I know how pitchers are handled is completely different today, but 28 complete games over a 32 game stretch for Bob, a Hall of Famer is absolutely something. The complete game is truly a lost art for the most part.
Makes Yamamoto’s back to back postseason complete games even more impressive.
Not many professional players in any sport can change the game like he did
TIL in 1969, Major League Baseball lowered the height of the pitching mound by five inches and reduced the height of the strike zone due to the competitive advantage it gave to the incredibly dominant Bob Gibson. Otherwise known as the “Gibson rules
All i think when i see this stuff is the pain these guys lived in for their whole lives after baseball. I woulda done the same shit, obviously. Maybe it was worth it
In the six games that season he didn’t pitch a complete game,he was lifted for a pinch hitter each time. The manager never came out to the mound and took the ball from him that entire season.
The man was a beast on the mound. He had no fear of anyone and would brush you off the plate at the drop off a hat. I think he threw at his dad during a father son little league game
The year of the pitcher. Denny McClain did pretty good too. And Lolich and McClain on the Tigers beat Gibson in an epic World Series 💪
3 runs allowed over a 99 inning stretch.
I saw Gibson pitch against the Bucs in 1969. That yr he had 35 starts and 28 CG. I saw a game he was pulled after 8. He gave up a 3 run homer to some guy named Clemente in the top of the 8th. They pulled Gibson for a pinch hitter in the bottom of 8th.
Saw 6 HOF that day. Clemente, Stargell, Jim Bunning, Lou Brock, Joe Torre and Gibson.
Being from Nebraska, I am biased, but Gibson will always be one of my favorite players not from my own team.
And then The Tigers won
My son and I have argued for years. If you had to pick one pitcher for one game who? My answer was and will always be Bob Gibson
Best pitcher I ever saw period.
Great match ups with Ferguson Jenkins over the years. 1-0 pitching duels. Jenkins usually on the losing end ..
Also in 1968… Led Zeppelin formed as a band.
Throwing that 81 mph fastball
I wonder what his velocity was? He would throw inside if he wanted to back up a hitter.
If there was one pitcher I could go back in time to see, it’s Bob Gibson.
Wait! HOW did he EVER manage this?? Didn’t he need a middle reliever? A setup man? Then a closer?!
Finally wore out in the 7th inning of World Series game 7.
I really would have loved to see Gibson pitch in his heyday and how ridiculously good he was I am sure would have been quite the sight to see
I thought Bob Gibson was white all this time…
GIBBY 🐐
I put together highlights for game 1 of the 68 WS a while back for those interested. 17 K for Gibson
