Derik Queen interview | Pelicans-Mavericks Postgame 11/5/2025

talking about the the stops you guys were able to kind of get down the stretch especially I mean tonight last night coming up with some some big stops especially to win these these last three four minutes of games. Um I feel like that’s a chemistry thing that uh the first five games we had a lot of lot of mislaps uh a lot of mistakes and then now we just talk about exe executing on defense and offensive end and then we just keep coming up with stops just keep trusting us. It was a big stop by Herb. Great rebound by Trey. Um, and yeah, it’s just we’re just gonna keep building off that. How much is that chemistry still building for you? You I mean, you didn’t get that preseason. You didn’t get a lot. I mean, training camp you have to, you know, be on the side. How much are you still trying to work on that right now? Um, first it kind of started with DJ. DJ just kept uh just kept being like the focal point. remember we we added him to our our players group chat and he just two days later he he just automatically sent us a text. Nobody I mean of course some people know him. He been in league but nobody really got to really know him and just and he just motivated us and we got we got some dubs and then back with Jose man Jose didn’t have that chemistry how he just jacked me up. I rub his head and stuff at first. So I think it’s still growing every day and we just trying to keep on growing and get better. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Willie Green uh bust out laughing in the middle of a game. Uh congratulations on doing that. What did you just point to the bench? Would you say something to the bench? No. Um I think it was that dunk cuz uh Lon and DJ talking about I don’t get no dunks and stuff. And um and another thing I feel like that’s my personality. Uh Coach Willard, my my college coach, serious person. Coach Bole, high school coach, very serious person. I feel like I made all them laugh and of excitement and and I mean we all won. You’ve had two backto-back, you know, very productive performances. Just what are some of the takeaways you can have uh going forward? Um just just keep on taking care of the ball uh just keep on building our chemistry. Just keep on running the win streak up and just keep on getting better. And then just what are some things you’re currently focused on like as you go through your rookie season uh from a development stand? Just a variety of things. I’m not saying I’m uh I’m like held back, but those those three months of being sideline was tough. It was really no room. It was no room of like really like working on my game. It was just legs and conditioning and stuff. I mean, that’s a part of my game also, but like I feel like and then like I got thrown in the first game and I feel like just them trusting me and me getting more comfortable. We’re just going we’re just going to keep building off that. Coach said that you know you’re a student of the game, you make sure that you ask a lot of questions even in that time when you were just working out to get in the game. Just talk about why that’s important to make sure that you always learning. Uh yeah, I mean it’s important uh cuz rookie it’s a different game from college that we all coming from. Rookies is always wanting to learn, always wanting to ask questions and I’m one of those guys and and me being around DJs got me comfortable just just talking, yapping, asking asking questions and just and just me being vocal. Appreciate you, sir.

  1. If young fella keeps playing like this, he will be in the league for 15 years, he has old man veteran moves. I like watching him and fears play. Pelicans basketball will be entertaining for the next 5 years at least. These rookies are ballin

  2. DJ need to stay on this team because hes a really good mentor to DQ. plus Jose need to be in rotation with Fears. when Z come back and mesh with these guys, i think the Pels could do some damage. i think with Looney playing, this team is just different now. ill tell you this, if anyone ever been in group fighting, you want big massive guys in your corner so having Z, DJ, and Looney makes a huge difference to your confidence when playin against bigger opponents.
