Blues make SURPRISING move… This is WILD | St. Louis Blues News

Jim Montgomery has made multiple moves to this Blues lineup that has fans absolutely livid. We’re going to break that down, as well as comments from Jordan Cyu on the situation that unfolded last week. We have comments from GM Doug Armstrong on one player in particular and his future with the organization and injury updates for a couple key players in particular. We’re going to break it all down in this episode of Blues Digest. It’s going to be a jam-packed one. But before we get into all of that, we just want to say a huge thank you to all of you who watch the channel. Your support has been unbelievable since starting this channel around free agency. And if you’re part of the percentage of people who are not subscribe to the channel, go down below, hit that free subscribe button, and you can stay up to date with everything that’s happening with the St. Louis Blues. But let’s get right into it. Multiple significant updates from practice this morning heading into a big game against the Calgary Flames tomorrow. And Jim Montgomery has made a few moves that at this point in time, everything I’ve seen online, people are kind of upset about and honestly makes no sense to me. But let’s get right into it. As you can see here from Lou, the practice lines this morning. And there is a typo here. Kyru is actually on the third line and Matthew Joseph’s on the second line. So just make that switch in your head. That’s what it’s looking like right now. You got Kyu on the third line. Now if you go through it, you got Buch on the top line. You got Thomas and Snugru. That makes some sense. They’re getting Snugru away from Sudter at this point. They’re still playing with a lot of stuff. Obviously, Jim Montgomery is. Now, you got Shen, Sudter, and Joseph on that second line. You got a third line, which I think is an very interesting third line of Holloway, D’vorski, and Kyu. That can kind of be electric. I wonder what D’Vorski and Kyu can do together. And of course, expecting big things from Holloway, which hasn’t really, you know, come to fruition so far this year. Now, the fourth line is interesting. And usually the fourth line doesn’t dictate whether you win or lose. and obviously put together a couple wins or not. But you got Torpchenko, Sunquist, and Walker, which means that Texier is out, which makes some sense. That also means that Nick Buchad is a scratch. Now, unless Nick Buchad, which we don’t know, and I imagine they would say something, unless he’s dealing with some type of injury or an illness, for him to be out of the lineup, to me doesn’t really make much sense. I think that he has played pretty well so far this season. He brings size. He can play the center position. And yeah, you want to get Sunquist into some games because he missed some time due to injury. But is Buchad really the guy to be taking out here? I don’t know. Maybe I’m overexaggerating. Maybe I’m overreacting. Let me know in the comments if I am or if you feel the same way. If you look at the defense score, you got Broberg playing with Pareo now. You got Fowler and Faulk and you got Tucker and Kessle down there on the third pairing. So Matthew Kessle will stay in the lineup. You have Hunter Skinner there who you just called up for Logan Mayu. And it looks like Bennington is going to go tomorrow. So, some interesting moves. Let me know how you feel about those specifically. Uh, one other thing to note which I thought was interesting. They’re blasting music at practice this morning. Uh, like a whole playlist. They were playing music the entire practice. So, maybe just trying to get something going, inject some life into this team. Here are your power play lines. I think this one’s interesting. You got Snugaroo Nefront uh instead of on the wing with D’Vorski. that it that might be interesting. We’ll see if they play with that and if they move around. You got Thomas and Bushnavic. Second uh unit is also very interesting and I think could do some damage. But you got Fowler on the top power play unit. Now the next order of business is an injury update and I want to get into some stuff. Stay tuned for some comments on Logan Mayu. What happened with that situation and Jordan Kyu, why he was scratched, his reaction to it, all of that stuff. He spoke out on that situation and so did Jim Montgomery. I want to get into that. But Montgomery said he didn’t have an exact timeline on Jake Neighbors when he will return, but he did briefly skate yesterday and then we covered that in our video yesterday as well. But he said that he’s passed the first step and there’s probably six steps. So, he’s still a little ways away. We heard five to six weeks at the, you know, when it originally came out that he was injur uh injured and that he was going to miss some time. Uh so, it’s probably going to be somewhere around that. He is still going to miss some time there, which is very unfortunate. Now, I want to get into some quotes from Jim Montgomery and a couple other others as well on Logan Mayu and that whole situation and of course the scratching of Jordan Kyu that went down last week as the Blues have made some significant moves over the last few days and are heading into a big game against the Calgary Flames here tomorrow night. Now, he said he’s a player that has all the tools. Just right now, he’s lost his confidence a little bit. It’s an opportunity for him to go down, play a lot of minutes, get his game back in order, and come back and help us. And we were talking about that the last couple videos that, you know, Mayu has no confidence right now. It’s hard to play in that situation when you have no confidence at the NHL level. And speaking of confidence, Hunter Skinner, uh, you know, he went on to say, and he was very complimentary of Hunter Skinner in preseason. He said his energy is really good. He has that enthusiasm, uh, you know, that he brings to the room. Uh, and, you know, he said, I don’t know him enough to know if he’s a rink rat, but I love that he loves being on the ice and in the room. He’s got a smile on his face. So, some good stuff there from Hunter Skinner. And, you know, hopefully Logan Mayu can go down, gain some of his confidence back because it’s tough to play on top of your game when you have, first of all, zero confidence and when the team is not going either because there’s nowhere to hide. They can’t shelter him, right? Like, the team has not been performing and you can’t just pin it on him or Bennington or Hoer or one guy in particular. It’s everybody. It’s a team. We’ve seen, you know, even when they won the Stanley Cup in 2019, it takes everyone. So even when you’re losing, it takes everyone. Of course, you would like a save, right? But at the same time, it’s not just Logan Mayu’s fault. He has nowhere to hide even if he’s not performing well because nobody else is either, right? So it’s a tough situation to come into. I want to get into some other quotes here from uh Jim Montgomery on why he scratched uh Jordan Kyu. Obviously, we covered that in a previous video, but the response as well. We know Jordan Kyu came to play the game right after that on the weekend. Of course, a disappointing loss to the Seattle Kraken, but he said, “Yeah, I thought he responded well. He led us in shots. He led us in shot attempts. I thought he was skating well. He also scored. Keep that in mind.” Uh, “Yeah, I thought he responded well with what could have been the gamewinning goal.” And we all know what happened at the end of that game. Absolutely ridiculous. We saw your comments. We didn’t want to touch on it too much. It’s an unfortunate way to end that game. And yeah, Kyru probably should have had the game winner in that one. But if you move on to this comment from Jordan Kyu as well, he said, “I’m just trying to do what I can to help my team win. I thought I was skating well. I thought I was competing. I thought I was attacking the net more. It just felt good to give our team the lead. It’s tough we couldn’t pull that win out. And that is for sure. That was a tough break in that one. And I’ll leave it at that at this point. Uh absolutely ridiculous. I don’t think the league has any principle or standard for what goalender interference is or a lot of rules honestly. Like it changes night. It’s unbelievable. But Jordan Kyu did have a good game in his last game. And I think that the scratching was more just a message to the rest of the team rather than the player himself specifically. So that’s going to be interesting to monitor as we go along here. Now, uh, before I wrap up, Armstrong, Doug Armstrong had something to say on Logan Mayu as well, and he said that, you know, you get your thoughts from the coach and you hear from the coach every day because, uh, the player was up and down, he’s being scratched, all that stuff. But it’s interesting to hear the perspective of the general manager as well. on. He said, “Obviously, the season for the Blues and Logan hasn’t started the way we wanted it to, and I think it’s important for him to go down and play a number of games to get his game back in order and unlock his mind.” And we touched on that and unlocking his mind a little bit, getting that confidence back up, not being able to hide at the NHL level, stuff like that. So, I do think this little stint in the AHL will do him well. And he said as you watch him now, he’s playing not to make a mistake. And that’s a big thing. That’s a big thing. You have to play freely and your game. if you’re playing like you’re walking on eggshells, you’re not going to perform to the best of your abilities. And he said that or he went on to say, you go through cycles in hockey where you get good breaks or bad breaks and it just seems no matter what he does, it ends up as a bad break. I’m not making excuses for him, but he needs a reset. And that’s something I was talking about yesterday a little bit. He needs a reset to just calm himself down a little bit, get that confidence going again. Uh but yeah, and again, the fan reaction right now, nobody’s really happy. People are mad with some of the scratching decisions. People are mad with some of the lineup decisions. People are mad that Logan Mayu after being traded for Zack Buluke is now in the AHL only in November. People are mad about this stat, which I thought was crazy from J Fresh Hockey. Uh gold differential above expected. The Blues are last by a lot. If you look at the 31st, 30th, and 29th place teams, they’re all kind of within a point or two of each other. And the Blues are almost double that. So almost like absolutely unbelievable in that regard. You never like to see that. And then starting goalies uh with uh starting goalie goals saved above expected per 60 minutes even strength. Uh Jordan Bennington near the bottom of the entire league. He’s in 30th. So couple things to clean up. They have an opportunity to win another game this season against the Calgary Flames. Hopefully they take advantage of that and secure two points. I thought they played well enough to win the other night as well, but unfortunately that was stolen from them. But let me know what you think of some of the lineup decisions, the update on Jake Neighbors, Logan Mayu, of course, Hunter Skinner. He’s not going to make his, you know, season debut or anything like that, but he’s with the team right now. I wonder if he sees some time later this week. They have a couple days off now, uh, as well. They only play Friday after tomorrow night, so that’ll be interesting. But let me know how you feel in the comments below. And before we wrap up here, of course, as always, comment of the day. And you can see this one comes from the big Leon 1066. And they went on to say, “The goalending has been subpar and the Blues leading scorer is Jordan Kyu. Jordan is currently 138th in NHL scoring. Where are the young phenoms? Where is anybody?” Well, if you look at the lineup, the current lineup, there are no young phenoms. I mean, maybe D’vorski, he’s been playing really well. Are you going to rely upon him for your goal scoring? No, it’s Jordan Kyu. It should be Snugarude. It should be, you know, Robert Thomas, guys like that. So, very interesting stuff. Thank you for your comment. Of course, we do comment of the day every day. So, if you want to leave a comment, you might end up on comment of the day tomorrow. But thank you very much for watching everybody. If you haven’t yet, hit that subscribe button.

  1. The constant line reshuffling doesn't seem to be working very well. Maybe set some lines that make sense and let guys get used to playing together. Also, enough Buch on the wing with Thomas. Why is that the one untouchable spot?

  2. Mailloux is right to have no confidence…he’s not ready. Would be nice to see KYROU play with passion and intensity every game…except only when he’s in the doghouse.

  3. I just can’t figure out what it is about this squad where they just whack the puck for icing 5+ times at the end of games. Like in what universe does that work? Maybe it worked okay with the 2019 blues, but this core is atrocious at keep away. Sorry I still am not over the kraken loss. Such a throw. Kyrou did look better. I’m ready to see Buch / Holloway show off what they are capable of.

  4. I actually dont mind these lines but I see the third line more as the 2nd line because I think it will produce more offense and schenn suter and joseph is more of a physical energy line

  5. Why is Buch untouchable? He has been one of our worse players all year. He coughs up the puck constantly. We can take and scratch Kyrou who has been better that Buch all year. For someone making 8 million a year he's playing like an ahl'er.

  6. Yes, you're overreacting. Due to the Olympic break there are a lot of games to get through and it's good to rest each of these guys. It isn't like you're going to lose momentum.

  7. Successful teams have one thing in common. They communicate…look at the Blues bench…crickets. They need to be talking and pushing each other. When players make a mistake hold them accountable.

  8. There's a lot that needs to be addressed. A lot more than this comment can do, some would need to be done with visuals and drawing it out for them.
When it comes to the amount of "unlucky bounces", clean up the defensive rotations around the net and stop letting them in the crease and having our goalie dead to rights. offense to defense transitions, and these are moments that our guys deflate and are slow getting back. we have zero adversity. whether it's a turnover, last second game tying goal, or like when Hofer gave the Hawks that first goal. You can just tell within the first minute of a period how that period is going to go with this team.
I honestly think the end of Game 7, and now the SAME THING against Seattle, will haunt us for at bare minimum this year.
