Bam bam sports back in the saddle will to go. Will go the quaff is back after a great week of work at the UC. And our guy on the controls back on them. Joey C. Joey. Happy Sunday gentlemen. Bears win it all. I Yeah, I don’t know if Chicago sports fans could have handled that Bears game and then like a miraculous Bulls comeback victory at the Garden. That’s a very I think our brains all would have exploded if we out of our ears witnessed all of that. Chicago, we’re only allowed so much happiness at any given time and that Bears game was something. That’s cool. But hey, we’re five and0 and the Bulls went 5-0 and then took their first loss of the season to what is expected to be a very good Knicks team on their floor and they were out for revenge cuz the Bulls whooped them up on the Bulls floor on Friday. Yeah, they were out for blood and rightfully so. That’s that’s how you should play. They took it personally. Shout out Michael Jordan as all you know good teams should do. They took it kind of person. You could tell Jaylen Brunson absolutely took it personally cuz he came in from the jump and wanted to play well. 19 points in the first quarter for that young man though. Like he was he was awesome. Uh Ojanna Novi came out on fire uh for the Knicks, man. The three-point shooting was out of control for the New York Knicks, man. like they were really really serious about establishing their dominance very early in this game and they did it behind the three-point line and then it just kind of metriculated from there and you saw that they were able to get bench scoring together, second chance points together, rebounding was on point. Like all of those things were clicking for them. They were more physical out there. Uh they were Yeah, they were pushing and shoving like for sure. And the refs weren’t calling it like that. So what you going to do? You going to keep doing it. Those are the rules. So as long as they continue to keep going and keep moving it in the in that kind of fashion, then it wasn’t, you know, it was going to be a tough day at the office. I’ll say it like that for the Bulls. Now, I would absolutely give the Bulls credit for the way they continued to battle in this team. They continued to fight. They really did really fight uh this New York Knicks team. They even came back and took the lead for for a point in time in that third quarter, man. like they really really didn’t give up. So, I appreciate that mentality that they had, but the Knicks, you know, it was just overpowering for them tonight. It really was. And a lot of it was just like in every sort of controllable element of the game that we’ve talked about in terms of the possession battle. You just look at the the field goal differential. The Knicks uh had 95, the Bulls had 93. The three-pointers you mentioned, Dave, uh the Knicks 20 of 42 on threes. It’s just going to be hard to win against anybody when they’re making 20 threes in a game, let alone shooting 47 and a half percent on them. The Bulls shot it pretty well from three. 17 of 40. That’s 42 and a half percent. Um but again, you’re down by nine points at the free at the three-point line. Yeah, the free throws nine uh for 11 for the Bulls. Not great, not terrible, but when the Knicks go 22 of 22, it’s hard to compete there. And then the turnovers, um you know, the Bulls had 14, the Knicks had 12. So, it’s just every single facet of the game they were conceding in those margins and it’s just hard to win when you lose, you know, two or three of those, let alone all of them, and your opponent hits so many more threes. So, it’s just a tough battle. I will say this, I would assume did not play and I felt like his impact on the game, especially in contrast to that last one where you just saw him putting relentless pressure on the paint, attacking closeouts, attacking off the dribble. There were so many times in this game where it just felt like the Bulls could not get anything going towards the basket. No paint pressure and that means no one’s sliding over to help. The Knicks are never in rotation and you’re never going against a defense where you have an advantage. And I just felt like it was more than the 17 points on seven of 11 shooting or whatever I would have averaged because it was every single possession where he was putting that pressure on the rim and without that the Bulls just did not really have any way to get into their identity offensively. No, it’s very true. I mean, even looking uh you mentioned the turnovers, man. Even like blocks, they lost that one. Uh assists, they lost that one. Rebounding, they only lost by one, but you know, still took that L. Uh but for me, it was the fast break points cuz that’s what the Bulls have kind of been hanging their hat on in this in these victories that they even having. They lost that battle 24 to 19. And some of that 19 came later, you know what I’m saying, in the game. Yeah. But the Knicks, a lot of that stuff, they just really rolled through them. Even points in the paint. I know the Bulls won it, but at one point the Knicks were winning that, you know, late in that third quarter, they were winning winning that battle, man. So, they they beat the Bulls at the stuff the Bulls were do have been doing well this year, right? And and like to goat’s point, it’s not just about Io’s box uh score, you know, missing from the game tonight production-wise, but you you just mentioned the fast break points, Dave, and the Bulls wanting to play that style. Some some fast break points the Bulls get are oneman fast breaks by IO. like that’s one of the greatest parts of his game. And I think just from a larger perspective, the Knicks dictated the pace of this game. They slowed it down. It was very physical. Uh I think I saw somebody in the chat uh mentioning the officiating perhaps being a bit one-sided tonight. And hey, maybe you get that in the garden when Jaylen Brunson is out there playing in his Knicks jersey, but he has earned that respect by the refs of this league. I don’t think anybody on this Bulls roster has that level of respect from NBA officials. And I also don’t think it was that one-sided of a game official officials wise compared to what I saw some Bulls fans tweeting about tonight. Like it was just a physical game and the Knicks were the more physical team, which you know, if if you lose that battle and then then you send the Knicks to the free throw line 22 times and they shoot 100% at the line. Like the Bulls lost by 12, they lost the free throw battle by 13. There’s your game. As you pointed out, go the Bulls did their best to keep up with the frenetic pace at which the Knicks were shooting from from downtown tonight. And kudos to the Bulls for keeping it close that way. But like, go, you talked a lot in training camp when you were hearing from Billy and all the players talking about a more physical brand of basketball, particularly on the defensive end. I feel like they got, you know, dealt a pretty harsh dose of reality in that department tonight because the Knicks are one of the more physical teams in this league. Absolutely. And you you can see that reflected in the pace. 98 possessions in this game. The Bulls have been averaging 103. So that’s just not the brand of basketball that the Bulls like to play. It’s a really tough thing to do, especially and we mentioned IO being out. Kobe hasn’t played like the Bulls guard depth. And this this was something that I noticed early on in the game was that uh they started with Giddy and Trey Jones out there and then when Trey came off and it was just Giddy out there, they started to sink a little bit. And then when Giddy came off and it was just Trey out there, it was even worse. And it’s like these guys are really good players, but when you ask them to do too much where they’re trying to create everything on their own, it’s just it’s overburdening. It’s just too much for them to do. And they can get away with it when they’re sharing those responsibilities because if you put pressure up on Giddy, he can hit it ahead to Trey and get you into the offense early. If you attack a, you know, a drive and you kick it out to IO and he’s able to attack a closeout and get downhill, that’s just like more ball handlers on the court to create those drives, which put pressure on the defense and allows you to get into the easy shots that you’ve been getting. Without that, it’s just really tough. And so when you have lineups out there where it’s like Giddy or Trey, and then Patrick Herder, Julian Phillips, and Jaylen Smith, there’s just not enough shot creation. And we know this is a team that doesn’t really do it with isolations. They’re last in the league in terms of isolations this year, but they are really pick and roll heavy and they are a team that drives a ton. They get the most paint touches, the most drives per game. It just felt, and I’d like to like look at the numbers in this when they when they um come up, it felt like they had nowhere close to the amount of rim attempts or the amount of paint touches that the Knicks had. And so when you think about the physicality and the free throws, that’s a big part of it. If you’re getting all the way to the rim and finishing or drawing fouls, that’s how you get to the foul line. That’s how you get open threes on kickouts. The Knicks were doing that. The Bulls just couldn’t. And it wasn’t for any fault of any one player. It just didn’t feel like they had enough shot creation and ball handling on in any of these lineups to be able to make the Knicks pay for that and take advantage of their ability to create advantages. No, that’s true. And even guys when they were able to get to the paint, it was guys like Trey Jones. So, it made those those shots a little more easy to contest for the other team. So, some of them would block, some of them would just turn over. Some of them, you know, he had to pass it out and kick it out like that. Uh, we saw Modis when he would get to the paint, he would kind of, you know, fade away a little bit more. Then he would like go into it more physical, you know, and when you’re doing that, you’re not going to get those calls unless you’re that guy, you know what I mean? So, and it’s so that part was a struggle. Giddy is the only one who is gonna be the guy put his head down and go to the bucket. That’s his thing. He’s gonna do that. So, you missed that with IO out there as you mentioned, Matt. Uh, you’re gonna miss that with him being out there because that’s one man fast break. He’s going to the bucket. Like, that’s what’s gonna happen. He has six attempts at the free throw line last game. So, he’s going to do that. And so, taking that away and taking that off the floor, not having anybody else and also what hurt them is also not having anybody else who can create their own shot uh on the floor for them. We knew that was going to come to bite them at some time and it just happened to be this game and it bec it was glaring because I just wasn’t there. They didn’t have another guy who can create, you know, on his own because I can create his own. He can say, “Give me the ball. One man fast break. I’m going to the bucket.” I was watching Mike Brown talk about that last game. Talking about how they didn’t uh account for that kind of play from IO Dumu, how he gets to his right and he’s going to get to the get there and get you like six or eight points just off of that one play right there. So, they I’m sure they wanted to account for it tonight and you could tell that they did. Even though he wasn’t out there, they were prepared. You saw guys bodying up. got Josh Giddy full court when he’s trying to bring the ball up. Like the Knicks just wanted it. And you got to remember the Knicks were on a three-game losing streak. They didn’t want to lose four in a row, especially two in a row to the Chicago Bulls, man. Especially at Madison Square Garden. They didn’t want to do that. So, they were playing with something to really truly play for and they came out and they showed it. Shout out to everybody hanging out uh with us in that chat, Bulls Nation. Hit the like button if you haven’t done it yet. Just cuz the Bulls lost doesn’t mean we can’t still spread the wealth and the joy of the like button. We all about that love. Exactly. Uh and throw us a super chat if you’re feeling generous tonight. Um PO121 said, “Damn, now it’s harder to let go of IO.” And I think Cap Captain Stucky said earlier uh something along um something along similar lines. Oh, Captain Stucky asking the question, “Is IO more important to the Bulls than Kobe? I hope we keep both.” That is an interesting question because Bulls fans have been win after win after win out of the gate this season saying, “And we’re doing all this without Kobe White. Just imagine how good this team is gonna be when we get Kobe back. We get Zack Collins back.” Uh hopefully soon and and uh maybe a little less soon for for Zack. Um hopefully we’ll get an update at least on Kobe because we’re coming up on that twoe timeline from the initial uh initial report. But you play your first game without IO as that incredible just match that comes in off the bench and gives you that spark and you lose. Yeah. And meanwhile you’re stacking W’s without Kobe. Yeah. And some might say, “Wow, wait till we get Kobe back. Then we’re really going to be good.” Some might question, and this isn’t me, this just Captain Stucky asking the question in the chat. Does this tell us anything about how valuable Kobe White is to this team versus IO Dumu? And again, this is just like a one game sample size where the Knicks did almost everything right tonight and handed the Bulls an L. So, there is that element to it. But it is interesting to at least raise that question knowing that they’re both on expiring contracts. I I think that this game it showed that both of them were vitally important. Uh because we know like we just talked about what IO provides you and what they were missing with him. Well, I also talked about not having another guy on the floor create their own shot because some games every it’s not going to go right. Yeah. Some games everything, you know, every pass isn’t going to be super crisp. Every three-point shot isn’t going to go down. Guys aren’t going to shoot 50 and 60% from the three. You know, like Isaac Kora isn’t going to go crazy. Like even though he had like 14 tonight, shout out to him for that. But you’re going to have to have it’s going to come a point in time where you’re going to have to have your guy against their guy and you’re going to have to go at it. And Kobe is that guy, you know, for the Chicago Bulls. He is that guy. Give me the ball. I can get this. I’ll cross it up. I can get to the paint as well. And I can hit you with this step back three. So, there’s multiple facets to his game that you all already know. I’m not telling you anything you don’t know, but it was vitally important to have that kind of player out there tonight. and they didn’t have that guy. So, not having him is glaring for it tonight. And not having IO is glaring for it tonight. It just wasn’t as glaring for uh Kobe because they won. You know what I mean? They kept winning. And winning is the ultimate south, ladies and gentlemen. You’ll forget everything. You ain’t even thought about Zack Collins. You know what I’m saying? With this and now in this loss, you’re like, man, wait till we get Zack Collins back in here, man. This be be a little more physical out there on the floor. And and just really quick before we go to break, you know, go talking about the ball handlers. Maybe it’s not a question of who’s more valuable to this team, Kobe or IO. It’s man, the Bulls are hardressed to get wins as a greater than the sum of their parts team when they are missing the IO part and the Kobe part, right? Yes, I think that’s the correct answer. I I feel like I have a lot of thoughts on this, so maybe we should Yeah, that’s why that’s why I spoke. Absolutely. Uh let’s knock out our first ad break right there. Despite the L, we’re here to talk about it. uh group therapy. This is our first group therapy session. This is our first group therapy session. It took us until November 2nd. Damn, that’s great. That’s cool. We’re five in one. Things are still grooving. It’s good stuff, baby. Uh but so before the break, we were talking about the impact of missing now not only Kobe White tonight, but also another reliable ball handler and offensive creator in Io Dumu. And go, you had a follow-up thought on that. Yeah, I just think there’s so much value in having two guards out there that can really control the ball and create offense for themselves and others at the same time. Um, as we talked about in preseason a little bit, like it’s a little bit counterintuitive to have, you know, low volume three-point shooters out there together, Aoro, Trey, and Giddy is like a little bit maybe dangerous. But the way that it’s actually functioning in practice is you have multiple guys that can create off the dribble, get downhill, and that keeps the off the defense uh collapsing and moving. And the Bulls have been at their best this year when they’ve been attacking the paint relentlessly. We saw that obviously for Mio. uh last game was the perfect example where he was just downhill every single time he touched the ball. So, I don’t want to like sit here and say it’s got to be Kobe or IO. I think from a cap standpoint, there’s really no problems there. Like, you can keep both of those guys if you want to. I think the bigger question is just like who could you add around them? Um, and so if you can keep both of those guys, I think they should because one, you’re probably getting like relatively good deals on both of them. I I I’m not too worried about either of these guys getting, you know, these giant contracts from other teams. Okay. And then two, I think having four guys, Trey, Giddy, Kobe, and IO out there. You can mix and match combinations. Um, the Bulls don’t really have anybody that can create in isolation. And so Kobe is really the closest thing they have to that. And he was really good at it down the stretch last year. We’ll see if that’s something he can sustain at that level. Um, but they do need somebody that can do that. And I also think Kobe is so talented at moving off the ball, playing next to another ball handler that he really can do both. He can be the lead guy, he can be the second secondary guy. He can be the one that’s attacking closeouts. He can be the one that’s creating the advantage in the first place and kicking out to a guy who can then attack a closeout. And I owe the same thing. Like he’s a better on the ball defender. Uh he, you know, they all have their kind of strengths and weaknesses and I think that’s why you can find combinations that work. But to me, the big thing is, and we saw it tonight, the the ability to always have two of those guys out there at the same time is what greases the wheels of the Bulls offense. Without that, I think that’s where you get a little bit sticky. That’s where Trey Jones has to create a little bit more than he can and shoot like a pull-up mid-range shot. That’s not really his game. That’s where Giddy gets into some of that stuff, too. And he can do it. Giddy was fantastic. We could talk about him. Um, but that’s just like not what he does best. And I think having all four of those guys out there, obviously not at the same time, but some combination of them is what’s going to help them play at their best and also everybody else to where you don’t necessarily need to play this brand of ISO basketball that I think a lot of people are gravitate towards because that’s historically how teams play at the highest level. Like the Bulls are very far away from that right now. They have had a great start and a lot of that is due to the fact that they have this depth and we haven’t even seen it seen it with Kobe and I’m very excited to see that because I think Kobe fits in so well with it. I don’t think they miss a beat. I don’t think it’s a situation where they’re playing really well without Kobe and now people need to worry about that. Kobe’s going to slot right in because of all the things that he does well. He’s going to make it work even better. Yeah, agree with that. Uh Peter J. Reformer in the chat saying it really did feel like Josh Giddy was the only one with energy out there. IO is a bundle of energy off the bench and they really missed that. Our guy Mr. Jelly, what up? Jelly said Gay’s frustration on the court uh on the court reads and breakdowns showed with good reason. When he sat down next to Iowa on the bench, it seemed like he said something like, “Are you seeing this too?” And uh Connor Leon saying this was going to be a tough one the way things line up tonight. Still really happy with Getty’s fight. It’s obvious he’s becoming more of a leader for this team. Um yeah, I mean credit to Giddy. was one of the the Bulls that was fighting out there certain parts of this game and certain parts of this team. Definitely looked and felt flat at times tonight. I think at times they were just frustrated with the the difficulty they were having generating certain looks that they have they were they were a able to get offensively in those first five wins. Um you know Giddy did his thing. What what did he finish with? 23 12 and 12 uh and and 10. Yeah 23 12 and 12. Shout out to him for that. Didn’t shoot particularly well behind the arc tonight. Had four turnovers, some good, some bad. Not his best game of the of the season, but certainly a still a strong one and a strong effort when he was trying to make things happen with just, you know, kind of a stack deck tonight. Look, that man led him, he led the Bulls in minutes, points, uh, second in rebounds, let him in assist, uh, tied for first in steals. Hey, like he let him in attempts like cuz he took 19 attempts out there. 52% from the field. Uh he struggled from three, one to five. That was the first game we’ve seen honestly in a while where I’ve seen Josh Giddy struggle from the three-point line. Not not have a good game like struggle. We saw him put up the air ball uh tonight from the three-point line. What that means is that he was nine of 14 from inside the arc. Yes. Efficiency inside. You love that. That’s exactly where I was going. Way to be in the brain, man. Boom. But and and then uh also, you know, two or two from the free throw line. I think that’s the other big stat right there is he wasn’t getting to the to the line. Uh usually Josh Giddy gets there and he’s able to draw those fouls and get there to the foul line, but he wasn’t able to do it tonight. Yeah, he was up to 6.8 a game through the first five games, which is almost double what his career high was. Yes, sir. But to to the young man’s point about his leadership, for me it was on full display uh tonight, what Josh Giddy means and what he means to this Bulls team because he can sense c sense certain things on the floor about what this team needs. Oh, they don’t need me to score right now. They just need me to facilitate. Oh, they just need me to get in there and get these rebounds right now because this guy is cooking. Oh, I don’t even need to be on the floor right now because I would assume he’s lost his mind. Like he’s understanding what this team needs. And tonight he was like, “Oh, they need somebody to score. They need somebody to be that guy tonight. Fine, I’ll take that role right there. I will get these 19 shots up and I will get these 23 points. Um, and he fought until the end. Even that steal he got towards the end of the game when it was still when it was out of reach. He’s still out there battling. Gets the steal, gets it to the bucket, gets the gets the lead to 12. Like he that’s the stuff you like. And I’m sure AK and Billy love that, you know, when they see like, oh, this is the guy we signed and said this is going to be the one running our team for the next four years. this is the veracity that he’s going to be playing with. And he’s been that way in every single game, honestly. Like, it hasn’t been a game where he hasn’t brought that energy and that competitive spirit every single time. Whether it’s worked more often than not, this would probably be the first game where it didn’t because like I said, the free throws were uh minimum and the three-point shooting was low. But in general, you cannot poo poo someone who goes to Madison Square Garden and drops you a triple double and drops you a 23 12 and 12. Like to me, that’s really impressive. Uh there was no one else with him on the team to come with him. I mean, shout out to Vuchad 17, 14, and four. Like really quiet, but 17,4 is still crazy, but it was no one else with him out there like that to uh get those big buckets uh for the Bulls, man. But Josh Giddy definitely did his job tonight in trying to lead this team to a victory. And again, I think when you talk about the whole Bulls offensive identity and like their whole goal is to like get into the paint, Giddy was the only one that could do that. Yeah. And I I feel like this was one of those games where it wasn’t like the stats that necessarily felt like that they were just incredible feat. Like obviously he had a triple double. they they are what they are, but to me it was more about like the fact that he is so good at getting into the paint and he was the only chance the Bulls had to collapse the defense and that’s how they get everything. That’s like the source of all of their offense. So, um I thought he had a really good game. Um the Bulls even in the lineups with Trey Jones out there, they like really struggle with that. Um, and I feel like Giddy’s like crosscourt passing. I tweeted a video of this where he was just like whipping these incredible passes from like top of the, you know, wing to the weak side corner to to basically try to get a guy an open shot because the defense was shading towards him. They were, you know, towards the helpline and if he’s able to whip a pass over to the corner, that can be an open shot. A lot of times it was like Auroro or Patrick Williams. those aren’t like the best possible three-point shooters in the league that you want over there with like really quick triggers, but like the Bullshits did not have a lot of open shots today and those that was their best chance to do it. And so I feel like this was a game for me that really put on display Giddy’s value, not just as somebody who can accumulate stats, but as somebody who can generate good offense. Um, with Io, with Kobe, with Trey out there, like it can be different, but um, to me the only Giddy was like the only chance the Bulls had tonight. That’s kind of the way I see it. I agree. Uh Kell Anderson 9906 in the chat said some of those emittis from Giddy were nice AF. He did have some abnormal field goal attempts tonight that weren’t like in his normal wheelhouse of shots. Yeah. And he managed to make a respectable amount of them. Feel like I s I saw him a few different times and I’d be like you took that shot and you made that shot. Okay. Uh people in the chat, a lot of people talk about the officiating and and the favorable calls. Michael Per Nicks get all the calls. cat uh getting some truly laughable calls. Uh Anthony Knicks get an assload of calls, which isn’t an excuse, but breathing on those floppers. Brunson and Cat doesn’t help. Well, yeah. Again, we we pointed out 22 of 22 from the free throw line for the Knicks. The Bulls took half as many, 11. That’ll happen some nights. Maybe maybe the refs were loving on the Knicks tonight. Yeah, I I genuinely Was there a questionable call or two that went in New York’s favor? For sure. I I’ll I’ll grant you that. Was it the reason the Bulls lost this game? Nowhere near it. I think it’s just the other question I have tonight. And yes, you miss I Dumu’s presence on both ends of the floor. This dude is a, you know, on certain nights lockdown defender. Certainly always a capable and eager and willing defender. Um, you know, maybe he checks Brunson a few times tonight if he’s out there. But it is the Yeah, the the Bulls shot well from the field. They shot better than well from behind the three-point line. They gave up 128. I got serious questions about this team’s defense still despite some of those numbers that are so impressive in their in their start. Defense is so uh we can get to that and some other thoughts on tonight’s game after we get this second ad break. Also, we will hear from our pal Mark Stein. Uh unfortunately, you’re not going to give us your thoughts on a Bulls 6 and0 start. couldn’t beat the Knicks for the second straight game uh tonight after beating them in the cup game on Friday. But across the board, are you as surprised as most national NBA reporters, pundits, and and junkies at this strong bull start? Of course I am. I take my I take my cues from CHGO Bulls. So, I I do not think you guys were touting a 5-0 start at any point in June, July, August, September. But that’s why I figured tonight was a perfect time to come on cuz either they shock the world again and go to 6 and 0 and someone has to restrain you guys from some serious overreaction or I’m here to like be part of the group therapy as you guys describe it. So, hey, you’re not you’re not going to go to 6 and 0 without the six man of the year, I dumnu. So, that that, you know, that’s the that was the issue tonight. That’s a very fair point. He him missing tonight was a big deal. Um, but I want to ask you about uh Kobe White also hasn’t been out there for those first five games. Like, talk about that impact. Are you shocked at the play even without him? I really hope that I’ve only heard a murmur of this and like I’m like this is not like real that this is not the actual sentiment. You guys tell me the sentiment is not we can trade Kobe White now. Is that really what that’s not what people really think, is it? That’s not that’s not what we’re saying. Yeah. Cuz to me Kobe White and Josh Giddy played so well in the second half. I want to see that at the start of the season. I want to see what that looks like with IO now providing this additional element of, you know, quality backcourt play. I want to see them as a trio. And I I heard what Goat said earlier and I totally agree. In today’s NBA, you want multiple ball handlers on the floor. If you have two at all times and you probably need three healthy for that, that’s usually a good thing. Good things happen when you have at least two guys who can get where they need to go and make some plays. And look, this Bulls roster as we it probably doesn’t have an allstar. Although I think Vu is off to, you know, throw tonight out. I think Vu is off to another allstar start. He was borderline in that discussion last season. But there’s a very real chance that this Bulls team is not going to have an all-star and is going to have to keep doing it by committee. But look, I think you also have to say that continuity has probably helped the Bulls in this early stage of the season. I know that the extension for Billy Donovan was not a universally celebrated bit of news, but Billy has changed this team style dramatically starting last season. Everybody talks about the fast pace that the Bulls play and that is something useful to have in teams head to to have in the opposition’s head before the ball is even thrown up to know that the Bulls are going to play fast and and run you. So I think I think you have to say that sticking with Billy Donovan, sticking with a system that everybody already knows that’s enabled that’s helped the Bulls get off to a much better start. And you know, I said this on the AllNBA podcast a couple days ago with Adam Mes, our colleague, that it’s just it’s just nice to be talking about something fun. Yeah. So often when I join you guys, we’re not having fun. Actually, no, we’re having a ball every time. You guys You guys always have fun, but you know what I’m saying? Our sub our subject our subject matter is always very serious and dower. And so it Yeah. somber. It it’s nice that to like to get carried away and to go five and0 oh my god 50 win team like I mean it’s you it’s fun 50 wins I don’t know but either way winning is fun goat winning it is and you know I think also you kind of mentioned continuity and like taking it step by step. I don’t think there was anything the Bulls were going to do last off season that like turned them from a 39 win team into a 55 win team or a championship contender. So, I do think that there’s something to be said for like building and taking steps forward. Now, they actually need to take steps forward in order to take steps forward. The last couple years that has not been the case, but you can’t argue that this is not that we’re not seeing that right now. Um, and so Mark, I’m curious from your perspective kind of like zooming out national perspective, big picture, what is the perspective on the Bulls? Like do people are people talking about this team as somebody that can, you know, win 45 plus games as some some team that is actually more respected than in years past where the national narrative has always just been what are the Bulls doing in mediocrity every single year? Yeah. Look, roster-wise, I think those questions were all still there and we haven’t seen Kobe White yet. And there that qu that will be a topic between now and February 5th at the trade deadline once Kobe comes back. What does it look like? Look, we know Josh Giddy wanted a deal that paid in the 30 million a year range. He ended up settling for 25 a year. And by all accounts, Kobe White wants more than what Josh Giddy was seeking. Are the Bulls willing to pay that? First question, will Kobe White come back and play at the level that merits that? But yeah, once he’s back and you see the full team, I think there will be a lot of curiosity about what the Bulls might do with their roster between now and February 5th. I don’t need to tell you guys because you live this every day. The Bulls are conservative in the extreme. I don’t think we ever expect inseason moves from them. But look, even if they came out and said Kobe White is going nowhere, the phone’s still going to ring. Teams know his contractual situation and they will test the Bulls resolve to see if there’s any way they can get him. But if it’s me, I want to see I want to give these guys an extended run here, two, three months, and see what it looks like when everybody’s healthy. Yo, Bzelis does look ready to take the leap that a lot of people were hoping for. So, I mean there is, you know, there is good stuff happening. No question about it. Uh, you mentioned that he is freshly signed on this new contract, uh, Mark, but Josh Giddy, I’m sure our chat would eviscerate us if we didn’t get your take on what you have seen from the$und00 million man through this sixgame sample size where, you know, tonight he put up his first triple double of the season in a losing effort. On Friday night’s win over the Knicks, he had a career-high 32. Like there’s been a lot of encouraging signs of Josh Giddy answering a lot of questions that some people had about what he can and cannot do on an NBA court. Yeah, because I remember when he signed that deal, I was clearly in the camp of that’s a good number. The Bulls did well here to get him at 25 million with the way the cap escalates. That’s a team friendly number, but I felt like the initial reaction to that contract was a lot of man, this is still too much. Who are the Bill who are the Bulls bidding against? You know, why do they do this? And look, six games is a ridiculously small sample size, but he is he is clearly playing to a higher level than the deal. So, I think given all the missteps with the roster in recent years that we’ve talked about every time I join you guys and look, even the trade, you know, it’s always going to come up that there were no picks in that deal, but like given the contract and he is playing fantastic right now. He’s leading this team. I feel like he’s doing everything that the Bulls could have hoped for after signing Giddy to that deal. You guys tell me if I’m wrong. You guys tell me if I’m wrong. No. No. No. We don’t feel you wrong at all. Simple answer. No. Um Mark, our next game is going to be against another team that is kind of a surprise right now. That’s the Philadelphia 76ers. Um, and that game will be, and we said this kind of laughing under my breath because I can’t believe I’m saying this, but it was it’s to be whoever’s going to be at the top of the East after u this game that they play on Tuesday. Looking at those 76ers though, what what is your opinion on them? And which team has surprised you the most about where they are? Because even though Philly has pieces, they still had a rookie. We still weren’t sure about Embiid’s health. I don’t think anybody had them at this high right now in the East. I would actually say Philly is the larger surprise to me because Embiid has been on a serious minutes restriction. Paul George hasn’t played. Maxi has gone to another level and Edgecomb is so NBA ready. You guys know I live in Dallas and the way a lot of people were talking about this rookie class was like Cooper flag runaway rookie of the year. just give it to him now. But you know, Dylan Harper, unfortunately, got hurt tonight in San Antonio, but Dylan Harper has been very good. Cedric Coward in Memphis has been very good. VJ Edgecomb has been ready to jump into the NBA. And the Sixers, not unlike the Bulls, are playing fast, leaning heavy on their guards. And also, you talk about a fan base that’s been through it over the last several years. You know, I’m sure they’re loving this. You know, they’re they didn’t they haven’t had McCain yet either. McCain’s finally working his way back, but it’s just it’s uh the these are just two curve balls that that really nobody was expecting. And you’re in the right conference. That’s the other thing, too. The East is so wide open. I mean, you guys have been talking all night about how hungry the Knicks were, but the Knicks have, like you said, the Knicks have dropped a few here. Mhm. Cleveland hasn’t been, you know, you’re not going to compare to a 15-0 start like we saw last season, but Cleveland is not playing at anywhere near their peak. And they’re also short-handed as well with no Garland, no Strus. So, um, and then everything every it’s up everything else in the East is up for grabs. So, Bulls fans, I’m sure, just, you know, so sick of, you know, the words play in just probably lead to convulsions triggering. But this this is this is a this is an opportunity to win 45 and move up the ladder. For sure it is. Um, Mark, I’m glad you mentioned uh the rookie class because I’ve been wanting to get your perspective on the Cooper flag experience so far. He’s done some great stuff. Nobody’s talking about it because the Mavs were off to a two and four start and it could have been guys. They had a fivegame home stand to start the season. Longest I’ve ever experienced. And I I was even thinking I I started covering the league in the 9394 season. And I’m like I don’t a fivegame home stand from the jump the the last fiveame home stand to start a season in the NBA. You got to go back to the 8384 season. Wow. The Kings were in Kansas City, not Sacramento, playing at Keer Arena. It’s the last time we saw it. And the Mavs Nmith had an absolutely wideopen rightwing three at the buzzer. That could have consigned the Mavs to a 1 and4 start. The Mavs did escape two and three, but look, they they’ve had they with the starting lineup that the Mavs have adopted. They’ve made defense the focus. Cooper Flag is listed as the point guard every night. He’s really more of a point forward. But you compare it to Philly, it certainly helps Edgecomb tremendously that he gets to play next to Maxi. the Mavs. Like I was saying, in a perfect world in today’s NBA, you have two proven ball handlers on the floor at all times to collapse defenses, get in the paint, create open threes for other guys. The Mavs often have none in this early stage of the season with no Kyrie Irving, no Dante Exom. They have signed D’Angelo Russell, Brandon Williams has been in and out of the line. I mean, they just do not have a lot at point guard. So, Cooper Flag has had to play out of position. I think he’s ultimately going to benefit from going through all this greatly, but you know, like I said, he’s he he’s had some solid nights and some tremendous moments, but the team as a whole is not doing great. So, it’s hard to get too celebratory about the Cooper flag experience when you’re two and four and you were so very nearly 1 and5 and tomorrow night Mavs are going to Houston to face a physical and monstrous Rockets team. Oh my god. Yeah, that’s nasty. Um any any update though on uh Anthony Davis and and his injury? This is a weird one because okay, Tuesday they listed him with bilateral Achilles tendonopathy which basically means both of his Achilles were sore. Yet he was listed as probable and plays Wednesday night. He lasted less than seven minutes. Two days later, MRI says calf strain. He’s out till they get back from this road trip on Tuesday. But he also did get some he got a pregame workout in. So, I mean, that’s my long- winded pretend doctor wave saying, “Guys, I do not know.” Uh, Stein, speaking of all of these NBA teams that reside in that great state of Texas, um, the Bulls have the Spurs right around the corner on their schedule. I know that that that Mavs that MA Mav Spurs rivalry is something. You have covered the NBA and its most dominant stars for a long time. I am curious to get your take on Wemby’s start to this season. Is he legitimately in the MVP conversation for you? I think he’s going to be I mean I came into this season with a very clear goal. I’ I had ne I’ve only seen WBY in person a few times and the luck just never seems to fall my way. the three or four times I’ve seen him in person, he didn’t have one of those games where he just does things that bend your brain. Yeah. And the first time he was supposed to play in Dallas, I don’t know if you guys remember this, as a rookie, he had a tangle with the ball boy on the baseline and the Spurs had to scratch him from the game. So, one of the games I was supposed to see him live, he he didn’t even play. And so, I was really like, I want to see one of these games whereby just does crazy Wemby stuff. And opening night, like you said, this is my 33rd season. I’ve been blessed to see a lot of ridiculously special individual performances. My first year as a beat rider, I was I had a courtside literally on the floor seat for David Robinson’s 71point game to clinch the scoring title in Clipperland with Dennis Rodman bringing Madonna to the game. That that’s a whole show in itself. Um Madonna in the Spurs locker room after the game. That was preop, by the way. Um, so Wembi was just like the numbers 40 and 15. I’ve seen a zillion individual performances better than that, but just it was the way he did it. He’s he’s shooting far fewer threes. He is attacking the rim relentlessly. He had seven dunks in that game and takeoff points that are just not human because I think he’s 77 now. They’re listing him at I think 75. He’s just like we’ve you he truly is you’ve just never seen anything like it. So I just hope for your guy’s sake that he has one of those nights that he like you want to see things that you’ve never seen before and he’s so capable of it. Or if we’re rooting for a Bulls win, we hope he has a night like tonight. As somebody in the chat just pointed out, Spurs are they just it just went vital. took their first L of the season in the hands of the Suns and they lost Dylan. They lost Dylan Harper tonight. So, a really bad night for San Antonio. That’s rough. And Webby finished with just nine points on four of 14. But yeah, I mean personally like I hope that the Bulls win the game and we see a crazy highlight reel kind of game from Webby cuz the dude bends your brain. Yeah. Hopefully Kobe’s back to punch one down on him again. Oh yes, that’s right. People forgive. Uh, so before we let you go, Stein, as we look ahead to this next part of the Bulls schedule, it it presents challenge after challenge. Dave mentioned the Sixers. I mentioned they got the Spurs on deck. They also have to play the Bucks in a cup game later this week. Then they’ve got to play at Cleveland. They’ve got to play the Pistons again, who they did beat in the opener, but this time in Detroit. Do you feel like Bulls fans can feel good about this team that they have if the Bulls come out of that part of their schedule and are still an above 500 team moving forward? Yeah, like the SK I mean the schedule to this point I mean okay there there’s probably been some fortune in there but like I mean I I I wouldn’t expect they go from five to one to immediately dip under 500. I mean I you know I they’ve been very solid and again I think they play in a manner that other teams don’t love dealing with and like everything in this league because there are so many damn injuries it it really depends on health. I mean they’re not because you’re doing it they’ve relied so much on bench production. The bench numbers have been so good. So when you don’t have IO I mean that’s obviously going to take a hit out of your B. They can’t really afford no no Kobe, no IO. I mean, you again, the guard production is so critical. But yeah, like I like I said, I think I think a lot of people not just take note of the record, but enjoy watching them. They’re playing it’s it’s what we saw last year, but it’s being done at a higher level by committee, and I think people are intrigued and enjoying the curiosity factor, I guess, is what I’m trying to say. Yeah. Stein, a pleasure as always. I have a question for you. But wait, wait. I have a question for you before I go. Sure. Have you guys thought of ever doing a show of just reads? Just ad reads. Yeah. For like a for like a whole hour and then like and then nominate it for an Emmy. If somebody wants to sponsor our show for 60 full minutes, I’m sure they can make that happen. We can make that happen, baby. Bring We do get sometimes that could be 60 minutes. Bring it on. I mean, I I feel like our audience might miss some of the bulls talk as much as they enjoy the anime, but you guys could like incorporate it into the ads. Like, you could you could tell the story of the game while you’re reading ads. That’s what I do. I always crack playing in tournament jokes when I read that RC Cola line about the world going soft. So, there you go. You know, participation trophies and all that [ __ ] Minutes coming right up. Say modest win ultra like the cold Chris taste of Michelob. What about What about your uh your crew over there at DLLS Mavs? Have they stepped up their ad reading game yet, Stein? No question. But like when you guys are doing it, I’m like taking notes while I’m waiting. While I’m in the waiting room, really, what all city should do is just hire Matt and Dave to read ads for every single show on the network. We’re available. Doesn’t come free. Don’t come free. Don’t come like the energy. Billy D would be jealous of the energy that is generated by YouTube. This is what he means when he says physicality. That’s right. That’s right. It man, we always enjoy chatting with you, buddy. Look forward to the next time. Bulls nation. If you want a little Western Conference NBA talk, checking in on what Cooper Flag and the Mavs are up to. Also, just great coverage across the league. Check out DLLS Mavs. And of course, subscribe to that Stein Line Substack. Some of the best NBA writing around. Stein, we appreciate you, buddy. Have a great night. We’ll talk to you the next time. Missed missed you guys. Be good. All right, Ste. You, too. That’s our guy, dude. We cool. How cool is that, bro? Legend. Oh, yeah. I was I was there the night. D Rob dropped 71 like Oh man. Hey, shout out to my man. I’m sorry, Joe, but shout out to my man who said, “I remember the Rock Auto days.” Oh, son. Shout out cut. That’s a That’s a deep cut, baby. That’s a That’s a long time listener right there. A minute, bro. Out. Shout out. I’m just I’m just thinking about now having you guys do ad reads of like, “Are you around in San Antonio this weekend from the 18th to the 21st?” Well, come on down. Ring ring. Come on down to Buddy Gity. I’ll give you a great deal. Plus free tickets to Friday night’s game. The Panthers are going to state, y’all. See this ring right here? You got to earn that, baby. This weekend, go to the Denver slopes and go to the ski lodge. Oh man. Listen, man. We will read it. You give give me to me, I will read it. You will read it and I will make it entertaining. And Matt will do the same, man. And shout out to y’all who have liked the ad reads from back in the day. Shout out. My man brought out Rock Auto. Shout out. Uh should we That was one of my better. Should we uh shout out some super chats as we’re coming up? Uh by the way, I did tell people in the chat if we got to 200 likes in $100 super chats tonight. Uh I’d ditch the goatee and bring the stash out cuz you know the good luck goatee is now dead with this loss tonight. But we are nowhere near it. Nowhere near it. Y’all don’t want it. He’s just talking. Maybe that means I I I keep this ugly thing on my face until we get the proper amount of super chat. What are we What are we at right now? What are we at right now? 834 likes. Nowhere near. Nowhere near. Nowhere near the Do we hit And you said $100 in super chats. Yeah. Uh which we also haven’t hit. Uh but shout out to Jaxo who said in the chat, uh super chat 10 bucks. Appreciate you. This was a needed loss and you have to get ready for the Sixers. Yeah. So the Bulls will come home and have a day tomorrow to recuperate and then Tuesday, you know, 5-1 Sixers, 5-1 Bulls, your home floor like that that is the biggest game of the season this very early in the season, but that that’s the game of the season right now. This is going to mean something, man. Uh well, it’ll be curious to see how they respond. And will IO be a part of that team responds? I believe that uh Billy said it’s daytoday, which is IO quad contusion as of right now. Knock on wood, the medical uh the injury report for tonight’s game had it listed as a quad contusion which you assume is better than a quad strain. Yeah. And even thinking about that game in Philly, I mean, you’re going to have tomorrow, then you’re going to have, you know, the game against Philly, but then you get two days off after that because of the backtoback that’s coming. And I’m sure he’s not going to play in the back to back if it’s going to be daytoday. We’ll see. I hope he does, but we’ll see. So, I I would plan, this is just my hope. I would plan on him, you know, testing it out and seeing if he can give it a go against Philly. Like you said, Matt, right, as of right now, this is the biggest game for the Chicago Bulls, man. This is see who will be number one in the East after this game. How wild and awesome is that to say? Pretty freaking wild. Also, shout out to I was just going to say the Bucks and the Cavs, the next two games that the Bulls are playing are right there, too. The Bucks are number three and the Cavs are number six. Four and three. So there you go. Yeah, these I’m really going to separate the men from the boys here. That’s real. Fat boy 123 with a 38 super chat. Appreciate you say giddy with four turnovers, 20% shooting from three. That’s enough ammo for PC to work with. Can’t wait for the PC ran. Keep up the good No, I I said Josh Giddy didn’t have his best game of the season tonight because of the poor uh shooting behind the arc and the turnovers, but still a very respectable game. Yeah, you know, the Bulls carried him came up against I thought it was one of his better games. Motivated and, you know, rolling on all cylinders Nick’s team tonight and Giddy was one of the Bulls who tried to keep him in it. So, credit to him. Measure man is when you’re down, baby. Yeah, that’s right. Uh Juan Guzman 976 with a $10 super chat. appreciate you, Juan. They need to get back to scoring in the paint, moving the ball, driving to the basket, fight for offensive rebounds, contesting the three-point shot, or in other words, do what they have been doing. So, the Bulls actually won points in the paint tonight, I believe, by a dozen. They did. Um, but driving to the basket and getting good penetration to ideally get good kickouts to three-point shooters and or free throw uh attempts was, I think, a little bit lacking tonight. Yeah. But still, the Bulls, you know, drive and kick, driving kick. It wasn’t as pretty tonight as it has been in some of these games. The ball movement wasn’t quite as sharp. Correct. They still, you know, 14 turnovers. Not terrible, not great. And they still knocked down 17 threes. They did. Um, it just so happened that Yeah, just so happened the Knicks knocked down 20. Also, uh, five for offensive rebounds. I think the Bulls got a dozen and the Knicks got 14. So, they really even defensive rebounding that I meant to say that in my initial thought about like the possession battle. The 14 offensive rebounds is way too many. They got to be better there. They got to clean that up. Uh, and our guy Jelly with a 1999 super chat. Appreciate you, Jelly. Say having a beard is natural when you think about it. Shaving it off is quite weird. Paul McCartney, get those likes and super chats. I’m back to get weird. Well, I guess it’s not to be tonight. Not going to get weird tonight. No, dude. I brought my razor. It’s been in my work bag. Oh, man. It’s been in my work bag for the past on set. Yeah. Oh, baby. I was, you know, trying to motivate the crew to have some fun even on a loss tonight. Yeah. Say, “Hey, let’s have some fun.” And when’s the next away game? Uh, I don’t know. But why do you want to be here for when that happen? Yeah, he was. He He wasn’t here last time. Oh, yeah. You weren’t here last time. No, I’m Cuz he had me shave one side. That’s true. That was half beard. That was diabolical. Yeah. uh are when they lost to the Bucks in game five of that short-lived playoff series in the early days of CHGO’s existence. You couldn’t wait. I was ready to be done with that stat. You and shout out to our old pal uh was it Joey Ba? Uh Clark and Dave took turns shaving mustache. Yeah, he was. Shout out Clark, bro. Hey, man. Yeah, absolutely. Uh so I don’t know. Maybe I’ll shave it when I get home tonight because I’m truly sick of this disgusting goatee on my face. Maybe I’ll keep it around. I don’t know. But it served its purpose for a fivegame win streak. Well, thank you Goate for your win streak. Any any parting thoughts about tonight’s game or thoughts about what you want to see the Bulls uh you know turn turn around on Wednesday, gentlemen. Oh, man. Tuesday rather. I thought today was Monday. I I think I mean what I learned was like I you know it’s gonna happen. You’re gonna catch that L. That’s fine. I kind of like the way they lost to be real with you. like it didn’t feel like the wheels came flying off, you know, for the team. It felt like a NBA loss, if that makes any sense. But like, oh man, no, we lost to a team who was hot, who, you know, didn’t miss from the free throw line, whose best player was being their best player. You know, he’s scoring 30. Like, they had to get up for the Chicago Bulls. And I don’t think early on in the year, I don’t think some of these teams were getting up for the Chicago Bulls. And the Knicks after that ass whooping they took at the UC, they were like, “Oh, no.” You know what I mean? Like you No, we ready. We want to play y’all. And for me, that’s saying something because the rest of the league is going to be looking at stuff like that like, “Oh man, we can’t go kick it out the night before like we used to in Chicago. We might have to get some sleep, you know, before we play this team.” So, I liked it. And the fact that we were still missing some pieces and still gave them a good run, you know, we still really gave the Knicks a good run. I like that aspect of it. And the fact that they’re playing meaningful games, man, even this early in the year, they’re playing a meaningful game on Tuesday, that’s exciting to me. Um, to me, I feel like outside of maybe a run in the second quarter with Jaylen Smith, uh, who we didn’t mention tonight, but had a really hot stretch there in the second quarter for real. To me, that was like really the only time in this game that it really felt like watching the Bulls this year. Um, not that not to say that they like played poorly. It just didn’t really feel like they really tapped into their peak of what they can do and what they have been doing, right? And yet still they shot 48% from the field, 42 and a half% on threes. Um, they just didn’t get to the line enough. They, you know, and they didn’t defend well enough. Yeah. Um, but my point with that is saying that I think they didn’t even play that well tonight and they only lost by 10 or 12 to a team that went absolutely bananas from three. So, like I think to answer one of the questions that you had about to to Mark, like I do think that they’re going to continue to be competitive. I I don’t think that this brand of basketball is going anywhere. They may not win every game. They may run into really hot shooting nights from time to time um or, you know, regularly, but that happens and you just have to find a way. And and I think that they’ll be even better than this. And this didn’t even feel like it was their best basketball. Agree. 100% agree, sir. Yeah. The Bulls can play better than they did tonight and the Knicks just took it to him tonight. It happens. Uh you play 82 games, they’re not all going to be perfect and they’re not all going to be wins. Yeah. But hey, 81 and one still in the picture that earlier 75 wins. Yeah, that’s right. Uh all right, we’ll get out of here for tonight. Just another reminder uh to check out Stein stuff, the Stein Line Substack. Subscribe to it. It’s great. 1. The referees cheated the HELL OUT of the Bulls! They hated on our record seemingly. The calls were so one-sided it was sickening. The Knicks were able to push off practically every single time, and the Refs allowed it. They were even bad in Chicago at the United Center. I was there! But it was worse in New York. They must have money on the Knicks or something! This is what peeves me about the NBA!

  2. Mike, you must be blind if you couldn't see the blatant one-sidedness in this game. Stop acting like the Refs weren't the X factor of this game. It was obvious as hell!

  3. I think they need a rebounding coach, from what I’ve seen they don’t even try to establish a position to rebounds. and their opponents beat them to it. Allowed to many offensive rebounding chances for New York, and here’s the thing the whole 3 is better then 2 thing, if you miss your shot you have nada, nilch and you are nowhere in a position to catch a rebound, if you’re all camped out on the three point line.

  4. If Ayo Disumo was out that could have to do with a upcoming trade with Johnathen Kominga and if it does, they need to act on it fast, because 5 and 1, becomes 5 and 2 or 3 real fast. And before you know it it’s the same Bulls team that we have for years.

  5. Why was this guy Marc Stien talking about no all-stars when Giddey is basically averaging a triple double. I love how he talks up Vuc from this game as a chance and not even give Giddey a like. What’s he been sitting round drinking with Matt??!!

  6. Ayo's absence hurt us badly – his efficiency is crucial to the attack. Bulls worked hard to stay in the game but sloppy defence and too many turnovers from the starting 5 made it hard to stay in the game. LEARN from it and move on ….. but there's also the question of the reffing in front of a parochial MSG pro-Knicks crowd. BAD news if we're without Coby, Ayo & Z. Collins for an extended period. Bulls don't have the depth to cover those absences.

  7. We definitely need Coby, because injuries are unpredictable; surely, he's out for now, but when he comes back, we can't be sure who will be injured in the future.
