Looks Like Tampa Bay Was Right.. #nhl #hockey #nashvillepredators

This has to be one of the most polarizing decisions turned perfect for a franchise that I have ever seen in the NHL. And let me explain. 2024 was the year for free agency in Nashville. They swung big acquiring players like Brady Sheay, Jonathan Marcho, and of course the biggest headliner, Steven Stamco. The PR signed Stammer to a 4-year $32 million contract to help add some additional scoring to their otherwise overachieving roster from the 2023 24 season. Unfortunately though, since he signed that deal with Nashville, the regression that Tampa Bay had predicted has basically come true. Last season, he had half the points he had in his final year with Tampa. And this year, he’s only on pace to have less than 30 points. That is huge from the point per game player he was just two years ago. While it may not have been the most loyal move not signing a franchise legend and your team’s captain, I think we all can agree that if you take emotion out of it, the Tampa Bay Lightning, they were right.

  1. The more I look at it the $3*8yr deal was kind of bang on. Man would have kept playing on a line with Kucherov. All he had to do was shoot the puck and he’d have 40 goals a season.

  2. He didn't have "half the points" he had his final year in Tampa. 81 to 53 isnt half. He was also plsying with less skilled line mates. He's absolutely regressing cuz father time is undefeated, but it wasn't THAT bad last season.

  3. But…. Steven was "disrespected" by Tampa. Father time always wins. Just because we don't think it's "fair" doesn't mean it's not reality. Hope this is a lesson for other guys. Tavares made the best decision for himself and didn't yell and scream and pout and whine.

  4. The best thing for him now would be to get out of Nashville and get traded to a contending team. The rumors have been flying for days. A change of scenery would do wonders for him.

  5. Advanced stats do prove that Tampa had a good reason to foresee this. On his last Tampa year Stamkos had almost half of his points come from PP while being going -21 on the year, and that's with a deeper Top 6.

  6. One can only hope we trade him to Vancouver. Hell, retain 50% salary. Just get him off the team and get younger guys like Kemell, L’Heureux, etc. a chance to actually settle in the NHL. What the preds are doing is essentially vastly multiplying the odds of their biggest prospects becoming journeymen. When a player bounces between leagues, he can’t develop.

  7. I think Stamer is dying inside. To be the captain of a Stanley cup winning team and then have them not resign you has to penetrate your armor of confidence. Look what JT did to the islanders. That is as low as you can get when a player lies to his fans, ownership and teammates. The Islanders couldn’t get over the hump all because of this one mistake. At the time, the islanders could have gotten a haul for an 84 point young JT and I have no doubt the islanders would have won back to back Stanley Cups. I feel like stammer got the reverse treatment when a team does it to a player. Does anyone think he’s happy in Nashville? To move everything including your confidence has to be very hard. In JT’s case he could have moved to another team for 17 games and then signed his $11 million contract after the season. this would’ve allowed the Islanders to capitalize on the trade and would have won at least one Stanley Cup.

  8. I don't know if the issue is Marchessault or Stamkos or O'Reilly individually but I remember a commentator saying before last season began that he thought those three could not really work together because they basically did the same job in their respective team. Boy was he right!

  9. this is why teams have analytics departments. Every model i looked at had stamkos regressing heavily even before he was traded. His 5 on 5 play especially was trending downwards

  10. Stamkos has been my favourite player throughout his career. He was the only reason I didn't cheer against Tampa, and then he goes to fricken Nashville! I gotta say i'm happy it wasn't the Bruins, Kings, Panthers or Alberta, but now that the Panthers suck I haven't seen him play in over a season, sadly.
