🔴LIVE 🔴 Detroit Tigers VS Seattle Mariners /October 10/ Mlb Division Series 6/MLB THE SHOW 25
Hello baseball fans and welcome. MLB the show brings you the American League Division Series. It’s the Detroit Tigers taking on the Seattle Mariners. Alongside Chris Singleton, I’m John Shampi. Postseason baseball sing. It’s always great to see and be a part of. Oh boo. You just never know what’s in store when it comes to postseason baseball. You do know you’re going to see some amazing pitching, guys coming out of the bullpin throwing 100, some incredible defensive plays, some big knocks, and maybe a mistake or two that’ll live on forever. All I do know is I’m pumped up for this one. And we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. just about set to go now. And our pitcher tonight, Bryce Miller. It’s always interesting to see how he utilizes all of his pitches and how many of those he has a good feel for on that given day. And when he’s right, he’s really able to keep hitters guessing and all of his stuff seems to be coming out of the same arm slot, the same tunnel, and that can make life very difficult on his opponents. Now, Harry Carpenter outside and here we go in game five. Swing and a foul out of play. [Applause] Next one misses now. Two balls in a strike. swings through that one. That misses the zone. Three balls, two strikes. [Applause] Got him. And there’s one away. Just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. here and I don’t think he was taking it thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Glabber Torres the next to hit takes outside. Torres batting second in today’s lineup. He joined the team as a free agent and it’s fouled away. That’s a ball. Went with the sweeper. Fouls one off. Two and two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. And that’s a strike out. Mike Fillmore says he went around. Well, there appears to be no problem settling in on the mound out there today. It looks pretty tough to start this one, punching out the first two hitters of this ball game. And somebody’s going to have to put the bat on the ball, put it in play, and get something going. Next to hit, Colt Heath edge of the zone for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Two down. Nobody on. And that one fouled off. Swings and misses. And he strikes out the side in the first. Impeccable command in that one. Three batters, three strikeouts. That’s electric stuff out there on the mound. Back in Seattle and getting to start Casey Mai. Chris, what should we keep an eye on here with him? Power pitcher. He’s going to speed you up with the fast ball velocity and out of his hand will explode the breaking ball. Very difficult for hitters to keep that front side closed and hit the ball the other way because they know if they’re not ready to pull the trigger, the fast ball will beat them. Now it’s the Mariners DH. Randy Rosarena and fires in a fast ball at 95. [Applause] swing and a miss and he was fooled on the mound. You take a note, you see the hitter’s willingness to chase that pitch upstairs, get deeper in the count, try to climb the ladder and one and two. [Applause] fights it off. He’ll see another just missing there. And now two balls and two strikes on the ground to third. Throw on to Torqulson. One up, one down. And now we check out the Mariners lineup. All right, Sigy. How about all the talent in this lineup? They’re deep first and foremost, but the way that they can manipulate their personnel for matchups and everything else, it’s uh very intelligent the way that they use their team. And I I think it creates a little bit of uh uncertainty for opposing teams, especially in a big game, big series. And that one hammered. That’s back. That one is gone. He sends it out of here. His second homer of this series. And they jump out front. It’s one- nothing. That’s a fun way to take the lead. Just hit one out of the park. [Music] I wasn’t sure he hit that one as hard as he needed to to get it out of here, but it had just enough behind it for the homer. What an attempt at the wall, though. He really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back. Swing and a ball popped in the air. Bayz makes the catch and there’s two away. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run, not allowing it to stay in the head, but going to work at the next hitter. And a tough one at that. Two down, base is empty. The batter now, Jorge Palano. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. and one fly ball center field green. That is the inning. But they’re off to a good start as they pick up a run on this solo shot. It’s now one- nothing. The pivotal game five of the division series. Here’s the left fielder, Riley Green, singing game five, an elimination spot. And the spotlight is focused on this guy. Everybody looks to the star players in big games like this. And this is what you get paid for. Time to come through. It immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. One wonderful thing about the postseason, you never know who’s going to be the hero. It could be the superstar, but often it’s a far more unlikely player. You know, one unlikely postseason hero I saw up close, Alex Gonzalez of the Marlins in the 2003 World Series. Wasn’t really known for his bat, but he hit a walk-off homer in extra innings in game four. It tied the series and was a huge momentum swing. Next pitch misses and now three and two. [Applause] Fouled off and they’ll do it again. [Applause] Swing at a highf fly ball. Well struck back there. Out of here. That’s one way to quiet the crowd. It’s 1-1. He absolutely crushed that one. No doubt about that one, Boo. We knew it wasn’t coming back. [Applause] Chris, that ball came out hot. So, let’s see what Stackcast has to say. Yeah, it really did, Boo. 111 mph off the bat and a really nice launch angle as well. Just a beautiful swing from start to finish. Spencer Torqulson up now for the Tigers. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Oh, you just got to delete it. You give up that leadoff home run. Go back to work. Focus on this next batter. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. We’re here in game five of this American League Division Series. [Applause] swing and a ball lined out towards center. Puts it away for the O. Zack McKinstry up now for the Tigers. [Applause] This one in the air. Naylor gets under it. Squeezes it. That’s out number two. Oh, that’s what he’s looking for with the fast ball above the zone. A swing anding miss or weak contact. Dylan Dingler. Next to hit, Dylan Dingler. This is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively. Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate, good game caller, good at framing, but it’s that big arm that really stands out. And first off, Rang is fouled off. You come into the game knowing that unless the ball’s in the dirt or gets by him, we’re probably not going to steal anything today. So that’s where you want to get a little more aggressive on your secondary lead and hope that some base hits, some slog, some home runs can come into play. There’s a strike of the knees. One and two. Well, I’ll say this. As a former position player and base steeler, when you come into a game and you’ve got a guy like this behind the dish with a big arm, you really have to change your approach. Can’t try to steal cuz you’ll get thrown out. Maybe get a little bigger lead, be aggressive on the secondary, but this type of guy shuts the running game down. Hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. A solo homer ties it for the Tigers. All even now at 1-1. You’re watching the American League Division Series on the show. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. Here’s Josh Naylor. He’s got a nice short compact swing. Doesn’t swing and miss a whole lot. Mice back to work on its way to the corner and that’s a foul ball. That’s in there. 0 and two now. That split is a pretty nasty pitch. Explodes out of the hand. Looks like a fast ball and the bottom just falls out of it. That one ripped way back there and it hits the fence. The throw into second and that’s a leadoff double. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. Just about got it out of here down the line to left. So, I’m sure he wishes he could have put a little more behind it, but he’s got to feel good about that missile off the wall. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Auoso Suarez up to hit now. Fouled off. He was late. [Applause] Swing and a miss as he was out front. [Applause] Fouls it back with two strikes. [Applause] man at second. Cuts and misses. It’s a strikeout. Really nice job working both sides of the plate for that strikeout. Started him off inside, then away, back inside again. And that one set him up for that last pitch on the outside part of the plate that he just swung right through. Pretty smooth sequence right there. Now the left fielder Dominic Canzone had a strike in there. And a foul ball. One out and a runner at second. Bottom half of inning number two. [Applause] Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. [Applause] Way inside. Well, you’ve got to establish the inside part of the plate early and that sends a message not just to this hitter but to the rest of the lineup as well. And a ball in two strikes. And there’s a ball [Applause] headed down the line and that drops foul. One out and a runner at second. [Applause] Well, he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit, try to move it around, create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another [Applause] Next pitch is downstairs and ball four to a board. When you go that deep into a bat, the hitter usually comes out on top. Two on, one out. And now it’s Victor Rollless up to hit. [Applause] delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Well, in this situation with runners on, you’ve got to get ahead in the count so that you can dictate the rest of the at bat. Nice job right there. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning on the ground. A second. Might be two. There’s one. And that’s two. Pitcher made the pitch and his players made the play behind him. Nice job. 463 inning ending double play. And we’re back. New inning getting started. And stepping in is the speedy Parker Meadows. Right through there for a strike. For whatever reasons, this is a hitter that performs better in night games. We’ll see what he brings in this one. Out towards right center field. Robless flying after this one. Pulls up and it drops for a hit. So a runner aboard to start the inning. Batty night short stop Javier Bayz. Now it’s Javier Bayz. Hit in the air left field. Kenzone settles underneath it. One down. Now batting right fielder Carrie Carpenter. So the lineup flips over Carrie Carpenter up now for the Tigers. He was a strikeout victim his first time. Fast ball for a strike at 95. Miller checks on first. Meadows dives back in safely. [Applause] The one is outside and it’s a ball and a strike. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. Next one is off the play and a count two and one. [Applause] in the air on the infield. Crawford and they’re two down. Now batting designated hitter Glaver Torres. Here’s Glabber Torres. His first at bat was a strikeout. that misses the zone and that is ball one. Well, if he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way, he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch. [Applause] Out to short, Crawford. They get the force. They don’t come much closer than that. Bang bang play to end the inning. They get a leadoff single but leave him stranded. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. All tied 1-1. Back at T-Mobile Park. Bottom of the inning and the batter will be the shortstop JP Crawford. Rockford. That one finds a corner. Go and one inside. Just missed. [Applause] had a breaking ball misses outside. Next pitch is outside. Last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. [Applause] Got the bat going too soon at strike two. From a pitcher’s perspective, that’s a beautiful splitter right there. As a hitter, you don’t like it. But he’s commanded his fast ball. And out of that same tunnel, that splitter comes and the bottom just falls out of it. [Applause] It’s a leadoff walk and that’s the go-ahead run. Well, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. Back to the top of the Seattle order. Now it’s Randy Rosena. [Applause] Crawford goes and that one fouled off. [Applause] And a big swing and a miss. just threw that fast ball by him, elevated, and if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity [Applause] in the air out towards left center. Meadows under it, drops into the glove and there’s one down. digging in. Cal Raleigh. He’s already homerred in this game. [Applause] Rolled softly, but that goes foul. [Applause] man at first one away. [Applause] Cut on and miss. Struck him out and now two gone. Gosh, here it is. Hit it. Three pitch strike out. All fast balls. Man, he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch right now. And now it’s Julio Rodriguez. [Applause] And the first pitch misses for ball one. [Applause] That catches the corner. Two gone, but the go-ahead run is at first here in the last half of the third. The 1-1 is fouled off. [Applause] One and two now. Next offering is outside. [Applause] 3-2 now. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion. So something in the gap should definitely score it. Jorge Palano in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. [Applause] Two outs. That one is absolutely belted and it gets into the corner but it’s foul. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. [Applause] So now two on and two outs. So close to getting out of it right there. But this inning still has life. face. So, here’s the cleanup hitter. Jorge Palano fly to left his first time. [Applause] That clips the corner. And the pitch two walks in the inning already and he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them. Ground ball Torqulson. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. So they’re able to work around a pair of walks in the inning. Fifth and final game of the series as we move to the fourth. All tied 1-1. Out of the fourth, here’s the second baseman, Colt Keefe. Keefe measures 6’2 in, 210 lbs, and he was a fifth round pick in 2020. Well, these Tigers, as this game goes on, have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone, and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see, but I think they have to. drilled in the air high and deep right field out of here. A home run off the foul pole. He’ll touch them all and they jump ahead in the fourth. It’s 2-1. Boog. His plan was to hit the ball hard and he was going to figure out the rest later. You can’t argue with those results. Well, he really crushed that thing down the line and everyone had to hold their breath until it clanked off the pole. And every time that happens, it just kind of feels like a trick shot or something, but really it’s just a stroke of luck that it stays fair long enough. Here’s Riley Green and there’s a strike on the outside corner. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. Hammered base hit. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. That pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Spencer Torqulson up now for the Tigers. [Applause] That one’s in there. 0 and one. Throw to first. Green back on a dive. Late that time. And it’s strike two. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Zack McKinstry will hit next. just missed. [Applause] Run around to go. Ball misses. Throw to second. Ow. [Applause] Lifted in the air right center field. dives and he can’t hang on. Throws to second and he’s out. Cut down and that ends the inning. [Applause] And welcome back to the ballpark. And now it’s Josh Naylor. Josh Naylor. [Applause] And that one missing low. Well, these Mariners showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. They’ve worked three walks already, so that proves they’re not anxious up there. They’re sticking to their game plan and it’s working. swings over the splitter for strike three. That’s about as nasty of a splitter as you’ll come across, especially in terms of movement. I mean, that thing tumbles out of his hand and just drops off the table at the last moment. If he keeps it down, it’s just so tough to put wood on. Auheno Suarez up to the plate now. [Applause] And that is out of play. [Applause] swing and a highf fly ball left field. Bayz has a beat on it and that quickly two away. Up next for the Mariners leftielder Dominic. Now a chance for Dominic Kzone. [Music] And there’s the strike. It’s just been an impressive outing so far. Continues to pound the zone pitch after pitch and he’s been able to stay down. That’s what’s been key. swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field. Corrals it and the inning is over. Three up, three down. That time we played four. It’s the Tigers two and the Mariners one. Back in Seattle, top five. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And leading it off, Dylan Dingler. Miller back to work. Just missed. Next offering is in for a strike. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Raleigh pulls it in. And there’s one away. Now batting center Parker Meadows. Parker Meadows up now for the Tigers. One for one with a single so far. And that one ripped to left. Dives for it. Got it. Makes the play. Just a great job of concentration there as he leaves the ground to go airborne to make a diving catch. That’s a tough play, but he got the job done. Two outs. Base is empty. And now the shorts stop. Javier Bayz just missed. [Music] Two down. Doan. And that one way outside and that’s ball two. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation ahead 20. He’s put himself in a really good spot. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. Two balls, one strike. [Applause] Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field. He’s got it. And that is that. Tigers are shut down there. They lead it 2-1. The pivotal game five of the division series. And now for Seattle, Victor Robles. [Applause] There’s the strike. Boo. Over 80% of his first pitches are strikes. You’re doing that, you could have a really good day out there on the mound. In there at the knees. That is strike two. quickly into an 02 count. Both pitches were down in the zone. I think you set your sights a little bit higher because you’ll have a tendency to chase if you look down in that area. [Applause] And a swing and a miss. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Well, one of the things that hitters will do is they’ll look for that red dot on the baseball as it’s coming in to let them know what the pitch is. And if they see the red dot, it’s typically a slider. But when a guy’s got a really tight one with high spin rates, very difficult to determine. And that’s probably why we saw a swing and miss right there. Just a nasty pitch. And now JP Crawford and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Home team down a run. We’re here in game five of this American League Division Series. and a swing and a miss. Quickly in an 02 count, you’ve got to figure out a way to shorten your path to the baseball. Put it in play somewhere, then you got a chance. Next pitch is outside. O2 fast ball way out of the zone. I think he’s trying to speed him up. Got to stay back. Off speed’s probably coming. [Applause] Fights that one away. Still one and two. One down, base is empty. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things. But when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch when a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity. In now is the Mariners DH Randy Roserena. Fast for a strike. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. He finds himself in a tough situation early. Just got to try to simplify it. Take a knock the other way if you can. Twins and misses. It’s a strike out. And he strikes out the side in the fifth. Mariners go down quietly there and they trail it here. Two to one. And we’re back all set for the top of the six. And now the right fielder Carrie Carpenter. Right through there for a strike. And that’s through there for a strike. And it’s 0 and two. had a good eye there. Too close for me, partner, to take that O2 fast ball, but for whatever reasons, he let it go by. He’s still in the at bat. I don’t think he’ll let the next one go. Misses off the inside. Two and two. [Applause] That one missed. [Applause] And that’s ruled the swing. It’s a strike out. Oh, big power guy right there and generating so much bat speed. It’s hard to bring that to a halt once you’ve committed. He tried to check the swing, just couldn’t do it. Torres batting with one down, takes a strike. The Mariners have some bullpen action for the first time. Caleb Ferguson, the veteran southpaw, is getting ready to come on if needed. Jackson, the right-hander, loosening up as well. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. Naylor calls it in. Two away. Now batting second base Colt Keith. And next to hit for Detroit, Colt Keith. He’s already homered here in this one. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. [Applause] Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Two out. Space is empty. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Splits the plate. And it’s one and two. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Foul ball still a one and two count. Two down, nobody on. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Swings and misses. And it’s a three up, three down inning. Nothing doing here this half. 234 do up in the home half of the six. It’s the Tigers two and the Mariners one. Stepping in the long ball threat, Cal Raleigh. He had a big swing for these guys way back in the first inning. Yeah, Boo. He didn’t waste any time in this one. The solo shot really got his team going and he’s looking for more right here. Yeah, that’s fouled off. [Applause] Off the plate. One and one doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Tyler Holton, a lefty, looks to be getting himself ready. Melton getting cranked up as well. Swaying at a line drive. That’s a base hit into center field. So, a man on base to start the inning. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. That’s about as textbook as it gets. Got his stride and load out of the way early. He stayed inside that ball and squared it up out front. Man, that was like he was in the cage hitting off a T. No outs. Runner at first. And now Julio Rodriguez swings through that one. 0 and one. [Music] [Applause] That one’s upstairs. Ball one with the go ahead run at the plate here in the bottom of the six. [Applause] Ground ball could be two. Good feed. That’s one. How about that double play? A very fast developing play right there. No margin for error. Nice double play on a fast runner up the line. And now Jorge Palano for two in this one. Pitches in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Two outs. That’s off the mark at one and one. Lifted in the air right field. Carpenter under it. And that will end the inning. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Caleb Ferguson. And they felt it was time to bring on a left-handed reliever from the pin with the lefty hitter coming up. I think that’s a good move. I know. I never like when opposing teams did that to me. Well, one-run game. Riley Green up now for the Tigers. [Music] Ferguson a 63 lefty. He features a four seam fast, a cutter, a slur, and he works in a sinker. [Applause] Right through there for a strike. He must have been looking for something else cuz he gave up on that pitch a little early. It was right down Main Street. Probably not going to see a better pitch to hit in this at bat. The 1-1 is fouled off. [Applause] Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. So digging in, Spencer Torqulson went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. [Applause] And a good fast ball to start him off. That’s strike one. In the on deck circle, you really want to use that opportunity to see some pitches and time up the fast ball. Last thing you want to do is miss a good hitable fast ball early in the count. [Applause] And that’s a little bit high. And it’s two and one. Bases empty, one away. You’re in the late stages of game five. [Applause] That one misses. And that’s ball three. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball, but missed the spot. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass. Zack, one gone. Runner at first. Here’s the third baseman. Zack McKinstry one for two. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball one. Torqulson the runner at first with one gone in the inning. Fast ball in for a strike and it’s one and one. [Applause] Next offering is fouled back. [Applause] line drive, base hit. They get it in quickly. So, first and second now, one out. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the atbat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. First and second, one out. And next up for the Tigers, Dylan Dingler. And that one upstairs. Ball one. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. Late swing. Fouled off. Runners at first and second with one gone. We’re here in game five of this American League Division Series. In there. Got him. Looking for the K. Went back to the fast ball and it was effective. thought, you got to be ready to swing the bat with a runner in scoring position in two strikes. Just put the ball in play somewhere and you got a chance. Very frustrating for him, I’m sure. See if the next guy can pick him up. Parker Meadows up now for the Tigers. And remember, he was absolutely robbed of a base hit last time up. There’s the strike. [Applause] swings through that [Applause] line drive and that’s a base hit into center field. The throw home. Safe. In comes the run from second. It’s 3-1. Good two- strike hitting right there, Boo. A bit of a lost start for some. So, that was nicely done to beat the odds. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. Here comes the skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Caleb Ferguson is done and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Now pitching. So Luke Jackson gets the call. He has a great slider with tons of movement. Jackson. [Applause] First and second, two outs. Here’s Bayz. Fought off foul. [Applause] First and second, two down. Swang and a miss. Missed that by a mile and it’s nothing in two. [Applause] And ball one. [Applause] left field brings it in and that’s the third out. So, one run in the inning on this base hit and this is now a 31 ball game. This is the American League Division Series on the show. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh, Tyler Holton. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different, so we’ll see what he’s got here. Naylor in the box again, takes a strike. Well, now that this is a bullpin game, it’s clear that whichever bullpen steps up the most is likely going to come away with the W. Well, with both starters out of this ball game, it now becomes a battle of the bullpens. And just seeing which manager can match up better and who’s able to get to the finish line. [Applause] [Applause] swing and a miss. Struck him out. A big first out here in the seventh via the punch out. Yeah, it just does so much to change the outlook of an important inning like this when you got the leadoff hitter. So critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this. So a strikeout really puts them on their heels. Now the third baseman, AU Heno Suarez. Down and away for ball one. [Applause] And that’s downstairs and outside. And that’s through there for a strike. Well, in this one, the offense has sputtered. Somebody’s got to find a way to get on, keep the line moving, and manufacture at least one run. Then maybe you get two or three. Hit hard to the ground and up the middle. Base hit. So, they get a man aboard with a one out single. [Applause] Up next for the Mariners, leftielder Dominic. Here’s the left fielder, Dominic Canzone. He’s 0 for one. Here comes the pitch. Runner breaks for second. Swing and a miss. The throw tag and he’s out. Very questionable steel attempt right there. You’re down by two runs. Tying runs at the plate. Your run is so important. You have to be smarter than that. They can’t be playing around in this situation. Trust the guy at the plate with one swing to tie it up. That right there could be very costly. Late swing fouled to the left. The Tigers holding on to a two-run lead here in the bottom of the seventh. That one just misses. [Applause] Swang and a ball lifted in the air. And that is that [Applause] back at T-Mobile Park. All set for the start of the inning. And now Carrie Carpenter line to left and foul ball. Well, these Tigers digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They’ve been lining the ball all over the ballpark and unfortunately this one’s fair down the line and left and it’s going to be extra bases. Now he’ll turn for second and he’s there with a leadoff double. Everything came together for him. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say charge it crazy. Here comes Glabber Torres 0 for three in this one. [Applause] That one not close. Ball one. Speaking of those line drives, you can’t get too discouraged when they don’t drop in for you. It’s important to remember that you pretty much did everything right, and that’s just baseball sometimes. Next offering is in for a strike. and a foul ball. You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball. [Applause] Next offering is downstairs. Carpenter stands at second with no outs. [Applause] Still two and two after the foul ball [Applause] in the air right field. Robless makes the grab and there’s one down. Colt Keith up now for the Tigers. Colt [Applause] headed towards the corner. He dives but he can’t make the catch. safely into second. He’s got a double. And next will be the Tiger cleanup hitter, Riley Green. He launched the solo shot back in the second inning of this one. Yeah, that was big for these guys early on. Definitely helped them get off onto the right foot. calling for the intentional walk and that loads up the bases and the force play is now in order. Well, it doesn’t get much easier with this next batter, but I totally understand going with the intentional walk in that spot. He’s just too dangerous at the plate right now. And there’s a base open, so it gives you options defensively to get an out. Now pitching. So out of the bullpen for the Mariners, Emerson Hancock. Well, no margin for error in terms of throwing strikes with the bases loaded. Just has to execute one pitch at a time to try to get out of this. Spencer Torqulson up now for the Tigers. Golden opportunity right here. Boo. This has been a good one. A really good game to this point and huge opportunity with the bases loaded. Sliced hard but foul in the infield at the corners. Don’t be surprised to see them come home first and prevent that run from scoring. And that one is downstairs and the count is one and one. Lots of anxious fans in the ballpark right now. You can feel it. [Applause] Now a high-fly ball out to left center. Rodriguez sizes this one up. Makes the grab. Runner tags from third. He’ll score on the sack fly and they take a threerun lead. Well, that’s a quality at bat right there. You know the situation. You need something in the air and deep enough. And that’s exactly what he did. Good pass to the baseball. Zack McKinstry up now for the Tigers. [Applause] Tap foul at the plate. Two aboard, two outs. [Applause] On the ground right side, gets to it with a slide. Fires to first and they get the out. One run in the inning, but they leave two. Last half of the eighth coming up. Tigers four and the Mariners won. [Applause] Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Troy Melton, number 52. Here’s Victor Robless. The Mariners in striking distance, but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laidoff man. Need a good at bat out of him right here. Breaking ball inside. And that’s ball one. Activity in the bullpen for Detroit. Will Vest the closer getting cranked up for a possible save opportunity and another ball. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, hit a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Swang and a miss. [Applause] Swanging a ground ball up the middle. Dives, but it kicks off his glove. He makes the throw, but it’s not in time. He’s in safely. And now there’s a runner at first. JP JP Crawford the next to hit. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Back to back singles. Really good swing right there. You got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. And maybe they’ve got something going here. trying to get back into this one. And next is the designated hitter, Randy A. Rosarena. Struck out on just three pitches last time. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, it’s critical right here that they bear down and turn in some quality at bats. Try to chip away at that lead because if it gets to the ninth, that closer’s coming in. [Applause] Swinging a foul out of play. edge of the zone for a strike at a count one and two. The tying run at the plate. Bows it off. Still one and two. [Applause] spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another with the tying run at the plate here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. [Applause] Hacks and misses. It’s a strike out. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. And now the switch in catcher Cal Raleigh. This guy with light tower power just missed. [Applause] One out. Rudders at first and second [Applause] and that drops in for a strike. Well, a good slider from an opposite-handed pitcher has to stay in that tunnel just a little bit longer. Otherwise, recognition can cause you to barrel it off. And right there, the hitter clearly couldn’t do anything with it. Tying run at the plate, missing inside and the count is even. Two and two. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Swing and a miss. Had him out front for the strike out. So far, just one of those days for this lineup. You get a couple of runners on and you’re looking at having a big inning and that strikeout right there just pours water on the fire. You look for the next hitter to step up and try to do something. Pick up his teammate and his club. Julio Rodriguez coming to the plate now in a big spot. Yeah, that’s too high. [Applause] Robless the lead runner at second. Crawford on it first with two down. [Applause] line drive. Base hit coming home. He’ll score. Big RBI for him right there. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field, and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. Really important at bat coming up now. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Jorge Palano. That pitch gets the inside corner. That’s strike one. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. And that is out of play. Looking very settled on the mound here in the eighth. One more out. They’ll probably hand it off to their closer for the ninth with at least a two-run lead. Swing and a miss and he got him. Good job at damage control right there. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. All set to start the ninth in this one. And now the catcher comes up to him. Dylan Dingler. [Music] Hancock back to work. He swings and fouls one off. That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. He’s getting the barrel to the ball. Just got to work on that timing a little bit in the air left field down the line. Kenzone makes the play and there’s one down. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Meadows in the box now. No balls in a strike. Base is empty. One away. You’re in the late stages of game five. And that one pulled foul. [Applause] One down. Base is empty. That’s way outside. And the count is one and two. gets a piece and stays alive. The one two struck him out looking. So here’s Bayz now. Sing, you talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. That one catches the corner. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. Little bit low. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in game five of this American League Division Series. Hit on the ground to short. Crawford throws to first in time. Bayz gone in the play and the inning is over. Three up, three down for him there. 56 and seven will lead things off in the bottom of the ninth. Tigers four and the Mariners two. Will vest on to try and close it out. I think closer has to be one of the toughest jobs in baseball and we see a pretty high turnover rate because of it. Every outing seems to be high pressure, this one included. We’ll see if he can wrap up the win and get himself a save for the Mariners. And stepping in for the Mariners, Josh Naylor. Josh Naylor [Applause] at bat can be a little bit of a dance. Strike one here, but few more pitches. We’ll see how it turns out. [Applause] popped in the air left field. Green makes the catch and there’s one gone. Up next for the Mariners, he’s two outs away. Here’s the third baseman, Au Heno Suarez, one for three. [Applause] And that is downstairs. And it’s one and0. [Applause] just missed. [Applause] One out. Base is empty. Popped up to the left into foul ground. And there’s two down. Now batting left fielder Dominic. So last chance for the Mariners. And up next for Seattle, Dominic Kzone. [Applause] Pulled hard, but it’s a foul ball. clearly hoping he could get a swing and miss on that, but doesn’t fool the hitter with that breaking ball. Nice job. Just couldn’t keep it fair. They’re down to their final strike. This could end it. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. And that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. That’s tremendous fight from him and I know it’s got the dugout fired up down there. Down to the last strike and he comes up with a hit to keep the game alive. It ain’t over yet. Victor Robless up next for the Mariners. [Applause] First pitch misses. Two-run game with two away here in the bottom of the ninth. Hit to right and that should do it. Hauls it in and that’s the ball game. Every day during batting practice, these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps. They practice this and when the game comes, they make the play perfectly.
