Could The Maple Leafs Miss The Playoffs? | Real Kyper & Bourne
Start of the week, which means 4 to 6 pm Eastern. It’s the real Kipper and Bourne show leaf hour edition of our program. Nick Kip’s Justin Borne Sammy McKe MVP Sammy McKe Derek Brandeo we’re with you for the next two hours. We are live on Sportset 360, Sports at 590 The Fan in Toronto and streaming always on Sportsnet Plus. And if you don’t catch us live, no worries. Spotify, Apple Podcast, and YouTube on a download near you. So, before we get into the Toronto Maple Leafs, I have to say that uh the weekend ended well or the week ended well because we didn’t work Friday. That was nice. And uh over the the last week and a half, two weeks, we went into a little bit of a charity campaign for Easter Seals. Eric Lindros had his uh tournament on Friday. We participated. We were able to raise, I think, $30,000 in a short while. So, thank you all so much. All of you were great with it. That really was tremendous support. We were surprised by the support. Uh, and it’s certainly encouraging for us to to do that again next year. Uh, in the meantime, we we had to play a game. Can I hold on before you get into that, can I tell you can I tell the story about the draft? Is that allowed? Yeah, sure. Thursday night, there was a draft party at Scoschbank Pond. So, uh, me and Kipper went. Borie was coaching a high level hockey game, so he wasn’t available that night. Of course, go to Tornadoes. Um, and you know, it was made clear before the tournament that because Kipper was a celebrity guest of the of the like one of the draftable guys, but it was made very clear before the draft that Kipper was kind of off the board. He was on our team. He was on the real Kipper and Boring team. It was made very clear. So, the first overall pick was was it Toronto Prep School, right? Toronto Prep Prep School won the thing. They How much did they raise almost? $80,000. They raised $80,000. So, they have the first overall pick. It was Peter. And now to be clear in the building was Ryan Getslap, Christopherste, Kobby Armstrong, like we’re talking Darcy Tucker, Darcy Tucker, like you know, Johnlair, Adam Graves, and Nick Kippy, they don’t care. They blow right through the stop signs and they take Kippy with the first overall pick. No. No. So they just blew through the stop sign. So Fableless was like, “Stop.” When I when I got there, when I got there, it was that I I’m on real Kipper Bourne. I’ve raised money. That’s our team. I’m not going to be taking part in in the draft. So, the prep school led by Peter played some Marley’s time. Yeah, a little bit. Yeah. Yeah. Uh and good hockey player. Very good. Uh I tell him, “Listen, I’m I’m with my team, so I’m not eligible.” He goes, “Oh, no. I’m still drafting you.” I go, “But I’m I’m going to play with real Kipper.” He goes, “I don’t care. I don’t care because I want you.” And what do I do? I go to arbitration? Is there a hearing? But we are taking you first overall. Yeah. And then they did and then Yeah. So I played with them the following morning. Yeah. And lost. Mhm. And then I played with you guys and we won against them. Against them. So they had to play against them. Peter Simicalis. Yes. Okay. So, the whole Okay. Simical Greek. Okay. Now I get it. There’s some Now I get it. Now I get why they went first over. You cannot break that that that bond, you know. So Kipper text me this morning and he’s like, “Do you think we can get highlights for the show?” Okay, hold on for a second. Hold on just a second for Okay. If we poop the bed, I’m not calling for highlights. All right. But we were the opposite of poop. We were really good. The three of us were really good. Dynamic. Okay. So, for those of you that can’t watch, there’s a there’s a I put together an old picture of a line together with the poses. And you guys were like, “Oh, we’re not posing.” I’m like, “We’re posing. We’re posing.” Somebody tweeted me and said, “I’m built like a stop sign.” Which I loved. So, here we are, the three of us. We start the game and I think we scored on the first shift. So I think we scored the first four or five shifts. I don’t know what. Okay. Are we going to do this? Are we going to play these? Well, people want to see some highlights. But is your game-winning goal on it? Okay. That’s all we want. I want Okay. So, you guys didn’t get to play in the first game and Kipper, you were playing with the prep school. Bourney was doing a whole kid drop off situation trying to get around Toronto getting there for 9:00 a.m. Very tough. Get it. So, I was playing on in the first game and uh there’s a story around the tournament of me going on this like going on the ice in the first game with skate guards on with my skate guards on. Oh, you full bambi. And I have to tell you, I have never done that in my life. Like literally like everyone has the story of doing that nervous. This is the No, I just did it. Dumb. Dumb. Okay. So, I thought it would be appropriate to kind of set the tone if we’re gonna play a highlight to show the highlight of Oh, wow. water bottles all over the ring, buddy. That’s full Disney Bamb Be on ice. Yeah. So, there’s the first clip. Uh, we have the clip of our first shift together. If you want a breakdown here, uh, here. Do you want to do this? Listen, I I’ll do it all hour if it keeps us if it avoids us talking about the Leafs. All right, so if you’re going to watch this is the next highlight here. This is our first shift together. The real Kipper and Bourne line. Uh little breakout pass to Borie. Saucer over to Nick Kiprios. And look at this. The patience. NHL patience right there. Shoots it in the net. That was our first goal. Billy Smith coming out hot. Really exciting stuff. Everyone’s fired up. This is insane we’re doing this. I don’t want to do this anymore. No, no, no. Do we have your goal next? Well, we have we got a I got a goal of all of ours cuz we hit the goofy fair. Keep it going. Roll. All right. How about we’ll go to the second one. Bor. Yeah. Here we go. Look at the skating by Borne here. That is just flying. Looking like a young Bobby Bourne. Look at this leg. Oh, yeah. Oh, that’s Willie. Okay. So, there’s the second goal. Okay. Can we get to the game winner? Yeah. Let’s get to the game. Hey, this is Todd Verusi on the back. We are tied 44 right now. 55. Yeah. Five. Five. Yeah. I break it out. Kippy spin play off the wall to get that space to Sammy’s offway up the zone. 97 under the bar for the winner. Very nice. Okay. Way to go, Sammy. All right. It’s got to be the highlight of your life right there. So, everybody kept coming up to me and being like, “Oh my god, can you believe that happened?” Like, I have played hockey since I was 5 years old. I’ve scored a lot of goals in my life. Like, they’re like, “Wow, good for you, man.” And I’m like, “Yeah, you did a goal.” Like, I get it. Like, I don’t like, as you guys saw, I don’t totally suck. Like, were you expecting me to be worse or better? I absolutely exactly what I thought you would be. Perfect. Exactly. And I don’t mean that in a drawer way. You have good hands as a golfer. I expected you to be able to handle it. Yeah. And can’t escape. There you go. Happy. Happy we played that cuz I’m not. That went against that went against every sensibility I have. No, I’m that was quite pleased. There’s a sense that the three of us have some chemistry on our show. Yes. But it it showed on the ice. We we have the makings of, you know, you have a nice grit and patience to it and Sam’s got some finish. We’re able to piece it together here. Good luck. Okay. Now, if we’re doing if we’re doing the, you know, the praise hour here. I am. I am. I was very impressed with Justin Bordon’s game. Listen, you’re obviously great. you had, you know, but he’s like 80 years younger than me. I know. You still have You still have the instincts, but you know, like a little older. I get it. Like you’re a veteran, but I turned like a train now. Borie, the second he stepped on the ice, I was like, “Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I get it. Glorious peak now. He’s in his prime. This is the, you know, watching Kip and Lindross and those guys have the patience and poise and the way they think the game is a different level from anything anyone else is doing out there. It is a different type of game. And the first game that we played, you guys didn’t play it. We got to play against Johnlair, which was really cool. And holy crap, does he still have the instincts like just smooth as butter. All right, enough. All right, we got to win. We got to win. Okay, one and0 for the boys. Can we play one shift for the Leafs? Maybe tomorrow night two and three for five by the way. No big deal in the game. Okay. Can Can they use us is what I’m asking you. Well, you know what I will say? A number of times playing with you, I did notice your attention to detail. Back check through the middle. Good stick. They could use a lot of that. I I got to tell you, I’d fit right in on this here. Leave leave right in, baby. Well, there was Yeah, there just when they sucked you back in, Sammy, with their three-game win streak, they’d won four or five, right? Yeah. Before this weekend, like they kind of had felt like they was dropped. We’re back. I think Yeah, you dropped it. We’re back. Yeah, I think you know. And where are you after the weekend? Uh to quote one of my favorite movies of all time, D. What was all that one in a million, Doc? What was all that? We’re back, Doc. Oh my god. Holy crap. It was lazy hockey on you want to get into specifics or you want to generalize the weekend first? Do we have a coach that generalizes it so I don’t have to? Well, we they didn’t play they didn’t skate today so day off so they didn’t really have a look back at the weekend but we have two overviews. Do do you want to touch on anything Saturday night in particular before Sunday or again do you want to just blanket this thing with rubies? I I do think that it all was connected. I thought the problems in one game were the problems in the next game. I think if we’re going to have a a conversation about the Saturday night game, I think the worthwhile conversation would be to have about the worries of Anthony Stallers where you know like I think their the defensive breakdowns have been pretty putrid throughout this whole season, but I wouldn’t exactly say he bailed him out Saturday night. Okay. But like you not being too harsh on that or why the why the defensive meltdown from something that was fairly strong last season or was it maybe not as strong as we thought and it was covered up with a 926 save percentage and Stallars just made it look way better last year than it really was. I got an article coming. Uh here’s some rush chances stats. Last year they were eighth in the NHL in rush chances against. So pretty good and fourth in rush goals against. Very good. This year they are 31st in rush chances against and 32nd in rush goals against. Last year they gave up 34 goals on rushes against total. They’re already at 15 and we’re 15 games into the year. So they are way worse than last year. Way worse in that regard. Wow. Yeah. Like, hey, Mitch Martner was a good defensive player, but No, no, no, no. This is, you know, this is this is beyond that. What is going on? Yeah. And although I mean, yeah, the guy did play 24 minutes a night. Yeah, but you know who else played center? David Camp. David Camp played defense and had a conscience too. I mean, I’m I’m not saying I’m just saying, hey, listen, I’m I’m with you now. And like to to listen to now them Elliot had a report Saturday night on Hockey Night in Canada about a signing bonus which I think is means a lot to him at a million dollars I would imagine. And I I don’t know how with the percentage of of it that the Leafs expect back from it. It would be prrated I’m sure. But like how about you keep all of it and you go back to work. Totally. That’s uh I fully intended today that be like a strong take. Is David Camp an option? Like get back to work. They’re glaring onions are defensive and bad positioning and all the things he does well and Scott Lton just got popped by by Zidorov and I I mean that looks like a concussion of some kind. So I don’t know when he’ll be back. So it seems like they could use it like I mean Max what did Max do we play last night as a fourth line center? Eight minutes. Yeah it was not pretty. Nine minutes. It’s I don’t know. want to go to Brewy off Boston or or Carolina first. Why don’t we why don’t we play the overview of the Bruins game and then we can kind of move on. Okay. Um I thought three of the goals we ended up bringing the puck back in our zone. We didn’t need to. We could have just got it out, but they ended up scoring on three of them. Um, you know, I think we just I thought we didn’t execute well enough with the puck early on some of these plays, but you know, I think we all got to be better, including the goalie. Everybody, we didn’t didn’t execute well enough and uh made some, you know, for me it’s we we caused all them goals ourselves. He’s he’s not wrong. Like I’m watching they get the first goal which was nice Saturday night. That was a Nick Robertson on the power play. So much to like about that. Yep. Great pass by Doy, right? Cross on the T. Hey, it’s not Willie, it’s not Tvaris, it’s not Austin, it’s other guys contributing at a at a key part on a power play. And then 18 seconds later then Morgan Geeki comes they Boston’s coming through the neutral zone a thousand miles an hour and 18 seconds later it’s 1-1. How many times does that happen though this year with just like the the rush chances it’s just wide open the middle of the ice all you know I’m not as down on the goalending I am down on the goalending but not as down to some people who think it’s a crisis but that one killed me. That one just killed me where it’s like it’s on the ice and you’re 6’6 like you pad down, paddle down, whatever. It should never go in just a shot off the post on the ice. Also, the gaps are atrocious there, which is I think more what you’re referring to. So, but we got we got they’ve got like a forward there standing and it’s almost as if you’re playing Red Rover, Red Rover, we call the Bruins over and you’re standing still and I think it was Lawrence just standing there. It’s like you’re not slowing anybody down when you’re just standing. Yep. So, look. So, he’s turning around now. He’s a third defenseman here. He’s he’s almost standing still. He cannot force left or right. He He’s He’s too He’s standing still rather than skating with them. You You cannot slow anybody down standing still, waiting at the red line. Yeah. I feel like I’ve watched this exact goal. Look how deep Riley is having that 25 times. But when you don’t angle when when there’s no forward to angle off in the neutral zone, they are a little cooked back there. Yeah, I see what you’re saying. Like it doesn’t help the deal. It doesn’t help. It doesn’t help. So, you don’t know whether to stand. If you try to stand up, then you’re going to get caught flatfooted as as Lawrence did. Loren is one of the guys I’ve been confused on this year cuz watching him, I like his pace and energy, and I think he’s finishing checks and doing all these things that I want him to do. He he’s on the ice for a lot of and he got benched because of a giveaway late in the third period where he coughs it up and Minton ends up shooting it in the net. He just ends up slamming his stick against the post and frustration and it’s it’s not a good look. And then uh the other one was the the Arverson goal too where uh Meyers like go watch go watch Meyers on that goal for a second. Just he’s the the play’s in your own zone. You’re def your defenseman and he’s that’s a two-1 goal, right? A two-1 goal. He’s he’s standing up. He’s upward. Yeah. Watching standing up. Mhm. And the the freedom to get to the net there. It’s like you cannot believe that this was the majority of the team still that won an Atlantic division. It’s like not a chance. Yeah, Meyers last year felt like a guy who was a good NHL defenseman who was blocked by the fact that the Leafs had six solid NHL regulars and he just couldn’t get in. He’s been really disappointing for me this year and like gone for a pile of goals against. Can I tell you I have a hard time being like Myers like none of them are doing anything good. Yeah, I like two guys. I like McCabe and Oel. I don’t like any of the rest. But like their highest paid guys like Riley who is supposed to be But hold on. Myers just turned that over there. I know. He turns it over here and then toss when he stands up. Just watch. Just watch. Just Yeah, it’s tough. It’s tough. I get great. That’s not NHL standards. But I understand that, but like what’s the option here? I don’t think Dakota Mermis fixes anything, you know? Like are you going to go get that like William Villanuv or Henry Thun or Rafi? Does any of it make a difference? I think Rafi got hurt right in the in the in the preseason. Like I’m sure he would have got a look, but god it’s ugly. So yeah, that one’s tough. So, a a big thing like I I did leave talk last night and you know a lot of people in my mentions and my DMs like it’s a natural thing that sports fans do but when the team starts to struggle and they’re looking like this people start talking about coaching right and you know I I’m guilty of talking about it last night but I I got to tell you how many different coaches are we gonna just like continue to blame when it’s the same guys that are like doing a lot of the same stuff. I I I I just see him behind the bench and he’s losing his mind all the time now. Like he’s screaming up and down the bench and he’s yelling fbombs and f me and just like he’s really really demonstrative back there which is something you don’t see a ton from NHL coaches and then you see the guys go on the ice and they don’t look like they’re mad about it. So it’s like that would be worrying to me if I’m Bub where he’s like really coaching hard and there’s no response to it. Okay, we’ll response off uh we we’ll respond off of your comments, but let’s just give Bubby a chance here on on how do you improve. That’s uh clip six, Derek. Well, like I said, I just keep working at it. Like, you know, I mean, I I you know, my job as a coach is to get them back on track and that’s what I’m going to try to do. That’s what I’ve done and I’m going to keep banging away at it. You know, it’s all you know, it’s what we can do. you look at video, you talk, you know, we got to have discussions with players, with the team, um, and, you know, get back. We’re scoring enough goals every game to win games where we’re letting in too many goals. So, um, pretty much the season is we don’t um, value the def the defensive side of the puck enough. And there’s a number of things that go into that, but I’m not going to get into all that. We just don’t right now. We don’t value that. He’s right. He He’s He’s wrong because he says we don’t value it enough. And I’m like, you you don’t value it at all. Not at all. Zero. Enough means that you might be close. You’re not close. It is. It is. I don’t think I’ve ever seen as a player or uh a broadcaster in all my time where a team’s down a goal with around eight or nine minutes and not end up with one shot on goal to try to tie it up. But that’s the opposite of what we’re talking about. Like the defensive stuff, that’s an offensive thing, right? Like why where’s the push after you’re down? Where is the push? Have a shot after they to Sam’s point like Craig Ruby can scream all he wants. You got to get better. We’re not You can’t But it’s whatever he’s screaming and whatever frustration he’s showing the players and obviously we can see it, right? It’s still they’re not responding. It’s not working. Yeah, it it does feel like there’s a disagreement, an unspoken disagreement between the players and the coach and how they want to play cuz the coach says the same thing every time. He wants to play simple. He wants to make the easy plays. He wants it in deep. He wants to get off after it. And I don’t they’re a pretty talented team that seems pretty resistant to doing that. They I they don’t seem to have a way to get any consistent traction in the offensive zone. And so maybe they want to make plays more than he wants them to. Maybe he needs to move the other way and let him make some plays. I don’t know what the answer is, but there’s no they’re not on the same page. This the the coach and the team right now. And that’s to me that’s where Craig Ruby really has to coach here. It’s it’s it’s just how do you sell the guys the the you know the frustration and the yelling and the challenging them and all of that. But I I just think from a systems point of view, from tactic point of view, they’re gonna have to change something here. They’re gonna they’re they’re going to have to get get all together again and go, “Okay, whatever we did in the P, we’re changing the system.” To me, that’s that’s what needs to happen here to to get another chance. But give yourself another chance to regroup here fast. I mean, is that something you can do? it is. You can do anything you want. If you’re a coach, you can try to get them to do anything you want. How they respond or or whether it’s positive or negative remains to be seen, but that’s just not good enough. I’ve said this for the last little while now. I hate the stretch. I hate the gap between forwards and and the defense. Yeah, I look at Willy’s first goal where Morgan starts it and it’s the 40oot pass off the wall where I think Will from Ny’s waiting for it. Yeah, it’s a set play which it looked good. It looked good, right? Yeah. But like it’s the nine times it doesn’t work well and it’ll be a lot more than nine once another team watches it in video and goes, “Hey, here’s what they do.” So you you can you can look at it and say that’s a hell of a goal in November, but how many times did we see that stretch pass happen in the playoffs? Like they tighten up to your point. They they figure it out and you short support is way better. They don’t come out they don’t come out together with five guys. They they five seven foot passes, support passes. Yeah. I don’t I don’t see too many of them. Yeah. You know, it’s trying to find more possession is a big thing. So, they are a team who creates more offense than their possession, right? Like often the possession, the other team has it for eight minutes more than them, but like the chances are even, but that’s that puts a lot of pressure on your defense to be in their own end and pressure on your goalending and all. It just taxes your team a lot to play that way. And once it once you aren’t putting those opportunities away, you’re going to lose a lot of games. So, I don’t know. They need to find a way to to have the puck more. That’s one thing for sure. It it has to start with your best players, too. And I know we’ve as as a media there’s been a lot of talk about, you know, Tavvarus’s offense and Willy’s offense and the numbers look good and they’re up there with the big boys and and it’s all great, but it it comes at a price. It seems that their offense and their starts have come at a price of of either give blown the zone or the defense. Yeah. But it’s it they can’t outscore their mistakes and I think they’ve been in I don’t know maybe their whole careers. Those two though like those two to me there’s just not Willie had a bad giveaway. Yeah. again, you know, in the neutral zone and but him and Tvaris haven’t to me been no. What I’m trying to tell you is that if you’re gonna ask your team to just play better defense and I I don’t care what happens in the offensive zone, my concern is getting keeping the puck out of the net. It’s not scoring goals. So, if you ask your team to go back and revisit to be better defensively, it has to start with your best players. They have to show. They can’t say, “Don’t do what I do. Do what you’re supposed to do.” And it’s like, “No, it doesn’t work.” Then, now we’re into team A and team B again. I’m I’m 100% on your page. I just looking through numbers and watching all this. Like, to me, Tavvarz, he’s their best forward in terms of like goals against this year. uh in his minutes out there. He’s done a a good job all over the ring. I don’t think that pretty much everyone else has been any good. And Austin Matthews, who I wrote about today, is such a I don’t know, such a a topic right now where everyone you talk to goes, “What do you think’s wrong with him?” No one says, “Do you think he’s the same player?” Everyone says, “What do you think it is that’s off?” And so he’s one of those guys, Kip, there’s a gif in my article today of him standing behind the net while his two teammates dig in the corner instead of going up high, which I’ll show you off the air. It’s just like it has to come from him. He’s the captain. He’s the leader. He’s the guy. And then I’ve got some other stats in there about how he’s falling off. You’re not wrong. and he would be at the top of my list of asking players, the the good players to lead defensively, to lead the effort defensively. But nobody blows zones. Nobody’s Everybody has to do their job to get the puck out of our zone first. After that, I’m not worried about it. But today at practice, I need you guys to lead the charge of better defensive hockey because they they’ll follow you. You’re still supposed to be the leaders. They will follow you. That’s that’s the ask today. And for John, they’ve got nice cushions on their stats now. Please just keep it out of our net as priority 1A. Thank you. I don’t think it’ll ever be a problem. They’re so gifted, those guys. Can I ask you though, like they’re going to start that in year Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Your point’s really good here. It’s like, listen, I want them to and they probably should realize that they need to, but those are two very different things than getting it to happen. But but Craig Buby and Brad Tree Living have not been in here all all 10 years of their careers. So it’s not too late for them to ask because they’re still fairly fresh on this. There was also a lot of talk for years that it was like, “Oh, they got a contract coming up. They need a contract or what?” These guys are under contract. They’re not playing for money. They’re not playing for legacy. They’ve got lots of both at this point. It should be really easy to sell them on defense. Oh, I disagree. I think they’re playing for legacy here. They will be regarded as the biggest disappointments in Leaf history. If they don’t win, if they don’t find a way to turn this thing around and compete this season. Yeah. I want to ask you about Matthews. I wasn’t done on that. So I just because he’s still the same smart, slick kind of player, right? Like he made a great play against Carolina, goes to the back door, he knows where to go. He almost chipped another one in. Yeah. But, you know, Bunk in our postgame show, I did leave talk on Saturday night was like, you know, has he just lost his fast ball, does he just not? And he’s not even talking about just the shot, but like he doesn’t dominate physically like he does. So, I went NHL edge has stats that go back to 2122. His hardest shot by year 96 94 91 90 86 this year. So, five straight years it’s gone down. Uh this is the first year is skating speed. The top one is below 50th percentile. And then uh time in offensive zone. So 99th percentiles tops 99th 96th 65th 62nd below 50th this year like he he has just lost the ability to to drive a line and I don’t know if it’s injury. I don’t know if it’s how he takes care of himself off the ice. I don’t know if it’s go ahead and list all the reasons the coaches or whatever like whatever your list and I even went through it with mner and without staff. This is an internal thing. Yeah. This is physically he’s not the same guy cuz he did well without MNER in the past. I don’t you can add something’s not you can ask you can add to physically uh mentally emotionally all of it it’s dropped for him and everyone’s going why we don’t have that answer we just know it’s visible in the numbers and I what we see is that he’s he’s lost an edge they all have to play with an edge and whatever that means to you it doesn’t mean to me or anyone else but whatever whatever pilot light was lit is is pretty dim right now. Yeah, he is not hungry. He is not there there’s no edge to him at all. Zero. He looks to me like a guy that’s just collecting a paycheck right now. And so what part of this is like I want to be careful because it could be injury. It could be a number of things. But to your point, but you don’t get the benefit of the doubt of the injury if you don’t come out and say I’m not I’m not healthy. I’m sorry, but you know, and do what you want with it. It kind of played last year out. Nobody ever got explanations. Nobody ever got definitive answers to that. You want to float that out again. Do it all day long. You’re just not going to get the benefit of the doubt like you did last year for it. Yeah, you’re not. Well, and that’s fine. If you’re done with the benefit of the doubt, then I agree with you. He doesn’t have an edge. He’s not physically engaged. And so, here’s the thing I want people to separate. He’s still an elite player in the league like this. But he’s so talented. He’s going to score 40 goals doing this. He’s going to, you know, be last night. Yeah. He’ll be a point per game guy. He’s going to do things that other people can’t. Win faceoffs, all that. But his bar is here. But it can’t help you win. Well, it can’t it needs help. And that’s why when you’re like, we got to give him N and Knander. It’s like, oh, he’s the guy who’s supposed to drive Doian Buzzi. He’s not supposed to need help. The thing that I think is glaring is when you put those three guys together, what it does to the rest of your lineup, right? Because it’s like totally I mean Willie with however many goals in the second line is a different animal than having to have all three of them together and then it taking away from the rest of your team. So I don’t know like if it’s if it’s going to be like this all year, inconsistency and kind of look good some nights and look bad nights, they’re going to be in tough to make the playoffs straight up. So that’s I did include that in the article. Dom Lucian had for the first time since 201617 uh he has the Leafs projected at less than 50% chance to make the playoffs. 48% I believe as of today by one model. There’s a million models out there but and we’re not that far off to that American Thanksgiving. It’s sneaking up here. They’re going to be they’re they’re in tight. This is not a skate to the top of the Atlantic division. This is how do we figure things out here? They got they got some holes to plug. Yeah. But by the way, you’re going to make plays. Can Can I say that’s my take? I can I say though that like part of me part of me likes I wouldn’t mind a different route where they’re no good in the regular season and they have to scrap and fight at the bottom of the standings to get into the playoffs and they come together as a group later in the season as opposed to cruising. Why not try something different? All right. Be a bad regular season team and a good playoff team for a change. Try that. Coming. Why not? It was the part where you said just coming together like right now. Maybe they will. Maybe they will, but maybe so will 25 other teams right now. Kipper, I’m searching, buddy. I know you are. I watched that game last night and I was like, “Oh my god, Sammy, it doesn’t have to be that way.” And it’s not supposed to be that way. It’s not. Okay. And nobody expects you to be great over 82 games, but they expect more than what they saw this weekend out of still a very talented team, right? Yeah. Yeah. I I it just felt I I text Sam, you were in transit at one point about the third period against Carolina and I said they’re going to get roll like the Leafs just like it felt like they were hanging on against Carolina and Willie missed an opportunity and it right now to Kip’s point you can just tell that they don’t have it. They don’t have the it factor right now. They’re not hungry and they’re not they have no edge. No edge. But, you know, some teams that have that are bad don’t have the talent. You’re like, there’s they just don’t have the horses. They can’t do it. I don’t look at the Leafs and say that. They have talented players. This team can be good. Oh, McMahon’s talented. McMahon like they have a lot of guys like that to me where it’s like, yeah, we talk about when Nick Robertson’s kind of having a good year. They got good top end guys. That decor has been successful. They have guys even in the bottom. Yarn Crock can get you. Was a cup winning thirdline center. Absolutely. They you know they have guys who can do it. So I don’t think they’re undertalented. I think the coaching staff has a lot of work ahead of them. I do too. Yeah. And they need but they need they the need to come up with more than just trying to browbe them, you know, on the bench or in the dressing room. Whatever Craig does to get that frustration well beyond past the cameras. It’s not enough now. He needs to be a little bit more sophisticated and come up with a few more different looks to uh to to their system. Yeah. But like does he strike you as a guy that’s going to change midstream? That’s what coaches are supposed to do. Adjustments. That’s what they’re supposed to do. But does that does he strike you as a We haven’t seen it yet, have we? I don’t think he’s had his back up against the wall like this. So, we’ll see. Okay. Right. And there’s pressure on God, they got Boston again. There’s pressure on Tree Living, too, to to still find different ways to improve this roster. And I we’ve had this conversation already, and it’s not even mid November, but you know that he he’s in for a challenge of his life. He’s got uh limited limited assets right now. Yeah. And still the roster doesn’t appear to be good enough. Crazy. Um, David Camp can’t get on this lineup or in this lineup. Yeah. I just I don’t know. How are you gonna Yeah. How are you like how are you going to improve? Just right now they’re they need to squeeze more out. And Carlo I don’t know. He He was way better in Boston. Way better. Was he? Listen, I say what you will about him, but that’s that’s not a a guy that you trade for your first round today. That’s he’s not even close. I saw Myrtle on with Bunkas today on their podcast talking about how they had some buyers remorse on Carlo and they were maybe trying to move him for Purka during the offseason. So, that was coming. I was like, “Oh, great. Jeez, what if we got a small skilled assist guy?” Well, I mean, yeah, the Turka would be like under the microscope even worse here, but I just mean like that’s kind of where they’re at with them where But I don’t know like the thing that really worries me from a perspective in terms of Chris Tanv. I do a real break. We do. We just Is somebody saying that in your ear or No. Okay. We don’t have to go to break. Oh, whatever. I mean, I’m not the producer. I’m just asking. Listen, we played 10 minutes of highlights from our He scored the game winner. He’ll tell He’ll tell them when it’s time. Please. Good point. I just think that like I hope the way they’ve looked and the nature of Chris Tanv’s two injuries that he’s had back to back I really hope they don’t rush him back. When are we going to see him? That’s I I’m a little cons. Yeah, like playing. Yeah. There’s no talk about him feeling better. I hadn’t seen any. Oh, maybe I’m thinking about the last one. I just hope you’re not. But you know what I mean? Like those were pretty scary injuries and I don’t want them to be like we’re desperate for a defenseman. We’re going to put him back in there maybe before he’s ready. He’s at a different point of his career. Worries me a little bit about they need to win so they don’t feel pressured to make dumb decisions. Bingo. All right, we should go to break. Okay, we’ll go to break. When we return, we’ll get a uh John Tvaris uh clip on what he thinks maybe is the issue here. Uh interesting words from the former captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs when we return to Real Kipper and Bourne. Welcome back to the program. Nick Gabriel, Justin Bourne, Sammy McKe. Hey, before we move into more Leaf stuff, I wanted to shout out Kevin Tracy from Sportset sales guy here. Does a wonderful job coordinating all this kind of stuff. And he, you know, like I’ve played in a bunch of these tourns with him and he was he headed up doing this and he was the captain of the team. He’s the man and he’s a slick hockey player. More importantly, that was a nasty saucy through back door. He He can really snap it. And shout out our goalie, Jess. He absolutely kept us in. We need our our advanced stats. That was a very leafy win. It was. We got caved in at points. And Alish and Justin, too. More Alish. Yeah, for sure. She can play the game. Oh, yeah. She’s really good. She really It’s almost like she played collegiately and professional. No, no, you you saw Yeah, you saw some real hockey there from Alish. We we had some some smart hockey players. Very good team. Yep. Good team. Okay. Um interesting comments from John Tvaris. I mean over the years we know that he’s a safe guy. Never really rocked the boat too much, you know, with postgame comments. But like if you’re hearing a little bit of frustration out of John Tovaris, you you know that things things need to change. Let’s have a listen to his comments on the weekend. Well, they’re a good hockey team and they uh they put a lot of pressure on you. So, um you know, at times we did some really good things. Uh earned opportunities and were able to give ourselves the lead and then you know, our game just for whatever reason becomes really immature and we don’t manage the game very well. How do you break that cycle? Uh I mean, we have a lot of very good hockey players. We have a very veteran team. So, um, it’s just the decision to to do it shift after shift. A very veteran team that he called immature. Mhm. Like that’s I I do want to just note one little detail. Carolina is a very good team. That was a good team they played. Like if you’re looking at measuring sticks without Shane Gossip Bear, Jaylen Chatfield or Jacob Slav. But are they are they 20-2? No. In the third period good. No, they are second in the NHL at shots per game. A veteran team with Brennan and with the worst generic helmet I’ve ever seen. No, no, no. I’m just saying they weren’t playing, you know, dogs. This is they had a good test and they didn’t live up to it. They failed the challenging test. What did Hillbe keep the score from becoming? HBY gave up five goals and I think he had over 900 save percent. Oh my god. They gave up 85 shots in two games. They could have lost. They could have lost. They could have lost 103, 113. I think the post probably made a dozen saves. You know, they they gave up four breakaways in the second period. Four breakaways in the second period. How does that happen for a team that it wasn’t too long ago people were saying they’re a hard team to play against. You can’t get into the dirty areas with them and and get a shot through. They blocked everything. That’s that’s that was last year. And now John Tavvaris, who’s as you know, maybe got the strongest voice right now in the room, believe it or not, when he gets the seat taken off of him, calls him immature. I have been cutting John Tvaris clips or listening to John Tvaris clips or whatever you want to say for 10 years now as an editor, as a producer, as whatever I am on this show. All these different things. First time something interesting’s been said. Yes. Like I actually like it’s pretty remarkable that he talks to media for like five minutes a day every year for 10 years and it’s never anything interesting. Politician. It’s amazing that he does it. But no, I got a theory. It’s like I think there’s a a cut off date that you become you you you go into this new version of yourself. We’ve seen it with athletes and and like this is the year that he’s in his mid30s. Well, whatever the case is, but now we’re also hearing that he’s one of the funniest guys on the team. You know who said that? Lton Scott Lton called him like he’s really funny and it’s like calling him chuckles. I mean, I’m not getting what? No, I’m not getting humor out of it, but like so I I think he’s now when when you get into your mid30s, you kind of see where you are, where you’re at. You become more of who you really are as you get older. the guards down a little bit more, you know, like Lango went from being this kind of, you know, bit of a sour puss to being like one of the best, nicest, funniest guys, Mr. Instagram, you know, at the end of his career. Yeah. I don’t know if John will ever get there, but he won’t. He now he’s starting to maybe just go, okay, like I signed here. I took less and I deserve some saying. What’s going on here? Did I just sign here so I could pat my stats and get in the Hall of Fame or do I want to try to win a Stanley Cup still? I Yeah. No, listen, I think you’re right. And what what I think is really cool about it is he said something. You’re saying the the most interesting thing he’s ever said. And not one of us went in here today and went shouldn’t have done that. It’s like, no, he was right. Oh, no. Totally. It looked immature. That’s that checks. You know, incredibly immature. And so, you know, that’s a voice they need to hear. They’re old. They’re old. The team is has got a lot of guys been around. And Austin could learn something off of that little clip, too. And I’m not saying that it’s hard for him because he has not been great, but even if he called himself out more and he said that’s unacceptable and I like look disgusted, look sickening. Like McDavid does it. Well, he’s a grump. I’d take a grump. Grumps are great. I would love an Austin Matthews grump right about now cuz I I grabbed the audio to listen to it to see if there’s anything worth cutting of Austin. Yeah. Yeah. And it’s just it’s it’s not the tone is never annoyed. That’s what I would say. Mhm. Well, he’s saying things that like you think he’s just trying his best to get through it as quick as possible every single time. That’s what it sounds like to me. And sure, maybe they hate doing it, so I I get it every day, but like just say one thing to try to fire everybody up. The passengers thing last year was one thing that he said. He called out the crowd after Reeves fought the one time. Like get in the news a little. Yeah. You know, like for a reason that you’re calling out your team and then go out there and score a hat-tick. Wouldn’t mind to see that. Call yourself out. Sure. Sure. Start there. Sure. That way you can never get in trouble. Yeah. Yeah. Hold yourself responsible or whatever. It’d be nice, but you know, you’d also like to see that frustration spill out in the ring. I don’t know if you guys been following the Oilers, and we’ll talk about them in the next block, but you know, they’re talking about Trent Frederick. Um, you know, it’s like he’s not scoring. It’s like, well, do something else then. Yeah. You know, uh, run into somebody. Uh, we got Willie. Did you like Willy’s comments? No. No, I didn’t. But he he was asked about the concern. Yeah. Play the clip. Play the clip. our year. I know it’s still, I guess, relatively early, 16 games in, but how concerned are you with where things are at? Um, you know, we have been playing, you know, good and bad at certain points. I mean, we just got to sharpen those things up and I think we’ll be we’ll be good. So, not really worried. I mean, we can score. So, yeah, without the puck, we just got to be better. It’s a big deal. Really? That’s exactly. We might as well just say it was a big deal. You know, poor Joe Thornton who’s legendary career. And I remember Joe in like the playoffs fighting Ryan Gets off the opening face off trying to like get inspired. Obviously car’s obviously competitive guy, but there’s that Amazon clip where he’s like, “Yeah, we’re in first.” There it is. Yeah. And like we hung on to that because it was like such a sign of like just because things are going good doesn’t mean you don’t need a jerk of the collar once in a while. And it feels like that with Willie. It’s like yeah, well we can score. It’s like, okay, the standard’s higher than that here. Like, you can’t get over the hump in the playoffs. You know the fine details it comes down to. You should be upset that you’re nowhere near the standard the standard capital. If you are one of the top scoring teams and you look like that, like that’s a concern. Well, and anyone can score if you don’t play defense and you just cheat and go that way. Problem is they score more that way. They have given up the second most goals in the National Hockey League. Only the Blues have given up more. Two more. 62 goals. The Blues have given up. The Leafs have given up 60. Stinky. Leafs have scored 59 though. I think that’s the third most in the league. And they’re minus one. And they scored the third most crazy. He’s got to Bub’s got to break some bad habits here that have kind of plagued them throughout their I don’t know, seven, eight years. To break. What a Sorry, Kip. Yeah. Takes time to break. Well, it’s time time’s up. Yeah. Like it’s Yeah. It’s now season of two months in. A win tomorrow night, Sammy would go a long way to No, I won’t say they’re back. Bring it back. I will not say they’re back. A little bit. I would like to win. It would it would kind of slow it down a little bit. Uh don’t read into anything like that. My We’re backs are It’s going to take a while. We’re going to take a while. I got a little horned up after the Utah game. We’re back. And then I watched those two games this weekend and we are absolutely not back. It’s the opposite of back. Curious to see now like how soon will Joseph Wool get in? Right. He played 36 minutes. He gave up three goals. They they they can’t get him back fast enough. I know. He did play. He did. Yeah. Any reports? I just know they gave up three goals in half a game. Oh, here we go. Got hit in the bucket on the first. Yeah. Great. Just a solid shot to the head. See? Oh, welcome back. Look at the time on the clock. 1840s. Welcome to the age. Straight between the eyes. So, I mean, at least he’s in game action. There you go. We got some some highlights now. Oh, here we go. Got a full pack. What a pro. Isn’t he uh both him and Stal came in as one of the better duels in the National Hockey League. Like, this was supposed to be one of my positives. a a rock of a of a tanm. Yeah, Marley’s logo is gorgeous. This is one of the positives though is that they’re not bad goalenders. I actually think they have good goending. No, they’re talented guys. So, I don’t, you know, like that’s one thing I genuinely believe will get better this season. Stlars needs less work and they need a better option. Any any part of you that Stallars needs a little competition too? Fiery guy like that like the competition for him may make him a little better. I just I just think at his age right now over the last 10 years of his career. It’s just it’s so new on how to deal with this, how to be looked upon as a number one goalie, how to get yourself out of a funk. Like, it’s all brand new. Whatever he’s going through, he’s going through for the first time in his career. Remember that. Yep. Absolutely right. Okay. It’s been an hour on the Leafs and we’ve solved nothing. That’s for sure. There’s no easy answers. Not even close. But are you sure about that? They do say misery loves company. So, we’ll go heavy with the Oilers in the next hour. Another uplifting topic. Rob Brown, former national hockey leager, does a great job as an anal analyst uh for the Edmonton Oilers. Will join us next as we go from one misery to another. Edmonton Oilers talk. Coming up next, it’s the fan hockey. All right, let’s kick her up for the national hour of our program. Nick Gabriel, Justin Bourne, Sammy McKe, Derek Brando, Jake the Snake Schultz. We’re live on Sportset 360, Sportset 650 in Vancouver, Sportsnet 960 in Calgary, and always streaming on Sportsnet Plus. Also available on Spotify, Apple Podcast, YouTube. This hour of Real Kipper and Born brought to you by Bet 365 if you missed it. News out of Friday afternoon. Easter Seals tournament. The real Kipper and Bourne line on fire with a combined 15 points. I I think that’s bit generous, but we can say that no one was there. I know for sure I had two and three. I was one and four. I think you were you had to be two and three. I’ll just go with it. Just go with it. Go with it. Um we did show highlights in our first hour. show. We won’t painfully put them on for you uh in the second hour. Unless you want to show the one of me wiping out, then that’s okay. I did get a a tweet from our good friend Eddie O. Oh, yeah. A text or a tweet? A text. Okay. Oh, yeah. Text. I don’t think Eddie O has Twitter. No, no, no. Saying that um you I should be fined for showing those highlights. Agreed. Totally. Agreed. Agreed. Such an embarrassment. Agreed. Agreed. Um you can’t find them. They’re on like Did somebody post them? Yes. Our just our wonderful uh social team port torture us a little further. I’m I’m proud of our chemistry continuing on the ice. I I will say that there is a lesson in all of this that competing together and playing professional sports or like any kind of sports, it brings you closer together. It was super fun, man. And like I would say that like the closest we’ve ever been was on the ice. It’s like we I think like the hugs we had after and in the having a couple beers at the table after and just having some lunch tightened the group up a little bit. Can’t beat it. That was big. A shout out to Eric Lindros who’s been doing this for I don’t know 15 16 years now I I guess and they’ve raised millions of dollars including on the weekend I think there were close to 800,000. A shout out to Jerry Cogland’s foundation as well that has contributed uh extraordinary amount of money as well. And a lot of the NHLers, yourself included, everyone who gave their time, you know, Adam Graves and Gats and Colby and Versteig and go down the list, those guys put in their time. I wrote a book called Undrafted. Uh that was before Friday where I went ruined your book overall. First overall, even after we told them not to take you, and they still did. So I will have to update that book. I think drafted in brackets once. Yeah, once. First overall. Not a big deal. Yeah, we did spend the first hour on our Leaf Edition uh talking about a team that uh is underwhelming their fan base. Yeah, loose. Uh same thing could be said out west with the Edmonton Oilers. Yeah, we’re going to welcome in Rob Brown. We’ve had him on the show before. Covered the team and he is ready to go here. Oh, nice. Edmonton Oilers analyst for Ched. Let’s welcome in Rob Brown. Brownie, it’s been a while since we’ve had you on. Um, and uh there’s a better mood I think with Oiler fans. Uh, and I don’t know where you want to start this. We just spent an hour talking about the Leafs uh underachieving. Uh, where do you want to start with the Oilers today? Well, everywhere. Uh, the coaching hasn’t been as consistent as we’ve seen before. You know, a lot of line changes earlier in the season. uh the I don’t think the Oilers really had any set lines till about 11 12 games into the year and I think Knobblock is a fantastic coach. Uh but sometimes uh you over coach and you throw the fact that accountability there’s been a number of players who have underachieved making big mistakes over and over again and not being held accountable. So it starts with coaching then it goes to your superstars. Connor and Leon uh arguably the best two in the world. Uh have been fantastic on the power play, been great on the penalty kill, but five on five, not playing to the potential uh that they are. I mean, Conor McDavid’s minus six on the season. Uh that’s not good enough when you’re the best player in the world. Uh you go to kind of role player. I mean, Nan Hopkins is having a great year offensively minus 11. On the back end, you got Evan Bousard minus 11. uh echo minus nine. That’s your number one pairing. Uh and none of the defense have been good enough. And then you go in net and goending I think what is it? Uh I got Skinner at a 889 save percentage and the backup at 836. So this isn’t one or two things that have gone wrong for the Oilers. This is a team with high expectations. uh it is Stanley Cup or in in their minds failure that have gotten off to a a really really slow start that has a a fan base here in Edmonton uh both angry and nervous and uh we are only 16 games into this season. I opened it up for you to where you wanted to go and you painted this amazing brush with one just one stride. Here’s where we’re at. But I want to go back to your first comment because I I I’ll be honest with you, the last place I thought you’d ever start is coaching. So, I just want to expand that a little bit more here. And just in terms of Brownie, I mean, you played the game a long time and you were a a top player, including an an all-star with with Mario Lemieux. And is that something that you your your gut is telling you? Are you hearing that the players are a little frustrated with with such u you know with the movement uh the the changes like yeah coaching is all is fascinating to me. It would all be me. Yeah. It would all be perception. I’m watching from afar. I I don’t have access to the players nor nor do I want them. I analyze what I see. Um I think again I think NBlock’s a fantastic coach. He took this group back to back to the Stanley Cup finals and they are really three wins away from two Stanley Cup championships. But this season started uneven with uh line changes and not just every game. It was partway through the first period they’ve already changed lines and then the second period they’ve changed. Um we have at the beginning of our show on Chad we we go through the lineup and I always giggle. I’m like it doesn’t matter. The these lines aren’t staying together. So, it’s a team that has a num a number of new players. They they’ve got some young players they want to be integrated. They’ve got the kid Tamasik who’s coming over from from the Swedish league. They’ve got Majapani. They got uh Rosafal Ros. I always struggle with that. Rosovich. So, they have all these new players, but they’re not getting chemistry because shift to shift, they’re changing lines. And if you watch the Oilers play right now, there was really a lack of communication with uh defensively. A great example, Kale Mar last game scores two goals the exact same way. He is the best defenseman in the world and no one’s close. And backto-back goals within minutes, he’s left wide open. Those are communication problems. Those are uh linemates, somebody’s missed an assignment. And to me, part of that could be, well, I usually I go here and he usually goes there. So, I do think that there’s been too much line juggling. Uh, I think that they have overplayed their superstars and that’s an easy problem to that’s an easy fix. When you’re the coaching staff, you look down 97 29 give us our best chance. We’re going to keep putting them out there. But then you’re taking away what other players um roles are there. There’s no identity. There’s no road identity on the third line or a fourth line with Connor and Leon penalty killing. I mean, you know what it’s like, Nick. If if you are a fourthline guy that’s penalty killing, that is your identity. You will block the puck with your face because you know that’s the only way I’m going to stay in the league. That’s the only way I’m going to get extra ice time. So, you’ve taken that away from them. And the accountability is the big one. Um there’s been a number of veteran players and Evan Bousard’s had a really really slow start to the year for what he’s capable of doing and the same mistake over and over, but there hasn’t been an accountability. He makes the mistake, pinches when he shouldn’t, turns the puck over when he shouldn’t, then he’s out again the next shift. So those are all coaching things. I know that there’s more problems than that. And I do believe Knoblock’s a good coach, and I don’t think there’s any coaching controversy here. he will be here for a number of years and hopefully be part of the Stanley Cup winning team, but I think there’s problems from top to bottom right now 16 games into the season. I was uh reading the Mark Spectre column on what’s going on with the Yeah, pretty pretty tough on the boys on the lack of physical play and you know kind of drew my attention to it. The only team in the NHL without a fighting major. Uh you lose Perry, Kane, Connor Brown, Arvdson, guys with a little bit of sandpaper. Do they miss that? Is that something that this team now lacks that they didn’t last year? Yeah. I’ve said for the last number of years, the Oilers have been the the bullies of the Western Conference. They were physical, they were nasty, they were mean. Uh Kane led the way. Perry, whose gamemanship is second to none in the National Hockey League. Even Connor and Leyon, uh they give more than they get. But this team without Perry, without Arvdson, without Kane is a quiet team, right? And when I mean on this is a team’s gone backto-back years to the Stanley Cup finals. I’m sure it’s tough to play on a Tuesday in New Jersey. It tough to have the same emotional investment in the game. That’s where we saw in the past where a Cory Perry would go out and start a fight or he would go out and accidentally on purpose fall on a goalie and just bring a scrum and all of a sudden there’s energy on the bench. Uh I I think that they believe that Trent Frederick would bring that. Uh and he hasn’t. And if it’s not Frederick, then I guess it’s nurse. And he hasn’t had the same investment yet this year either. And then after that, you’re looking through their lineup. It is not the same uh physical team that we’ve seen in the past. So yes, I do believe that uh this team right now is trying to find its identity and the team bully that it used to be. Uh they hasn’t shown up yet this year. Would uh a return of Zack Heyman, which I think is fairly close help. Um and I believe is it Yanmark’s in? Maybe there’s a little there. I’m I’m looking for you here. Is there more coming? Um it will it will help. Yanmark, he he’s a pest. Uh he’s he’s trusted by the coaching staff, plays in any sort of defensive situation that the coach feels they need someone out there, but he he has that grin on his face and he gets into the the grill of the opposition which creates emotion. Heyman’s going to help simply because he’s an elite hockey player, right? Um I don’t think you’re going to see the playoff Heyman where he led the league in hits, but you do know there’s a tenacity about his game. So, they will be better when those guys get back. But I if if you’re a team that’s waiting for two players to become a better hockey club, well, your aspirations of being a Stanley Cup champion isn’t there. Now, I I said this team is a Stanley Cup contender. I don’t change that. I believe they’re an elite team. I don’t change that. I felt they would come in second in the division by season’s end. I don’t change that. But they have underachieved. And it’s from top to bottom. It’s not goalending. It’s not Bard. It’s not the superstar. It’s from top to bottom. This team has not played anywhere close to their potential. So that means if you’re still confident that the Oilers are this team that you think that they are, that that includes Stuart Skinner being there at the end. I do. I I’ve said it. Uh I mean, he took them to game seven two years ago. Took them to game six last year. Does he have hiccups? Yes. Uh is he the best goalie in the world? No. Is there players out goalies out there better than him? Yes, but to find a goalender, I think he’s at 2.5 or $2.6 million. This is a team already up to the cap. Um, right now Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard are part of the issues for the Oilers. Uh, they I mean, last game, the start of the third period, down 6-1, they gave up a two-on-one to to Nathan McKinnon. He walked from his own blue line all the way down and scored. That’s not on your goalender, that’s on your defense. So, will Bowman continue to look for an upgrade in net? I would imagine he would because that’s your job. Uh, upgrade on defense, upgrade on forward. I I I I believe that Stuart Skinner will be here at season’s end. Um, will they try to find someone to compliment him? Maybe. Maybe that’s the way they go. I just I have a hard time seeing them going out and get making a trade for a goalender that is um a lot better than Skinner just because they don’t have the the cash to do it. And money money in you need money out and I don’t know if the team is deep enough to be able to pass money out giving up a pretty good hockey player to get a goalender. So I do believe Stuart Skinner will be will be here at season’s end. You know at the end of the day teams like this go as good as far as their best players. We spent the first hour talking about Austin Matthews and he’s just not quite the same this year. I uh I did a segment uh like a week ago on McDavid and how he’s at 1100 points and he’s this great player and I had an Edmonton media member text me and say he’s actually not been that great this year. His touches are off. Something’s not the same. Is is there something to that that maybe McDavid is not having I don’t know doesn’t quite look like the same guy or is that just crazy talk? Um, it’s funny when you said that the team’s best players. I remember, and I’m sure Nick does too, when your team used to struggle. We’re going to make changes and then he would send down a guy from the fourth line to the All right, we’re going to show you like the guy played six minutes. Um, Conor McDavid has had flashes of brilliance this year. I I think like all superstars, their bar is so high. There are times that I’ve seen Connor and I’ve done every single game he’s played where he can go a month, a month and a half without making a bad pass. His execution is incredible. It’s like he and Leon every single pass is perfect. I have seen passes bobbled this year. I’ve seen uh him turn the puck over which is shocking on the power play turn the puck over. Uh I think sometimes when your team is struggling uh superstars will try to do more than they should. Uh Connor will try and beat three guys on a oneon-ree simply because he’s trying too hard. Um I think D or Connor and Leon both have been good this year, but like all superstars, their bar is higher and I don’t think either one has reached their bar yet this year. Their power play is incredible, but five on five, neither team has been or neither player has been close to what they’re capable of. So that’s why you as I have belief this Oiler team is going to get where they have to go because their best players have yet to be as good as they’re capable. Brownie, we saw a little bit of that fire on the ice uh between an exchange between McDavid and and Bousard that went viral and uh uh I we had a conversation earlier on, you know, I’ll take anything compared to nothing at all out of a guy. Um, but how’s how how did it play out out there in terms of reading what maybe Connor’s going through right now with this hockey club? Um, I mean, it probably read the same there as it does here. I think everyone right now is so angry at everything that they anything that comes on, they’re like, “Oh, look, they hate each other now,” or, “Oh, they’re not friends anymore.” It’s, you know, as well as I do, players get into arguments all the time. There’s fist fights in practice. Uh, and when things aren’t going well, it’s it magnifies it. Um, I think Conor McDavid is the ultimate competitor. I don’t know him, but I imagine he wants to beat his mom when they play Like, he just he wants to win everything he does. 152. And this season has not come anywhere close to the way they wanted it to start. Um I for great players and I don’t know this because I wasn’t but I would imagine great players expect greatness every time they step on the ice whether it’s in game in practice. So if something gets messed up in practice they probably don’t understand why you can’t do this perfectly because I can. Um to me it just I think there’s frustration. Uh the 91 drubbing last night it’s funny or a couple nights ago Leon said we needed a slap in the face. That’s what we needed. M uh teams will have bad nights and when those nights happen, you forget about it, but you don’t forget about how they respond the next time they play. And I know from my experience, I hated playing against a team that just got embarrassed because the next time they step on the ice, you expect their best. So to me, I’m not going to look so much at what happened two nights ago. To me, where the Edmonton Oilers are as a hockey club, I look at what happens tonight in this game against Columbus. If there isn’t a response, well, then you’ve got issues. So, I would expect you are going to see the best Oiler team possible tonight. And if not, I think there’ll be more questions tomorrow morning. Yeah. Uh I mean, I totally agree with that. And that Oilers team uh you know, digging into some of the numbers on them, they still create a ton. The power play is nasty. Like there some pucks are going to go in. They’re they’re going to be just fine. When you look around the Pacific, like I don’t feel any different about the Oilers. like they’re still probably the favorite. You know, Vegas is obviously very good. I mean, am I alone in thinking that the Oilers are going to sort this out here? I I think they will. I I think they and Vegas will battle out for first in the division. I know that it’s been a a really nice start for a couple other teams and and Anaheim, look, I mean, they they got a really good coach. They’re a good bunch of good young hockey players. They got a good goalie, good coach. They will compete. I just over an 82 game season. I just don’t think there’s a team in the Pacific that is better than Vegas and Edmonton. And they will have their spurs, but I don’t think they’re better than those two teams. And whichever team comes out of the Pacific will have to be beat either Edmonton or Vegas or both. I think the Oilers will be there. They’ll get healthier. They’ll figure it out. Um when you have the best two players in the world, you have the best power play in the world, you should be competitive each and every night. The thing that scares you is in 16 games they’ve won four in regulation. And of those four, one of them was against the Montreal Canadians where the referees helped. That was a poorly refereed game. The game the Oilers were badly outplayed until the refs got involved. So they have a lot more to give and it starts hopefully tonight. Yeah. And you mentioned the best player in the world who’s got five goals and is on pace for 26 Brownie. So what is he not doing? Those are under any circumstances. Those just aren’t numbers. And say say what you will. Is he a goal scorer? He’s not a goal scorer. Is he natural? Is he not natural? But 26 ain’t right for Connor on a pace. Well, no. It’s it’s funny. We have our own our podcast with Shagger and Strutddy. And at the beginning of the year, McDavid came out and said he’s going to shoot more this year. He wants to show that 60 wasn’t an accident. So then we’re predicting, okay, how many goals? the best in the world just said he’s going to score again this year. So, we’re all like is he gonna have 60s? Is he gonna have fifth mid50s? So, I think all of us are shocked that the pucks hasn’t gone in the net for him. Um he is he early in the year he turned down shots what he shouldn’t have. Um I we watched McKinnon was just here the other night and he had a couple twoon- ones and there was no thought of passing. I mean, when you got a shot like McKinnon, you go in and shoot. Yeah. I I think that maybe Connor needs to be a little bit more like that. That I mean Conor’s got an incredible wrist shot snapshot. Shoot more. Uh go into a game thinking I’m going to have 15 shots tonight. I mean he’s he’s capable of having that many if he wants to. Uh I do believe he’ll get on track offensively. I think partly goalenders have been good against him. He’s had some breakaways that he hasn’t scored on which is uncommon for him. Uh but I just think he like the entire team has been a little off and uh as you know when your best players are a little off uh your team’s going to be a little off too but I do believe MC or both Connor and Leon will get better as this moves on and maybe tonight is the night that McKinnon was having a nice year not a great year. Then the last two games got nine points. I think that’s what you’re going to see from Conor McDavid. Hopefully sooner rather than later. So JB the best player in the world needs to be more like the second best player in the world. Yeah, I like that. I like that theory. Hey, uh Rosik’s been a good ad, eh? Like I I mean, just in terms of someone else who can make plays and put the puck away, it it’s funny when they traded for him. I remember Rosik when he got traded to the Rangers and I think, “Oh, that’s a great pickup. That kid’s got skill.” But it didn’t work out. Then he then he was in Columbus and then he was in Carolina and he’s a healthy scratch in the playoffs in Carolina. I’m like, “Okay, why?” cuz I remember watching I mean this kid’s got he’s skilled. Um I guess sometimes you wake up with an opportunity realizing maybe this is your last one, right? And you start to put things together. He’s been very good. The the one thing that is really helped him have success. When you play with Connor andor Leon, most players as soon as they go with one of those two guys, the first thought is get them the puck. I’ve got the puck. I’m look. Where’s Leon? I’ve got the puck. Where’s Connor? Ross Levik hasn’t. He’s got the puck. He’s looking for the best play. And sometimes he’s looked off Leon and found someone else which he’s got the confidence to do that and he’s got the skill set that when he makes that decision it’s good enough. Ros Levik has been very good for the Oilers. Now does he have the consistency? I don’t know because there’s got to be something that he’s on his fifth team here already. But so far he has probably been over the last whatever games he’s been here, he’s been their most consistent player. So, I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing, but he has been very, very good playing with Leon Dry Settle. Well, we’ll uh we’ll keep a close eye on the scoreboard for those of us that are going down to the Hockey Hall of Fame tonight over uh the Oilers tonight against Columbus. But, uh we’ll see how we feel uh tomorrow tomorrow on on our national show. Brownie, great stuff as always, man. Always appreciate your time. Thanks for doing this. Thanks, guys. Thanks, Brownie. Appreciate it. Rob Brown. Nothing like a high bar from a guy who’s like, you know, I wasn’t a great player. Got like 45 goals in a year or something. Pretty great player. I just talk about the Oilers. Like I’ve said before, I’m just so sick of this little song and dance we have to do every year. Well, we got to do the slow start thing every year. It’s like, yeah, and guess what? He’s probably right. Everything he said, they’re they’re probably gonna figure it out, but we don’t get to be mad at it because they’re going to be good again. It’s like, just be good for the start. Is there any way you could quickly look at their record last year? And it is was their record better now than it was last year or the year before because this is Yeah. No, you can do the exact date consecutive. One sec. How many How many bad starts in a row are we at now? November 10th last year. The Edmonton Oilers. Worse, I bet. No, I think better. Uh we’re 77 and one. I believe they are 77 and one. No, I think they’re six and four. Yeah. So they’re 500 just like last year. Exactly the same. Yeah. That that went to a Stanley Cup final. Yeah. Okay. And they’re just gonna do the same thing. But we don’t get to talk about it. We can’t be like, “Oh, the Oilers are no good.” Because they are good, but they don’t play good. It’s really annoying. So if we go back, hold on. If we go back two years, they were 29 and one. They’re put That’s when 291, that’s when uh Woodcraft got fired and they brought in Knoblock, right? Right. Like they also went to the cup final that year. Yeah. Game seven of the final. Yeah. So, we’re not going to go ahead and panic on the old oil. Did I was cutting the audio? Did you guys play the knob block goalending thing with Brownie? Do you guys want to play it? I do. I absolutely want to uh do it because there’s a couple different knobblock clips from after the game on against the uh Avalanche. Uh one that Oh, one that includes intro music now, I guess. one that includes the reporter’s question and his answer and then one that is similar to that a shorter one on goalend you want to start with just how he’s feeling overall sure clip one from knob block Derek so we’re 20% of the way during the season and I feel as if after several games this season even a couple wins we’ve sort of been asking you about well you know isn’t there more to give is can’t the team be more thorough like do you feel there’s still a lot more to give and what’s going to get them to that point? Absolutely. There’s lots and I think we’ve been always um probably a little overconfident that things will work out and we’ve um but they will. You know, this team’s been in trying times several times over the years, and they’ve always worked it out. Um, just because they’ve found a way to play better, step up. Um, and I think right now, in the last couple weeks, I’ve seen, um, we’ve been just kind of waiting for that moment to happen. And I think tonight would be uh I definitely hope this is rock bottom for us. I hope this wakes up a lot of guys and we understand that we’ve got a lot of um growing to do to become a good hockey team like our expectations are for ourselves. Do you think there’s any chance that they that they don’t? I I think the problem when you’re bad 20% into the season is that what if something then goes wrong? McDavid gets hurt and misses two months or you know you leave yourself exposed. 30 teams that can say the same thing. Well, totally. But that’s it. Like if you play with fire then you can go, oh well this happened and it killed us rather than just being good when you’re healthy which they’ve been mostly some the odds against a third consecutive bad start like this ending up being a Stanley Cup final. Like come on. You know that that in itself if you did the odds of them at at their record now to still end up in the you’ll be like that’s almost like striking lightning now. It just doesn’t happen this way. It’s not supposed to happen this way. The element of physicality we talked about with Brownie there. No Perry, no Kane, no Arvdson, no Brown. And you replace it with Seavoi and Howard and Majapane and Rosavik. Look what Cory Perry’s doing right now. Yeah, he’s got more goals than all their new guys combined, but just he’s he’s just a gamer at the end of the day. He’s just a gamer. Stop. Why did they not keep him? What was it? Money, I guess. Yeah, money. Cuz he was a pretty necessary element for them. I thought Did he get three or He’s got seven snipes in 10 games. I’m just quickly checking. Tell me how much money he makes in uh Sam, are you on it? Yeah, I am. signed a one-year Yeah. $2 million contract. Ah, for the Which includes which includes an additional $2 million in performance. Yes. But the AAV is 2 million. So it’s like4 million. Yeah. But two against the cap, I guess. Yes. Just so tight, right? Like Yeah. But I mean, you got you dig a couple out of the couch cushions to maybe keep Cory Perry around. I don’t know. It’s just he was decent in the playoffs if I recall for we just spent a good portion in our first hour talking about sometimes guys just lose the edge no matter what. They can talk about it all you want and it’s still not there when you need it and this guy’s he plays the game still like he’s freaking 21. What an admirable trait it is in hockey to just be someone who’s just still cares just wants to win every time they’re on the ice. Yeah. kind of like us. Yip had that. Oh boy. Now, Knoblock was also asked about Skinner. Yep. On whether or not the team still has confidence in him. Did you get that clip? Well, you had that clip. Finals, of course. Is this team losing some belief here when it comes to the goalending situation? I I don’t believe so. Wow. Oh man. I don’t believe so. Not all at once. I I don’t believe so. Uh drop, please. Imagine Skinner watching or listening to that. Yeah. See the exact second again. We’re doing this and it’s like Yeah. And they’re going to go on a 16 game. How about Rob Brown though? He’s the only guy I’ve ever heard be like, “Yeah, I think it’s going to be Skinner and Skinner’s the guy.” That’s just the way it’s going to be. Gregor just says that too all the time, but like I just read the article. LeBron had a good article in potential team Canada goalies or whatever. Well, just the word Stuart Skinner being in there is like what does this guy have on people? I love the guy. So, but the goalending does not speak to any of this. Now, by the way, Jack, my my two thoughts on this. My give me Bennington 10 times out of 10. You don’t watch the game very well. My two thoughts on N block talking about Skinner is he’s done. He’s they’ll never recover off of that. Sorry. You’re saying that that’s what you just heard. I’m saying that if if I’m listening like Skinner and I hear a coach uh uh uh I’m done. He went full, right? How how are you supposed to come back to work every day and feel like this guy is is backing you or the team’s backing you like you you you you’re going to practice now until things dramatically change maybe with a a winning streak or you know the next few games and you can change that energy around. It’s got to be a horrible feeling going to the rink like you’re a man on an island right now. Like, yeah, no book should have just fibbed or whatever, but like, of course, we believe in him. But, but doesn’t he also want to put pressure on this? He’s doing it. Yeah, he’s doing it. Well, I think he’s on notice now that it’s like, you know, I think so. You know, I think so. To sort this out or something. Yeah, we’re on we’re on a Connor Ingram countdown here now. Yeah. Right. Because is he playing in the minor? Like, I feel like he’s pro. Anyway, now would Skinner’s experience the last few years of people bailing on him or jumping on his bandwagon or jumping off? Would he just or this would just be part of the course for him? This is this is the Bennington thing with Team Canada where it’s like we’ve seen him do it when it counts, so no one’s too worried, you know, like we just we he’ll figure it out. He’s just the worst goalie in the league. It’s fine. His stats in playoffs last few years. Yeah, they they could have used a better one. Uh, but he has had some great stretches. He owns the Dallas Stars. Uh, game time. Game time. It’s game time presented by Bet 365. Visit the app for latest odds and see why it’s ever ordinary at Bet 365, most 19 plus Ontario only. They are not the favorite to make it to the final uh from the Easter from the Western Conference. The Colorado Avalanche are a clear favorite, plus 275 right now to win the Western Conference and represent them in the Stanley Cup final. Vegas ahead of them at plus 400. And then the Edmonton Oilers come in at third at plus 425. So there’s two teams be like, well, we can’t get ahead Edmonton. Dallas is plus 500. Well, I mean, why would they be? They just beat the brakes off them every time they play them in the playoffs. So it’s like, I don’t know. And then it goes down the list. The Stars are plus six. Oh, plus 600. Jets are nine to1. Mammoth 13 to1. Kings 13 to1. Docs 16 to1, Wild 22 to1, Conucks 30 to1. What do you make of this team? They look very good. They’ve won seven in a row now. To me, they’re flying around. That Leo Carlson at that size putting up points like he is is like, this is interesting. Who do you think the favorite to make to represent the Eastern Conference is in the in the final? Uh, I’ll go off the board. Is it not Carolina? It’s Carolina. Yeah. Carolina at plus 340. New Jersey at plus 42. And who’s their goalie? Who’s their goalie this weekend? Uh Brandon, the guy that the guy that’s I rented for the zigzags tonight. Oh my goodness. Where did he come from? Uh needs to go backward. Listen, I’m sure he’s a great guy, but I thought the goals that went in, he looked pretty rough. And and how many times you fall down? Uh the Panthers are plus 475. You could do worse than that bet. Uh Tampa 6 to1, Leafs 7 to1. That is You want to light some money on fire bet on that one? Uh, Canadians 850 to uh plus 850, cap 16 to1, Ottawa 17 to1, Rangers 18 to1, blah blah blah. Down the list they go. So that’s interesting to me. Uh, that was game time by bet 365. Visit the app for latest odds and see why it’s ever ordinary. Bet 365 M plus on only. Please play responsible. The one the one thing that I think Leaf fans and Oiler fans can also look at too is just the fact that everybody’s just clumped in here, right? Get a win tonight. They’re in a playoff spot that just nobody’s good, right? Yeah. Like you don’t know like Seattle right now. If you’re the Oilers looking up, you’re wondering, you know, San Jose Sharks. And do you know that 28% or more than 28% of games this year have gone to overtime? The most ever in NHL history by good distance. Incentivize it not to happen. Make it three points in regulation. Totally. Why are we waiting so long? Push for that extra point. You mentioned Seattle. I was I was flicking back and forth with Seattle Dallas last night. Matt Murray in net for the the Kraken. Still Matt Murray in there. Biggest chest protector in league history. It can’t be regulation. Elbow pads inside his Anyway, let’s go. Matt Murray does that. Three on three is unwatchable for me. I Hey, I was at the attack nights game on Saturday at the L. Shots a piece. I would tell you that that threeon three was not unwatchable. Coaches haven’t got to the junior level yet. It’s awesome. Okay, we’ll take a quick break. When we return, still more to go around the National Hockey League. Connor Baddard Mhm. all of a sudden making some serious noise. Celebrini. Also in Philly, did the captain call out one of his young players? We did. Well, it sounds like Yes, cuz I haven’t heard the clip yet. But, and we got to talk about the Team Canada jerseys. And for Sammy, the team Canada jerseys. Nope, we did. Wow. We did on stage with Ryan Gatslaugh, but we didn’t. Still some meat on the bone on the Real Kipper and Born Show. Back after these words. Reminder this hour real Kipper and Bourne brought to you by Bet 365. Nick Giprios Justin Bourne MVP from the Eric Lindros Easter Seals skate Sammy McKe. Thanks man. game-winning goal with two and a half minutes to go backhand. I do love that our guy Brian Leech, who does a lot of tweeting to the show, grabbed the gift of McKe falling with his skate guards on. Oh, he did. Did it live in infamy forever? That that exists now out there. Hey Sammy. Yes, you’re a celebrity now, man. That’s just with the territory. Yep, for sure. Totally. You love it, eh? No, I don’t. I hate it actually. No, I just hate that you talk about it. That’s what I hate. interesting comments from the Philadelphia Flyer captain Sean Couture um on Mishkov who uh who’s you know little snake bitten not not able to put the puck in the net and uh I don’t know if I don’t know if this is a calling out or not you are we going to have a listen first Sammy yes let’s listen to it yeah he’s a great goal scorer and and has a lot of skill um I think you just got to find a way to contribute ute to to helping the team win in other ways when when you’re struggling. You’re not always going to be scoring goals every game. So, um you know, I thought he’s I’ve seen improvement in the way he’s uh you know, not cheating as much and and being on the right side of pucks and um you know, I’m sure it’s uh it’s a little different for him, but um you know, if he sticks to playing, you know, more the right way, um I think it’s going to be better for the the team overall. Have you sensed a weight off his shoulders a little bit in after scoring that goal in Nashville and then tonight as well? I think so. I think you can tell tonight he was uh trying to make a lot of plays with the puck, holding on to the puck. Um so yeah, I think he’s definitely, you know, feeling good about himself. I didn’t have a problem with any of that. I loved it all. Yeah. Do you think some people think that he called him out? Well, he did. Yeah. to a certain extent, but he was smart enough to do it without stripping him down. He’s the captain of the team. Like I I would kill Matthew for Matthew to say something like that. Like it’s just he’s the captain. It’s a young rookie player on the team. Constructive criticism, which he’s probably already said to him privately. I zero problem with it. Loved it. actually curious about the season Meichov is having and it’s very possible that he gets it sorted out and it’s no big deal but like if I’m not mistaken like it was the Bedard draft year right and it was kind of like Mechov or Baddard which one’s going to be better but you you weren’t sure if you could get him out of Russia so he slipped to that was the issue right but it like talent-wise and stuff it was kind of like yes yeah you’re right which one but it’s more about Russia now it’s like oh he’s got eight points in 16 games and the captain doesn’t think he’s great and he apparent apparently came into camp like 20 lbs overweight or something crazy like it. Well, that’s now like the second time that we’ve heard about issues in practice and the habits because Rick Tocket did the same thing, right, with on our show earlier, right? So, it’s a real sore spot. Yeah. You know, I don’t know how much is this just like we grew up around Canadian hockey and North American hockey. And it’s a lot of you were never bigger than your team. You fall in line. You do the things. You’re humble. You’re, you know, you do all these team team things. And that just becomes like Sean Couturier the way he knows the game. Yeah. You know, and maybe that’s not the same. You know what’s really hurt the NHL the last few years? taking away quality practice time. I I don’t ever recall hearing teams having little to no practice time anymore to just get some of the fundamentals back during the season. And then we’re into this load management. And then we got these doctors who think that they know how to win a Stanley Cup and all of it and sleep and who goes where and who takes the day off. I’m like like the Leafs having a day off today. It’s just insane. It’s like really. Yeah. Well, because it’s probably mandated by the Leaf. Why Why are we surprised when we hear a young kid not really that great at practice? Well, guess what? He’s got that much to practice on. They don’t practice. They don’t practice. We’re talking about practice. A very good question is, you know, is what’s best for the players bodies the same as what’s best for your team’s chances of winning the Stanley Cup? Because I think there’s a lot of development in this whole thing that like sleep doctors we’ve talked about and rest is a weapon and all these sort of things and it’s like all that’s great. It really helps to know where to stand on the ice and sometimes if your legs are a little more tired, knowing where to be is better than having perfectly fresh legs, right? So internal debate we had this I just I do remember competing in practice and feeling the pressure to compete in practice and not letting my guard down. So if there was a fight in the if there was a fight in a corner with a defenseman on a one-on-one loose puck battle, I got to come out with a puck. I I’m I’m stressed in that drill because for a split second I got 18 of my teammates watching. I’ve got four coaches and whoever else is up in the stands watching and the pressure not just for you but making that guy better. I I’ll I’ll I’ll trip you. I’ll spear you. I’ll punch you in the head, but I ain’t losing this battle clean. And I don’t I don’t think they they do that anymore. Maybe they do and I’m not aware of it. But I I my guess is it’s a lot less a couple times than than when we played probably 15 20 years ago. I remember being with Sheldon Keefe and the Marlies and getting into like, you know, February, March time of year and just being like, we need as much rest as possible for the playoffs. However, we need to show them this thing or this system or this whatever and and having that debate about what’s best for these guys. But by February or March, those type of practices, the battle ones, the compete ones, those are gone. You don’t want to hurt your own guys. You don’t want to, you know, all those sort of things, right? That’s a safety. Good fight in practice. Never really hurt a team long. I was good for a couple fights in practice. Were you a fighter in practice? Yeah, I had a few. I think I had do that and not fight in a game. I Well, I fought like once a year in a game or something when I had to. But not for the right reasons. For the wrong reason. You’re right. For the wrong reasons. But usually in practice it was like, you know, the guy, you’re sick of his whatever. It’s like I don’t need to take he owes you money. I don’t need to take a slash in front of my own net during practice. You know, those sort of things. Hey, uh found out he’s dating the same girl animosity. Looking at the NHL’s leading scores, uh very interesting stuff here. McKinnon shocking leading the league in scoring. Connor Baddard in second with 25 points. Seven in the last two games. Leo Carlson in tied for second with 25 points. Mlin Celibbrini in fourth with 24 points. William Knander in fifth with 23. Young kids now taking next steps. Yeah. Do you want to hear Brad Mar Brad Brad Marshian is just like the oracle now of the NHL. He just talks about everything and everybody want to listen. But listen to this clip he had about celebrating. I love this clip. You know, he’s a new hot thing. You know, you hear a lot about him. He’s playing incredible hockey right now. Uh he’s obviously very skilled, but what I really like about his game is is just the intensity. He’s a dog and uh you know, he hounds the pocks hard. He’s not shy. Um you know, going to corners or go to the front of the net. Um you know, so you know, he’s not one of those guys that waits for the power play. He he he plays all night long. So, he’s going to be, you know, one of the best for a very long time. Um, which makes it tough to play against, but, you know, he showed why he’s he’s a extremely um talented player. He plays all night long. He’s got an engine. That That’s a good line. Plays all night long. Um teammates got the edge. Teammates, those two and Milan Cortina or Cortina Milan. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Teammates. I don’t think the Florida Panthers thought in what 16 games that Brad Marian would be their best player in every respect basically. Yeah. Well, they probably didn’t think that Barov wasn’t going to play. I know. They’re battling. No question. But there’s still some a little underachieving going on with the Stanley Cup champions. Absolutely. So, you talk about those kids and all of them kind of taking a step and becoming important, which is good for the league. Let me ask you about staying power. Which team, Anaheim or Montreal, is more likely to be there at playoff time in a good spot? Anaheim. Yeah. Yeah. Wow. Really? I like them a lot. I’ve watched a few of their games. They fly around. Good players, young, great coach. I don’t know. I just kind of believe in them. Crider Carlson, Troy Terry’s a fun line. Cutter Goce leading the NHL in shots. Big boy. Yeah, big boy. Just like Carlson. Flyers gave up on that. They couldn’t make it work. Give up. I think he said bye-bye. Jackson Lome stud that Becket Senaki is really big. Yeah, he’s lighting it up too. Big Ashwa General shout out. They’re a big team. Big heavy team. Lauren Ross Johnson. Geez, they are big. Trouba. Trouba’s been unbelievable this year. Like he’s had a real turnaround this year. He’s Chris Krider. They love him. Yeah. How can they not? All he’s huge. He skates fast. He goes to the net. He finishes. Well, Rangers, they scoring bunches, so they don’t need it. The Leafs missed out on him, Sammy. Yeah. Oh, well done after him. Missed out on a lot of things. Hey, before we go, we talked about this on Friday. How scar or on Thursday how scared I was about the team Canada jersey release. Okay. So, what’s what happened? Just did it it. If you’re watching on Sports Plus, you’re seeing what we just like is that even worse than you thought. Oh, I mean, so white jersey passible. Although the stripes don’t go all the way around and they’re two different colors. The different color stripes is bizarre. But anyway, what’s what’s with the black now? The top two. I think that when you’re designing a jersey that is going to be worn by so many people and is like it’s a whole nation, like can we have the regular person test where you like go to like a a sports bar or go to somewhere where like, you know, a rink where there’s like hockey players around and you hold up these jerseys and you’re like, “What do you think of this?” And everyone would have been like, “No, don’t do that. It is horrible.” No, it’s not that bad. It is so bad. I think the youngs would think it’s cool. No. Okay. If you think it’s cool, please tweet me or DM me or whatever. They just all these like futur like they think it’s like we got to be futuristic. We got to be got to get something new out there. Less is always more with jerseys. And I don’t know why they think they have to have a Star Wars leaf to make it look cool. It’s horrible. International colors are red and white. Yes. If you want to have a little black trim, totally fine with it. Little gold here like they did the Did your mom make you wear stuff that you hated when you were a kid? No. I listen, I’ve always had impeccable fashion sense as you can see on this show. Like hat and hoodie is what I go to. But like the nicest jerseys across any sport are the simple ones that are just Oh, hello. that just let you kind of that you just kind of let the like let the colors do the talking. Canada’s a beautiful colors. Red and white with a couple stripes and a beautiful classic leaf. Not that hard. Not that hard. If they don’t bring gold, is that the start of what went wrong? They look like the guy who did Monster Energy cans got the job to design them. That jersey has white numbers on it. Which one? The red and the black one have white numbers on it. Is that right? Yes. There’s no white anywhere else. Really? Correct. Just make the like. Okay. Why? It makes me so mad. Just ask somebody. Why even go, Sammy? They’re so bad. Ball gown. We’re not rocking the ball. Just let somebody else make a decision. Like just take it to a normal person. They are so bad. They’re so bad. Sydney Crosby has to put on that jersey. I’m like, “Oh, poor guy.” I wonder if they like wear the white one, have some success, and just white. I really hope that happens. And it would look better with gold around the neck. Our thanks to Rob Brown from Ched covering the Edmonton Oilers. Four games on tap, including those Oilers against Columbus where many people feel like must win after being humil humiliated on the weekend. Yeah, buzzsaw. I’m off to the high hall of fame. Are you guys coming? Very cool. Uh, no. Zigzag’s got a big game. You got to sort out a sock drawer. And um got to water my plants. Sammy’s got to water his plants. All right, that’s it for us. Once again, we’ve solved nothing in two hours, but we’ll be back tomorrow to give it another crack at it. Real Kipper and Born Show. Steve Alicette
Nick Kypreos, Justin Bourne and Sam McKee discuss the Toronto Maple Leafs recent defensive struggles, Craig Berube’s impact and ask the question of whether or not their playoffs hopes could be in real danger. Later, ex-NHLer Rob Brown joins the show to discuss the similarly-struggling Edmonton Oilers, Connor McDavid and Evan Bouchard’s tense exchange at practice and more.

Wonder what the Marner harassers are thinking now. Karma.
Mathews is Alexe Yashin, wants to go to. New York get out of Dodge fish bowl, it has never been about the team
And Hayes from the Overdrive panel just a few days ago was calling the leafs a wagon, lmao
How does someone like Kypreos have a job in mass media. Hope for the rest of us for sure.
Guys….34 has got to go. He is not a good fit for Toronto. He would most likely do well in California. Trade him now and get something while you can.
Do we care?
Yes they could easily miss the playoffs! WTH is going on !?!? I am stumped
18 wheeler đ heading towards the climb up and turning with the roadâŠâŠ
Loved the highlights! Thanks for all the pods!
The jerseys suck, especially the ones with black.
The black jersey is sick
Unless this team gets better goaltending, improves their horrific defensive play they will miss the playoffs by a mile.
Tavares and nylander have been awesome . Matthews needs to get going .
Listen to me bro pre season this team ainât post nothing
Matthew needs to get surgery . He will not get to the same player he was a few years ago if he doesnât.
When the leafs forced Marner out of town I was the first anywhere to say they will miss the playoffs next year. I'm looking good so far. Marner was the whole team along with JT.
Hard disagree with you Sam. I love the jerseys and find them to be very simple in design which I prefer. In high res photos the textured leaf looks busy but in person without the fancy lighting and while moving on the ice, it'll look super clean. This is one of the cleanest jerseys with a subtle modern touch.
The Leafs could go on a winning streak and take first place and make Kyper wipe the egg off his face. They haven't had a full roster yet and haven't started playing that well yet and are still only 5 pts out of first.
60% chance they miss
Leafs a choker will never ever win Stanley cup in my lifetime maybe in another 100 years
Sammy is right, those jerseys are horrible.
What about a weird idea….Tavares with Mathews? I know they are both centers, but Tavares can play with anybody, could Mathews take wing, try Tavares center, and bring Roy or Laughton up to line 2? Didn't Laughton and Nylander have a moment last year? I never hear it proposed as Mathews and Tavares are your top 2 C, but worth a shot… you have like 8 C's, give it a shuffle. If anyone can get Mathews setup or tip his shot in, it is Tavares
Just don't feel the fire from the leafs these days… in fact, when i think about it, i never have felt the fire with this core group… it has always been a toxic group emotionally, or at least looks like that from the outside…
Just watched Mcdavid win the game against the sharks… i suppose Matthews did that against the penguins but that's the only time I've ever seen that… if it was more of a regular thing, then this team might be playing differently… but something is off , it's not the skill it's something more foundational…
who GAS…??
Leafs are not doing well
ITS MATTHEWS
HES DONE
HE SETS THE WRONG TONE FOR THE ENTIRE TEAM â HES A SMUG SMARTASS KNOWITALL AND IS BRINGING THE TEAM DOWN WITH HIM
HES THE MAN THERE, HE SETS THE TONE AND THE CULTURE AND WE ALL KNOW THE KIND OF VIBES THAT GUY BRINGS TO THE TEAM
HEARTLESS!!!
The TO media meltdown is well underway đ
No more Mitch
Blame Dubas and shanny for signing clowns to big contracts when they havenât won a thing
I'm 56. The leafs have sucked for my entire life. They will suck for the rest of my life. They will continue to suck after I'm gone.
I'm with Sammy on this one. The new Canadian jerseys are atrocious.
Good for you guys on your charity fundraiser!!! Well done gents.
Leafs conversation is the same every year in the fall they cheat for offense and don't defend then the media says they can't defend and to trade for a D man then in the spring playoffs come they tighten up defensively and can't score when it matters most and then the media says they need a top 6 forward crazy groundhog day for the last ten years insane
Once again you can feel the discomfort and anxiety among the fans and Toronto media , when they watch the performance of this team .
Some players have left and some new ones joined in, but….the same problems occur. Even this experienced coach , ' Chief' , can't make them play old school defensive hockey. He is an old school coach.
And the captain problems has been there for ages. Well, its not easy to be leader among the most critical fans and most critical hockey audience in hockey world. The Toronto media is ruthless too. No mercy.
The minimum goal for Leafs now is to get into play offs. Its now more difficult than last year. Bruins are better, Canadian are better, Red wings are better, Senators are better, only Sabres are the same.
Lightning and Florida are in same division too. They Will get in, even if not started well. Like Leafs.
Yes.They will miss the playoffs.
The top 2 jerseys, with the black – NO! Just stick with the Red and White, and make the stripes go all the way around the jersey – cos they look weird at the moment.
When the captain doesnt show urgency on the ice, on the bench, in the locker room during intermissions, it will have a trickle down effect. Why should the depth players play with urgency and risk if their "star" players, including their captain doesnt show the same? Being lazy on ice and collecting cookies in big scoring games padding stats is all this core group will ever want. Winning comes second to the big boys. the same core, minus marner that has got 2 coaches fired previous to Berube
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the LEAFS are the only Original Six team without Norris Trophy.
It's silly to list of Norris winners here, but even back in the '80s, when Paul Coffey was known as 40-goals defender,
Toronto fans were probably excited about ''How Borje Salming, weak European, had adapted so well to the NHL's brawling culture!''.
The fanbase's mindset is also stuck in 1967, so they'll never be able to keep up.
Cherishing the past is a good thing, but isn't it the Toronto fanbase that clings to it and rejects the present?
Cale Maker, Quinn Hughes, and Lane Hutson, new types of highly mobile, speedy defenders, are already leading the way.
On the other hand, aren't LEAFS just now finally able to emulate the big-hit hockey of the BOS and LAK of the 2010s?
People take sports too seriously, who cares except some kids and the 20 somethings.
The players are doing what Bérubé asks of them.
I dunno, I havenât like much of anything BĂ©rubĂ© has had the team do since he came in. I think blaming this on the players would be a mistake. No player decided on their own to wait at centre ice on an island like in that one example you showed⊠that is the coach. Who is lining the team up so they have no help?
Love the show guys
Matthews doesn't like getting tired or hit. Just skating around for the shift waiting to pick off a goal is good enough for him. Any dude who needs to see a European holistic doctor (like last season) isn't NHL stuff.
Letâs be honest, the âAutobahnâ of a neutral zone (Mathewsâ own quote after Buffalo losses last season), where thereâs a huge gap for the opponent to cruise through, that problem was there all along but now they lack at least 2 âboringâ players who where strong on pucks and kept puck possession but hardly scored (KĂ€mpf and Holmberg) and some D-sense by Marner. Now the situation has just gone from âoops, the neutral zone problemsâ to yikes đ±! the D is burned out as the N zone problems go straight to the D and stay there until itâs in our net. Berube and Co. should know this and address this with a plan, not just screaming the same stuff over and over. Players are just a bunch of guys, they go tone deaf.
⊠anyway
GO HABS GO
Great show boys
Teach the Blue Jays to skate. At least theyâre a team with some intestinal fortitude.
