Hunter Greene DOMINATES MLB Hot Stove – Arizona Diamondbacks LATEST to Enter the Chat

There continues to be smoke around the idea of trading Hunter Green throughout Major League Baseball. We’ve got the latest on the Hunter Green rumors on today’s Locked on Reds. [Music] You are Locked on Reds. Your daily Cincinnati Reds podcast, part of the Locked On Network. your team every day. Welcome in to Locked on Reds. My name is Jeff, his name is Steve, and we are lifelong Cincinnati Reds fans. We’ve been podcasting about this team for a combined 14 seasons, and we’re glad that you’re alongside us here today. Locked on Reds is part of the Locked On Network. We are your team, your Reds, every single day, and we want to thank you for helping us make Locked On the number one sports podcast network in the country. On today’s Locked on Reds, we’re going to talk about the excitement that we are feeling around the fact that Redsfest tickets are on sale. We’ll get into that a little bit later on. In a few minutes, we will talk about an interesting strategy about the Reds possibly looking to get Kyle Schwarber. We got more on the Kyle Schwarber rumors uh there in just a few, but we will begin with yet another person suggesting a possible trade package for the Reds ace in Hunter Green on today’s podcast that is brought to you by Game Time. Download the Game Time app today. Create an account and use the promo code locked on MLB to save $20 off your first purchase. Steve, we continue to hear rumors and rumblings and grumblings about a possible Hunter Green trade. And while it’s not Nick Crawl’s talked with so- and so about this or Nick Crawl has talked with this team about this, it’s other people coming out and saying this is what we would offer. And it’s not just, you know, Joe Schmo. The most recent one comes from a Diamondbacks writer on the um and I’m blanking on the name, but it was basically the foul territory version of the Diamondbacks podcast and stuff like that. He was talking about the idea of the Arizona Diamondbacks trading for Hunter Green. You know, this is another just another on top. We heard this involving the Boston Red Sox. We’re hearing this involving the Arizona Diamondbacks. We we this all goes back to Mark Sheldon asking Nick Crawl direct question, would you entertain offers on Hunter Green? Nick didn’t say no. And and we’re going to talk about this a lot during the offseason because Nick Crawl doesn’t just come right out and say, “No, I’m not trading this guy. I’m not trading that guy. He gives GM speak. He gives president of baseball operations speak where he says things like, “We’ll entertain the offers as they come in. We’ll try and make the best version of our team we can, etc., etc., etc.” Right? But it’s interesting that the league is talking about this, beat writers are talking about this, and I know it’s the time of year where these beat writers are working hard to to come up with topics and and find ways to rumor season air time. It’s rumor season. I mean, you know, we do it, they do it, everybody do it does it. we find ways to to take the information that’s available to us and put the content out to the people and and the the beat writers over in Arizona are doing that. But it’s interesting to me that, you know, there are several teams throughout baseball whose writers are taking a look at this at the idea of what it would take, what they’d be willing to give up, what their fan bases would be willing to accept in order to bring in a pitcher like Hunter Green. And in all of these cases, the packages have been interesting. They’ve been expensive, as they should be. and they’ve all been starting points. There’s not been any kind of package proposed that made me want to be like, “Sign it, do it. Let’s get it done. I’m going to go help Hunter Pack.” Uh, not seen an offer like that. But it’s definitely it’s definitely interesting to see the the gears in the minds of the baseball people around the league contemplate the idea of what if Hunter really is on the block or at least what if the Reds could be persuaded to make a trade. I think it’s like the beginning of the regular season. The beginning of the off season is a season of hope for every team because every team can imagine what their front office will do over the next couple of months. They can imagine how their front office can make their team better before the next couple of months crush everybody’s hopes unless you’re a Los Angeles Dodgers fan. And and when it comes to this idea, the beat writer for or one of the writers for the Diamondbacks suggested that if the Diamondbacks really wanted Hunter Green, they should call the Reds right now and offer up second baseman Catel Marte. That would be amazing, a nice starting point for the Reds to consider some type of trade. Like you mentioned, it’s another one of these things where it’s just like, okay, go on, right? Like what’s next? What else is coming back in this trade offer? because Hunter Green is an ace and he is under control through 2029. So while there are smoke and while there are rumors surrounding the idea of this possibly happening, we understand the the likelihood is small. But at the same time, there could be somebody who blinks and just offers this ridiculous offer. And Nick Crawl cannot be in a position where he has already said, “No, absolutely. there is nothing that I will take for Hunter Green. That’s just not going to happen. That’s not realistic. So, I appreciate the fact that he hasn’t come out and said that. But I am intrigued a little bit by this because if you consider the addition of Catel Marte, Catel Marte was a all-star snub last season for the National League. Really good player the kind of guy that you could put into the middle of your order and feel pretty good about. and he would play second base and then that would free up and loosen up the pressure on Matt Mlan to kind of figure some things out and and how that could work. You can have Marte at second. You can have Mlan at short. You can move to to the center field. Oh, sorry. I’m not supposed to talk about moving Ellie to the outfield. I forgot. My bad. Sorry, guys. Uh but no, like this is a nice starting point for a hunter green trip. It’s it’s definitely a you you have my attention go on kind of kind of opening salvo. Um, you know, I I look at these I look at these offers, Jeeoff, I I look at this stuff and the Reds are in a very interesting position here. I I would love to sit down and have a beer with Mark Sheldon and just an off thereord conversation to be like, did did somebody prompt you to ask the Hund Green question? Did you come up with that on your own? Were you doing somebody a solid just to generate buzz? Like, what was going on there? I would love to know the answer. We’ll never get the answer to that question, but I would love to know the answer because it’s generated a whole lot of buzz. But the Reds are in a position where even if true, even if there have been internal conversations in this Red’s front office to say, you know, we can move Hunter Green, we have the depth, we can bring back these pieces, we can make the team better, etc., etc. They are under absolutely no pressure to do that. They are under absolutely no rush to get some kind of deal done. Now, if they’re having these conversations and there’s there’s validity to Nick Carl actively doing this, you know, it might tick Hunter off a little bit, so that could create problems. But beyond that, the Reds don’t have to do anything. If there’s not a knock your socks off offer made for Hunter Green, Hunter Green’s starting opening day and the beat goes on. There’s there’s zero there’s zero real risk here in entertaining the conversations. There’s zero real risk in finding out what the baseline around the league is right now. And you can file that information away in your memory banks if you don’t trade Hunter for a potential deadline deal later for the next off season when you know he has less team control and you’re looking to maybe think about what you’re going to do with him long term. It’s just information gathering at this point. So I have no problem at all with the Reds at least hearing other people out. This feels like the Jonathan India trade rumors, right? Like when those first started like they took years before Jonathan India was actually traded and and it’s the same feeling here. Hunter Green is a much better player than Jonathan India was. But the idea is there is no ticking clock here. There’s no contract that’s expiring. Everyone is extremely gruntled. You know, to quote Michael Scott on today’s episode, um there’s no disgruntled players here. And quite frankly, I think even if Hunter Green were disgruntled, we would never know because there are few players in Major League Baseball that carry themselves as professionally as Hunter Green does and as very balanced and stress-free as Hunter Green does. And I don’t think that would be something that we as Reds fans would even be privy to uh until, you know, maybe there’s some sort of Players Tribune article that comes out years after the fact and he admits that or something. But during the entire process, whatever the end of this process looks like, we would never know that from Hunter Green’s side. And so I think that’ll be the interesting part out of all of this is we will never get a sense of yes, it’s about to happen. If it does happen, it’ll be a bit of a surprise and it’ll be a bit of a just like bam, he’s traded. And then if it doesn’t happen, it won’t surprise us either. You know, the interesting thing, you compare this to the Jonathan India rumors and the way that all went down. There was a lot of Jonathan India speculation for a couple seasons leading into the off season where then it was it was Cat Trent. It was one of the Reds beat writers that was like, you know, there’s something going on with the Royals. There’s there’s talks happening here. And then lo and behold, later that offseason, Jonathan India is traded to the Royals for Brady Singer. And in this case, it’s it’s a beat writer again that kind of have got this ball rolling this off seasonason. So that’s why I would love to have that beer with Mark Sheldon and find out what really went down to get this conversation started. But listen, Hunter Green is not the only buzz around the town of Cincinnati right now. We spent a lot of time talking about Kyle Schwarber yesterday. Uh we saw you guys in the comments. Some of you came after us and completely disagree with us. Some of you had some interesting follow-up questions that we’re going to address because there are some things that the Reds could do to get Kyle Orber that we didn’t talk about yesterday. We’re going to talk about those coming up next. The NFL season is in full swing and honestly, there’s nothing better than being in the stadium surrounded by fans cheering your team on. Hey, the Bengals had a buy this week and still the defense managed to give up 40 points. you figure that one out. But that’s neither here nor there. You are a big part of why Locked On Locked on Podcast Network is the number one sports podcasting network around. We thank you so much. All right, Jeeoff, let’s dive back into the Kyle Schwarber of it all for just a second. And I know there’s some of you that were after us in the comments yesterday that’ll be like, “Really?” Again, you guys are going to double down. Yes, we are. Um, here’s why. There were some great questions in the comment section uh both on the YouTube comments and uh some stuff on social media um on Twitter X and some of the other feeds um kind of expanding it out about how the Reds could get outside of the regular box they operate in and get this done and still be able to address other needs specifically because I asked the question of you Jeff yesterday, you know, if they did this, what would be left for move B? And there would have to be a move B because Kyle Schwarber is not coming here to lose. he’s going to still want to win. So, how could they make that happen? And uh user J5 on Twitter X asked a great question about deferred money. Would the Reds consider going back in that deferred money box? I think the last time we saw that was with the Ken Griffy Jr. contract and you know the new front office that was under the Carl Linder, you know, even before that, the Jim Bowden, you know, groups that that did that deferred money deal and the new Castellini ownership group seemed to indicate they would not be interested in doing deferred money. But this is an interesting time to to reconsider it if the Reds were willing to get outside that box because I think in the new CBA there are going to be restrictions put on deferred money. I think the volume of money that the Dodgers deferred over the last couple years in order to sign every single free agent all-star in the league uh and be able to pay the bills and keep the lights on in Chavez Ravine. Um, I think that volume is going to result in there being rules placed upon this. And if the Reds are going to strike, this is really their last and only opportunity to do that before we get into the negotiations of a new CBA, right? So, this would be the time. And, you know, I am not a big fan of deferred money. You guys have heard me go after the Dodgers enough to know that I don’t really like this. I feel like it’s cheating a little bit, but right now it’s legal. The Reds need to do something different because they’ve been in four playoff games since the year 2012. They’ve lost all four of them. Two of them in an embarrassing fashion and the other two weren’t much better. So, it’s time to do something different. Maybe this is the different Jeff because if you signed Schwarber and had deferred money in the deal, you could still address the bullpen. You could still bring back say a Miguel and Duhar to make the lineup a little bit more potent. Um, and you could make this team a better version than it was last year. And if you can do that and still keep the budget in numbers that will, you know, not cause Phil Castellini to run out of hair gel, I say you go do it. No. And and I would agree. I mean, I think this off season they need to do everything they can to just blow up the status quo because it’s clear they could easily continue with what they have and they’d be fine at 83 wins and they’d be fine hoping that there’s somebody that collapses like the Mets every year and they can sneak on into the playoffs. But if not, well, you know, it wasn’t a losing season and we can move on to the following year after that. But enough of that, because this only takes money. This edition does not require you to gamble some sort of prospects or gamble some sort of major league talent right now for a big trade that then everybody can point back to and be like, “How on earth could you think this would work?” I think everybody understands who Kyle Schwarber is. We’re not saying that he’s going to come here and fix the outfield. We’re not saying that he’s going to come here and fix the infield. We’re saying he’s going to come here and fix part of the lineup. And of course, there are questions of that and we can address those at a different time of like, okay, well then who, you know, who follows him, but that kind of like the whole adage of who watches the watchers. You can continue to ask questions on down the road. Like at some point, you just got to get yourself a doob. And Kyle Schwarber is a dude, but on top of what he brings to on the field, he’s got so much value off the field as well. He’s going to absolutely be a community darling around greater Cincinnati if he were to come here for multiple years. And so you could say, well, the Reds aren’t going to do a deferred money contract because they’re reticent to even make a deal past the the lockout or, you know, the perceived lockout that’s going to happen in 2027. much less push that can down the road even further. But I would argue to you, how could they not whenever there’s so much perceived value that could follow a deal like this? Like I I just don’t see because I am a fan that watches this team and not an owner of it, how this could negatively affect them. Like I feel like this could be a win-win type of deal for them. I I agree. It’s really, we really are getting closer and closer to a time where the Castellinis are going to have to revamp the way they’re doing things if they if they hope to maintain a shred of credibility within the greater Cincinnati community. Um, we’re not we’re no longer talking about hypothetical windows that are coming. We’re no longer talking about a team that has arrived air quotes arrived early. This team is in the thick of the the competition window that they said they were going to create. They said they were getting ready for it. They said they were going to take seriously and they said they were going to do what they took to win. Well, this is what it takes to win. And no, I don’t expect them to go out and spend $450 million this off seasonason. But I do expect them to try things differently to get us a better result. And this is a big step in that direction. if they could just get this one big deal done and if you have to defer some money, if you have to do things a little wonky to get it to happen, I’m okay with that because trying and failing, I can accept. Not doing anything and failing is criminal, right? It it’s it’s worse. It’s it’s worse than making a bad move is making no move at all. And I and we talked about the fact that Nick Crawl has seen over the last, you know, very recent history that the Reds have not had a good track record with big money deals. But that cannot be something that forces him out of this type of a move. And the deferred money thing, like I I I don’t think that we understand that this could literally be anything. They could make Kyle Schwarber the next Bobby Bonita if Bobby Bonia if if if they really wanted to and and like push out his contract 30 years. Yep. Just making sure that he is on this team. And I think that that is something I’m not saying the 30 years thing is something they should consider, but they should consider all avenues to acquire him. And it feels as though you and I and everyone that knows this team would bet against them doing anything possible to get him. They we would much much more likely bet on them to do nothing than to even try to acquire him because it feels like if you even try, he’s going to have a lot of interest in coming. I am going to sit on that all off season until he signs elsewhere or he signs here. If the Reds show a competitive interest in Kyle Schwarber, they could probably get him. You know, it’s interesting. I feel like sometimes people, you know, the the every out there watching the show and they’re asking themselves, Jeff, Steve, do you guys really think that Nick Crawl is going to go sign Kyle Schwarber? That’s not where we’re at in the offseason right now. where we’re at in the offseason right now is what are the possibilities? What is available? Kyle Schwarber is available and the Reds have a unique opportunity within their means to go make a push to get Kyle Schwarber. Will they do it? If you’re if you’re a betting man, I you know, I’m taking less on prize picks. I’m taking the under on FanDuel. I’m not going to put money on the Reds going and doing this. But the the excuse of, oh, we’re a small market team. We can’t. it doesn’t hold water. And I think that’s what I’m trying to demonstrate, Jeff. I think that’s what you’re trying to demonstrate is that there are ways that they can go out and have these conversations and actually make serious offers to a player like Kyle Schwarber and get him to Cincinnati and they just have to operate a little bit differently than they have been. And they can get it done and still address the other needs of this team, the bullpen, the outfield, the the holes that they have to fill. They can do all of those things and stay on budget, but they just have to get their feet out of the mud and start moving forward. Keeping the status quo would be a huge failure. Copy and pasting last off season will get you the exact same result as what you get this year. Like ideally, sure, guys take a step forward, but we’ve been talking about that for years and years and years. It’s time to get creative. It’s time to make an aggressive move because quite frankly between now and January I’d like to be talking about something like that because you know what happens in January Steve Redsfest. The NBA is back and there’s no better place to get in on the action than FanDuel, the official sports betting partner of the NBA. Even if you miss the start of the game or want to ride the hot hand, FanDuel has live bets on everything from who will score next to fourth quarter comebacks and so many different things in between. Uh, plus you can even combine your live bets into a same game parlay for a shot at a bigger payout. I mean, there’s so many different ways that you can enjoy the action, even when it comes to the NFL and college football and college basketball as well. Become an Everydayer everywhere because that’d be awesome. We appreciate our everydayers out there and every day know how much Steve and myself love Redsfest cuz quite frankly it’s opening day and it’s Redsfest for me the days on the calendar and I get it. Redsfest is like two days on the calendar. Uh but that that’s how I feel in a normal year. And we didn’t get that last year because Duke Energy was being renovated and and they weren’t able to find a different solution and all that other stuff. But when it comes to the return of Redsfest, like I am so pumped about this and I’m looking forward to We talked about this a little bit probably a couple of months ago. I want to say that we saw the announcement a little while back, but we now have ticket pricing. We now have schedules and all of the good stuff that is happening. On January 16th, Friday, January 16th, and Saturday, January 17th, the brand new Cincinnati Convention Center, not Duke Energy Convention Center, but Cincinnati Convention Center will host its first event, Redsfest. It was like Christmas morning the other day, Jeff. I opened up the MLB Ballpark app, clicked on the ticket section, and there they were. my 2026 Redsfest Friday and my 2026 Redsfest Saturday right there in my ballpark app. I’m so excited. I can’t wait to get back out and do this. Um, this is one of my favorite events of the year. Um, you know, you and I have both had a great time. It’s a it’s a huge opportunity to interact with the players, interact with officials from around the team, but most importantly, it’s an opportunity in the dead of winter for all of the Reds fans to interact with each other. I have had so much fun at the convention center just talking baseball with people whether we’re waiting in a line for something or just wandering around. Uh the number of our friends we run into while we’re down there. It’s just such a great time. If you’re on the fence about going get off the fence, this is going to be a good one. I think the Reds will go big. I think there’ll probably be a few surprises along the way as the first event back in the convention center. I’m really really looking forward to this two-day event. Yeah, it’s going to be a ton of fun. And quite frankly, hearing about the official information behind all of this was very warming on a day where there’s snow on the ground here in Ohio. So, it’s really early to be having snow on the ground, but like seeing the the news about this, like two-day tickets are $40 for adults and $25 for kids 12 and younger. One day tickets are $30 for adults and $20 for kids, again, 12 and younger. Uh, children three and under are admitted for free. Uh then another thing too, the first 10,000 fans in attendance each day will receive a Redsfest drawstring bag and sticker sheet. And like you had mentioned and like you showed for uh those of those of us on YouTube here. If you’re a season ticket M member, you have complimentary admission for the entire weekend. You you don’t have to buy tickets extra or anything like that. I assume this is going to be huge. And quite frankly, I think that there’s a reason, and I was a little bit critical of the Reds for not being creative in this in last year’s situation where they just they didn’t have the big convention center at their disposal. And so, could you come up with something else? We’re going to see why they probably can’t because there’s just going to be so many people there on January 16th and 17th. And I’m very pumped to be talking. By that point, we should have a resolution as to this Kyle Schwarber thing. And so, you guys can come dunk on us if we’re totally wrong or or at least dunk on me. I’m sure Steve won’t let you dunk on him, but um or come celebrate with us and hopefully we get to meet Kyle Schwarber uh there at Resfest, too. Uh if he does end up signing. And and oh, one more thing, speaking of huge, if everybody would please leave the Ian Jabau jerseys and the grab bags alone until I get mine, I would really appreciate it. Um because, you know, I’m I’m heading for that size. I need that size Jeff. Well, but but see Steve, now you’re being shortsighted. Zack Maxwell is part of this team and he had multiple game used jerseys, right? Both of those will definitely fit in those. I’m holding out hope for that end of the spectrum this year. But I also think too like there there’s so many so many random things that I’ve I’ve gotten to do at Ratsfest like meeting different folks and just kind of sitting around like you said talking Rats baseball. That’s going to be the fun part about this. I’ve always kind of thought too that at the beginning of December, it’s almost as if it’s too early. And I kind of like this January placement. I don’t know if it’s going to stay this way all the time because part of this is just the renovation schedule of the convention center, but I would encourage the Reds to consider keeping this a permanent thing because I kind of like it being in January. I agree. You know, from a Red standpoint, they like it in December so that people can buy for the holiday. That’s why they like it in December to sell the merchandise. That makes sense. But I I like this in January just from a you know, you’re in the dead of winter. It’s cold. It’s January. The end kind of starts to be in sight. Spring training is coming. You know, it’s a month from Redfest till pitchers and catchers report. And I think this is a great timing to get everybody re-energized, reinvigorated. Hopefully, you’ve got some signings for people to be excited about. meet some of the young players that may be competing for jobs come spring training in Goodyear and everybody has all that energy. You ride it through a couple hot stove league shows and bam, you’re off and running in Goodyear. And I am I’m excited already. I’m ready to go right now. Let’s go to the convention center right now. It might be a little bit while if we go down there and be a little bit cold um and we’ll probably miss a few holidays if we go down there right now. But I will say this for anybody that wants to ask. I always tell everybody this. If you’re asking me who my next autograph’s going to be, I’m going to tell you it’s nobody because I had a streak for a couple of years ending with Dan Straley who I got an autograph from somebody at Red’s Fest and that guy got traded. So, I’m not getting anybody’s autograph at Redsfest because I ain’t going to put that juju on nobody. I don’t want to see anybody get traded who doesn’t need to be traded. Like, if I get Ellie’s autograph, guys, I’m sorry. There there’s a problem. Hear me out on this. If you were to get Phil Castellini’s autograph, might the team be sold? I don’t know that his value on the trademark is very high. Anyway, that’s where we’re going today. We’re we’re once again off the Christmas card list. Off the Christmas card list. And get a Ian Jabau, a Zack Maxwell, a Jeff Carr. All that fit me. Hey. Hey, look. We got to make up for lost time here. And by the way, the Jeff Carr one, I I don’t know, man. I don’t know. That might be too expensive.

  1. I’m working on getting a few things lined up for José Rijo for a few surprises during RedsFest weekend! Maybe we will see some of you! Stay tuned!

Keep doing your thing Jeff and Steve you guys are my goto Reds Podcast! Whatever thing you guys do! Keep that energy up! God bless you both and your families!

  2. WITH Greene we are still a Wild Card team at best… 2 and out. You trade him now, you may get a Herschel Walkerlike package. You can be pretty decent every year or spin this group, load up for 2028, 2029. Same with Elly, if anybody out there still thinks he is "generational." Stop waiting until their walk year to get nothing for them in comparison.

  3. Hunter Greene, Spencer Steer, Edwin Arroyo and Chase Petty to Boston for Jarren Duran, Triston Casas, Jhostynxon Garcia and Payton Tolle. Don't really want to deal Hunter, but this is the kind of haul I'd need.

  4. If the offer was Green for Marte plus anything else im driving him to Arizona myself. I like Green but Marte would have a much bigger impact here than Green

  5. The Reds are not insterest in winning, but the ownership just want to make theirs money and run, they are not in to win, but they are treating this baseball things as a bussiness, that is it

  6. I think California would be a good idea for the red and get the other out for you who used to play for the rest of the family too and I got they can't send money cut players who can't pitch very well
