The New Orleans Saints are 1 and8 traveling to the scene of the crime uh Carolina on Sunday where the Saints have lost three of their last four in Carolina in Charlotte and of course was the last place that Dennis Allen coached a football game for the New Orleans Saints. And so now the Saints get an opportunity to treat Carolina kind of as a bit of a measuring stick to see where they were versus where they’re going. Less about where they are. As you can see, this team is absolutely embracing its rebuild or it’s a retool, whatever is the appropriate phrase for it. And a big part of that rebuild is making sure that they have the right quarterback at the helm. And so now Tyler Shuck gets his second start of his career going up against a pretty favorable matchup at the Carolina Panthers. Although Carolina has some talented players that will provide some tests over on that defensive side. JC Horn, Derek Brown, and the interior who was added to the injury report on Thursday with an elbow injury. something to watch going into today’s injury report later on. But I wanted to highlight some of the things that Tyler Shuck did well against the Rams, a premier team and an elite defense, and then take a look at some of the things that he needs to work on or, you know, that the team might be looking to improve, let me say it that way, uh, going up against Carolina and just so that we continue to kind of track the progress because this is now what the Saints season is all about. Saints season is all about evaluation and the Saints season is all about finding out whether or not it’s got its next quarterback or if they need to address that in the draft or this off seasonason. So, let’s highlight some of the things that went well for Tyler Shuck and then we’ll look at some of the things that maybe we’re keeping an eye out on to see how he performs up against the Carolina Panthers. He completed 78% of his passes when he was kept clean according to Pro Football Focus. I have one disagreement with one of their numbers. They said that he was 0 and5 under pressure. Uh but he also had that play to where he was pressured, stepped out of the pocket, stepped up, and then delivered to Chris Alb. And so that’s one 27 yard pass, one completion that I would say was under pressure. And so I would give him the benefit of the doubt on that one. But clearly still a big time split between how he performs when he’s kept clean and how he performs when he’s under pressure. That was a big part of his evaluation coming out of college. we, you know, his first NFL start, first ever NFL start, didn’t show a lot of strides in that area, uh, but was also going up against a pair of really, really good pass rushers, a very good defensive line, a very good defense, and again, in his first NFL start. So, something he did well was deliver and find ways to find the right receivers, made a lot of good decisions despite the fourth down interception, which, yes, was a fourth down throw, but was also not a good throw. didn’t really give Rashid Shahed an opportunity to fight for anything in that play. That was also under pressure. But beyond that, you saw good decision-m, you saw good playmaking ability, you saw good distribution of the football, and you saw good ball placement that allowed receivers to go out there and pick up some additional yards as well. The touchdown to Jawan Johnson was on the third read of that progression. So, you’re seeing a true progression uh for the quarterback as well. So, all of those things worked well. win kept clean, not so great when under pressure. We’ll see and continue to keep tabs on that as a part of what we’re looking for when it comes to Tyler Shuck taking his next steps. We watched Spencer Rattler make a huge leap from year 1 to year two, managing pressure. Let’s see how much Kell Moore’s system as Tyler Shuck gets more comfortable in it helps him do the same. Uh he generated three 20 plus yard passing plays in this game. Finding those not just from catch and run opportunities but finding those completions down the field. Did a really good job connecting on those corner routes. Attacked cover three that way super well. That’s going to be important here in just a moment. Also found opportunities in the seams downfield as well. So really liked seeing all that. his 7.3 yards per attempt was the third highest game for the Saints so far this season. And that included uh really a recent stretch of games that included games in like week five and week six where we saw that number really tick up. And so we’re watching Kell Moore’s offense get a little bit more uh of the chunk plays pick up in terms of larger averages, things like that. uh he was sacked only once and that was the second time this season that a Saints quarterback has been sacked only one time. The third time for one or less, right? Cuz there was there were two games where quarterbacks were sacked once and in one game where a quarterback was not sacked at all. Now, he only played 40 offensive plays and the Saints offense was on the on the field only for 16 minutes. So, that’s definitely worth keeping in consideration there. So that’s more of a trend that you probably want to see continue more than it is something you want to hang a hat on at this point. And he completed eight of his 12 passes for 82 yards and an interception against cover three in particular. This is where he was most effective and some of those corner routes helped him find that good decision making against cover three. We highlighted cover three as a big thing for him going into this game and it was where he was at his most successful. Even though it’s not where he threw the touchdown and even though it is where he threw the interception, still something that you look at across the board that that was the coverage that he felt most comfortable attacking and found the most success attacking completing eight of those 12 passes. Uh the reason why that’s important is because Carolina played cover three the most. Not not the most in the league, but cover three is their most utilized coverage deployment, right? right? This most utilized coverage scheme. And so at 44% of their defensive time with another 15% going cover six, which is a little bit of a has some similarities to cover three in that it’s still three deep defenders. It just looks different on one half of the field. That’s a pretty good matchup for uh Tyler Shuck going into this game up against the Carolina Panthers. So definitely the things that you want to see him improve upon or that you want to see the team continue to make strides with him on is going to be his performance under pressure. That was always going to be a big part of the conversation. And then I’ll highlight his throwing to the left side of the field as well. Had 11 of his passes over to the left side. All of them were inside 20 yards. Did throw a touchdown there to Jawan Johnson, but also threw the interception over on that side. Again, it’s a fourth down interception, but not the greatest throw either. but a lot more compact in the left side on the left side of the field and a little bit of a lower success rate on the left side of the field than the right side of the field in terms of splitting the hashes. And so just something to watch. Does he continue to gravitate to his right side downfield or can he mix and marry the the the two halves of the field together so that it’s not becoming a threat only to half of the field. So those would be the two two other things that I think you’re looking at to see how it continues to improve for Tyler Shuck. But a big week ahead for Tyler Shuck to go from an elite defense to an okay defense. Still a good defense, but an okay defense and see where what his performance looks like in that case. Coming up next, a big piece in that conversation is going to be wide receiver Devon Vle who headlines our players to watch because he’s got a massive opportunity ahead of him. Finally, we got all that coming up for you as we continue on with today’s episode of Lockdown Saints, part of Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. I got five players to watch going into this game up against the Carolina Panthers with wide receiver Devon Vele being the biggest and most notable. And I mean, he’s he’s probably one of the biggest on here physically as well at 6’5. The 6’5 wide receiver. Looks like he’s finally going to get a big time opportunity here for the Saints to kind of see how he fits in to this offense. The Saints traded a fourth round pick and a seventh round pick for next year in order to get him in the preseason and have not gotten him involved in the offense. Meanwhile, Luke Forner, who was traded for around the same time, is already a starter now and has been for several weeks behind after that Eric McCoy injury. And then other players that were added later on in the process have all kind of found ways to contribute, draft picks, all those other things. And so for and and late free agency picks as well. And so for Devon Vele, this feels like a long time coming for him. And I’m sure a long time coming literally for him. Like he has to be excited about this opportunity as well. It stinks anytime that one of your most explosive players and a great teammate like Rasheed Jahed ends up getting traded away. But every player will acknowledge when there’s an opportunity that opens up ahead of him. And that is what has happened here for Devon Vele. Now, head coach Kellen Moore did say that it’s not just going to be Vale that’s stepping into those Rashid Jahed snaps in terms of the physical number of snaps that Rashid Ji plays, which is quite a bit. Um, but that Brandon Cooks and Mason Tipton will help to contribute there as well. That’s not surprising. Mason Tipton has a lot of deep speed and he’s somebody that um that uh uh Tyler Shuck has a lot of connection with already, right? Tyler Shuck connected with uh Mason Typton in the preseason and one of those really good performances that he had up against the Los Angeles Chargers at the time. And so looking at the opportunity for all of those guys is absolutely worth it. But it feels like Mason Typton, excuse me, but it feels like Devon Vele is kind of the headline behind it all because everyone’s been waiting to see like why give up so much for this player if you’re not going to use him and now all of a sudden here’s an opportunity uh to use that player. And so I think that that becomes a big part of why we highlight Devon Vele as like oh the major benefactor in this situation because I’m sure he would like to prove why it is that a team went out and made the move for him as well. We were watching Rashid Shahid up to this point play 74% of snaps, 426 total snaps so far on the season. So that’s going to be a lot of snaps to go around assuming that the Saints play more than 40 offensive snaps like they did uh just last week up against the Los Angeles Rams. But in any case, getting that chance for Devon, getting another big body out there for a rookie quarterback, like there’s a lot of value there uh for New Orleans. So it’ll be interesting. Like Veil is a guy that you can move around. He can take snaps out of the slot as a big slot option. You can put him outside. You can put him in at the X and then let Chris Ave be the speed compliment on the flanker side or move Chris Ave inside and have Brandon Cooks on the outside, Mason Typton on the outside. There’s so many different things that you can still do with this interchangeable group of wide receivers. But Vele just adds another element to this that we’re all very, very intrigued to see and I’m sure fans are very excited to see as well. All right, so that was number one. Number two is defensive end Chase Young. Chase Young quietly, not quietly really, uh, but three sacks in the last three games. The first time in his career that he’s ever done it. It’s the most sacks that that he’s ever had in a three-game stretch. That makes sense. Um, and so now you’re looking to see, can he make it a fourth game? Can he keep this streak going up against Bryce Young and an okay offensive line? An okay offensive line. Uh the Saints defensive line doesn’t the Saints defense doesn’t provide much pressure. The uh Carolina Panthers offensive line allows a lot of pressure. And so one of those things is going to break, right? One of those things is going to be different. Saints are either going to get through or the Panthers are finally going to be evenly matched and kind of hold things off. And so you’re certainly hoping for the former rather than the latter in this situation and for Cha Shion to keep doing what it is that he’s been doing since he has come back to this lineup, which is be a very impactful and very disruptive player, not just in the passing game, but in the run game as well. Something to watch there because uh Rico Dattle dealing with an injury, but is on his way back. Uh went from not participating in practice on Wednesday to being limited yesterday. We’ll see where things are today. But meanwhile, we saw a back injury that add was added for Brian Brezie who has been developing big time as a run stopper, which was a big knock on him coming into the NFL. And so if he’s not out on the field, now he was just limited on Thursday. We’ll see about later on today, but he was but if he’s not out on the field, then obviously you’re looking at guys like Chase Young to give you some help. U and it becomes even more important for him to be impactful and disruptive in the run game as well. All right, let’s take a look at um Kool-Aid Mckenry. This is going to be a big one as well. Kool-Aid’s had, you know, some some high highs and some low lows so far this season. Brandon Staley though being very patient with him, which I think makes sense because the talent is absolutely there and talking about how close he is on some of those big plays that were made and everything. And I know that that’s really frustrating for Kool-Aid and that’s a guy that has been in the lab and working and working and working all throughout, you know, these weeks and making sure that he’s ready. He has kept his um he made some adjustments to his preparation. He told us after the Giants game, made some adjustments to his preparation going into that game. He hasn’t changed that preparation to my understanding moving forward. So, he’s just continued to grind and this could be a good matchup for him. He’s going to have some talented receivers across from him. Uh Tedo McMillan, uh uh um Xavier Legette, like there’s there’s good good pass catchers there in Carolina. And uh but you’re going up against a quarterback Bryce Young that doesn’t throw the ball much. Bryce Young’s only thrown the ball for more than 200 yards once so far this season. Uh but yet they’ve won five games. So really, it’s come down to the run game and when they need to turn to him, which is in game-winning situations, three game-winning drives already so far this season. So those are going to be big- time moments for Kool-Aid McKinstry and opposite him, Quincy Riley, and inside them uh when it comes to Alante Taylor as well, who we’ll discuss here in just a little bit. Um how about Audrey Estay though, running back finally elevated to the active roster. He told me that he has been grinding and ready and he has continued to prepare as if he’s going to be active this weekend. And if he is, I think that’s a great opportunity for New Orleans. That is a tough defensive line, particularly on the interior. Guys like Derek Brown on the interior there. Um, when you can have a biggerbodied running back that can go in there and be a thumper in the middle of that defense, wear them down, then open up opportunities around the perimeter for other running backs, I think that’s a really good situation for you. So, I’m excited to see is Audrey Estime uh elevated like well, he’s elevated. He’s on the active roster, but is he active will be the first question. And then after that, if he is active, how much does he get an opportunity to contribute and how does he uh take advantage of those opportunities? But that’s exactly what he’s doing. He’s trying to make sure he’s ready so he can take care of the opportunities if they are to be there. And then finally, Dylan Raidens stepping into a starting role again on the offensive line. Performed well at left guard in the first three games, particularly as a run blocker and contributing to the run game. That’s going to be a big factor in this one. And the Saints would like to control time of possession this week after getting completely uh outmatched in time of possession last week only 16 minutes of time of possession. The run game is going to be big and of course protecting a young quarterback. So you can see all the rest of this come together and a lot of that’s going to be around Dylan Raidens. Don’t forget Austin Richards is likely to be starting at right tackle as well as we have not seen Tesa yet dealing with that high ankle injury um on Wednesday or Thursday’s practice. So likely three depth starters on the offensive line, but all three guys that Tyler Shuck has some communication and some efforts with because of the scout team. So we’ll see how uh that ends up impacting the game. But those are five players that we’ll definitely be watching this weekend. Uh a player that we’ll be watching for the rest of the season though is quarterback Alante Taylor. After reportedly almost being traded, what it means for his future. We’re going to break all that down next. We continue on with today’s episode of Locked on Saints. Part of Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. Wrapping up today’s episode with a look at Alante Taylor who was reportedly almost traded at the trade deadline. We’ll break down what’s going on, why it didn’t happen, and a little bit of what it means for his future here in New Orleans, cuz I think his contract negotiation conversations are going to be very, very interesting to watch. Uh, assuming that the Saints don’t get that done before the end of the season here. We appreciate you very much as always for being here with us. Don’t forget, you can catch us every Monday through Friday at 10 a.m. over on the GF Coast Sports and Entertainment Network along with our friends over at Elllet Locked on LSU, locked on Pelicans, and locked on SEC as well. Well, and we’ll see you here with our live show right after the game on Sunday following the Saints game up against the Carolina Panthers for our locked on Saints squad show. So, make sure you come through for that. Always a fun time uh hearing Lance be upset about another loss uh for the New Orleans Saints. It’s always good. It’s always fun. He’s always awesome. Uh all right, so as we take a look at this Alante Taylor situation, so let me start off with what we know, right? And what’s been reported. Therefore, let me actually phrase it this way. What we believe, right? So, what we believe is that there was a potential deal in place or that there were conversations that were had with the Indianapolis Colts about potentially dealing Taylor to the Indianapolis Colts for some quote early day three pick, a fourthrounder or a fifth, that kind of a situation. Probably a fourth is what you’re going to be looking for for a guy like uh Alante. And so the Colts and the Saints were in that conversation and it sounds like from the Colts perspective that was the fallback trade if the sauce gardener trade hadn’t happened. Now that’s just what I’ve heard. That doesn’t that’s just again it’s what we believe but different people could say different things. I don’t know. Right. So it in one way or another there were two trades lined up by the Indianapolis Colts and the Colts logically went with Sauce Gardner. Even though it cost her two first round picks, they made the right move. I think that was a fantastic move by uh Indianapolis, but that’s for there’s locked on cults for that. Jake and Zach will talk about that. Uh but for the Saints, what that means is that Alante Taylor is still here. And so with that being the case, it creates this interesting thing, uh, this sort of interesting dynamic moving forward. Not, oh, you almost traded me, now I’m not interested in blah blah blah. No one cares. Like, that’s not how this business works. Everybody understands that it’s a business. But the other piece behind all this is that the Saints and Alante Taylor, I feel comfortable confirming, are having or or have had actively having uh contract negotiations, right? And so having conversations about extending Alante Taylor, I also feel pretty comfortable in saying that like those negotiations aren’t like close at this point, but that’s not unusual. It’s the middle of the season. That’s never and it was before the trade deadline. You’re always trying to keep your options open before the trade deadline and all those other things. So it’s not super uh shocking to think about the idea that like okay, yeah, they weren’t they’re not necessarily close to getting a deal done, but those conversations are happening. And so those are things that I’m comfortable saying or like, okay, that I those are things that I’ve been told. So now let’s go to the speculation of all this because it does create a little bit of intrigue that the Indianapolis Colts got involved and what that could mean and how that could change negotiations. So part of uh uh uh um the uh the Fowler report from ESPN was that the trade for Alante Taylor from the Colts perspective would have led to them placing Alante Taylor as an outside corner. That’s really important. An outside corner with Kenny Moore staying in the slot. The Saints have Alante Taylor in this outside inside hybrid role. He plays outside corner in base packages. He plays uh uh inside plays in the slot in nickel packages, right? And so I imagine that there should be some pushing and pulling here in terms of contract negotiations of do you pay him as an outside corner or do you pay him as a slot corner? Now again, this is speculation. This is just me saying, hey, this makes sense, but one and one make two, right? And anytime that you have a defensive end that plays edge rusher but also bounces inside, you’re going to have to pay that defensive end as an edge rusher. Anytime that you have a tight end that lines up a lot out wide, you’re going to start to have some conversations about how you pay that tight end. You’re probably not paying them as a wide receiver, but you’re not paying them like a blocking true wide tight end. You’re paying them as a move F tight end, and that’s how you get a Joan Johnson contract. or of course the Saints years ago with Jimmy Graham having to go to uh court basically over the whole thing litigation over whether or not he should be paid as a wide receiver because of how much he was lined up out wide. This is not unprecedented. This is not unusual. And in fact, the Saints had a very similar situation just a couple of years ago with CJ Gardenner Johnson. The Saints wanted to pay CJ Garner Johnson as a slot corner as I understand it. CJ Gardner Johnson wanted to be paid as a safety as I understand it. CJ Garner Johnson was traded. Now, there were a lot of things that CJ Garner Johnson did in the midst of all that that Alante Taylor didn’t do and they’re not the same conversation. Uh CJ Garner Johnson did not just get traded because he wanted more money. CJ Gardner Johnson got traded because of things. And so, when it comes to Alante Taylor, those things are not present in this conversation. I want to be really clear about that. That was other stuff. And so, for Alante, it becomes really interesting. Do I sign a contract if I’m an if I’m a corner that other teams view as an outside corner? Do I take less money to sign as a nickel here or do I go and I try to pursue that outside corner money? The logical decision there is to go and pursue the outside corner money. So, this is going to be a really interesting race to the finish line between the Saints and Alante Taylor because if I’m Alante Taylor and I know that Indianapolis wanted to trade for me and put me out at outside corner, I’m going to the free agency market and I’m letting somebody sign me as an outside corner rather than taking money as a slot corner unless the Saints are willing to make me the highest paid slot corner in the NFL. So, I think this becomes really really interesting. Again, a blend of like report and information and speculation there, but very very intriguing stuff for how the Saints and Alante Taylor will now move forward. following that situation. All right, we’ll see you next time. We thank you very much for making us a party day, part of your routine, for saying yes to me and the show. If you see me, please say hi. The New Orleans Saints had an eventful trade deadline, but now all eyes are both on rookie quarterback Tyler Shough. The passer will see his second start Sunday against the Carolina Panthers in NFL Week 10, facing a defense that gives some favorable opportunities. Shough’s growth and continued success will both be under the microscope in Charlotte.
Devaughn Vele and Chase Young are among the most important players to watch after the trade for Rashid Shaheed and Young’s fast start since returning from injury. Alontae Taylor was reportedly almost traded to the Indianapolis Colts, who instead landed Sauce Gardner. But the near-trade could now have ripple effects in New Orleans.

Chase young has been very disruptive
Sadly, I think you have to let Alontae go. He might be the worst tackling defensive player in the NFL. Speed & athleticism are undeniable. But he can’t wrap up anything. Idk how you invest in that.
Sadly I'm not watching the Saints anymore this season they pushed Rattler out for this dude Tyler and ppl acting like this dude had massive career at QB in college and been less exciting as a rookie…throwing balls to the side line its a gr8 characteristic but you stretching it Ross he's not that dude
Panthers have barely squeeked by 3 of their 5 wins by 3 points each. And they've been blown out when facing top performing teams. Young has trouble breaking 200 yards passing, so if the Saints can even marginally slow their run, this could be a big chance to pick up a win. Shough and his offense are now past the toughest opponent on the schedule, so we'll start to get a better picture of how he's able to motivate his crew and execute Moore's scheme against a softer defense on the road. My expectations are low, but at least I'm not cringing to watch this one.
My my my who dat nation here we go again
Rattler played in two tough conferences big 12 and sec Spencer Rattler's college stats include two seasons with Oklahoma (2019–2021) and two with South Carolina (2022–2023). He finished his career with 10,806 passing yards and 77 touchdowns. here’s is his college stats!!!
Most touchdowns in a single game at South Carolina: 6 against Tennessee in 2022
Big 12 Championship MVP: Awarded in 2020 after leading Oklahoma to victory
Senior Bowl MVP: Earned MVP honors in the 2024 Reese's Senior Bowl
check out the older Shough Stats in a weaker conference but anywho !! ! Oh let’s draft a quarterback we’ll go look at the numbers Arch Manning struggling in the Sec at Texas he’s staying another year . Mendoza is in a weak conference Indiana . The draft The Draft every year the draft we’ve drafted heisman trophy winners in the past etc . We have our Franchise Quaterback who put up good numbers in college and NFL but the saints high school playbook , ol, butterfingers .anywho Listen the winning formula is right before our eyes get two good tight ends !!! They’ll help open up the offense and help with the blocking scheme . Most great Quaterbacks / offense had great tight ends heres a few Brady & Hernandez &Gronk mahomes& kelce, Aikman & novechek, Eli manning&shockey ,Big Ben R. & Heath Miller, Peyton manning &DallasClark , Elway & sharp , Favre &bubba franks , a descent line , receiving core and power / running back and a good Coach !! And the offense will move the ball but once again looking to the draft with weary eyes to fix things !!! maybe we’ll draft Kellen moores offensive cordinator son LSU Garret Nussmier 👀👀.(Nepotism Alert ‼️)Hey Rattler if your Reading this request a trade the Steelers are interested and others you were set up to be the escape goat 🐐 !!! go be great 😊 our team has never had success building with rookie franchise quarterbacks !! Drew Brees arrived as a 5 year battle tested veteran benched for Philip Rivers and played for a worst organization the San Diego Chargers Run 🏃♂️ while you can and go be great young man Run Rattler Runnnnn !!!!
I think the best course of action here is to allow Shough to finish out the season to see what he can do. If it’s more of the same, I vote we plan to start Rattler next year with an updated O line, 1 new TE (move on from Ju wan Johnson) and add a new RB. The Saints love AK and so do I but he is not being utilized correctly.
The defensive side of things is manageable now that Chase is back applying GREAT amounts of pressure. But defense can’t put points on the board.
Start really using some of the high end rookies like Devin Neal, Vele so they can properly develop.
In other words, start building your O line around Rattler.
Very, very, very, very, very winnable game
Rattler is the better QB for the Saints.
Idk the more I watch Shough , I feel out next QB isn't on the roster. I really want Fernando Mendoza
Sheed stop running on that play
We done with Rattler trade him in the off-season
I'm waiting to see Polk and Palmer. Polk was a good wr in college possession guy but we really need a good te
They will have to play Vele now. Should’ve been playing him this whole time
If you think about it. The only player that was on the roster last year that has gotten better was Spencer Rattler. Not Kool Aid, Not Fuaga,Not Means
Bru I really need for you to stop bragging on Bresee dude is garbage against the run when are you going to put him in the same category as Payton Turner Davenport and Trevor Penning
Hear me out on shough vs rattler
Rattler last year all of a sudden no mccoy no shaheed Even when you had penning , was he really there? Lol lack of taysom .. olave non existent hurt or not y'all missing it….. It's the real evaluation…. KM simulating same scenario from last year, all y'all say rattler vs shough even …so now for shough simulating last year with rattler same dance to see if shough really look the same as rattler if so grab a QB if not lettem both cook grab pieces before they get rid of both lol KM got the biggest smile of an 1-8 coach I've ever seen lol it's a method to the madness
