Who Would You Rather Have Right Now: Marty or Mikko? ML&K React on ASR!
Let me ask a question to the the listeners now as I asked this question earlier which is a little straw poll. Straw pole. Oh yeah. 11.5 million a year over eight years for Marty Nachos. He has taken the place of Miko Rantin. Mo I think was offered something similar to this which he thought he would get more and then turns out he gets an extra 500 uh thousand a year from Dallas. But we know state income tax and all that. It’s a lot more. Whatever. For this price, would you rather have Marty Nachos or would you rather have Mo? Stylistically, the way that they play, they’re very different types of players, but which one is the better fit for the cash? I asked this to Jared Bednar a couple weeks ago when he was on with us about the differences between the two. He said this. Yeah. So, different players in a lot of respects. Um, both super talented guys, but like one of the strengths of Mikos was packing the puck down low in the offensive zone. You know, a defender’s on his back. He’s still able to handle the puck, get his eyes up, find the open man. Um, really good in traffic because he’s so big and strong, you know, an elite passer and an elite shooter, right? And then you got Marty who’s he’s a he’s a great transporter of the puck. A little bit more dynamic with his movement like through the neutral zone, out of the D zone, carrying the puck into the offensive zone, getting set up. Historically, a little bit more of a perimeter guy in the offensive zone. So, there’s his answer for the differences, but I want to see yours now. Uh, just quickly, um, I’m watching First Take and they have breaking news that the Jags are placing Travis Hunter on the IR after suffering injury. Suffer a knee injury in practice. I also thought that Cam Newton was wearing a costume. He’s just being Cam Newton. I was going to say Cam Newton dresses like this every single day. This is nothing new to Halloween is sort of a turnoff to Cam Newton. It’s sort of like, hey, everybody else has now jumped up to my standard. Ryan Clark is dressed as I think Willy Wonka and sitting next to him is Cam Newton. I go, “What’s Cam Newton dressed as?” I was trying to figure it out and I go, “Oh, he’s just Cam Newton.” But anyway, dude, dude, if you wear an ugly Christmas if you if you if you wear an ugly Christmas sweater every day of the year when Christmas parties roll around, then it’s Yeah, it’s a bit of a turnoff. It’s like, nah. I just couldn’t imagine the effort he has to undergo to get ready to do a show every day, to wear all those layers. Yeah. Um, but getting back to this, there’s a lot of Marty Nachos on here, Mo. A lot of people. And And look, I the the qualifier I had earlier is everything else that came with the Marty Nachos trade, you still got. So, you still got Brock, you still got Drury, you still got all those different things. Well, I I would say this is probably a much more fair question if you ask it after the ABS win again. You know, I think that people are going to be biased because you won with Rantin. He was in the lineup. You won a Stanley Cup. You know, he was a big part of that obviously. So, when the ABS do win again, I think it’ll be much more of a of a fair question. But when you look back at it, and again, they’re different players, but they’re both, let’s just both call them top 20 scorers in the National Hockey. League. I think Marty right now is like 20 tied for 22nd. Mo’s probably somewhere in the in the mid 20s. They’re both real topend players. And I think that when you get everything that came with it, you when you look back at the deal, man, you allowed your team to get a lot deeper. I mean, you you really did. And you you it allowed you to resign Nelson at the at the tag that he’s at right now and so on. And the deal overall, I think when you look at the going price in the future, I mean, 11 and a half per for a top 20 score in the league is pretty damn good. I I you know I think three years ago, oh my god, $12 million a year, that’s a lot of money. Or even four years ago, whatever. It’s not that way anymore because the cap’s going up up up and so everybody’s getting a little bit more of the pie. Can I ask you something else real quick, Mo, about the contract itself? We all kind of thought that Capri off was going to skew the numbers for a whole bunch of different guys and it doesn’t feel like that’s happened. Is that because is it because McDavid took his contract the same thing over a couple years? No, I think it’s because people realize that the Capri soft deal is incredibly unique to him and to that team. Yeah. That that that was the only way he was going to stay is if you really really overpaid him. And the Wild simply could not let him get away. You I mean it it would set their franchise back years if he goes someplace else. It really would. So they realize that’s that’s a that’s that’s a complete one-off. So what did what’s the number on Niches? What what’s he getting? 11 and a half. Okay. So, what would they What do you assume? Say it right. Say it right, dude. But the coach doesn’t say it right. So, I’m not What do you assume the ABS final offer was to Mo? Oh, I’m I’m guessing it probably had to be I I don’t know, Vic. I’m guessing probably somewhere around 12 probably or close to it. I mean, I I put it this way. I think it was probably what Marty is getting right now. I think this I think that’s Yeah, that’s probably it. Um, I mean, is that is that what they want? I I who knows if anybody would have settled or whatever the case may be. I don’t know. I don’t know what went on behind closed doors and all that situation. I really have no idea. Yeah, but I think this is I think this is a good contract. You got a younger player. When you I guess I’m a little bit biased because I obviously do the games and I see every single game he does, but when you watch the chemistry between he and McKinnon Yeah. dude, it’s pretty special. It it it it really is. and to have a guy that’s able to play with 29. Um it it it’s better for everybody. I mean right now McKinnon is a you know he’s one of the best players in the planet and I think that Marty Nachos obviously looks at it and says hey um I can be even more productive with you know with this guy as my center coming down the wing. Well that was the observation I had. The question you posed there uh Brett who would you rather have I would love to pose that question to McKinnon. Yeah. Like like now that the contracts are settled, they both got eight-year deals. They’re both around the same number. If you were offered a straightup trade, Mo for Nes, would you do it? What would McKinnon say? I’m curious to hear. I I would He would never say it. He would never admit it. I would love to know it, though. But you you got to keep in mind, too, though, that I mean, they’re friends, you know? I mean, that they they played together for an awfully long time. They won together. So, I think that there’s there’s always going to be that lean to your personal buddy. But, but if you if you put if you put truth serum in them and asked him, I mean, they’re different players because again, I think coach laid it out correctly. Yeah. You know, Nous is is more of a of a dynamic puck lugging, you know, he’s a better skater, he’s faster, but he’s more of a perimeter guy. You know, Rantonin would go to the front of the net. But now, as you watch I’ll tell you I’ll tell you what’s interesting though. You watch Natus now and you watch his game progress. Dude, he’s starting to get into those dirtier areas more. He’s starting to go go down and dirty more than he ever has. So, Mo, I know you bring up the friendship thing and I know that has to be part of the problem, part of the issue because listen, Nate gets married in the offseason. Of course, Mo’s going to be there. They’re friends. But sometimes you trade I’d trade you for Nick Wright in a heartbeat. I mean, you you could be friends with someone and not want them around. You really want to look at that hair every single day? You really think that’s what you want? I’m not. I’ll do the wig thing if you want me to. I’ll I’ll I’ll come in with the with the the the long hair. Whatever Whatever he’s going through in life right now. Good for him. Come on, man. I’ll be you, Doug. I’ll do it. Uh I’m telling you, Mike Eps, dude, Mike Eps is so underrated. Oh my god. You ever seen the movie All About the Benjamins? It’s amazing. Where he wins the lottery, but he’s being chased down by It’s so funny. Um, dude, he’s he’s really great. No, come on, man. I’ll be your dog.
Marty Nachos is staying in Denver for 8 more years! $11.5 mil per.
Now that both Marty & Mikko have signed comparable deals with their respective teams & the whole trade saga is in the books…
Who would you rather have on the Avs right now? Nachos or the Moose?

I thought Brett dressed up like a duck for halloween but its just his stupid looking hat
I feel like it's easier in hindsight, but the Avs weren't making headway in the Rantanen negotiations, and the risk was too high of just letting him walk for nothing at all. I also think like, right now, we all know how much the cap is going to go up, which we didn't know at the time of the Rantanen trade. The decision to trade Rantanen for Necas was the right decision, given the information available at the time. Also, maybe a bit of an unpopular opinion, but we'd tried a couple more runs with the same guys at the top, and it wasn't working… the window is now, and something needed to change.
ppl seem to leave out we got drury with that trade to ,and u seen now much rather have both of then instead of mikko . and dont kid ur selfs mikko wanted 14 mil he has the same agent as draisitel .marty at 8×11.5 is gonna turn into a steal anyway u look at it .
Not a fair question because Mikko was reportedly asking for 14…but Necas for me because of this reality
Necas is plus 7 and Mikko is -1.
For the Avs – I take necas. My reason is the mikko/mac/makar trio was going stale and teams had them figured out. Mikko was not a big factor in the previous playoffs – Chu was. Making a change was the right thing to do and we’re already seeing larger set of zone entry/rush options that use Mac in unpredictable ways. Now, looking forward, we’re already seeing MAC start to slow down and become more of a center ice player. In two years Marty’s speed will ensure we can continue to play avalanche hockey and Mac can take on more of a Mikko role. Also, we’re seeing how important creativity is becoming league wide and Marty is far more creative than mikko.
Historically, mikko is other worldly. Marty is the future.
