This Changes EVERYTHING… Cubs Pursuing the Player Who SNUBBED Them! latest Chicago Cubs news
From the heart of Wrigleyville, where legends are born, this is Chicago Cubs News Today. Hello, Cubs fans. It’s November 10th, 2025, and the off season has barely begun, but the front office in Chicago is already moving. The chatter I’m hearing behind the scenes is clear. There is a mandate to add an impact bat. However, we need to be realistic about how Jed Hoyer and Carter Hawkins are approaching the market. The first big piece of news, which I’ve been signaling for weeks, is something many of you need to hear directly. Kyle Tucker will not be a Chicago Cub. I know, I know he’s the big name, the franchise altering bat, but the projections I’m seeing and which reliable sources confirm place his value near $400 million. $400 million. Let’s put that in context. The largest contract the Cubs have ever given in history was to Danby Swanson. $177 million. Double that. Well, that’s just not how this front office operates. They are not going to set an entirely new precedent and shatter their entire payroll structure for one single player as good as he is. Therefore, my reports indicate the Cubs do not expect to be competitive in that specific market whatsoever. They are for all intents and purposes out of the Tucker sweep stakes. That’s disappointing for some, but it’s the fiscal reality of the situation the team is in. The strategy isn’t to spend recklessly, it’s to spend intelligently. And this is where the real chess match begins. If you can’t buy the $400 million million luxury item, you have to find the elite value in the next tier. And that next tier has has very very interesting names. Peter Lonzo of the Mets is one of them. And we’ll talk a lot about him in the coming weeks. But the name that keeps coming up in my conversations, the name the front office has monitored closely is the former third baseman for the Houston Astros and more recently the Boston Red Sox, Alex Bregman. Now Bregman is an intriguing free agent. He’s hitting the market for the second consecutive season, which is rare. You’ll recall he signed that three-year $120 million contract with the Red Sox last off season after spending his first nine years in Houston. That contract, as I suspected at the time, contained a player opt out after 2025 and he exercised it. Why? Because he had a solid year and knows he can get more. Let’s look at the 2025 numbers before anyone says he’s finished. He hit 273 with a 822 OPS, 18 home runs, and 62 RBI’s. Yes, he only played 114 games. He missed nearly 2 months with a hamstring injury. But even while missing that time, he was efficient enough to earn his first All-Star game selection since 2019. That shows the respect he still commands in the league. He is a professional hitter, a guy with a championship pedigree and someone who fits the Cubs need for a consistent middle of the lineup bat perfectly. He makes logical sense. He is the obvious pivot from Tucker. But this is where the story gets complicated and this is where I bring you the information that truly matters. What I am about to tell you now is the crux of the issue for the Cubs this off season. If you’re wondering if Jed Hoyer is just going to call up Scott Boris, Bregman’s agent, and make an offer, you should know that there is already a history here, a very recent history. An excellent report from Mark Feinzand at MLB. Comm published on November 8th confirmed something I had been hearing. The Cubs made a very aggressive offer for Alex Bregman last winter before he signed with the Red Sox. And the details of that offer are crucial. According to Feinzan’s report, and my sources corroborate this, the Cubs offered Bregman a 4year contract worth $130 million. Let’s stop and analyze that for a second. He signed with Boston for 3 years and $120 million. The Cubs offer had $10 million more in guaranteed money and an extra year of security and he turned it down. He took less guaranteed money and a shorter deal to go to Boston. And now as Cubs fans, we have to ask ourselves the question that the front office is certainly debating internally right now. Why? Why did he turn down $130 million from Chicago? This is where the analysis comes in. It’s not just the numbers, it’s the structure. It is highly likely, and this is my read on the situation, that the Cubs 4-year offer did not include the opt out after 2025, or if it did, it was less favorable. Bregman and Boris Bin clearly wanted a shorter deal, allowing him to re-enter the market quickly if he had a good year. He bet on himself, had an all-star year despite the injury, and now he’s back on the market exactly as planned. The Boston contract gave him that flexibility. The Cubs deal apparently did not. That is the optimistic explanation. The pessimistic explanation, and it’s our job to consider it, is more concerning. Is it possible that Bregman simply did not want to join the Cubs? Did he look at Chicago’s roster last winter, look at Boston’s and decide the Red Sox were a better fit for him? Was geography or perhaps the pressure of playing at Wrigley a factor? This previous refusal makes any future negotiation incredibly uncertain. This isn’t a new relationship. It’s a continuation of a negotiation that failed for the Cubs last time. The dynamic has changed. He proved he’s still an allstar. that four-year $130 million offer. That probably isn’t the price anymore. That’s the starting point. He might be looking at that figure and thinking, “You offered me that when I was coming off a down year. Now pay me after an allstar year.” And that puts Hoya in a tough spot. So, the topline news is this. The Cubs pursuit of Alex Bregman, who is the logical pivot after bowing out of the Kyle Tucker race, is complicated by a now public fact. The Cubs offered him $130 million last winter, and he refused it. And this tells us two things. The Cubs are willing to spend in the $130 million range for a player at this position. Bregman has already said no to that money from Chicago once. My analysis is that the opt out was the key. If the Cubs are willing to give him the money, likely closer to $140, $150 million now, and the opt- out flexibility he desires, a deal can be made. But if the front office tries to force a long traditional contract, he might look elsewhere again. Now, I want to hear from you Northsiders. Knowing that Bregman turned down a very fair $130 million offer from the Cubs just last year, do you still want him or do you think the team should focus elsewhere like on Pete Alonzo who might not have that history of rejection with us?
