INSTANT REACTION – Bruins Take Down Sabres in 3-1 Win

[Applause] And welcome to Bruins overtime live presented by bytoyota.com with Billy and Barry. I’m Sophia. 30 and0 on the season. 31 the final, but it was a close one, guys, against the Buffalo Sabres, especially at the end there, holding our breath. Yes, that almost became the first unbutton the tie moment of this young season. I never doubted it, just so you know. Oh, please. Oh, I did not. Oh my goodness gracious. I’m glad you didn’t because I knew it. The person to my left and the person behind the screen, so to speak, producer Sean. Well, you know how it is when you have that many opportunities in an empty net. You don’t do it. I know. It just usually goes the other way. I know. But guess what? I’m a lucky charm over here, so I knew it. I knew it was going to be okay. Self-described. All right, guys. Let’s take a look. No, honestly, it was a little tight. And the garden was up, too, on their feet. Oh, yeah. You could you could feel the nervousness in the building. When you have this many chances, Billy, when the goalie is being pulled, it’s like, okay, now I’m going to get it. You’re going to end up putting it away right here. And it’s like, oh no, you don’t get an opportunity. No. Well, then you get No, that one. And that’s just the bounce over the stick that happens. All right, now you’re going to get pressured again. You’re right. Now you get another chance. You’re going to get it out and oh no, you don’t connect. And then P is going to try and heal it towards the net. And it goes wide. And everybody, self included, is saying, “Holy, are you kidding me that you’re no way and you know what you’re waiting for? You’re waiting for this shot right here to deflect off of somebody to go into the net.” That’s the kind of goal that you’re expecting cuz Buffalo already their first goal only goal was off the deflection. Their only goal of the season. You’re right. So it’s Listen, the Bruins eventually and then here with a really nice play coming back. Place went crazy on that one. They couldn’t believe it. But they held on. I I I mean it when it was all said and done, they actually the old bend not break. And that was a big kill right there. And then right here, I love the fact that Marco Sturm and his staff put out Castlick and Corali along with Lindol. I do. 11 seconds remaining. Chases it down after winning the face off. Yeah. And Carelli, watch right here. Watch what he does when he gets up to Lyn. Hey, he goes, “Sorry. Sorry, man.” Because they play the empty. And the important thing too with Billy was you were mentioned the guys they put up front there with Castle. They got basically have three centers out there, right? Yeah. I mean, you got in case one guy gets thrown out. And Sophie, I like to give a special shout out, too, to the penalty killers. You know, I mean, you started that third period. You got uh what is it? Two nothing. You got 46 seconds to start the period. Pasta’s in the box. And then they score one and then Makavoy goes in. And boy, that was a big big kill. So far, the penalty killers 12 for 12. They did a great job this evening. Yeah, I’m definitely I’m sure we’re going to take a closer look at that. But first, we want to focus on a bit of offense. Barry and Billy Pavl Zaka getting on the board for his first of the season. Great shot, too. And this is when the Bruins were getting it in, getting on the forche and then making something happen. First guy for check. Second guy gets the puck back little to high and then you’re going to recycle again. Arvitz. I thought he had a real good game. Pushes it back to peak. And then right here, Zaka is going to see that there’s a open ice to get to from who? Great play. Jordan Harris coming down the wall. He played a solid game today, Jordan Harris. Oh yeah, we’ll get to that. He he was very he was very good. But what we loved about the play was his step, but also the step out by Zaka. It looks like so obvious, but as you said during the first submission, we talked about it’s a it’s a lesson. Don’t just watch the puck. Find open ice. Yeah. And then find open ice and and make sure you get uh Harris’s attention by slapping your stick on the ice and say, “I’m ready. Give it to me.” And he got it. And what a great release. And a great start for Pavo Zach as well with three points in three games. So, we saw that goal, two assists in the other games, and a plus one rating. Two of those power play points, guys. And that’s very important as we definitely continue to focus on the power play this season. Okay, Mark Castillic, guys. Uh, also getting on the board here. Yeah, and as Razer had said, you know, Lion seems to have trouble with these long shots he was talking about. The Bruins got a good break here of, hey, you got it deep, you started to win some battles and you’re getting it along the wall. And right here it looks like Buffalo’s in good position. Makaoy makes a really good pinch and all of a sudden Castelik just turns around and get a nice little deflection off Timonss and uh Castelik was another solid player today. I thought he was great. I know lower ice time than some others, but I thought he was excellent every time he was out there. Yeah, he throws it. He slings it to the net is what he does, but it’s a great recite or reload by him as he covers for the right point coming in. And then give Corali credit too by him getting the front. That brings the defender Timonss to that area. And it goes in fortuitously. And it is now time to look at our Subaru star of the game brought to you by Subaru of New England. Mark Castelic is that Subaru star so far this season. Two points in three games for him as well. Five hits and four block shots. Yes, Billy. Oh, go ahead. Sorry. I was And what it wasn’t just about his goal and assist in this game. We saw him at the end out there. Just important out there. We saw him the remember that penalty kill a couple times. He had great stick work. Um and and his willingness to do anything, whatever it takes. And guess what? He is actually standing by with Razer for the postgame interview. Mark, another really solid performance from you guys right from the start. You took it to Buffalo in the first period. Um Pavl Zako was in here after the first and talked about all four lines rolling each other over. Is that the way you guys saw you saw it as well? Yeah, I saw it the same way. I think uh we got right to our emmo at the start just firing pucks on the net and uh we were hard to contain in their own end. So I think uh that’s the recipe for us right off the hop and uh it’s easy to play four lines that way and uh I think Pat’s right. You just mentioned throwing pucks on net. You did that and got your first of the season. Nice to get that out of the way and and it ends up being the game winner as well. Yeah, it’s always a good feeling, I think, to get one early just for the confidence and um but whether that went in or not, I think just the team and our line played just a solid overall game together and something we can build on for sure. It’s a special teams league and you’re a huge part of the PK. You did an unbelievable job drawing a penalty while short-handed, knocking a couple pucks down, taking it to the net. Just talk about the special teams over the first three games, especially the PK. I mean, they’ve been great. uh right from the goalies out. I think Sway and Corpy have played unbelievable for us and making some timely saves on the PK for sure. Um and I think um once again everybody’s on the same page and um it’s easy to play that way and uh we’re just on our toes and we’re aggressive so it’s been a fun style. Yeah, absolutely. Great start, fun start. Have fun tonight. Thank you. Yep. Absolutely. Great start for the Boston Bruins and for Jeremy Swayman as well this season. two wins in two starts. Uh 21 saves on 22 shots tonight. And guys, this is important. Yes, fewer than he had to make last time, but ask any goalie, it’s hard when you only face two shots in a period to kind of stay in it, right? Yeah. Cuz Lion obviously played very well for Buffalo. We showed that goal of Castle from got deflection off Pman’s back, but Lions gave his team a chance early on. And then as Buffalo started to get a little more energy, Jeremy Swayman was there. I thought you did a really good job, Billy, of kind of controlling the rebounds, but I thought Buffalo gave him too many opportunities to catch the puck and smother the play from shots from the outside that had no business going to the net. Agree with the 10 million% partner. Uh I mean, I’m not taking anything away sway. He was excellent right there is best save, right? Um he he was great, but I think he would also say, you know, my guys did a really good job of helping me. Uh the crep save again. he just gets the glove on a little bit. But also, uh, Buffalo, you know, was shooting pucks for two periods or maybe two and a half periods from distance where you’re like, what, you know, why are they doing like even we talk like Tuck doesn’t even try to improve his angle, his angle there and take it to the inside. But I’m not trying I’m not taking one thing away. I thought Sway was awesome. Awesome. Look, calm and collective. Yeah. And and no question one of the stars of the game in in this one. So what what you love is that that’s two good performances this year to start from, you know, from Jeremy Swayman. And we’re going to keep saying it because it had we had to have this from him for this team to have a chance. had to see that.

The Bruins pick up a 3-1 win over the Sabres! Sophia, Billy, and Barry share their instant reaction and key takeaways during post-game.

  1. Again did both things: out shot opponent, second others scored, but now 1st line almost disappeared. Plus mistakes: allowing break away against you on your own power play, not scoring on great opportunities: 3-1, 2-1, power play!
