Former Colorado Avalanche chairman and CEO Charlie Lions was on SiriusXM NHL Network Radio Channel 91 with Steve Culius to discuss what it was like successfully keeping Joe Sackic in Colorado in 1997 during a chaotic 7-day time frame. That all this Charlie comes together in seven days. Like there’s, you know, this isn’t one moving part. Like if we get the Fox deal done, it’s done. if the movie does really well, we’ll borrow in from the future. Even though that wasn’t the best thing, as you alluded to, from the movie company or the mayor says, “Yeah, we’re gonna do that.” Like they could have said, “It’s August. We’ll talk after Labor Day.” So, what what’s incredible, right, that you you got it done that quickly, which is almost it’s hard to do one deal in five business days, let alone the seven you dealt with. You know, in the movie business, I I make this point in the documentary. One of the things that keeps an audience engaged is if the clock is ticking, you know, find the person that’s been kidnapped, disable the bomb, stop the terrorist, get to the stage on time so you can get up and do your standup comedy when the audience is waiting. the ticking clock makes people realize we don’t have time to screw around. We got to fix this and do it right now. So that was in many ways as miserable it was for and particularly with my team because I had a great team, you know, and but they did the heavy lifting because in essence we had to do everything on handshakes. You’re not going to get everything docked. But these are the you’re talking about the most honorable parties on earth. The mayor, Fox, Liberty Media. When they shake your hand, it’s gold. And so we got it all done and here we are. What was it like to This is 1997, so no e transfers. What was it like to tell the Rangers uh to quote a uh song to take this and shove it? Who made the call and said, “By the way, here’s the check for Joe Sackic. Um, bye-bye NYC.” Well, Pierre went Pierre went to Joe’s house and delivered the money. I got up with Liberty and Fox and the mayor at at city hall and we announced the arena deal, Fox and Liberty and uh we were coordinated. It was choreographed and then I sent I was a a speech writer when I was a kid and I had the blessing to do some work for the the governor of New York when he was vice president Nelson Rockerfeller and he had that famous picture where he was being heckled and he offered his opinion of that and that picture of him flipping the bird was I figured a nice gift to send Dave checks, who’s a good friend of mine, by the way. I love it. I never knew that. I love it. SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio is the place for expert advice, strategy, and information from the best fantasy sports analysis to win your league. Every time you have a back to back, it’s uh it’s just you can’t even think twice about this game. It’s behind us now. We got to focus on tomorrow. It’s a big test for us. Obviously, we know what team they bring and um the challenge that they bring. So, um yeah, just move on. That is Matias Echolome. Oilers needed to turn the page after an underwhelming performance last night. Let’s bring a border inside the game analyst Rob Brown. Rob, uh, your thoughts on what EKM had to say. Turn the page. Let’s go. Stars. There’s nothing you can do about a game that’s already done. So, yeah, obviously you turn the page and it’s a tough opponent even without a number of their players in the lineup. Uh, they do have a superstar on their side in Randon. That was the big trade last year that is supposed to put them over the top and they got two incredible defenseman on the back end. So, this is still a very good hockey club. Uh, the Oilers have had to go through Dallas twice to get to the Stanley Cup finals. Uh, and who knows, maybe to year three again this year. So, uh, it was underwhelming. I don’t think the Oilers have played poorly. I just think the Oilers have made too many big mistakes. Yeah. And have yet to have the urgency that they, you know, that they’re capable of. And I think that maybe a game against a Dallas Star team will bring out that urgency tonight. It was interesting. I don’t know if you heard the interview with Jim Nil that I did, but we talked about the two different series and he said Skinner was the difference two years ago, but he said Evton was just better and playing the right way last year. Well, now you have Glenn Gullison coming over, you know, ran the Oilers power play and was the longest serving Oilers coach last seven years in Edmonton and playing the right way. I don’t think Everton’s got to play in the right way yet. Maybe other than the game against Vancouver, the second game of the year. Yeah, I I agree. I think that to me the the biggest disappointment for the Oilers so far through 14 games is their attention to detail. It’s communication in their own zone. Bad pinches, bad turnovers, uh not two men going to the same man, no man going to somebody like just little details and we talked about it with Mun earlier when the Oilers are at their best last year at the end of the season in the playoffs. They were a very very good defensive team. We haven’t seen that yet from the Oilers this year. Let’s go to the Ford keys to the game. They’re brought to you by Ford. Ford. Ready, set, forward. What do you got, Rob? Well, let’s throw out one that’s not just an important one for the Oilers, but also, as you talked about earlier, for Steuart Skinner being part of team Canada every time he gets an opportunity to start against, especially against really good hockey clubs. Uh, he’s he’s auditioning to be part of team Canada here in a few months time. So, I think this is a a big night for Stuart Skinner playing against a team that’s very good in Dallas. He got a very good power play. So to me the key tonight will be Stuart Skinner having a good hockey game. That’s our inside the game analyst Rob Brown. That wraps up Rogers game night. Cam Moon’s ready to go. He’s jacked. He’s pumped. He’s stoked. We’re at American Airlines Center. The Oers need to get their game going. Cam will have the call up next on 4ers NHL hockey and the owners radio network. Sports Net Plus is your ultimate destination for Oilers games. Stream more matchups than anywhere else. Spectacular. Proudly celebrating 50 years for the Edmonton Oilers. Currently on dry saddle was with Vasili Pod Coulson and Jack Rosik on defense. Darnell Nurse and Jake Walman. It’s Steuart Skinner in goal. For the Stars, Wyatt Johnston with Jason Robertson and Miko Rant in on defense. Thomas Harley and Ilia Labouchkin in goal. Casey D Smith. The referees Jake Brank and Francis Cheron. Tyson Baker and Ben O’ Quinn are on the lines as we had set to go here at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. The Edmonton Oilers coming off a 3-2 loss last night in St. Louis. Drop the puck. We’re underway as Pod Coulson will shoot it in and to Smith to Harley in the corner who’s got to deal with Ross Levik in there but up the left side. Harley was able to get it out to center. Brought in and now Robertson on the left wing. A shot and a save made by Skinner. The rebound rolled on goal and Skinner stopped that as Johnston followed it up and the puck to the right wing. Morant and going after it along the right wing boards. Pod pulls it in there too. It gets to the middle and Walman off the right wing all the way down and it will not be icing but a great chance early for Dallas. It’s in behind the Stars net up the left wing for Sam Steel. The product from Arjson got the puck to the neutral zone. Steel just over the center ice line will dump it in. Skinner has to play it. Rims it high on the left wing. Newton Hopkins up to the blue line and out to Bousard. Comes into Dallas territory to the middle. A pass across to Conor McDavid does not connect. It’s top of the circle. Steel out through the middle on the left to Sean. Off the left wing boards it in. Bousard’s pass to McDavid. Goes in behind the net up the left wing. It was looking for Newton Hopkins. Doesn’t get to him into the middle of the ice is steel to the right side. That pass for Sean. Hit him in the chest and it goes to the right wing corner and in behind the net is Bard. Flushed out of there. Flying through was Blackwell. Up the right wing. It’s off to stick it in to Smith to the corner. Bishell up the left wing. Won’t get it out. Henry keeping it in for Edmonton. The puck goes to the right wing corner. Blackwell will reverse it. Bishell to the left wing corner. We’re scoreless here on the first. Minute 45 gone. Over to Petravic in the Edmonton product up the right wing and get the puck to the neutral zone and Blackwell comes into the right wing corner of the Oiler in over to the left side to the left wing point to Bishop. Cross to Petravic. That was a little too far for him through the middle of the ice. The Oilers able to get it out on the right wing to Frederick. He’ll poke it into the right wing corner in Dallas territory. It’s in behind the Stars net. Petravic will take it in behind the goal. He waits in behind the net. Howard just beyond the crease and up the right wing. Sean on the left will get the puck in the left side to Ernie in the shot and the save made by Skinner as Adam Ernie the former Edmonton Oiler put it on goal. Skinner the save. He holds on. 2 minutes 32 seconds gone here in a scoreless first. Sir Skinner 922 924 in the last two years head-to-head against Dallas. Casey to Smith got touched in game five when he replaced Jay Coner. Call of the night. Oh, Phil a good job in the faceoff circle, but the see how he does here against Sega is very good on faceoffs. Goes to Hast and down the left wing. The angle shot and the save made by Skinner. He held on to it. One of the things we’ve noticed with Noah is he’s had difficult sustaining difficulty sustaining solid nights in the circle. He’s had one good game, one poor game, and the guys going against Sean can win draws. Sean’s about a 58% faceoff man most years. Face off to the right of Skinner. Puck goes right in front of the net and hacked towards the goal by Bastion. Off a stick goes up in the air to the blue line. It was kept in on the left wing point by Kopa Biano. And the puck goes over to the left wing inside the Oiler to the top of the circle. Sean across the line. Case getting it to Copa Bienko. Right wing corner now to Ernie. He’ll put it into the slot and there’s nobody there for the Stars. Cleared out by Tomasic of the Oilers. Edmonton can make a change as Rantin. Come out of his own end through the middle. We’re scoreless here in the first. Makes a move at the Edmonton line. Lost the puck to Rosik. Rosik into the Dallas zone on the left. Sweeps it in behind the net. It’s given away off the stick of Dry Cidle and Roselvic couldn’t get it to to it in time. It’s chopped out to center. Roselvic loops back at his own blue line to Bousard on the right up the right wing now to Roselik. Comes into the star zone, drives down the right side, one hand in front, scores. A one hand pass by Rosik over to Pod Coulson and it’s one- nothing Edmonton. Well, just a great play by Jack Roselovic and that’s going to excite every Oilers fan out there. That’s against Thomas Harley, one of their best defenseman. And Roselovic has got skill like he can make plays and he’s basically slingshoted himself past Harley and then one hands it across and Bud Coulson with a yawning cage. One- nothing Oilers. What a flight by Roslin. He’s able to get that across. Pod Coulson gets his second of the year. Think he’ll give Steve Busher and get the second assist there. 3:40 time of that goal and the Oilers are up one- nothing on the Stars. Wman with it inside his own end on the left to Newton Hopkins. Cuts through the middle. Misses Majapani with it. It goes into the star zone. Lindell won’t get it out. The shot by Wallman. Put it over the net. Pace get in on the right wing to center ice to Bour now off the stick of Steel and Walman has to go in behind the Edmonston goal on the right wing to Mapani. Cross ice to New Jen Hopkins. He’s forced back by Sean. Loops back through the middle. Dishes it on the right to McDavid into the star zone in front of the net off the stick of Nan Hopkins and it goes wide. Here’s your Hopkins on the end boards. Right wing for Majapani now to McDavid to the blue line to Walman. He’s in the middle. He’ll shoot it and the save by to Smith. Got it with the glove and we’ll get the whistle. 4 minutes 34 seconds gone here in the first. One- nothing Edmonton leads. There was a belief from some that maybe there would be a little retribution for the Darnell Nurse sequence and boy involved in rope hands. Jim Nell doesn’t have a team built like that. I mean, their most aggressive forwards, Jamie Ben, was is out with a a core injury, a lung injury. And then you’ve got uh you know, Mason Marchman who injured the Oilers. Zack Heyman incidental com. He’s in Seattle now. So, don’t see it happen. Yeah, I don’t think so either. Off the draw to the line. Koulak shot save made by Smith. The rebound just put wide by Seavoy. Puck in the right wing corner. Petravic across to Bishel off the right wing boards and out center ice. Beck will dump it in. Alec Regula goes in behind the net. Missed the last 12 games. Played the first two and he’ll get it up to center ice to Frederick into the Dallas zone. Taken to the boards by Petravic. Puck to the middle of the ice. Bissell has it for the Stars to Beck. Then he’ll get to center ice and dump the puck in. One- nothing Oilers lane here on the first. Bastion centering pass through the slot comes out to center. Copa Biano has the puck in the neutral zone. The left wing. Bastion didn’t touch it. That’s icing against the Stars. 522 gone here in the first. One- nothing Edmonton lead. Nathan Bastian’s an interesting player. He was with New Jersey. Looked like he was going to pop and then he went to Seattle and then ended up back in New Jersey and sort of reestablished himself a little bit. He was the player last year that uh Longberg got the upper hand on along the wall and did a little bit of a number on him. Basson’s a big man, 63, 6’4, about 215 lbs. But Longberg got the chainsaw going. Shot by Eholm. That’s off his stick. Launches over the glass, over the mesh, too, and into the crowd. Jack Rosik with that beautiful assist now has points in four straight games. He’s given the owners some skill. You know, a lot of teams are going to be signing their own guys. There’s increased amount of cap space around the league. What if Stan Bowman looks in January at progressing this relationship with Justin Bieber cuz right now is looking pretty good with Roselic as well. He keeps doing what he’s doing. Yep. Why wouldn’t you? Roselvic lets it go by him to try. Right wing corner along the right board to cycle it in behind the net. Bod calls it crashes in there to the point. Bousard a shot just tipped wide by Dry Sidle. He was right on the back door. Has the puck up at the blue line and then Bousard’s pass gets picked off. Here’s Robertson into the Oiler end and Bousard caught him. Knocked it loose and Robertson tried to wrap it but couldn’t get it around to the front of the net. And Pod calls it on the left wing inside the Oiler zone. Out to Ross Leavic in center now to Dry Sidle into the Dallas end. Dump the puck into the right wing corner. Ros Leavic to the right wing boards now to Dry Sidle. Has it on the right to the blue line in the middle. Nurse waits, doesn’t shoot to the left. The shot by Wman misses. Goes off the glass and down the ice. I think either of the two coaches will be particularly happy with the caliber of opportunities that have been there for both teams so far. High event one- nothing Oilers lead. Six and a half gone here in the opening period at center ice. McDavid will shoot it in to Smith plays it high on the glass. McDavid knocks it down on the right the right wing corner. New Hopkins to McDavid. He’s in behind the net over to the left. Lindell knocks him down. Penalty coming up. Essa Lindell as stars touch it. Edmonton is about to go on the power play. We will take a break. 6 minutes 52 seconds gone in the first. Oilers on the man advantage when we come back. Puck goes to the end boards. Ekhol battles there. So does Bard. It comes through the middle. Majapani out with Bard and twoon one. Popani over the line. Mine that hits a stick goes just wide. That was really well defended by Dallas. I I think Majapani made the right call. He just decided a little late to shoot the puck. Almost gave it away to Henry. And there’s too many men on the ice against Dallas. I think I think you’re right. Has to be 1027 to go here in the first. Two nothing Edmonton. Dallas bench minor and too many men on the ice. Time will come off the clock. in the first period. And the first period ends and the Edmonton Oilers have a two nothing lead here after 20 minutes over the Dallas Stars. Vasili Pod Coulson and Leon Dryside will the goal scorers. Stars with some pretty good chances really early in that period. Steuart Skinner called upon and then the Oilers with a couple of really nice goals. one on the power play. That was the dry sidle marker. But overall, I think the Edmonton Oilers going to be pretty happy with that period. Well, Jack Roselvic with a pair of primary assists in that period. Both of them really nice. You know who he reminds me of? Who’s that? A a right-handed shooting version of Joe Murphy. like he’s because he’s got skill that he can skate and I think he surprises he’s he’s stronger, you know, like he can hold guys off and fend guys off and he’s created a couple opportunities here as a result of that. So, and he had to work incredibly hard to set up both of those goals and if we can head downstairs. Jack Russell is with us. Jack, it’s Bob and Cam upstairs and a couple primary assists. But just, you know, where you at? Like how you feeling about your game right now that you’ve got a chance to to get up and running? I was looking pretty good playing with uh Leon and Vasil. Uh it’s just keep on uh you know, trying to prove what I got. You I’ve been doing that for as many years as I can count now. So just trying to play hard. Um didn’t like my effort last night. So just trying to get it back before we take three days off. What did you see in the first period from the Oilers? I think we played hard. Uh physical, kept it simple. Obviously, they’re a really good team, so they uh you know, had shifts where they pinned us in, but um I think we fought through it well and uh you know, it’s it sometimes is a is a good gauge, but uh they had zero goals, so you know, we uh got to just keep on doing the same thing. Jack, good players pass the puck hard. Brilliant players can take that pass and uh show elite level finish. Did you have to take a second look there from Leon Dry Settle or have you already seen enough to know that he can make that play? Yeah, I didn’t uh I I don’t know why he shot. He actually passed me one just like it, too. And I tried it. Didn’t go so well. So, uh I think I’ll leave that one to him and uh put that one back in uh the things to work on list. All right. Thanks, Jack. Thanks for doing this. There you go. J Jack Ross Levik downstairs. Uh yeah. Uh amazing goal by Leon Dryidle. Real sharp angle. Couple feet maybe off the goal line on a one-time and that made it two nothing. Oilers are up two nothing after 20. So yeah, good first period for Edmonton. Yeah, gave up a few chances early, but um showed some finish. Yeah, showed some finish. So that’s where we sit. We’re through 22 nothing. Oilers lead the Stars. Century Casinos with three great locations in Edmonton, St. Albert, and next to Edmonton International Airport. Welcome to the winner zone. Edmonton up two nothing after 20 minutes of play at American Airlines Center. Uh that goal you just heard there from a near impossible angle. Leon Dryidle on the power play as set up by Jack Rosavic. previous goal was Vasilip Pod Coulson as set up by Jack Rosavik who continues uh I would say he’s firmly entered into hot streak territory here Rob Brown and and looks comfortable in his skin as an Oiler. Yeah, he certainly has. you know, a lot of moves that were made uh in the summer and the addition, you know, you traded for Howard, you went and got Maja Pani, then you had Tamasa coming over, you got Seavoy, who you already expected in Philp and the one that has made the biggest impression this far was the guy they got late in was it I don’t even know was he even late in exhibition season. Yeah. And who didn’t have a training camp and he’s come in and been the most impressive of all the players. So, uh he’s looked good. But he’s looked comfortable. Uh obviously when you have expectations as he probably did in the summer of signing a long term or having what a number in your head and nothing comes, you’re thinking, “Okay, wait a second. I need a reset. So, I’m going to go and I mean, what better place to come to if you want to reset your career and get it going in the right path than to an Oiler team that has gone to the finals back to back years and you’re going to play with, you know, number one or 1A or 1B best player in the world. He’s taken full advantage of it. Uh he’s looked more more comfortable each and every game. And tonight, uh both plays that he made to set up goals are fantastic. And he’s had a couple other good looks, too. So, uh, Raj Le has been very, very good in his debut month with the Edmonton Islanders. Yeah, he he sure has. Dropped the shoulder down kind of looking like Dryidle does when Dry Cidle goes into that power stance and really shielding out the player. I didn’t see who he was carrying on his back, but it was a team Canada defenseman, Thomas Harley. That’s right. It was, wasn’t it? So, it wasn’t it wasn’t a nobody that he took to the net there. And and the point is he is driving hard to the net, which is something that we’ve asked the players to do. And particularly, Rob, before he started on this hot streak, we were asking him to get inside the game more. He was playing far too perimeter previously, and you look at how much success he’s having now, but you look at where he’s operating on the ice, and maybe there’s some correlation there. Yeah, I think he’s playing to his strengths now. I I think he’s trying to find his way. We thought he was perimeter to start with, but that also could have been the fact that he hadn’t played. He hadn’t been to a training camp, no exhibition games. Uh trying to find his footing here. Uh the goal that he set up today by Paken, it was he drove the net and one hand throws a bullet across Poulen which uh the goalender wasn’t quick enough to get across to. So um they have tried for the last couple years to find someone to play on the second line with Leon dry settle and from the outside I I’ve talked a lot about they haven’t had anyone that’s you know a pure offensive player. They’ve they’ve tried guys that you know work hard keep the plays alive but no finish. Rashik’s got finish and he also sees the game very well. And what I love the most, we’ve talked about it a lot. When you play with Connor and Leon, your first thought is, I got to get the puck to them. As soon as the puck comes stick, where are they? He doesn’t do that. He He looks for the best play. And if Leon’s the best play, great. But if there’s a better play, I’m going to make that one instead, which makes him more dangerous because now you can’t anticipate, okay, that guy’s got it. Where’s Leon? He’s making other plays. And the play made there to to put goals. And that was a wonderful pass. the play. He finally does find Leon on the power play and as he said in the little interview, uh that is there’s maybe three players in the NHL if that can score from where Leon was. Um he just makes it way looks way way too easy. So the power play now is 11 of its last 21 in the last eight games played. So we’re we’re at just about 50% in the last eight games. They are firmly fixed to top the NHL leaderboard in that realm. Uh Dallas did outshoot them in that opening frame. 11 to7 the shots on goal. Uh 28% in the faceoff circle though. Edmonton cleaned him up there which I I commented on off air to Rob and he said, “Well, yeah, you got to remember how many of Dallas’s centers are out of this game right now.” No kidding. They’re getting mopped up in the faceoff dot. So Edmonton 71% there. That’s an area where they’re going to be able to theoretically control things moving forward, I would think, as far as what needs to happen here in the final 40 minutes of play. Rob, a quick thought on that. Well, you don’t have to look too far back in your mirror to find out what it’s like having a two nothing lead and having it evaporate. They they were up two nothing in St. Louis, who is not as strong a team as the Dallas Stars, and St. Louis chipped away. Extending the lead would be huge. uh a 21 lead compared to a three nothing lead. Big difference in the confidence of the Dallas Stars. Uh don’t take penalties. Uh Dallas uh they have not scored on their power play, but they did everything but. So going forward, no big mistakes, no penalties will go a long way in securing a victory in Dallas. That’s our Rob Brown. More from Rob at the second intermission. Right now we’re after 20 minutes of play. And this is your Ford dealers NHL hockey on the Oilers radio network. The Liberal government’s 46 page federal budget includes almost $90 billion in net new spending items over 5 years while projecting a more than $78 billion total deficit, steadily decreasing no to more than 56 billion within 5 years. The new spending is aimed squarely at boosting productivity and funding cross-country infrastructure projects. Interim federal NDP leader Don Davies says his will take some time to consider whether it will support the budget with Conservative leader Pierre Polyv saying his party will not. And Paul got some bad news today losing a conservative MP after Chris Dontramont resigned reportedly crossing the floor to join the Liberals. It means the Liberal government is now just two votes shy of a majority and will still need help one way or another to get the budget passed. The Liberals also opened a door to ending the emissions cap in the federal budget today. Something the Alberta government along with the opposition conservatives have been demanding. The budget says a strengthened industrial carbon price, improved regulations to cut methane emissions, and scaling up the use of carbon capture and storage systems would eliminate the need for the emissions cap. Century Casinos. Three great locations in Edmonton, St. Albert and next to Edmonton International Airport. Welcome to the winners zone after 40 minutes of play. 2-1 the Oilers leading the Dallas Stars. Both of those goals coming in the first period of play for Edmonton. It was responded to by Mo Renin. I heard it was his 300th career goal. Uh there’s no way that was his 300th career point. So that must have been his his 300th career goal there as set up by Wyatt Johnson, Jason Robertson. It was a backhander on the power play. So each team with a power play goal as we engage our inside the game analyst Rob Brown. Uh not a lot really generated towards goal. Just five shots to speak of in that middle frame and yet they maintain the lead. Rob, they did because good goalending. Uh probably a couple good breaks defensively or with Dallas missing good chances. Uh Dallas was the better of the two teams that period and they were trailing so they needed to be. Uh we talked at the end of one, what do the Oilers have to do? We said, “Well, 3 nothing sounds a lot better than 2-1.” And they weren’t able to extend the lead. Dallas gets a power play. They take advantage of it. And now the the Edmonton Oilers uh have to come out with a better period. Uh they as they’ve shown anyone watching it on TV, seen the graphics. I think it’s five or six times this year they’ve given up two goal leads. Um they need to be better than they were in that period. They that’s they were relying too much on Steuart Skinner in that period. uh they need to play in the opposite end. They need to create more scoring chances. And in that period, penalties and turnovers allowed the Dallas Stars to get back in this hockey game. Yeah. Uh some blocked shots for Edmonton, too. 12 to five. They’re leading in the block shot column, but the the faceoff stat that they were absolutely dominating after the first period of play has swung uh into a level where it’s it’s quite a bit more even. So, Dallas was able to do some work in the dot and they’re holding Edmonton to uh very minimal shots. uh only pays for 18 right now so far. So uh you want to be more active in terms of what you’re getting on goal, especially facing their backup in Casey to Smith. Yeah, they haven’t tested him that much. I mean, you get a break, you don’t play Odder, who’s uh one of the best in the National Hockey League. So you get the backup goalender and what is it 13 shots on net through two periods. Uh not a lot of great A looks. Uh he got beat by a Leon shot. know a lot of Leon beats a lot of goalenders, but he got beat from the goal line on that shot. But really, I mean, I think what was about 12 13 minutes, they had one shot total on net. Uh, not near enough. And again, five on five just not generating when the Oilers are on the power play. Oh, do they look good. They look dangerous. But five on five not creating a whole lot. And I know there’s no Heyman in the lineup, but this is a team that should generate more than it is. And if you look at the team right now, I mean, the most noticeable player five on five is Jack Rosavik. And that’s good for Jack Rosavik, but is that good for for the Oilers is the the guy that had no training camp that was a free agent signing that couldn’t get a contract anywhere else is your most noticeable player. So, good on him. But in the third period, the got to be better. The Dallas Stars in that period were the better of the two teams. And if you spend as much time in your own zone as the Oilers did, eventually the puck’s going to find the back of the net. The Oilers got to play in the opposite end this this period. Yeah, they certainly do. And and you know, there hasn’t been too much to speak of for the fourth line. So then you start looking at the rest of the lineup. And I think to a man, uh, everybody’s got somewhere a different gear that they can get to five on five. and and you know that’s again I I look at Conor McDavid’s line, not necessarily Conor McDavid tonight. I think he’s been pretty noticeable for the right reasons, but that line can certainly do uh more to generate than it has been in recent games. I I I would think tonight would be a great time to start, especially here in this third period. Well, yes. I mean the the reason the Dallas Stars got back in this game, their number one line scored a goal was on a power play, but their number one line has been fantastic. Ranton uh is having a whale of a hockey game. Uh so the best line has to do that as well. Uh a quieter night for Maja Pani. Uh Newton Hopkins not genering as much five on five. Now they’re give credit to Heisken in on the back end who’s playing fantastic, but in this third period if the Oilers I I just don’t see this being a 2-1 victory. I think if you’re going to win this hockey game, you’re going to have to extend the lead. You’re going to have to play in Dallas’s end. Uh and to do that, it’s going to be have to be led by number 27 or number or sorry, number 97 or number 29. Those two guys are going to have to create here five on five. But you cannot take silly penalties. And some people might question, well, that’s a 50/50 cross check, but it’s been consistent. Both teams have been called for penalties for cross-checking that don’t normally get called or they’re iffy, but the ref is calling them. So, you know, if you do it, you’re going to get called, so stay out of the penalty box. Both teams, if either team takes a penalty in this period, guarantee the opposition’s going to score. That’s how good both teams power plays are. in an important moments as as we’ve seen in a two-1 hockey game, you can’t afford to put yourself and your team in that kind of position. Well, Dallas is playing so short-handed right now with respect to the bodies that they have. You don’t want to give them a chance to concentrate all their talent into one fiveman unit and let them go to work. You would rather have them try and disperse it and and you know, you rather face Sam Steel as your second line center than you would have their number one power play unit on the ice, obviously. Well, the Oilers should have a marked advantage, five on five. You know, the Dallas Stars have a very good first line with Ren and but you’re missing four players in the next nine or out of the lineup. You’ve got three, four guys that are playing in tonight’s lineup that would not be in this game up front. You got to take advantage of that if you’re the Edmonton Oilers. The Dallas Stars are going to get better as they get healthier. So, take advantage of a Dallas Star team that is not at its best. Uh, and I don’t know if the Oilers have five on five through the first 40 minutes. Shots 19 to 12, favoring the Dallas Stars. But the score is 2 to1 for your Edmonton Oilers after 40 minutes of play. That’s our inside the game analyst, Rob Brown. We’ll have more from Rob after this game. 7804518800 is the number you can text your thoughts into as we go along here tonight. We will address those in the post game. And we’ll be right back with your out of town scoreboard here on your Ford dealers NHL hockey on the Oilers radio network. And coming up a little later on tonight, you’ve got the ABS and Lightning, the Golden Knights and Red Wings, the uh Ducks and Panthers, and the Kings and Jets. One final to speak of. The Mammoth got past the Sabres in overtime as well. That was a 2-1 final. Oh, check that. We got another. The Hurricanes beat the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. So, uh, that is the out of town scoreboard. And again, I know I highlighted it last game as well, but the amount of games that we’ve seen go into extra time this season has been outstanding. It’s been uh I think somewhere like 33% of games over the 200 games that we’ve had so far have gone to extra time. It’s been uh unbelievable in terms of the parody in the NHL. And just check the standings if you don’t believe me. Your Oilers are in the middle of the standings right now. They’re looking to find some separation with a couple of points tonight. They’re twothirds of the way home with a 2-1 lead over the Dallas Stars. The goals coming from Vasili Pod Coulson and Leon Dryidle. Miko Rantin has cut that lead in half in the second period. Pod Coulson and Dry Cidle in the first for Edmonton. Rantin has the goal in the second for the Stars. as the Oilers will get the dry side Rosik Pod Kohl’s in line on the ice to start it off with Nurse and Wman and they’ll be up against the top line of the stars Johnston Robertson and Rand with Harley and Bishell on the back end. Well, this this line for Edmonton dry saddle Roselc and put Kohl’s in had a great game five on five. Russell got the primary assists on both goals. Made a brilliant play onehanded fielding, you know, basically fending off Thomas Harley and giving PCL in an open net and then dry settle just a sublime elite level finish on a crossse. Those are the two winners goals. We’re underway. Let’s see. Labushkin on the ice is down the left wing. A shot by Rosik goes off of Labushkin. comes out to Robertson. Cross ice for Johnston. He’ll rip a shot high and wide of the Edmonton net. Brandon to Johnston now to Robertson out to Johnston. He was in the slot. Missed him with a pass and that goes down the ice. Labushkin sets up comes out through the middle over to Harley on the right. Gave the puck to Bourke. He’ll in left wing corner. Bork after it for Dallas. Bousard gets control left wing to Majapani. Mapani had to go by him, but there is McDavid. Make sure it got out to Buchard. He’ll dump the puck in. He’s in behind the Dallas net. Give it away. Mjapani’s pass. That was blocked. New Hopkins will keep it in the zone for McDavid on the right wing boards. McDavid off the right wing side to the slot over to the left now. Ehol rips a shot. Save made by Smith. Just got enough of it and Steel will get it out. It’s center to Bouring over the line to Sean towards the Oiler net. Save made by Skinner and Majapani skates through center ice. Edmonton makes changes. Andrew Majapani by himself now through the middle. The shot by Seavoy and the save made by Dismiss. Seavoy had come out from the Oiler bench as Edmonton was making their change and was right through the middle. Put that shot on goal. I don’t think Seavoy realized how much time and space he had there. And I wonder whether or not that’s a play maybe he finishes in another half year. Now Bishel’s a ranging man at 6’6. Quick change here. Phelp I think Phelps had a good game and he’s right back out. Face off to the left to Smith. We’re a minute 29 into the third. Two to1 Edmonton leads. Petravic in behind his net. the right wing able to get it out. It’s just off of Blackwell. Regula at the Edmonson blue line. Right side off of Howard and in Kamashik runs into Petravic up the left wing. It’s Kovian got it out to center ice for the Stars. Puck the neutral zone as Blackwell spins through the middle, bounces it right to Skinner. Juggled it for a second. Now he covers it and there’ll be a face off the Oilers zone. Colin Blackwell played at Harvard. He’s a smart guy. No surprise there. He made his one goal that he scored for Dallas in the power in the playoffs count. It’s an OT winner. That’s pretty good. Face off to the right of Skinner. Shots are 20 to 14 for the Stars. Adam Ernie on the ice here for Dallas with Bastion and Sean goes all the way across to Seavoy the left wing to Frederick off his stick and into the star zone. Campo Biano got it out to set Rice. Bastion played it to the Edmonton blue line. Nurse bounces it out. Harley spinning around at center. Early’s a smooth player now. Brought in by Sean. Peeled off his stick by Walman. And Wman to get the puck to the neutral zone. And Stars bring it in. That’s offside call. One of those things the Oilers I was down at ice level and riding back with one of the coaches. He just said no odd man breaks. No kidding. Make him earn it. Yeah. And hopefully they’re able to tighten that up here in the third period. Last night though was a bit of a struggle. Dry settle wins a draw. There’s cross to Walman to Dry Cidle off his stick. Robertson to Johnston now on the right to Rant and into the slot. Nobody there for the Stars. Ros Levik to Dry Cidle at center ice rice. He’ll dump the puck in. Goes to the right wing. Boards now in behind the net. Rimmed on the left. Doesn’t get out. Kept in by the silly. Todd Coleman to the right wing point to Wman. Will shoot it. And it’s blockered away by to Smith. Rantin. Up in the air. Gloved down. Johnston to Robertson in the Oilers zone. Left wing for Hkin. Left wing corner for Robertson to Hastan in on the point. Oh man. It in behind the net. [Music] And off the right side, Fork will center it. Robertson shot. And a good save made by Skinner as Robertson with a point blank look. Dry side will get it out to center ice. Now to Rosavik into the star zone. Lift it high in the air. Go off for a change. Two to one. Oilers lead 3 minutes 40 seconds gone here in the third period. Bit of an I got it, you got it. Woman and nurse and nearly resulted in a Dallas high danger scoring opportunity. Work to the right wing corner in the Edmonton zone with that comb all over him and he pokes it free and it’s McDavid out through center through the middle now on the right to Newton Hopkins to McDavid back to the point but that gets picked off by Steel to Harley who’s jumped into the play. Harley on the right and that cross ice pass that comes out to a twoon-one for Edmonton. McDavid in over the line. The shot off the post and it goes right into the slot. Majapati couldn’t get his stick on it and Steel to center. Steel will dump it in. Great chance for the Oilers on a twoon one. And Conor McDavid rung it right off the post and it’s center ice. It’s Majapani to McDavid and Hopkins into the Stars and down the left wing. Fishell will take him to the boards. They’re pinned. Phil trying to dig out a loose puck. [Music] Still got it tied up in on the left hash marks in Stars territory and Petravic will go in behind the net now with it for Dallas up the left wing. It’s Kovian got to center Rice. Shoots it in. What a chance for McDavid. That’s the way it’s going for him right now. Regul to center. Blasted into the zone. Hamashik to the end boards. Petravic. He got it stripped off of his stick. Puck goes to the line and shot from the point off a body and wide from Kulak. Kept in the zone by Howard of the Oilers. Petravic will get it up the boards. Sebastian one hands it into the Edmonton end. Regula to Kulak will go in behind the net. 535 gone here in the third period. Two to one Edmonton leading. Long pass to Pod Coulson off his stick and in. Capo Biano up the right wing to Robertson. Couldn’t clear or to Johnston. Couldn’t clear. Puck in the left wing corner. Dryidle in behind the net to the right into the slot. It goes back to the line. Wman blasted on net and a kick save made by Smith. Shot from the left side to Smith. kept that out as Nurse put it on goal. It’s flipped to the line, kept in by Nurse. A shot blocked in front. Save now made by to Smith as it came in front of the net. And it was sitting there just for a moment for Ros Levik. We’re going to take a break. 6 minutes 12 seconds gone here in the third. Two to one. Oilers lead the Stars from the American Airlines Center in Dallas. It’s four dealers NHL hockey on the Oilers radio network. It’s time to sell Oiler stands. Two to1 Edmonton lead 612 gone here in the third period as they take on the Stars in Dallas. Face off to the right of the Smith. Conor McDavid ringing one off the post here in the third on a twoon-one break. The puck just inside the Stars line. Ernie on the left the left wing boards. [Music] Puck goes into the Edmonton zone with Covian on the left wing side. He gets dumped down. Puck comes free to Regula. Regula into the left wing corner through the middle right onto the tape of Seavoy. He’ll get to center ice off the left wing boards, but just too far for Henry. That’s the play that Regula can make that others can’t. Just will go cross ice. Brought in on the right. Sean the steel to the left side looking for Bour. Missed them. So Henrik or picked that Frederick up the left wing. Newton Hopkins now to where’s that going? Kulak and that’s off the boards. It’s not going to get out. Sean had kept it in. Tulac into the middle. And Majapani just got it out to the center ice area. Right back in is Bour. Bour on the left wing. To the left wing corner for Steel. Steel checked on the play by McDavid. Up the right wing for Nan Hopkins for McDavid. Off the boards and in. It’s deep in Stars territory. Sean up the right wing to Bourke. Two to one Edmonton here in the third. Stolen at center ice by Majapani into the star zone across the Nent Hopkins and McDavid scores. Conor McDavid gives the Oilers a 3-1 lead. Well, that was a great play by Majani as he with the steel butt hook quickly on the transition and then Nan Hopkins thread the needle and Conor McDavid elevated the puck high to a blocker side. No chance for Casey to Smith. Straight vision there by Conor Mat or by Ryan Nan Hopkins and Connor to his credit ripped one home and he looked like a guy that scored 60 goals once with that finish. He’s got seven points now in his last three games. He’s quietly heating up Cam. He is his fourth of the season at 751 of this third period. The Oilers take advantage of an oddman break. McDavid from Newton Hopkins. Majapani and Edmonton up 3-1 here in the third. Harley inside his line to Labushkin up the right wing. Goes into the Oilers zone. Rosik’s out with it for Dry Sidle. Cross ice pass in behind Pod Coulson. Oilers had to make sure they stayed on side. It’s dumped in. It goes off of Parley’s skate. Now Dry Sidle right wing to Walman. A shot and the save made by the Smith. It’s in behind the Stars net. Robertson up the left wing. He’ll get to center ice will dump it in. Rims goes off a skate. Dry side can get it out. Just missed. Rosik with it now. Cross ice pass out to Ratn. He scores. Wyatt Johnson got into it to Ratning in the slot in the Oilers zone and Edmonton lead is down to 3-2. Well, Leon Dryle turned the puck over. Had a chance to make a play up the middle of the ice to Rosel. He didn’t connect and then they came back on a threeon two. Leon knew it right away and Rent and finished it off. Just a little off of the pass and Dallas with a quick transition back the other way. And I’d say that was an unforced error that resulted in that. Just got to manage the puck. Second of the game for Randon. Seventh of the year. 837. Time of the goal. That puck dumped into the oiler zone. That went off the mesh. So Stars get it right back. And Petravic made a real good play. Getting the puck up the ice right away. And he gets the second assist. The Maple Leaf Athletic Club product. Yeah, but dumped into the Oilers zone in front of the net. The shot by Blackwell that was blocked and it goes out of play as Ritz Kovian gave it to him and Blackwell shot it. So, Randon from Johnston and Petravic at 837. Oh, 46 seconds after the Oiler goal. [Music] All right. Face off to the right of Skinner. Gets into the skates. Brent Koulak goes behind the net. Ernie will try to wrap it around. That goes off the stick and Skinner and jumping on it and getting out through center ice. Is Phil pushed it to the right wing corner. Ernie around the boards pinching in was Kulak. It went by him. It comes out all the way down into the Oilers zone. Rula up against the boards. Wyatt Johnston comes free. Frederick to Regula on the left wing for Kulak at center ice. Hast in softly gets the puck out. And it’s at the Edmonton blue line. Brought in by Sean. Goes down the left wing. A back end off the stick of McDavid. Goes to the right wing corner. Get back up against the boards. There’s a pass behind the goal broken up by Bousard will get it out to Newton Hopkins. Only got it to center. Steel will play it right back in. We’re almost to the halfway mark of the third. 3-2 Edmonton leads. Blackwell centering pass broken up. McDavid out through center ice. [Music] Harley with it inside his own zone for the Stars. the left wing to Robertson cross ice gave it away to Dry Sidle all the way over to Rosik shot off the glove to Smith. [Music] McDavid in the faceoff circle with Britz Kovian and the puck to the right wing side. Bashard got it off the glass and out. Now, we’ve done a lot of Oders now road trips over the years, including one to Dallas, but you’ve got some buddies here as well at uh some most of whom are retired members of uh various agencies. They made their own trip. They did uh Cowboys game last night, Stars game tonight. We will meet up with them after. I know one thing. We won’t see your credit card out. I even bring it with me on the road. Safer that way. Lindell inside his own line through the middle for Ranton and it missed him. It goes all the way down. That’s icing against the Stars. Boilers getting offensive zone. So, one thing that I think is going to help Dallas. Peter D’vor is a good coach. You know what happened here the last two years in the conference finals? He got a lot of attention that they don’t get because the Cowboys take so much oxygen out of the room year round. And then Dallas is in round three playing the Evston ways and we saw him get frustrated both years in the playoffs. He got kind of got into it with a writer when the writer questioned their character out there. They lost game five at home here in Dallas two years ago. Then of course last year you know second guessing the teams is randon. We’ll get the puck on the right to Robinson. Loose puck scores. Hast and followed it up and it bounced behind the net. Came right out to Hasten in and he ties the game at three. [Music] Could see that play developing. They got a good bounce off the backboards, but Nent Hopkins disappointed he wasn’t there to support the play. Moment stepped up. It was a twoon two through the new choice. Long range shot and nobody picked up H on the back side and N got in there late and and pulled they got a lucky break on the break. They did but he’s a good player. Yep. Smart gets his third of the year. 1220 time of the goal for Nero Heskaden. And the puck goes into the Stars bench. And this game’s tied at three. So for the first time, the Stars who’ve been trailing a lot of this game able to get it to even terms. Another twogoal lead blown by the Otters. Brandon’s having a great game. He’s got a an assist and two goals. Just assisted the last goal and the Oders have had a couple chances to I mean McDavid made the most of his 3-1 goal, but come on. Rman and Johnston get the assist. Quick shot on net off the draw to Smith the save. Flipped out to center. Play it in. That’s offside against Edmonton. Oh, I think Randon’s shot got blocked. Like partially deflected. Exactly. That changed the deflection off the backboard. Precisely. Skinner was out of position on the rebound. Well, the owners are going to have to dig in here no matter what. Cam Edmonton has to get a point in this game. Put the face off at center ice. Beck will shoot it into the Oiler bench. So, we’ll do that again. So, Hasten in from Ratnon and Johnston at 1220. Now, they’ve loaded up their three best players on one line. Everton has not done that. The others have stayed with McDavid centering one line, Brytle centering the other. [Music] Up the left wing, back off the left wing, boards it in. Dry saddle will go in behind the net. Punch will reverse it. Bashard got in there, but the puck stays in possession of the star. Steel on the left side around the right wing boards. Leoo’s going to come in. Gave it to Beck behind the net. Left side to Steel. The blue line to Harley. Harley down the left wing to Steel. Looks in front of the net to Beck. His shot goes off of Bousard and wide. It’s in behind the Edmonton goal. We’re tied at three here in the third. 640 to go in this third period. It’s up against the boards and behind the Edmonson net. It’s worked over to the right along the right wing. Still comes out right to Sean and his rising shot misses from behind the goal. Steel in front to Sean, but there was Pod Coulson to spin in behind the net. come up the right wing by pulls in pass to dry cidle and check at the blue line coming the other way for the stars give it to Robertson left side to Randon to Robertson a shot save made by Skinner he held on to it we’re going to take a break with 556 to go in the third this game tied at three from the American Airlines center in Dallas Sport dealers NHL hockey on the Oilers radio network. Henrik to win the draw. I would assume they get their two best. They get Johnson out there with Ranch. So this is a huge draw defensively for Henrik. It’s Nurse on the back end. Nurse going to skate onto this into the star zone with Nent Hopkins. The pass. Oh, it went on net. The save by Smith. Oh, that gets across. N Hopkins would had a great chance. Guys miss the too many men [Music] or they saying they want to race off of this. Yeah, maybe. 322 to go here in the OT. No, it’s going to it is going to move across. Leon Dryside lobbyed to move it across and they did. Now they got Sean. They’ve gone back to the 2D. Lindell and Hkinan. Well, yeah, cuz it’s dry sidel McDavid out there. And the Oilers win the draw. Harley takes him to the boards. Puck gets out to the middle and overtime ends. And we’re going to need a shootout to finish this thing off. [Music] Well, there was no shortage of things going on in that 5minute threeon three. That is about as well defended as we’ve seen anybody go against McDavid and dry cycle short of winning the draw and not giving up puck possession. The Oilers 0 and one in a shootout this year. The Stars are one and one. Steuart Skinner, three and five in his career in shootouts. I’m just looking up to Smith right here. He is three and nine. Three and nine. Yeah. [Music] Well, well, we know who’s going to take those first three shots. We would think it would be some combination of McDavid Dry Settle and Nent Hopkins. And I’d be inclined to have Roselvic take the fourth shot if it gets to that point. And for Dallas, you got to figure we’re looking at Brandon and Robertson and Wyatt Johnson. Then Tyler Sean’s also very good on shootouts. All right, looks like Robertson’s going to go first. [Music] He’s 56% in his career in shootouts. That’s all right. That’s it. 18 of 32. Yeah, that’s pretty good. Oh, actually, are the Oilers going first? They’re going first. Going to be McDavid. All right. Oilers will go first. remember uh McDavid beat Casey the Smith on a penalty shot a couple years ago when the Smith was with Pittsburgh. McDavid is 15 of 34 for 44% in his career. [Music] All right, they got it all set. The whistle is gone and here is Conor McDavid as he goes way to the left, right up against the boards. Now works back to the middle. He’ll go to the front and just Smith poked it off his stick. I love him. Okay, it’s good poke check. It is. But what do I tell what do I say in shootouts? Shoot. Don’t deep. Especially as the ice gets worse. This next guy’s going to shoot the puck. Robertson’s going to shoot it. All right. Eat of the 56% shootouts. Jason Robertson slows up. Wade shoots. scores went glove side and the stars are up one- nothing in the shootout as here comes Leon dry side [Music] 11 of 31 in his career for 35% is dry saddle that’s when he shoots from the top of the hash marks okay dry saddle in on the right wing. Slows up, gets to the middle, the backand scores as he goes to Forsber and he didn’t need the Forsber and just able to get it past the pad of dismant got a couple of goals in this game. Nine of 30 in his career in shootouts. through the middle will fake it and put it high and wide. That didn’t look like it was real close. Now RH has got a real good shot. Wants to go high glove side from about 25 to 30 ft out. All right, Newton Hopkins 15 to 44 in his career. So here’s it Hopkins slowly in quick shot and the save made by Rand or by to Smith as to Smith got it with his stick. Tried to go low stick side. And here’s Johnson. So he called the first three shooters for both teams. This guy’s a tricky player and he’s a right
