The five and four Carolina Panthers welcome in the one and eight New Orleans Saints. The Bank America Stadium on Sunday afternoon in a game where I feel like the Panthers simply need to take care of business. You look back a couple weeks ago against Miami, 17 nothing deficit. The Dolphins are terrible. Now, Carolina came back and won that game. And looking at the total yardage, very clearly the Panthers were the better team. They just had some poor turnovers there that allowed the Dolphins to get that cushion that they could not hold on to. You can’t have another one of those games on Sunday. And same thing looking at the Jets game a couple weeks ago. The Jets are also awful, but the Panthers just really fumbled and stumbled their way through that game. Of course, they won it. Jason Horn’s like, “I’m not losing to the Jets this year, guys. Let’s not make this a thing.” And they held on to win. But two not really convincing performances against two of the worst teams in the NFL. I do not want to see that on Sunday against the Saints, starting Tyler Shuck, the rookie, a 26-year-old damn rookie, his second career start. This is a game where Carolina needs to put together a total performance offensively, defensively, and on special teams. We’ll see if they can do that. at the injury report. It is out and looking at it heading into week 10. The Panthers are looking pretty healthy, especially considering all that they’ve been through. We’ll talk about that momentarily, but let’s start up this Friday show as we start off every single Friday throughout the regular season here on Lockdown Panthers. And that’s by me giving you my three keys victory ahead of Sunday’s game against the Saints. Key number one, I’m guessing there were a few of you that were concerned on Wednesday when the injury report came out and that Rico Data was on it and that he did not practice with the quad injury. And I’m guessing you were still a little bit concerned on Thursday when he still was limited out there on practice with the quad injury. But here on Friday, he was a full participant, no injury designation, and Rico is good to go for Sunday. And my guess is if he indeed’s going to be the offense, and we’ll get to the passing game momentarily, if he’s going to have this big of a role in determining whether the Panthers have success offensively and they’re in win games on Sunday and eventually Monday, maybe a Saturday later on this year, we’ll find out. Uh he’s going to need to probably be monitored the rest of the season to where you don’t need to practice on Wednesday. They’re not in pads anyways. Thursday, have them limited. Friday when you got everything going on with the walkth through, full participant, all of that. If that is going to be the cadence the rest of the year, I’m good with that. But you have to make sure he is good to go. Is ready to get 25 plus touches every single week moving forward. And the by-week, which is still a couple weeks away, really will be perfectly timed considering what they have after that to end off the season. But obviously key number one is to ride Rico. That’s what gotten you to this point in time. That’s why you came back and beat Miami. That’s why you beat Dallas. That’s why you won last week in Green Bay, combined with a really good defensive performance against a Packers offense that was humming the week prior in their Sunday Night Football win against the Steelers. You’ve heard all the numbers throughout the week that I’ve given you. Rico since week five when he started against Miami is leading the NFL in rushing. Go back to week one of the season. He’s third overall in rushing yards. When you look at running backs with a 100 plus carries in the NFL this season, he is second in the NFL in EPA per rush only behind Jonathan Taylor. He’s fourth in yards after contact among that group. Second explosive rush percentage, that’s runs 12 plus yards. He’s fourth in rushing successful play rate. And he’s third in successful play percentage on run plays. He has been one of the best backs in the NFL. And he so far has made 3.25 25 million dollars and that’s a half a million dollars that he picked up based off of incentives and I’m guessing on Sunday he’s gonna earn another half a million dollars once he has yet another 100 plus performance on the ground and of course catching the ball out of the back field as well. So Rod Rico that’s what’s gotten you to this point at five and four and why this team is thickly in the hunt when it comes to the playoffs here in 2025. Number two, if the Panthers are going to actually be a playoff team this season. We can talk more about the Pword later on, but they’re really going to be a team that’s going to actually be there in January playing on wild card weekend. And hell, maybe they went out then they won’t be playing on wild card weekend. They could be the number one seed. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Obviously, they’re going to need Bryce Show to be so much better than he’s been. And yes, Bryce last Sunday made the throws McMillan and a Coker. Then really great job disguising what they were doing offensively, giving Rico Dattle some pass protections that weren’t real. And then great job by the offensive line opening up that hole. Rico gets 19 yards. That sets him up for the game-winning field goal. So Bryce has been key in these wins against Miami. Even when he made the bad mistakes, he made huge plays for them to win that game. Dallas, I think one of his best performances of the season may be the best. He was really good in that game as well. when games have been on the line in the fourth quarter going back to when he’s gotten to the league. Nine game-winning drives that is tied with Patrick Mahomes, Gino Smith, and Jaylen Herz. Let’s throw out Gino and let’s throw out Pat. Can you be Jaylen Herz, who I know pisses off his receivers every single week, but you can get some level consistency that that’s what you want to see throughout the game and not just in the fourth quarter. And if they’re truly gonna be one of those 14 teams at the end of the day in January, they have to get their passing game in order. And that is key number two. Right now, there are 17 teams in the NFL that have a winning record. Those are the 17 teams that are in the hunt heading into week 10 here of the season for the playoffs. Of those 17 primary starting quarterbacks, we’re counting M. Jones since Brock Party’s been banged up. the 17 primary starters on those teams. This is where Bryce Young is ranking as of this moment. He is 16th in passer rating, only ahead of Trevor Lawrence, who really has not played well in Jacksonville this season. He is last in EPA per drop back, last in EPA per play, last explosive pass percentage. That’s passes 16 plus yards. That’s last in passing yards, last in yards per attempt. And it is 12th. I was trying to find what’s even maybe a middle of the road successful category. He is 12th in successful play percentage on offense. So, he has been possibly the worst of the starting quarterbacks of these 17 winning teams right now in the NFL that are in play for a playoff spot this season. And I don’t necessarily think he has been, but the production has been at the bottom when looking at all these guys. And I don’t think with Tampa remaining on the schedule twice, Seattle on the schedule, San Francisco and LA, I don’t think that they can continue to get by with that. 102 passing yards last week. It worked. 83 heading into that final drive. Okay, it worked against Green Bay, but the Packers, they didn’t have a problem getting into the red zone. They had a problem finishing drives. And had they finished those drives, that would not have been enough from Bryce to win that game. But it was and that’s what the most important thing is. But we have to understand that moving forward, they have to get so much more out of him and out of the passing game overall. And you look at the Saints, this is a chance to start building some positive momentum heading into the final nine games of the season or the final eight games of the season rather. The Saints are allowing opponents to have the fourth highest passer rating in the NFL so far this season. They’re 27th in defensive total pass EPA. They’re 24th in defensive pass success rate. This is not a good secondary and passing defense. And you look at the receivers the last two weeks. Xavier Leette and Jaylen Coker have seven receptions for 78 yards. Tedo McMillan has 11 receptions for 145 yards past two weeks. So he at least is getting production and is doing what he needs to do. But you got to get Excel and Jaylen going out there and making some plays. Brad Exit, the Panthers OZ talked about this on Thursday trying to get Jaylen Coker more involved. If you can get all three of that those guys going, then you can have something in the pass game. But it all starts there with number nine. You’re getting good pass protection, you have your receivers back healthy, you have to do your 111th, something that Dave Canals talks all the time about and go out there and elevate what this offense has been so far, which has been Rico D carry us home, baby. So that’s what they need to do. They want to fulfill all the dreams that you all have had this week after beating Green Bay. They must get their passing game in order. And what a better week to do it than right now against this terrible Saints team. And then number three, Tyler Shock making his second career start. Both of them now on the road. Wasn’t really great last week in New Orleans. Had 15 to 24 passing, 176 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. He’s a rookie, a 26-y old rookie, mind you. And a guy who I mean, he had all the injuries in college. I get it. Come on, we really buying Tyler Shuck as a starting quarterback in the NFL, like a highlevel kind of player. I’m not going to do that. So, number three, force Tyler Shuck to make mistakes. The Panthers so far this season are 3 and 0 when winning the turnover battle. The Panthers have 13 turnovers, while the Saints have 14. So, both these teams have been turnoverrone. They’re ranked 28th and 29th, respectively in turnover EPA per game. But the Saints cannot really protect and they just got rid of or traded away Trevor Penning who really struggled for them. The former firstrounder out of Northern Iowa who’s playing guard for them. They’re last in ESPN’s pass block win rate. Now the Panthers, they have not been great getting at the passer. They’re 28th in ESPN’s pass rush win rate. The Saints have faced the seventh lowest percent of blitzes per drop back in the NFL this season. So people are getting home with four and not needing to send a lot of blitzes. is the Rams only blitz 8% of the times last week. Now, it was 25 dropbacks, so it wasn’t like they had a ton of opportunities to go out there and to blitz them, which was by far the lowest from LA this season. Uh so maybe the Panthers, who are right now 19th in the NFL in blitz percentage according to True Media, maybe they just sit back and play coverage and try to wait for Tyler Shock to make a mistake and get some takeaways like they did last week with Jordan Love’s poor interception. Uh then the the fumble that they got there. That was a play made by Roseboom, win a turnover battle, you get that, you’re three and 0 already, you’d be four and0. So force Tyler Shuck to make mistakes. Uh get your passing game in order and ride Rico D to yet another W. Those are my three keys to victory. Rico is good to go. What about the offensive line and an outside linebacker who missed last week? We’ll talk about that here in just a moment on Locked On Panthers. Taking a look at the week 10 injury report as Panthers face off against the Saints on Sunday at home inside Bank of America Stadium looking to get to six and four and not show that last week was a fluke cuz it wasn’t a fluke that was a really good win for this team. But to show that, hey, we are serious this season. They’ve done that so far by beating Miami and by beating the Jets. Do it again. in after the bye-week in a couple weeks do it again down there New Orleans and beat one of the worst teams in the NFL and pick up four which should have been but it’s the NFL easy win. And so looking at the injury report, Rico D was on it throughout the week. He did not practice on Wednesday with the quad. Was limited on Thursday with the quad. Then on Friday, full participant, no injury designation for Rico Dowel for this game on Sunday. Derek Brown having deal with an elbow. He also is good to go. No injury designation for him. Damen Lewis has an oblique. He is good to go. No injury designation. Cade Mazize, he is back this week. Delvin ankle and knee that he suffered in the loss against Buffalo did not play last week. He is good to go as well. No injury designation. And that means that the Panthers will have Iky Auanu at left tackle, Damen Lewis at left guard, Cade May starting again at center. us and Corbett will get the nod at right guard and then Taylor Motton who’s been off the injury report all week long after being active last week but did not play due to a knee injury that was suffered in that same loss where Maize and Christensen a lot of guys went down in that game. He did not play. Yash Nying got to start last week and actually gr I add and we brought that up on Monday or on Tuesday rather uh when looking back at the good, the bad, and the ugly which we do every single week following those games on Tuesday. So stay tuned for that next week after this game when it’s I’m expecting to talk about a lot of good um hopefully no bad and certainly nothing ugly about beating the Saints if that is what happens of course on Sunday. Uh so you’re looking now at your eighth starting combination in 10 weeks, but it involves five guys who you would feel comfortable starting any week of the year. I I know that Maize just settled it in there at center. That’s where Corbett was to start off the season. He was a right guard for Carolina prior to last year when they moved in the center after they signed Robert Hunt and Damen Lewis. So, I think he may be better off at right guard for the time being. You look at the depth chart on Panthers.com, it’s always unofficial. They have Chandler Zavala who is out this week with an elbow. They have him listed as a starter there and behind him is Jay Kurhan who will be active on Sunday. I’m expecting that be Josh Diamond, Jay Kurhan, and Nick Sac. Those would be the guys. The other three uh offensive linemen who are not injured aside from of course Kade Chanley Zalo. Those are the four guys Nyman, Kurhan, Seamac, and Zavala. The four guys behind those starters that are the active offensive linemen. I’m guessing they’ll carry those three. Nimon, Kurhan, and Seamac on Sunday in this game. Prince Ellen missed last week with an ankle. He’s been good all week on the injury report. He has no injury designation and even looking at it, he was full on Thursday and full on Wednesday. So that was clearly pointing towards him playing on Sunday. Uh Ransom, he’s good. He had an illness and mispractice a couple of days ago. Bryson Tummaine, he’s been dealing with a hip. He is listed as questionable. He did not practice on Thursday. Uh did not have any sort of issue on Wednesday. So I’m guessing he’ll probably be fine. And if not, that would give an opportunity for uh our old friend Hunter Infro, who’s still our new friend, but I would give him an opportunity to play. I’m guessing that Bryson being full today, uh he’ll be good to go on Sunday. And then lastly, looking at it, Terrell McMillan, he is up there with a hamstring. He was limited on Friday and is listed as questionable. And that is something that seems to have just popped up later on this week as he was not on Nature Report on Wednesday or on Thursday. That’s where things stand heading into this week 10 matchup against the Saints where the Panthers simply need to take care of business. I’ll give you one final word heading into this game on Sunday here in just a moment on Locked on Panthers. This episode is brought to you by Prize Pix. The five and4 Carolina Panthers are welcoming in the 1 and8 New Orleans Saints, which means this is a game the Panthers should not lose and really cannot afford to lose if they want to achieve all the dreams that everyone in Panthers Nation has been dreaming of, thinking up since that win last week when Ryan Fitzgerald put it right between the goalpost there at Lambeau Field to get Carolina to five and four and be in a spot with New Orleans this week and Atlanta next week to where they could really be in a great position heading into the final month of the season and hopefully back in the playoffs for the first time since 2017. So simply, they need to take care of business. And you look at the performances so far this season against teams of the Saints class, which is the basement of the NFL where Carolina used to be. And I was chuckling last yesterday yesterday on the show uh last show, but yesterday on the show when Ross Jackson of locked on Saints was talking about how the Panthers are somebody the Saints need to look at as you looked at Carolina a couple years ago, two and 15, first two and 15 team in the history of the NFL. Last year, take a step forward and get to five and 12. this year. They’ve already won five games and certainly if they get to at least eight, you feel good about where they are headed heading into next year as well. There’s still some questions on the roster and what needs to be done after the season, but those are February conversations. We are focused in on the Saints in the final seven games after that and what can still be achieved here in 2025. But you cannot put yourself in another position like it did against Miami who is awful. like Mike McDaniel’s getting fired. Tuang Maloa is also basically getting fired after this season. It’s going to be a brand new coach and quarterback and GM down there in Miami after this season. And you were down 17 nothing against that team. That cannot happen. There cannot be some little hiccup early in the game. And if you do have a turnover, they have shown their resiliency. That’s been a part of the DNA, the identity and culture that they’re building here under Dave Canal over the last year and a half. But that’s unacceptable to ever be in a spot against a team of Miami’s position and a team of where New Orleans is at so far this season. And then you even look at the Jets game. They did not play a good football game offensively. Defensively, they were great. Now, the Jets are completely inept. They were trying to bench Justin Fields after that game. The Tyron Taylor is injured. I don’t know what the situation is right now in New York, but that’s a bad football team. and you hung with them or really let them hang with you until the fourth quarter for whatever reason. Like that’s not what needs to play out on Sunday. It is time for this team for the first time all year to put together a complete performance. And you could say to me, oh, was last week not a complete performance? No, there’s a turnover there. Passing game wasn’t really great. I know the wind and all that, but no, I wouldn’t say that wasn’t even the 30 to nothing win against Atlanta. If we’re really being honest with ourselves, special teams, they won that in a major way that game. Defensively, they shut him out. So, obviously, they played well defensively. Michael Pennix Jr. was awful in that game in large part because of what Carolina was able to do. But the offense was not good, guys. They did enough to win that game. And hell, they didn’t need to score at all because the defense had to pick six, but the offense was bad in that game. So even when you win 30 to nothing, there were still things to nitpick and we certainly have picked at them over the last couple of weeks when looking back at that game and then didn’t want to spend too much time on it in the moment, but looking back at how they performing against some of these lower teams like that’s another one of those games where man, you really should have poured on more offensively. So I want to see this against a Saints team that is bad. I want to see Carolina go out there and have a complete performance for the first time all season long. You can disagree with me if you like. if you think Atlanta was because I I know it’s hard to say that a 30 nothing win wasn’t that but the offense really wasn’t good. They were good enough on that day. Um but man, I just want to see them dominate another team, especially a team that’s this bad because they didn’t do that against the Jets and they did not do that against the Dolphins either. And if they’re able to take care of business, which I think they will, and it’s not just this week, it’s next week as well against Atlanta. If you’re sitting at seven and four, there’s no way anybody in the NFL cannot take you seriously as a legitimate playoff contender. You would still have another game against New Orleans. There would be two games there against NFC West opponents in the Rams and in the 49ers and then three other games after that against Tampa twice and then Seattle. You would need to split those three games. And I’m guessing New Orleans probably going to be a win. So then you need two wins against either Tampa. One, both of them. One of them, Seattle, the Rams, or the Ners. That puts you in prime position. You win this game this week, you win next week. That’s basically eight and four. Eight and four. You need two wins out of the final five games to be a playoff team. I I can’t believe that we’re sitting here realistically looking at it and saying, “Man, this is a team that is firmly in position to take it, but be big boys and go win the game on Sunday.” And then in Atlanta, I don’t know what Falcons team’s going to show up. I’m never going to guarantee anything when it comes to playing down there in that building where it’s going to be largely empty, of course, but still it’s a house of horrors. Whether it’s been at Georgia Dome, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, I don’t know what’s going to happen in that game next week, but you won 30 to nothing and you should feel pretty good about your ability not to do that again, but to win that game next Sunday down there in Atlanta. So, here they are. And even if somehow they lose after beating the Saints and if they beat the Falcons, if they lose back-to-back games against San Francisco on Monday night and then I mean, can you imagine that you’re facing off against San Francisco on Monday night? Is I forget is that before or is it after the game against the Rams? I think it’s Let’s see. Let me look at this real quick because I know someone I know one of you are yelling at me, you know. Yeah, it’s before. Imagine being seven and four, y’all. seven and four going on Monday Night Football against San Francisco. Can you can you imagine that? Like I want to see this for this organization and for everybody who’s a fan of this team. Like I want that to be the scenario. It all starts on Sunday. It’s a week- toeek league. So certainly they could go out there lay an egg or they could win big and then they got to start all over again. It’s Atlanta and all that. I I totally understand that. That’s something that I I bring up all the time on the show. Can never get too high, can never get too low. Man, that win against Green Bay really opened up a lot of possibilities. And just looking at two games remaining with New Orleans and a game against Atlanta, a team you already blew out, you got to feel really good about where this team is at and their ability after beating Green Bay to where they could beat any of the teams remaining on their schedule and they could finally knock down that door and get back to the playoffs, get back to January football, like real not the first weekend of January, but like the second weekend of January football for the first time since 2017. So, we’ll say they can do it, but a big big opportunity on Sunday. Just simply take care of business. Do not play with your food. Quoting Julian Edelman yet again. Uh, and go out there and get a convincing win and let everybody in the NFL know. This is six and four football team that’s got everything ahead of them and they should be looked at as a legitimate contender for a wild card and maybe even a division here in the NFC this season.
