“We’ve Seen This With Baker Mayfield”: Cam Newton Cites Three Examples While Praising Mac Jones’ Rise with 49ers

I think certain QBs need certain situations to thrive. Baker honestly wasn’t even that bad with the Browns till he played with a broken shoulder or whatever.
Browns and the Jets are places where QBs tend to flounder no matter what. They’re bad orgs with bad FOs and coaches for the most part.
It’s weird that they failed to mention that Darnold thrived last year in Minnesota as well. I think Darnolds stay here and Minnesota clearly allowed him to thrive and regain his confidence.
Jones (both Mac and Daniel) similarly went from awful spots, and Daniel not only played for KoC last year obviously went to a great spot. Jones went to a great spot too with Shanahan, CMC and Kittle—he’s honestly still missing a few of his top weapons and still succeeding.
For most QBs other than the goats, situation matters a ton. Even for the goats, Rodgers has looked rejuvenated in Pittsburgh versus the jets.
Patience is big with most QBs. Most QBs don’t thrive when thrown into literal hell which is what most high pick QBs end up in. It’s not a surprise that most of the best QBs in the nfl went to near ideal spots like the chiefs or the ravens and weren’t the highest picked qb.
Getting that second year of Mac Jones was a great idea. Whoever thought of that. Good on ya.
let’s slow the brakes on Mac Jones. He’s a good backup, and we’re some winning games, but most of these games are way too close for comfort
Everyone poked fun at Purdy calling him a “checkdown” or “McCaffrey” merchant when he was literally the most aggressive qb and pushed the ball deep the most in the league and Mac Jones IS a checkdown merchant and being praised. All bc he was a first round pick.
Cam Newton is a moron who spouts hottakes and preeches his “opinion” like gospel to get attention and for clicks.
He’s a known Purdy hater so I’m not surprised he is dick riding Jones
Nothing Cam Newton says will ever have an effect on me after that Super Bowl fumble 🤷♂️. I know others feel the same
The league is in a cool moment right now as we get to se the resurgence of several highly drafted QB’s who through no fault of their own end up on poorly run organizations. The fact is it is extremely difficult to succeed in the NFL as a highly drafted QB because let’s face it, you are going to likely be selected by an awful team. Also, getting the proper coaching is paramount in the NFL as the game leaves no room for error or hesitation from a lack of understanding anything.
One thing I’ve heard Mac Jones say a couple times already is that he is very happy with his decisiveness to let it rip this year. What that tells me is that he lacked confidence from years past and understanding of what he is seeing. Thats is 100% coaching, which he has not had since year 1 with Josh McDaniels. Look at Darnold how he said he learned to prepare and how to see the field and again mentioned how to be decisive, again he actually got great coaching of the game. Baker after less than a week with Mcvay was already more confident. Daniel Jones looks like a completely different player.
My hope is that after Mac leaves for his new job, Justin Fields ends up behind Purdy. I think Justin can do it, but he needs coaching and to learn how to properly prepare. Kyle and Brock can help QB’s speed up, its proven at this point.
Lance just didn’t get the chance he needed because of win now and injuries, plus I believe he needed more work then the others due to his limited play time in college.
Mac has done all of this without Aiyuk and Pearsall in most of his starts and only recently got back Kittle. OL is bad as usual but it’s worse this year imo.
Problem is so many 49ers fans at this point are blind to praising any QB outside of Purdy. The concern with Mac is he regresses like Brock and Jimmy both did after initial success, but both of those guys had way better situations than Mac. I’d argue Mac is underrated at this point, seems like he has been his entire football career tbh.
Definitely a Mac fan but obviously he is benefiting from 49rs system. I don’t really care if a QB dinks & dunks down the field. It’s about playing winning football being a leader and good teammate. I am not sure Mac will succeed for just any team but probably true of most players
With that said when Purdy comes back I expect to see superman no excuses about OL or WR. I remember Brocks playoff year but after that I don’t recall watching much. I personally don’t believe all the hype on him in this sub so I eagerly await him playing in a game. No excuses
The QB comparison is not fair one is a throw away from other teams and one in franchise QB. I expect a HUGE difference between the two
We should get a very good return in a trade after this season. Obviously nothing crazy, but for a backup QB it should be a great return.
You lost me at Cam Newton. Guy criticizes everyone while he was just an above average, athletic quarterback.
So what makes him a non “system” QB as opposed to Purdy?
