How it feels to be a panthers fan

  1. Incredibly accurate, because just when it feels like you’re moving away from pain, you’re met with…more pain.

  2. … and by some miracle the Panthers come up with the ball and a fresh set of downs in the red zone.

… and that familiar, untrustworthy, saccharine feeling creeps over you again.

It’s hope. You know better, but you can’t help yourself.

“Maybe this is the moment we turn this botched mess around. It’s still a one possession game. The end zone is *right there.* Maybe they can do this.”

You can feel it taking root, unbidden, inside you. Your dead-eyed stare is momentarily replaced by dewy, boyish optimism. You sit up straighter. The sun peeks from behind a cloud as the leaves fall on a perfect, golden Sunday. This is why you watch football.

… and then, it happens. Because it always happens. Because life is pain, and you were a fool for allowing yourself to believe otherwise.
