THIS TEAM IS A JOKE! Breaking Down Biggest Reasons Giants Choked AGAIN | One Giant Step
a Giants podcast for Giants fans by Giants fans from the offseason for the wins and the losses. It’s time to take one one giant giant step. All right, welcome into one giant step. The Giants fall in Chicago 2420 to the Bears. Hey, they covered they covered a spread if you care in the gambling world. Of course they did it. Sean Moash here. Bryce Gelman there. the fourth time this year the Giants have had a road lead of 10 points or more and lost the game 0 and4 in those games. It is the third time this year that the Giants in the fourth quarter of a game had a win probability north of 95% only to lose if you believe in such things as win probabilities. And that is basically the anatomy of a disgraceful season and a disgraceful team. and we will break down the Jackson Dart injury, the decision making behind Brian, some of Brian Dable’s moves, and overall what went wrong in Chicago here on One Giant Step. Remember to download, subscribe everywhere podcasts are available. Bryce Gellman, hello. Another Gloom and Doom Giants podcast. Here we are, pal. What’s up, Sean? How’s everything? I’m doing well. I know you’re doing well. Uh, and it’s like I think I’m at the point where you were after the Broncos game where I’m almost like dejected to the point where like, okay, they lost. Like it is what it is. Of course, I’m really upset the fact that again they blew it and giving up, you know, whatever it was, 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Like that’s pathetic. But I think that this is the catalyst for change finally. And we’re going to get to that. But yeah, I mean, original reaction, pissed, really frustrated. Three hours later, what are you gonna do? And look, I’m just going to say this right now for any of our dieh hard listeners here. Uh, as far as the change conversation goes, like let’s briefly get that out of the way. Now, it sucks having to do podcasts and not just talk about the actual game and do a lot of big picture stuff. We have a whole offseason series of podcasts here on One Giant Step, which is why you should download Subscribe. We go over everything in the offseason, but it is inevitable, right? Um, I had the report I didn’t shy away from on the fan. I got concrete evidence, uh, I’m sorry, concrete sources that confirmed something for me. the third person I talked to that that Dable was fired after the Denver game and cooler heads prevailed. That that made a lot of headways this week. So, you might be asking me, well, does that mean he has to go after the Chicago game? Big picture stuff, man. He’s going like he’s gone at the end of the year. And if you’ve listened to this podcast long enough, you know that I’ve been uh I think Brian Dav’s a good coach thing, but it to me, first of all, right off the bat, it’s hard for me to defend that when they keep having losses like this. Even though again I think it’s a lot on the roster game day management stuff with Shane and less about the decision-making. Neither here nor there. It doesn’t matter. He’s not good enough. Doesn’t win enough games. But number two, do I expect Brian Dable to be fired? I would say this. The reasons he did not get fired after the Bron game after ultimately he was about to be, I think probably still hold water here where I I But it happened again. It happened again. Like there’s no excuses. He’s gone this time tomorrow. I’m confident about it. I there was just no way the Giants brass could look themselves dead in the face and say with with confidence this guy deserves to keep his job. I don’t think anyone is at that point. When you see every single objective media member calling for his job. These are objective people who cover the team objectively. They are not supposed to be doing this, but they’re doing it because there’s a reason behind it. Like it’s gotten to the point where it’s like, yeah, I mean, we can’t not address the elephant in the room. This guy does not deserve to keep his job at this point. Laur, you’re not gonna get a fight out of me on that. I would just tell you I can’t say I feel stupid. I can’t say why I don’t think he will be fired other than I like maybe we’ll talk about that more at the end of the year. Um like he’s going to get fired at the end of the year. He now would it shock me if if by the time people listen this podcast Brian Dable was already fired? No, it wouldn’t shock me. But I I I think the reasons ultimately it did not happen after Denver. All I will say is still apply now. Yeah. Do with that what you will. Okay. Yeah. Um All right. So, big picture stuff. Look, Dable’s toast. We know it. I, you know, there’s parts of this game I felt sorry for him. So, let’s just get into what went wrong. I’m going to give you before we have the dart conversation. The number one reason I think the Giants lost this football game today is the defense. A defense that had played well enough. Although, if we’re being real, yes, the name of the game is keeping points off the board, and the defense did that for the most part. But Bryce, I mean, how much of the first half was was Caleb Williams just throwing these rocket lasers that were not accurate enough? Like, the story of Caleb Williams career has been in here, right? So, I don’t know that it was the next defense stopping them. Now, they did do a better job on the run, although it felt like the Bears at times were abandoning it more than they should have in the windy weather. I I didn’t love the Bears game plan, but in the end, inevitably, I I’ve hit my breaking point with the front four. That is where I’ve hit my breaking point. I don’t expect much out of a secondary that’s finding ways to still play Deontay Banks and Cory Black, even with Flot in there. Um like I just write them off as a loss. Um certain guys I like, certain pieces, right? Holland I thought was a big addition back today clearly. um the linebacker play like what am I doing with with Flanigan fouls? I mean, he’s a lifetime special having the play because deput. But like, you know what I mean? Am I am I going to yell and scream about the linebacking situation, which I thought was fine like actually today, right? The front four to me, Bryce, is why the Giants lost this game. Pressure stats are cool. Uh like the analytic nerds of nerds that you could find on social media and everything will tell you how much um the game is not necessarily about sacks, it’s about pressuring the quarterback. And I think there is some truth to that, but you saw today what happens when you don’t convert pressures into sacks. Yeah, it’s one thing to hurry throws, but how about when you hurry throws that leads to Caleb Williams escaping and allowing him to make plays like he did too often today and too often in that fourth quarter. Brian Burns will will get a pass even though there were a couple times today where I thought he could have brought Caleb Williams down. I wasn’t happy with him. But when you have 11 sacks on the year, did he get the 12? whatever it is and he makes an early play. I’m going to remove him from this. Kavon Tibido, you know he’s my guy. Terrible game today. How many times are you going to bite on that inside play and watch Caleb Williams loop back at the outside? It must have happened three or four times in this game and taple tail. It drove me. And every time Caleb got 10 to 15 yards, the two touchdown runs. Yeah. Both of them were the same play. It drove me nuts. Abdul Carter. Do I think Abdul Carter is going to be a very good player in this league? Yes. I’m not I’m not bashing him right now to tell you what a waste of a pick, but yeah, you had another sack wiped off the board due to a penalty. Dude, you got to finish. Like, and you you just have to find a way to get there. You are not Lawrence Taylor this year, despite your pressure saying it. This is a guy who should have six sacks by now at a minimum. He just doesn’t get home. And Dexter Lawrence, who went into a half sexy Dexi dance after finally making a play by the way that Caleb Williams got passed and was heading up field, got that call back from a penalty. other than that felt felt invisible in terms of the impact play. So why am I picking on these guys? We spent an entire offseason buildup talking about the identity of the pass rush. We have kind of floated around the idea this year as the defense has collapsed talking about them getting punished on the run and everything. The bottom line is this Bryce quarterback injury be damned with seven and change left and your team handing you a 10-point lead in unfavorable conditions for an offense. that pass rush knowing that team needed to throw their way out of it needed to get home and be a differencemaking defense in 2022 when the Giants were actually good and they needed to close out games. They had leads with the Packer game, the Raven game, it was Kavon Tibido making those plays and allowing a defense to close out games. This team has four le 10-point leads this year on the road and hasn’t won any one of them. I’m sorry. That tells me the offense did enough of a job in most of those games. This is on the defense. And if it’s on the defense, it’s on the guys who are the marquee guys in headlines. They did not do enough today. And I think they’re the number one reason the Giants lost this freaking game. Bryce, I think that’s valid. I want to get to the decision by Brian Dable uh to go for that. Like I I I want to That was next on my list. That was I saw your I know. I want to address it because I want to get to it. Uh I saw your tweets. We’re going to disagree on that. Uh but but I I I have to agree with you. I have to agree with you. There was a play earlier on in the first quarter. Dexter Lawrence beat a double team, got to the quarterback, didn’t actually sack him, but another play, of course, he did sack him. Him and Abdul Carter each had their own first sacks of the season, brought back because of penalties, whatever happened there. Uh, that that’s infuriating. But in the fourth quarter, you’re right. You’ve got to bring the quarterback down. You have to sack the quarterback. Caleb Williams is a very elusive quarterback. We understand that he’s able to evade pressure with the best quarterbacks in the NFL, but at the end of the day, you have to make a tackle. You are an NFL football player. This isn’t Lamar Jackson. This isn’t Lamar. He’s not as elusive as Lamar. He’s not as elusive as Jaden Daniels. You have to bring down Caleb Williams. He’s not some world beater when it comes to speed. Sean, he doesn’t run a 44. You know what I mean? This guy is not one of the fastest players in league. No excuses. Bring him down. And it’s like what what was it like 15 pressures or something like that? One time. You can’t get him down one time. And yes, there were two sacks in that game that were brought back due to penalties. They don’t count. They don’t count. So whether you want to blame Deontay Banks who sucked and it’s funny because the first drive for the Bears, their entire offensive game plan was throw it to whoever Deontay Banks is guarding. Like I was like that’s all they have and it respect Ben Johnson. That’s smart. You got to sack the quarterback. You have to. And are the most important players on the team besides the quarterback. The quarterback’s always going to be the most player most important player by default. But when we looked at this team before the season on paper, who were the four guys we focus on the most? The front four. Yep. Not the defensive line. And have they been? I mean, Burns amazing. Can’t say anything bad about him. He wasn’t a great game for him, though. He missed a couple. It wasn’t. But you you you cut him up some slack considering how good they’ve been all year long. Abu Carter, Dexter Lawrence, Kavon Dibido. Where the f were you in this game? Where were you? And Dexter, this has become a weekby- week thing, dude. We could do two podcasts on how disappointing he’s been this season. That’s another story for another day. But I’d like to focus on the collective e effort from all of them because collectively they sucked. Yeah, I was I I was so just disheartened. Again, the roster management, the game day management, we get to all of it. Like it all sucks, but like that’s supposed to be the strong part of your team and what the team played into with a lead should be your calling card to go close a football game out and it just hasn’t been and I thought it was so evident today with the missed tackles. Now, let’s get to the decision- making because there’s one I had an issue with, one I didn’t have an issue with. I’m sensing that you have a disagreement on it, which is fine. Um, I know Greg Olsen hated it. So, when the Giants go down after the Jackson Dart injury, I know we’re kind of working backwards here because we haven’t tackled the dart injury, but that’s fine. We’ll we’ll close out with that. That’ll be our closing thoughts on everything going on with that. Russell Wilson comes into the game. Giants do a really good job on the ground. They’re kind of uh you know wearing things down there and then they find themselves in a spot that was all too familiar in the first three weeks of the season with Russell Wilson which is getting the ball inside the five and struggling to to find a way to get it home. They get a penalty on that fourth down uh which could make it a fourth and a half a yard and well Bryce let me just before don’t go longwinded here but just before they got the penalty and it was just straight fourth and one did you want to go for it or did you want to kick? I did, but I wasn’t totally upset with them kicking it. But when you get that penalty and when you get down to the half yard line, you have to go for it. You were gifted that like that that that’s a sign from the football gods. You got to go for it. All right. So So that was I just wanted to make sure where we were at. If it just was about the half yard or the full yard, I was upset. I was upset, but it’s like, okay, fine. That’s okay. It’s Russell Wilson in the game, but when you get to the half yard line, dude, there’s a chance that I could score from there. All right. Look, and I understand that and I think that’s what Greg Olsen was saying when he screams on the uh on the broadcast. Here’s the deal. For me, I think a major problem with football, if you want to call it analytics down a distance, like whatever terms you want to go for it, a major problem I have when watching a football broadcast and we talk about or they’ll show like uh I think ESPN does this or NBC does this, the graphics of like, you know, the percentages say to go for it here and usually it’s like always NBC does it, whatever. I don’t think that every team, every opponent, uh, weather pattern, stadium, personnel, um, within a game in terms of like game flow, I don’t think all of those things are created equal. And I think a lot of these analytic decisions on going for it are based off of assuming every team and every opponent is the same. That is my biggest flaw with NFL analy, I guess. Yeah. Okay, just hear me out. I I know I and you could disagree me with fine. I I’m using that to paint my picture here. We very clearly see and we very clearly watched different versions of the New York Football Giants this year between the Russell Wilson Giants, the Jackson Dart Giants, um the Cam Scataboo Giants, the Jackson Dart without Cam Scataboo Giants. Early on, Russell Wilson had Malik Neighbors Giants. All right. Right. like we we had these different offenses all year, but the one thing I know concrete, the one thing I know, we drilled on one giant step through three weeks of Russell Wilson football. And the one thing that I think is undeniable is when this team got inside the five yard line with Russell Wilson as their quarterback, they could not find the end zone. They couldn’t do it. And it was the one thing that see and that was with Cam Scataboo. And then it was the one thing that seemingly changed with Jackson Dart where you remember we were talking about, oh, do you use these different packages in the red zone? Like we wanted Dart on the field in the red zone. So Dart comes out of this game clearly. They’ve now installed the new way the offense flows with their Russell Wilson. You’ve run the ball down the field. You’ve tried now to get in the end zone and here you are on fourth down and you get that into the extra half yard. Yes. I think under normal circumstances with Jackson Dart, you have somebody push his ass forward and you get in the end zone. Russell Wilson looks slow as molasses. And if you’re going to do any kind of Russell Wilson roll out, I don’t trust a receiver left on this team to catch a pass either. Um, and if you got stuffed one yard, two yard back, and you left it with your run defense, by the way, um, where you’re only up seven and all the Bears have to go down and tie the game, I think we’re screaming and yelling about that. So, for me, the biggest reason I didn’t have an issue with it is Caleb Williams was off throwing the ball up until that point. And with 7 minutes and change left, I thought it was asking a lot for Caleb. Now, it clearly wasn’t. I understand that for Caleb Williams to go score twice with seven minutes left. I like the Giants chances and the odds of winning that game more being up 10 as opposed to risking getting stuffed, which I really didn’t think they would get in the end zone. Now, they lose the game. So, clearly, you could look back on that call on Bryce, you you wanted to go for it and go, “Look, if they score a touchdown there, it’s different.” I can’t deny that. The numbers say that, but in my heart of hearts, I thought it was greater than not that they were not going to get in based on my eyes telling me what the Russell Wilson offense has been and my eyes telling me the way the Giant defense at least had it held up enough versus Caleb Williams up until that point. Now, I should have known better knowing the moment and I think that was also actually I shouldn’t say should have known better when Jackson Dart left the game. I never got the vibe the Giants are scoring another touchdown again, which is another story that we could do on the preview pod. I I just I like the idea of basically holding on for dear life and going up two scores there. Makes me a coward. Whatever. But I think it plays into who the Giants are with Russell Wilson. It was soft as No kidding. But you No, I’m I’m explain. No, I’m not I’m not I’m not This is my own thing right now. I’m not This is necessarily a reply to you. It was soft as Sean. It was a sign and a signal that you make to your team that we are playing not to lose. We are we should be we are we are playing, you know, not to lose, but we should be playing to win. When you make a decision like that, that is what you’re signaling to your team. And guess what? The team went out. They felt that and they blew the game. And Sean, what did we just witnessed three weeks ago? What happened against the Broncos? The defense completely broke down. And who’s to say that it wouldn’t have happened again? If I’m Brian Dable, that’s at the back of my mind. I’m going for it no matter what. I’m going for it on fourth and one. Even with Russell Wilson, I figure out a way to get into the end zone. You need to trust your personnel. Even we like to your credit, you did you did mention the fact that earlier on the season, we saw Russell Wilson time and time again uh fail from the four or five yard line. And I get it. I I’m I’m not discrediting uh you know that that you know that that sentiment like I I I’m you know, wholeheartedly agree with you. But the fact of the matter is with that game script, with what was happening at that time, Brian Dable says to the kicker out there from the one yard line, dude, like you’re losing that game, you it doesn’t matter what Caleb Williams has done before, once you make a soft ass move like that on your your team is two and seven. Your team is two What do you have to lose? What do you have to lose by doing that? And I understand the Bears went down and scored and they ended up scoring the touchdown. It would have been a tie game. I understand that. If you score a touchdown there, you essentially win the game. you essentially win the game because the second you kicked that field goal and you signaled to the Bears, hey, we are playing not to lose, the Bears went out there and they took the effing game and they won it. It was that simple. And again, dude, like it’s it’s I I agree with you. The the analytics don’t tell you the full story, but the vibes of that game where the Giants were were Jackson Dart out of the game, the defense starting to break, you have to go for that. I don’t I don’t care who’s the quarterback, who’s under center. You don’t have Scataboo. I don’t care. You need to score a touchdown there to put yourself in the best chance to win this game. You kick a field goal. Congratulations. You’re up two scores. How did that work out for you? I know hindsight’s 2020 and you admitted that they ended up losing the game. But in that moment, I knew the second that he sent the kicker out there, the second Young Way Coup sent those that kick through the uprights, I said, “The Giants are losing this game. They are losing the game. No matter what we saw from Caleb Williams earlier on in the game, the second they signaled to the Giants team, we are that’s when the game was lost. It’s that simple to me. I mean, it’s semantics. I don’t think kicking the field goal is playing not to lose. I think they were trying to go up two scores. But I you have a chance to you have you have a chance to put your your your foot on their throat. You got to remember though, and this is where the Giants are very backwards and this is where things get affected on game day. Maybe the biggest reason Brian Dav was nearly fired after the Bronco game, which he’s clearly aware of now, is because of his aggressive decisionmaking in having Jackson Dart throw that ball on third down, which led to the interception. He that’s this is different story. But but it’s all tied in. A a coach that has to find ways to win games the rest of the way. his safest bet without his ace in the whole Jackson dart was to go up two scores and hope that the defense continued to have its way and it didn’t. He he goes over aggressive there and the Bears go right back down and score a touchdown and it’s a tie game when you had a chance to make it a two-score game. I’m just making you play the other way around this here. Now, they lost the game so it doesn’t matter. But that is that’s a big part of it where I really But you can’t but you can’t deny that that was a move. You can’t tell me right now that that was that was not a move. It was, but I think that you have a pitch team and the co and the coach and the coach was coaching to the players he had on the field. I mean, you’re down no scatter, no dart, no neighbors in that spot. It doesn’t matter. You can’t make a move like that. When your job is on the line, you need to lose the game. But if you lose the game after you you showed, you know, a pair of balls, it is what it is. It is lost the game. Okay. But you lost the game even with that decision. That looks three times worse. You lose the game after going for it. Okay, that sucks. That’s a bad call. But you kick the field goal and then you still lose. That’s not a good look. I want I want my coach, and this goes for any sport, to coach to the personnel he has. And don’t coach out of your shoes, dude. Personnel at the half yard line. It has nothing to do with Yes. They don’t have the personnel to get it in the end zone there. They don’t. I’m I’m I’m just saying a quarterback sneak is going to score there. Russell Wilson’s not a tiny quarter. This isn’t Kyler Murray. Russell Wilson’s a thick and who’s pushing a thick quarterback. Now, the other Daniel Bellinger, I thought the biggerous the bigger egregious move for Brian Dable. Um the Daniel Bellinger drop that absolutely needs to be a field goal attempt from the 20 at that point as well. That is a 7-7 game in the first half. I understand if Bellinger holds on to the ball. It’s not the easiest catch in the world. He did have two hands on it. He needs to make the catch. That’s a guy who’s usually short-handed, so I didn’t mind going to him. Dude, that’s another spot where I thought in that game, uh, you’re four yards out. Again, you have dart, which is why they’re going for it. If you kick a field goal there and you go up 10-7 instead of 7-7, those are bigger points that you’re still chasing later in this game. Sean, you’re saying you’re saying you’re saying coach to your personnel. Going for that was coaching to the personnel because Young Way Coup, you know, the Giant situation with kickers. You can’t say that. You got to coach the personnel on the other side. You can I I can I can because this is exactly I’m glad you said this cuz I think I tweeted this part too with Young Way Coup in that weather. It was not a long field goal at 77. Your chances of converting the touchdown were low. I wanted to know out of my kicker in that spot what I had the rest of the game. And if Young Way Coup makes it, we’re up 10-7. If he misses it, I know I throw him in the cooler the rest of the game because at some point in that game, you might have been relying on Young Way Coup to make a big kick. Now, what if you know later in the game, they’re driving late. If they have six and instead of four, they’re driving for just play for a field goal. Again, at least give yourself a prayer. I’m tired of this team leaving points on the board early in games. Like, it’s it’s maddening. You’re allowed to kick field goals. It’s in the rule book. And if again young way this you’re you’re answering my whole question about the biggest issue with the team by the way coach to your personnel. You’re using that against me with the kicker. Why are they in this kicker situation? Why do they not have any why do they not have anybody around the goal line that could push a Russell Wilson in? Why is Russell Wilson here if he can’t run a team within the goal line? Why is Gunnar Schevky the guy coming in making a great play in the end zone breaking up a ball the moment Sllayton gets hurt and Hyatt is not? Why is Evan Neil not moved at the deadline and just sitting there like dead weight? Um there why why does K Banks have to play every week despite injury? Why not on table? That’s on Shane. This is my point. No, I know the biggest problem with this Giant team remains the fact that their game day roster management is atrocious. And it’s atrocious because of too many failures in decision-making by a general manager is seemingly safe. This loss, I gave you the the defensive line at the comfort for him. The number two reason they lost this game is not because Brian Dable elected to kick a field goal. Brian able to elect to kick a field goal because the roster that Joe Shane put together cannot overcome certain injuries. If they were able to stay healthy with their starting 22 out there all season long, could the Giants with Jackson Dart as the quarterback? Could the Giants be a competitive football team? They can. But we have seen little by little, they can’t survive the neighbors injury. They can’t survive the Scataboo injury. They’re definitely not surviving the dart injury. Can’t survive the pulse injury. No one. They’ve got a million. So on the bet that’s on the GM by year four. Your depth should be better than that. No, no, no, I know. I’m playing devil’s advocate here. They were in position to win that game even with all those intangible. Exactly. So you got to play and the coach couldn’t coach winning plays because the roster stinks. I’m saying this because Dable’s going to be gone and it’s a joke that Joe Shane is staying. That’s the problem. And the game day roster management situations are not going to change. Dude, it’s just like it sucks because I I I I agree with you in what you said earlier is like we have to focus on all this big picture stuff, but I really did want to break down the game. Like Theo Johnson was really good at this game. You know, he didn’t have any drops. Uh terrific. Uh such an insane catch. Dude, Sllayton looked good in that game. It’s really unfortunate that we can’t foc I I sit down and I try, you know, like I write notes. I try, you know, like I really want to get the full experience for this podcast. We can come on and talk about the X’s and O’s. Yeah. But instead, we have to come on here and talk about whether the coach should be fired, whether the GM should go, whether Shane Bowen is a terrorist or not. Like that’s that’s the kind of stuff that we’re talking about week in and week out when it shouldn’t be that. We should be at this point. And Sean, you said it earlier to your credit. They should be six and four right now. They should be right now. They should be in the playoff hunt. They should be near the top of the NFC East. Instead, they’re nowhere. They’re six feet under because they keep shooting themselves in the leg. No pun intended. Whatever happened there. So, let’s I guess let’s close with positive negative and that’s surrounding the whole quarterback situation. So, um positive. The one thing I will take away from this game as the door closes on the 2025 Giants and I look ahead to the 2026, 2027, 2028 Giants and behy is simply this. This is my biggest positive of the game. Um, windy conditions, snowy conditions, sleety conditions, cold conditions. Forget, we’re going to get to the injury, so just don’t jump me on that. Jackson Dart passed the test with flying colors again with crap around him on offense. Now, he threw a bad play that Gunnar bailed him out on. Uh, Darius Sllayton made an incredible catch, but in terms of handling the elements as a quarterback that’s going to have to play in the Northeast, um, throwing as much on his plate as possible, I thought Jackson Dart was simply impressive today. I you know when the pocket broke down again keeping his eyes down the field great design runs great um we’ll get to the injury and the negative in a second but Bryce overall I mean that has to be again another big takeaway is that you sit here at two and eight but once again it’s just another if you have to try to figure out different ways this year like hey what are other tests Jackson Dart needs to pass as a franchise quarterback going forward perfect like everything that happened in Chicago in terms of like the cold the win like we haven’t seen that yet and I thought it was noticeable that he was a better quarter Caleb Williams. Yeah. And and it’s these are the tests that you have to pass. He has no help whatsoever. Zero. He’s missing a top three receiver in the NFL. He’s missing his buddy and someone who was becoming a top 10 running back in the league at the point of his injury. These are guys that are very important to the team. And the Giants are going to have cap room this summer. They’re going to be able to replace Greg Van Roden, I hope, at at right guard. Who knows what’s going to happen with with Illuminor at right tackle. Whether they decide to keep him or not, the offense will look a lot better than it did or it will the rest of the way. Uh it’s just there’s no talent and he passed with flying colors. You always feel with Jackson Dart that the game is under control. And this is why I came on here singing a different tune, Sean, than I did against the Broncos because that sucked. And this sucks as well. But we are seeing from Jackson Dart what we’ve always wanted. This has been our wet dream over the last three years doing this podcast. I had to say it. It’s I’ve said this before and I’ve gotten called out for, but it’s true. Is it not? Have we not all went to sleep and and and dreamed of Jackson Dart, the type of player that he is, someone who could have huge plays on the flight? That’s the biggest thing that I that I take away with him. All these plays break down. Like a lot of plays have broken down. We saw it with Daniel Jones. He wasn’t able to extend plays. He didn’t understand when the pressure was getting to him. Jackson Dart is the polar opposite. The polar opposite. And they say and they compare him a lot to Patrick Mahomes, but that’s the best, you know, like the best comparison to him and how he’s able to do this. And that one ability, that one skill, Sean, is what has me sitting here saying, “Oh well, oh well, Malik Neighbors is going to be amazing for him as a bailout option on the second and third route that he’s going to have to run. He will always be open at the end of every play. And if he’s not that someone else will be open because he’s double teamed. All right. Like these extensions of plays have me thinking about the future. They have me excited about what could come with Jackson Dart under center because they’re actual good players that they are missing out on. And they will get another another wide receiver. They’ll get something. They’ll draft an offensive line. And Sean, here’s the other thing and I hate to be at this point because like I was there last year. I was there the year before. I was vindicated both times even though they did it worked out with Dart. Uh tanking. We’ve talked about it a million times. Is that a word we mentioned once over the last three weeks? No. And frankly, is that something we’ve talked about at all? No. Frankly, I don’t I don’t care where the Giants are. I don’t either. I don’t either. But like the silver lining is the fact that we know next year they will have a lot of effing talent and they will have a top three pick potentially, Sean. They will they could have a top three pick. I mean, you look at the Commanders game, you look at the Cowboys game, they could win both those games. Either way, the Jets win. Bryce, this will be I’m I’m gonna push hard for this. Um, and again, I’m going to close with the dart injury. So, if you’re hanging in there for that, just hold on. I’m going I’m going to be on top of this. And I want this to be my early take and a strong take. If the Giants are picking top three in this draft, trading out. Yeah. I I think that now again, I’m not trading for a bucket of balls and the Titans could be ahead of them where they’re getting the trade partner. If you have a team hungry for a quarterback or like the Jaguars did for Travis Hunter this year, I think the Giants without having a third round pick this year because of the Jackson Dar tradeup are a prime candidate to move back a few slots. Dare I say pick up a one in 2027, a two or a three this year. Um unfortunate the quarterback class is kind of underwhelming this year next year if they sucked. I’m just I’m I say that now. Just remember this. the quarterbacks that are coming out this year. This is not what we thought it was. Like we thought Drew Allar, we thought maybe Arch Manning. Yeah. Um go down the line and instead we’re getting Tai Simpson, we’re getting Fernando Mendoza who people are high on. Like this changes year to year. Um and this is still a situation we still could get those quarterbacks high or you could get, you know, somebody wanting to go after, you know, Carell Tate high. Like all I’m saying is I’m okay trading out. Um if we get to that. Now, real quickly on the darn injury, this sucks. Um, we’ve talked about it. It probably was inevitable with the shots he takes. I actually thought Dart did a good job today. The couple slides he had throwing the ball away. This is the irony of him getting hurt like this is that you saw again, he’s learning as far as like the slotting and throwing the ball away. But I’ve really come to this take. He gets rocked today on a quarterback run. I’m sorry. There’s two takes I have here. If you’ve watched enough Jackson Dart at Miss and you’ve watched enough Jackson Dart with the Giants, Jackson Dart is a psychopath physically. Get down. Get down. He’s doing better at getting down. But in one of those, he’s fighting for a first down. If you want to blame that on the head coach, blame it on the head coach. This is who Jackson Dart is going to be as a quarterback. And it’s part of why we love him. You need him to be on the field. And hopefully by missing a game with a concussion, which I’m assuming is going to happen, that’s what I said. It’s exactly what I said. It it could help him learn. Yep. But you also don’t want to teach this tenacity out of him because it’s part of what makes him great, too. And you have to live with the good and the bad. Unfortunately, look what the Commanders are dealing with with Jaden Daniels who plays to a lighter weight and him missing games. Like, when they’re in there and they’re on, they’re special. It’s a new breed of quarterback in the NFL, okay? This isn’t 20 years ago where you got to be a pocket passer at all times. Dart will get better. You know how else Dart gets better? When he isn’t relying on being the only playmaker in the offense. That’s what I’m saying. That’s what I’m saying. You’re right. Not having neighbors where, hey, if you roll out, damn, neighbors is there. Let me just like that is a big deal to be able to know like 50/50 Bulls I’m going to give. He had the highest target share of any player in the NFL on a single team. You notice how he’s taken more hits the last two weeks without Scataboo, too. The Scataboo dump offs next year if they get a legitimate number two receiver in the draft or FA, whatever the hell they end up doing, that makes a difference. Jackson Dart is looking around at weapons and and by the way the play calling is looking around at weapons that keep dropping passes for him that aren’t getting much separation and he is the weapon. You’re using both. So not it’s not to say Jackson Dart is not going to be a running threat, a physical threat, not be in danger of getting hurt when he gets those guys back, but you are only raising the ante of more of that because he’s the he scored both touchdowns. He’s the offensive playmaker. So with a better roster on top of the coaching, it should do that. So no, I’m not acting like Jackson Dart. Oh my god, he got a concussion today. He’s never going to be coached out. This is all on table. His career’s over. It’s not like it’s a learning lesson. Um, now the unfortunate learning lesson for us that do this podcast, Bryce, is we’re probably getting a Now, I shouldn’t say probably. Concussion protocols. We maybe he’ll pass it off flying colors. I would just say there’s a fair chance we’re getting a Russell Wilson game versus the Packers. Start Jamus. We will have that disc. Perfect tease. We will have that discussion on the preview podcast. Okay, which is why you want to download and subscribe. One giant step. gave you a little over 30 minute here. Look, me and Bryce breaking it down, doing this. It’s better than watching the Knicks destroy the Nets for the 50th time. Yeah, look at that. Um, boy, I remember an error. What a pathetic what a pathetic team. Yeah, it is. Okay, but what is that? What is that? How long ago? 15. 20 years ago. You weren’t even alive when the 2002 2003 you were finals, back-to-back years. And what happened in both those finals? How many games did you win? Two. Both those finals combined, I think. Damn. Bryce, you ever going to win a championship in your life? Okay. Hopefully. Bryce Gellman on X on Shores on X and Twitter. Uh enjoy. Thanks for t thanks for listening to One Giant Step. We’ll see you next week.
Shaun Morash and Bryce Gelman react to yet another epic collapse from the Giants, this time against the Bears in Chicago. They discuss the biggest reason why the loss happened, how they felt about Daboll’s decision to kick the FG in the 4th quarter, and more.

Black Monday is coming for HC Brian Daboll soon!
John Mara won't show no "Mercy".👎
I don’t know why this was so entertaining, Rarely I agree with both people in a disagreement.
My fear is that they keep Schoen. He’s done nothing to increase the talent pool and manage the salary cap after 4 years. Need to clean house including the nepotism hires in the front office.
Excuses ! team sucks, I don't want to hear “woulda coulda shoulda” Fire Everyone !
I know Wellington Mara is turning over on his grave by the way this team is performing and he may turn on his grave even more when I say that John Mara should full-blown sell this team and get his health straighten out
How many head coaches and gm do we have to fire before you guys openly admit that this organization is rotten from the top down.. this is an internal problem.. has been for the last 15 yrs..
At home, against the Niners, there were more Niners fans than Giants fans, a plane flew above (paid for by a fan, I think) saying to mara to clean house, they got booed and they got beat pretty bad (score did not tell the story and you know if you watched the game) by a pretty beat up niners team. Backup QB, most of the defense was injured, injuries on their OL, etc, etc. Then, this game, another collapse in a game they controlled. I can't imagine someone does nto get fired. Are you going back to have another home game with this same staff? Are you goign to risk it getting to the point where banners and signs are all over, boos every game the whole game, away teams having more fans at your house, etc? It is only goign to get worse. Had they won today, it would have cooled that down. However, having the win controlled and then collapsing in the final quarter AGAIN. It is only goign to get worse. I just don't see how you don't make some sort of move now if you don't want the fan base to lose their minds. If you are almost 100% you are firing Daboll and Bowen at the end of the season, nothing in it for you to keep them the rest of the season, and the fans are losing their minds.
GIANTS SHOULD BE 7-3. DABOLL IS NOT ALL OF THE BLAME ! HE HAS ONE MORE YR ON his contract. So let him coach next season dart , nabers, and SKATTEBO will be back ! I see playoffs! Next season!
One simple example_even though there are plenty of examples_ tells it all about Brian Daboll. Russell Wilson is terrible and yet Brian Daboll makes him QB2. It makes no sense.
So what if Russell Wilson is QB2. What stops Brian Daboll from playing Jameis Winston instead of Russell Wilson in case Jaxson Dart is hurt?
Brian Daboll is the dumbest coach I've ever seen.
Bowen Dabol Shoen need to go!! The Bears dropped many passes. We could have lost by a lot more.
16:05 Exactly, this is where COTY Daboll and the Daboll we see now are different.. dude plays not to lose. Tired of watching the draft order half way through the season each year
They better get serious about protecting Darts brain. He’s had arguably 4+ concussions already. Scary stuff.
Reports suggest Dart’s concussion is SEVERE. Thus 2 more severe concussions = CAREER OVER! At this rate he’ll be done after 14 more games, they need to draft another QB, tragic
He’s not better then Caleb stop it goofies
Jameis Winston had a way better shot of saving that game then Wilson. We all know that's true. Not to mention, our defense can't tackle a 5 year old!
Daboll is risking turning Dart into a vegetable 🥕just to save his job.
inagine firing daboll and allowing joe schoen to pick another coach. Fire both of them. NOW.
If Dart if out for awhile, please keep Wilson on the bench. He is a waste of a uniform. Jameis will throw some bad picks, but at least he throws it down the field and will be entertaining.
You said "you're doing well" and "I'm doing well" too many times to actually be doing well.
Dudes….. Shut the F UP! We have two effing wins. The entire coaching staff will be fired. Just go for it or take the higher draft pick!
This game would not have been close if Zaccheaus didn’t forget how to catch the ball. Caleb is on his third HC and fourth OC. We’re finally righting the ship.
That said, I wouldn’t let Daboll be in the same county as Jaxson Dart, ever again.
You do understand your front four is only as effective as your secondary, right? And lets not BS each other, this secondary is HORRIBLE. Period. That said, yes, the pass rush is also lacking. But again, if receivers are running open because of a porous secondary, this allows the QB to get rid of the ball before the pass rush gets there. Yes, the rush has to get there, but if receivers are open because the secondary can't cover anything, well….
Good God this is awful! What are we supposed to do? Fire Daboll and Shoen tomorrow. Hire anyone. Hire the pretzel guy.
Morash…. Dude. Mendoza isn't leaving Indiana yet. He will make way more Million$ staying at Indiana another season. Think dude! Even if he does, why bring him up???
The look on Daboll's face and his body language at the end of the game is all you need to see. He's finished.
Daboll and Bowen need to go now because they both play to not lose which gets you beat more often than not. The Giants ownership should strongly consider sitting down Dart for the rest of the season because with their lack of weapons Dart has to do too much and they can't protect him. At 2-8 the season is over anyway, the kids future is more important.
