the business world, the one way to fix it is you throw money at it. You throw money at it and that return on investment, it happens right away. When it comes to the game of football, this ain’t this ain’t a microwavable play. You don’t you don’t draft a quarterback, have a new coach, and put him out there on the field and think you all are going to have success right away. That’s not the way it works. That’s never been the way. I get what he’s saying. And and in many cases, I think he would be correct. And and I understand that most people are not caught up on watching their Tennessee Titans football, okay? Cuz why would they be? Like, it’s miserable to watch. I get what he’s saying, but here’s the problem. For anybody that has been watching the Tennessee Titans, this coach, God bless him, I think he was just overwhelmed. This was an emergency. Th this this was an emergency. Am I saying this roster is good? They should be. No, I understand the roster’s not good, but like look at the regression happening with Cam Ward just from weeks one to six. The confidence he appears to have lost, the swagger he appears to have lost. Like, watch some film breakdowns of this offense, this offensive scheme, which many times is offensive. the route combinations, guys not knowing what they’re doing, lining up off sides, illegal shifts. This was an emergency. And I understand where he’s coming from that so often these owners who just see the business side of things aren’t realizing that sometimes it takes time. But there are some instances where, you know, we we could sit here and tell story after story of moments of Callahan’s time with the Titans that were just unacceptable and weren’t getting better and were never going to get better. Way it works. Now, sometimes you get a quarterback like a you get a CJ Shrout, you get lucky. You get a Jaden Daniels and you get lucky. You get a franchise altering quarterback right away. that changes the trajectory and speeds up the process of being a consistent team that can win. But listen, I listen, Brian Callahan getting fired, obviously first year with Cam Ward, it it’s it’s not the microwave. This ain’t food. You can’t just put in there and heat it up and all of a sudden thing you’re going to have success. It just doesn’t happen like that. It never has. Again, I get what he’s saying, but I and I understand if you haven’t been watching the Titans, if you haven’t stayed up to date on what it has looked like, yes, it’s easy to look and say, I mean, my goodness, he’s he hadn’t even gotten a season and a half. Like, he got a rookie quarterback. What are you doing? I get that. Like, on paper, I get that thought process. But when you dig into the weeds and you see what’s been happening here, I know it’s not ideal to fire the head coach in the middle of your quarterback’s rookie season. I hate that. It wasn’t ideal for Trevor, wasn’t ideal for Bryce, wasn’t ideal for Caleb, and it’s not ideal for Cam. I totally understand that, but I think it would have done more damage to keep him. I think it was that bad. like and and I know if you haven’t watched and you haven’t really paid attention to the Titans, maybe you don’t get that, but I’m telling you it was that bad. It was that bad. The offense, the scheme, it was that bad. They don’t have patience. Oo, they’re not letting anything develop. You know, I have I used to have a saying I get my chickens by smashing the eggs, not by letting them hatch. There’s a process in which an egg hatch into a chicklet. These what these owners are doing. They’re smashing eggs. They’re not they’re not going to let it hatch. They fired the general manager. They fired Brabel. They fired Ryan Carthan. And guess what? Now they fired Brian Callahan. Now that’s the key right there. While I understand I think they had to fire Callahan because it was that bad. I also understand that the Titans organization has not exactly earned themselves the benefit of the doubt. I know that too. Like it’s not just about Callahan. It’s about the track record they have developed. of hiring and firing very soon. And so even though I think the firing of Callahan was absolutely justified, I do understand that this organization has not gained the benefit of the doubt because they’re just firing people all the time. And and you have to either admit it’s because they’re not being patient in some cases or it’s because they’re repeatedly hiring the wrong people over and over and over again. And if they’re repeatedly hiring the wrong people, then it feels like somebody higher up on the totem pole should have to answer for that. And what what are they doing? They don’t know. Do they do my my point exactly? So obviously they’re not football people. They’re not they’re businessmen. They need she is Amy Adams. Okay. I think I think the last is pronounced skunk. Skunk. He did not. He didn’t. He did not. Shannon, you did not just say skunk. Did that didn’t just happen. He did not just call her Amy Adams skunk. Completely serious. Wasn’t even joking. Wasn’t even trying to be funny. Dead serious. He thinks that’s her name. Right. Drunk. her father. How do they not even laugh at the fact that he just said skunk? And they’re just like, “Oh yeah, strunk.” Like, how do you not at least laugh at the fact that you just called her Amy Adams skunk? Mr. Bud Adams. Bud Adams. Yeah. Okay. I know who that is. I know who that is. He He passed away and turned it over to her. I don’t know how involved she was at the time. Right. So, you inherit this business and if you haven’t invested or spent a whole lot of time in it, you don’t know a whole lot about it. You’re trusting other people to run the business. Mhm. Now, at least when Jerry passes away, hopefully that’s not for another hundred years. His kids have been in the business from day one. So, they’re going to understand how this business works. Yeah. So they they have been a part of it since he purchased the team in 1989. I know what he’s getting at. Um I think what Amy has tried to do is she has tried to appoint people who know more about it than her. That’s where Brinker comes in. And now Boronzi and Bori is a football guy by the way. Boronzi is not just a business guy. He’s a football guy. And that’s why I hope they will let Mike Moronzi have a lot of say in this head coaching search. As a matter of fact, I wish they just let him head it up by himself. No Brinker, no Skunk, no Burke Nill, just Boranzi. Let him do it by himself cuz he’s a football guy. He’s well respected in the NFL. I hope they let him do that. But I get what they’re saying. I think Amy has tried to appoint people to make these decisions that she’s not informed enough to make. But the narrative is that she is the one who keeps firing people. She is the one who keeps making these ultimate decisions about firing Vel. I don’t think many people in the organization wanted to fire Vrabel. I think she did that of her own valition. Carthon, the hiring of Karthon, who was responsible for that? I mean, I feel like Amy played a big part in that because Vel didn’t want Carthon. I think Vel liked Karthon. I just think he didn’t believe he was ready for the job. But Amy, you know, and and whoever else insisted. So, I mean, she is playing a part in these decisions. She needs to absolutely step step back and say, you know what? I’m not making any more decisions. I am totally putting this on you guys and I’m not going to make a single decision. Brinker, Boronzi, you guys are running this thing. I’m going to my office and I’m never coming out until we win a Super Bowl or something. You know, they’ve been a part of it. I don’t know how involved she was with it. So, and you’re trusting other people. I don’t know how involved they were with it. So, it’s it’s it’s it’s it’s it’s tough. Oo. It’s tough. What what they need to realize is how bad Brian Callahan was. Brian Callahan was going to be fired at some point. Whether it was now, whether it was next week, whether it was the by-week, end of the season, like he wasn’t going to be the head coach next year because he’s been that bad. So again, I’m not going to blame whoever it was, Amy Brinker, whoever made the call. I think they all knew it was going to happen eventually. And I I’m not going to blame them if they deemed that this product was unwatchable and the team wasn’t getting any better at all. There was no progress being made. Like I’m not going to blame them for pulling the plug. And it’s not like a another business because if your business is not doing well, you just don’t you just don’t sell it. You just don’t scrap your Hey, start buying the CEO, start finding the VP, the COO. You don’t start firing a whole bunch of people. You give it time. Yeah, you have to. You don’t have a choice. You have But but those that are in positions of power, I don’t think they understand how the game of football works. You’re drafting number one for a reason. Yeah. You’re terrible. You’re drafting number one for a reason. That quarterback is going to have his ups and his downs. Yes. I mean, that that’s just that’s the nature of the business. Oh, but they say what? But these young quarterbacks go into dysfunctional franchises. If they was functional, he wouldn’t be there. What the hell? That’s true. There’s a reason why you got an opportunity to pick first, right? You’re bad. How would that be fair that Kansas City win the championship and then they get the first pick in the draft? The Eagles win the champ win the Super Bowl, they get the first pick in the draft. We talked about this the other day is that the Lakers won the championship in 82 and guess what they got? They got to select James Worthy number one overall. Okay. How is that fair? Right. Damn. Yes. No. So, normally the best So, normally the collegiate best player or what is deemed the best player goes to the worst situation because we want that guy to catch up. If we just put the the worst the best players on the best teams. I mean, I get why they stay bad. I just I I they just they’re not going to give it time. Oo. They’re just not going to give it time because you’re going to have to pay these quarterbacks. These quarterbacks are going to be getting $3 million. Three, excuse me. 300 million. Yeah. Absolutely. And so there’s like But this is the problem, dude. This is the problem that scares me. If you only gave Callahan two years, right? You you got you drafted Cam Ward. I’m not sure how much time he I’m not sure how much how many years are on his rookie deal. Do you have the patience with him? They got they got they got four plus to fifth year option. Do you have the patience with him? Uh I think if you’ve read the article from CBS Sports, Amy is very aware of what the media and what people online are saying about the state of the organization. I think it has reached a point where it’s so absurd. It is so topsyturvy. It’s so ridiculous. I think whoever’s the next hire is going to be here a while because they’re going to have to be. I think she’s well aware of what’s being said and she’s going to have to stick with Boronzi. She is going to have to stick with Cam. She’s going to have to stick with whoever they hire in January. And she’s going to have to stick with them for a while. You better hope they’re good. You better hope all of them are good. Borggoni, Cam, and whoever they hire as head coach. You better hope they’re all good because I don’t think Amy’s gonna want to do this again because she knows now her her reputation. She knows this is what people are saying about her and she doesn’t like that. So, as well. So, I I I I don’t know. Stuff like that scares me. It scares me. Especially when you fire coach that early, knowing that you’re drafting or you’re picking in a position you’re picking for for a reason. Bring in another coach and still not having the players is not going to change a goddamn thing. Um, in most cases that would be true, but again, if you haven’t watched the film, if you have not watched what’s going on, and I understand some of it, like it’s not I’m not going to say if they had another coach, the Titans would be good. No, their roster’s bad. Their wide receiver group’s one of the worst in the league. Secondary is bad. Edge rush room is a barren land. But I mean, whether it’s the end of half sequences, Callahan not understanding the rules, having to give up play calling duties, the offensive scheme where nobody can get open, where nobody is schemed open, the conservative calls over and over again. Like it’s it there’s so much of this that goes beyond just oh they’re just being impatient. You could have given this guy five years and you would have been two and 15 three and 14 every year. I I’m trying to think a quarterback that didn’t I mean, hey, Baker Mayfield, wasn’t uh uh um Freddy K fired doing Baker’s rookie year, right? So, it this is not this is not new. This has been going on. You go back the last you go back the last decade plus and go back and look at them one overall pick. I guess that’s another thing that I don’t understand. I know it’s not ideal and I know we don’t like love that, but that that the head coach fired in the middle of of Cam’s rookie season, but as Shannon just said, like this is not new. It’s not like this is just the death nail in Cam Ward’s career. Trevor’s playing okay and he’s had three different coaches. He had Urban Meyer and then Doug Peterson and now Liam Cohen. Bryce is playing a lot better. Took him a little bit to get there, but he’s got there. Caleb Williams has quickly turned it around as playing better. Like it’s not like this is a death nail. I mean, they just brought up Baker. This is this happens pretty frequently that that guys have their head coach fired. I mean, and I don’t remember anybody giving the Jaguars grief for firing Urban Meyer in the middle of Trevor Lawrence’s rookie year because they knew he was that bad. They knew it was that disastrous of a situation. This is the same type of thing without the off the- field scandal that Urban Meyer had. But still, this is the same type situation. It’s that bad. Nobody criticized the Bears for firing Matt Eberfloose in the middle of Caleb Williams rookie season cuz they understood it. Yeah, it’s not ideal, but you still you understand why it had to happen. I don’t understand why. And I I do understand why. It’s because they don’t know anything about Titans. Like they they just don’t know. They just assume because of the Titans have fired so many people and they assume because it’s the Titans that it must be something stupid going on. And I get that and see their quarterbacks get fired during that first year. Crazy because a lot of times he was there uh uh the year before and they get to work quarterback and they get you got to go. Yeah. Okay. Hugh Hugh Jack. Okay. Okay. So, see, it’s this is this is not this is not something new. It’s been going on, but I think now we’re starting like, damn, what do you expect? But here’s the thing. Like, it benefited Caleb Williams. Like, is anybody here that thinks Caleb Williams is worse off because they fired Matt Eberloose in the middle of his rookie season and then went to Ben Johnson? No, he’s 100% better off. Does anybody think Trevor Lawrence is worse off right now because they fired Urban Meyer, then went to Doug Peterson, then went to Liam Cohen? No. He’s better off than he’s ever been from a team that that let Derrick Henry go. You didn’t get anything for him. And you traded away AJ Brown for Trillin Brook uh uh Burks. Trillen Brook. Yeah. And now he’s in the dark. He’s in he was in Denver, I think, today or last week working out. So, do you think that is a team that is equipped? No. You let Derek Henry walk out the door scotfree. You traded AJ Brown. Now all this is true. Now he’s Now this is all true. The big issue goes beyond Callahan. It’s everything that led up to Callahan. Brian Callahan was a bad hire. They should have I talked about this on the weekly Wednesday bonus Patreon episode I did today. They should have fired him in January when they fired Karthon. Carthon I think in hindsight was a bad hire. Um, but what he’s talking about here with Derrick Henry, I understand Derrick Henry wasn’t traded. He was a free agent who wanted to leave. But what he’s alluding to, and it’s very smart of him to bring up, the Titans had an opportunity to trade Derrick Henry in the middle of Raybull’s last season, they had the opportunity to trade Derk Henry to the Ravens and get something in return for him, probably a significantly high draft pick for him. They chose to keep him and then they let him walk for nothing. That’s why Shannon keeps saying they let him walk scot-free. They let him walk and got nothing in return. They could have traded Derrick Henry just like they traded Kevin Byer at that same time that season and gotten something in return for him. Instead, they stuck it out a meaningless season with him and they got nothing for him and then he ended up going to Baltimore anyway. That’s a good point. And then the AJ trade just goes without saying. Now you the be you got you had one of the better coaches Mike Brael. Yeah. And you fired him. Damn. Who who who going to be the next coach? Well, Mike McCoy is was on the staff, so he’s taking over. He was the head coach at uh the Chargers. So, he’s the interim. He was in he was the offensive coordinator in Denver when the Denver went to that Super Bowl and they got the doors blown off him. Um uh but he uh he the s he was at the he I think they were San Diego then and end up moving they went to the playoffs his first year but then he ended up losing his job. So he he’s the interim um coach at this point in time. I just don’t think I just don’t think uh uh they have an idea. You trade your best player, the best coach you’ve had in a very very long time. You fire him, you’ve gone through two, three general managers in in a span of five years. That’s not that’s not the the continuity that you need in order to build a winning program. I just don’t I just don’t I don’t know if they’re going to get it right this time around either, Joe. Well, listen listen. And if they don’t if they don’t get it right, we might as well put our goddamn name in the hat and see what we can come away with. Stop. Get us a little opportunity, you know. Hey, listen. We We can diversify our portfolio. No, I’m good. My port portfolio is diversified. Okay. Okay. It don’t It don’t hurt to add a little more now. Anyway, I toward the end right there. That’s straight facts. whether I understand they needed to fire Callahan, but to go from where they were just a few years ago, which was number one seed in the AFC, everything’s clicking on all cylinders, to where they are now so quickly. Yeah, it’s incompetence by the organization. Not because they fired Callahan the other day, but because of all of these firings, all of these bad hires, letting AJ go, letting Derek go for nothing. I know some of it’s unavoidable. Guys get older, they retire. Taylor Lewan got older, he had to retire. Ben Jones, a lot of those guys on the offensive line got older and retired. Um, you know, Ryan Tanahill, you knew that was a limited time thing, but while they had that team, they weren’t drafting well. That’s why John Robinson was fired because he, you know, he was the analytics department and he was he was going to do it all on his own and he missed on nearly every pick he made over a three-year span. And so that sets you up for failure. Then you trade AJ, who’s the best receiver he ever had. Then you let Derrick go for nothing. Then Tanahill retires and these other guys retire. Then I mean, yeah, I I was in favor of the Vrabel firing because the Titans were six and 18 in Vrabel’s last 24 games. He was devoted to coaches and coordinators that weren’t good. But I don’t have a leg to stand on anymore because when you fire it up with, excuse me, when you follow it up with the worst coaching hire that I’ve ever seen maybe in NFL history with Callahan, I don’t have much of a leg to stand on. Like I can’t sit here and tell you why they should have gotten rid of Rael because when you replace him with with what you replaced him with. Yeah. I don’t have much a leg to stand on anymore. It’s just a bad look for the whole organization. Yeah. It was they had to let him go, but it’s still a bad look for the organization. And this next head coaching hire is going to be one of the most important of my lifetime. It sounded like I got emotional right there because my voice got choked up, but I’m not. I just my voice got choked up. It’s going to be one of the most important head coaching picks of my life. Um because you’ve got to stabilize this organization. You have to you have to bring some calmness to this dysfunction and and let it set and marinate for a while because this is ridiculous, man. This is ridiculous. Tighten up everybody.

  1. Ocho's logic I get some if it… but both of them r not in tune to the situation… cause they do not watch the Titans… so wit that being said… shut up cause u don't watch them… there was no justification to keep Callahan…

  2. I'm tired of hearing that our roster isn't good… the right coach can win wit this roster… how this season u have seen Coaches win wit reserve players cause most of their key players r hurt… it's because of the culture there… cause of quality coaching… it wasn't good n wk 3 to hear a player from the opposing team say after the game which they won say… I could tell during warm ups that team was sluggish n not motivated to play…

  3. I get no one is checking for the Titans but please do your due diligence prior to giving a take. So many of these podcasters and “analysts” have missed the mark specifically when discussing the Titans. It’s so annoying. For this reason I stopped watching Shannon and Ocho long ago. We understand who is considered the best player in the draft goes to the worst team in the league…this is where it is KEY when breaking down a team you do your homework!!! 🙄 Callahan wasn’t progressing AT ALL in any way that gave us even the slightest glimmer of hope and a “yes we can work with that.”

  4. Brad – if you haven’t watched the titans press conference with brinker and borgonzie the night of callys firing the press ate them up 😂 very interesting on some of there responses

  5. How do we not draft arch manning if he’s available? Our qb room will be manning, ward and Levis! We need a coach that has sons. 3 very competitive boys. That would be cool.

  6. Ocho and Shannon would never blame ward. Ward will just keep having excuses for his poor play. Will levis will be the starter the start of next season.

  7. I kinda agree with ocho I’m probably more in the middle because honestly both years brain was there the rosters was either mid or bad like our roster got worse his first year seem like Levis mad him look bad lol now this season the lack of talent on offense is making him look worse than what he might be….at some point we gotta look at brinker and amy
