Demko news summary

  1. Management knew this coming into the season with Demko, that’s why they signed Lankinen to the deal they did.

  2. Of course this is not ideal, but I’m still confident in the tandem. The goal, so long as we have Demko, should be to make sure he is 100% for the playoffs every year (if we make it). And goaltending wise, I don’t think we should have any worries about making the playoffs with the Demko-Land tandem (it’s the forward depth, we all know that).

  3. Thought Foote did pretty decent actually imo. Saying he’s basically day to day and explaining that they asked Thatcher to take care of himself throughout the season and that he was glad to see him doing that. Seems as clear as you’re going to get other than flat out saying they are load managing his minutes this year

  4. I had no problem with Footes messaging honestly. His communication has been awesome so far in my opinion.

  5. I love Demko, but it’s kind of scary that he can’t play **50 games** a season. He’s the 5th highest paid goalie in the league next year and 27 goalies played more than 50 games last season. 8.5M for someone that **needs** to be in a 1A/1B situation is pretty bad cap management no matter how you look at it.

  6. All those years overplaying him to death when the team was shit and had little to no potential to make the playoffs was such a great idea!

  7. It wasn’t that long ago, goalies were playing 70+ games/season.

Nowadays the goaltending position is such a physically demanding position, it’s really crazy how technical/scientific it all is.

I feel like the NHL needs to come up with a creative/progressive way to allow teams to carry a 3rd goalie for practices/backing up.

  8. And that’s a summary of everything that we feared when he re-signed. He shouldn’t/can’t play multiple games in a row, which puts him firmly into a 1A/1B situation @ a maximum of 40 games a year. And he’ll likely need to take time off on very short notice due to soreness or as a precaution.

We should just put him on IR and give him significant time off instead of trying to “manage” or “nurse” the issue.

  9. It was confusing what Foote said. Just say he’s sore and needs more rest in a condensed schedule.

  10. I don’t see what the Canucks need to communicate with us via “messaging”, if he’s injured and out, they’ll probably say he’s injured and out.

If not and there’s a call up, we know they’re simply not going to be riding 35 hard anymore, which we’ve seen cost him, the team and the rest of us dearly more than once..

  11. It’s pretty rich to hear Dhaliwal criticize someone for unclear messaging – has he heard himself talk lol?

  12. I thought that Foote was being intelligently vague. Was Demko injured? No. But to give a small insinuation that he was was necessary to bring up Petera on emergency recall.

  13. If I had a dollar for every “Not hearing it’s anything major” I’d buy the team from Aqua

  14. I thought we could run a 1A, 1B this year, but Lankinen hasn’t played well enough to handle 40 games. I wonder how they’ll manage this going forward.

  15. If Demko comes up to you and says “my back/knee hurts” even if it’s not an injury, believe him lmao. That’s what I think they’re doing and being overly cautious.

  16. I love how the media blames the team for being vague but the reason they are vague is because of the media

  17. So let me get this straight, even if we make the playoffs this year Demko can’t start all of the games?
