You Weren’t Supposed To Notice…
You weren’t supposed to notice, but the New Orleans Pelicans are one game away from something we like to call in the business, a winning streak. And they’re doing it without their big money players. We’re going to recap last night’s Dallas win inside this edition of Bellicus Digest. What’s good with it y’all? It’s your people Mel of the Mic back once again inside Bellicus Digest. Thank you once again for ch uh checking in with your boy and thank you once again for subscribing. So, thank you. If you haven’t done it yet though, go ahead and hit that subscribe button. This is where you get the best analysis, opinions, and more about the New Orleans Pelicans right here on Pelicans Digest. It’s Mel talking about those pels and to quote uh a great major league manager from back in the day, Lou Brown. Uh you win a game on Tuesday, you win another one on Wednesday, that’s two in a row. You win one tomorrow against the Spurs. That’s what they call the business of winning streak. And it has happened before. And uh again, what’s great about this with the Pelicans right now is you’re doing all this without Zion Williamson. You’re doing this without Jordan Bull. You’re doing this without the players that you thought and you uh was going to be key contributors to this team and be the franchise leaders on this team. Instead, your bench and your depth is something that we have been raving about before the start of the season is coming through and and shining bright for this team. Um and you love to see it, man. And the rookies are also progressing at a great rate, including Derek Queen. Another great night for Derek Queen. No, the stats, you know, he’s not doing EJ Edgecom numbers and everybody else, but he’s doing what he’s supposed to do to help contribute to this team and get it to the W, especially in the fourth quarter. Now, I don’t know why Willie Well, I kind of do know why. I kind of do know why. I kind of do know why they’re giving him most most of his minutes in the force. It’s because kid ain’t in great condition yet. Okay. He’s not in I don’t think he’s in great condition to play yet as far as an entire 82 game season and the up and down of the floor that he’s been doing. He’s been showing that he’s fatigued. If you put him in in the second or third quarter, let him put him in the fourth quarter and let him use his youth, whatever little youthful energy he’s got to to get us where we need to be. And last night it’s it proved once again that that this sort of way may be working for the time being with Derek Queen. Queen played 12 minutes in the fourth quarter for a second consecutive night of a win. The 20-year-old rookie continues to show a versatile game that allows him to help his team in various categories, locking a total of 46 minutes in the back-to-back wins. He’s total 23 points, 15 rebounds, nine assists, and seven steals. Fantastic numbers, man. Just fantastic numbers for Derek Queen. And once again, I am of the firm belief that one of the reasons why Derek Queen is being successful, even though I don’t like him playing the five and especially over these last two games, is because of Jose Alvarado. And we’ve been clear on that. I think Jos Alvarado, again, his direction, his leadership, his guidance is helping him out on the floor. And last night, I was at the game at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. Uh, real quick, let me shout out my folks. Big shout out to my sister Shaie Scott. Thank you so much and happy birthday to you sis uh for the tickets and also my radio one family in Dallas. Thank y’all so much for the hook up on the tickets. Great time last night talking trash with the mass fans. Uh who and y’all going to be all right mass fans just relax. You know y’all going through the same stress troubles we going through. Uh but um one of the reasons one of the things that I saw last night with Derek Queen was he got more help from the team despite the fact that this offense is still kind of stagnant. I still don’t understand why we was taking so long especially in the second half to get a shot off. They were taking like 22 minutes Tom I mean I’m sorry 22 seconds per possession to get a shot off and that was in and misleading. I think we had like three or four shot clock violations in the fourth quarter alone. So despite all that, Jose Alvarado is helping this kid out. DeAndre Jordan giving him the guy releases, telling him to stand up on your business and do interviews. He’s getting the help that he’s needing and you can see his confidence is growing by each and every single game. Also, last night, you know, uh I I can’t remember who they played at the five for Dallas, but he was able to work. Uh it was a good matchup for Queen because D doesn’t really have any real offensive rebounding or defensive rebounding or no real bigs outside of Flag. So Queen was once again you can was able to cook and expose that and was able to work last night and it came out with with great results. Um, also last night when I was in the arena at American Airlines Center, we saw our first action of Micah Peavey, which is what we’ve been demanding as well. Put Peavey out there. Let’s get Beey’s shot over Jordan Hawkins. And last night, the two of them had to split their minutes, which I I don’t know if you will. You had I was annoyed at certain points of the game whenever I think there was a point in maybe the second or third quarter. I’m trying to remember when he had Peavey and Hawkins together on the floor at the same time and I was kind of annoyed by that because I get it. Hawkins was scoring. Hawkins finished the game with nine points and here’s the details on that. John Hawkins, he had nine points in 20 minutes and rookie wing Michael Beey, he played 18 minutes respectfully. Both young players were invaluable in New Orleans picking up another win even if their stats may not jump off the page. And that’s correct. The stats didn’t jump off the plays, but they were instrumental in this game. Jordan Moore for his scoring cuz he scored at great opportunities. But there were some shots he was taking that had me screaming up in there. No. Yeah, he was taking some shots. Some of those those weird sideways fadeaways. You know, y’all seen how he does that from time to time. He’ll like get into the paint. if he can’t get out the three-point line, he’ll get out uh he’ll he’ll skate across the lane and try to hit this lean away hate away jumper for some reason like he Kobe or something. I I don’t know. And so some of those shots were weird that he was taken. But Peavey on the other hand, why he didn’t score, his defense was there. Whoever they put bee again was in front of whoever we always been screaming about beey. We’ve seen the defensive prowess. And I think in this particular game, in the 18 minutes that he played, he was put in in crucial moments where his his defense was needed more so than his offense. I still would like to see Peavey get more minutes over Hawkins because Peavey can get some scoring in. He can score if you give him a shot, but I think he’s not. But he’s much more conservative with his shooting and understands his role as opposed to Jordan who’s going to go shoot first. I’m trying to shoot first. I’m trying to score first. Defense, defense, I I I’ll try. I’ll give it a shot. I’ll give it the old Yukon try. But I but defense h I’m I’m I’m trying to score. So, you know, I was really annoyed with that last night though. You probably saw it in one of the shorts. Why is Jo Hawkins getting so many minutes? Let Bevy get some more minutes in. But at the same time, you know, it still turned out well, you know, so I’m not going to make a big deal about that. But I’m glad PV is starting to get the minutes like we asked and we hoped for. Danny, the whole roster got in last night if you didn’t know. outside of the guys that were hurt. Uh, everybody got the blade last night except Bryce McGovern and DeAndre Jordan. Well, and as you know, DeAndre Jordan, as we see now, instead of putting him in the games now, you see what he’s being used at. If you seen some of these social media videos and his content about DeAndre Jordan, he’s being used to as the veteran that y’all have asked for. A lot of y’all before the season was saying, “We need some sort of veteran on this team because a lot of these guys are all still in their mid20s.” So, you got the veteran leadership you wanted DeAndre Jordan without the minutes. All right. I I hope they free up the roster spot and just give him a coaching job. Just hurry up a roster spot and see if we can go get somebody and give him a coaching job at this point. Uh, but the star last night was somebody I was big on before the season. Somebody that I said would be an X factor at certain points in the season. because his offense was going to be needed and also now his defensive grit is being needed and we got to clap it up with Sadique Bay. Man, I then said this all the season that Sadique Bay was probably one of the sneakier sneakier moves in the Jordan pool package trade that we got that I think a lot of people are overlooking and he came through last night in a big way. Sadique moved into the first unit and registered 22 points and nine rebounds, scoring a critical hoop to give the Pelicans uh a lead uh 98 95 lead in the final minutes. And I again, I’ve been saying this, I’ve been big on Sadique Bay. I I was so glad that we that that was part of the short pool package. I think if anything that is the package that you will want to hang on to cuz at this point if the Pelicans can keep this up cuz what happened last night was also a more of a team game. Everybody contributed. Trey had 11 points. Herb had 12 points. Versus had 13 points. That’s your starting five. Looney, even though he had eight points, still gave you six rebounds, which is one of the reasons why I said Looney, despite his, what you may feel about his lack of whatever on offense, his rebounding is needed. Those second I finally saw chances with Bell the Bellicans has second and third and fourth opportunities in the game. I finally saw that. I think in the one sequence, I think they had like three opportunities. And even though they blew it, just having those opportunities lead to more points and more opportunities for us to win. So again, a overall great team game last night when the Bellicans, even though the Mavericks are short-handed. And another thing I was I’m starting to get cranky about was last night with last night was how dominant we was in the rebounding. Speaking of Looney and that rebounding 56 to 44 in rebounding, we got to I have I can we run a two big lineup sometimes, please. So we can get those rebounds. You dominated against a Dallas team. Yes, they were short-handed, but I mean, going into the fourth, I think the Pelicans uh had was still like more than had more than double the rebounds that uh Dallas had. And granted, it didn’t come without running a two big lineup, but imagine if you did run a two big lineup. Well, imagine if you did with Queen and Mooney out there together with Bay. I get it that in certain situations and yes you have heard about that but in certain situations I I the main thing that again concerns me is this team is still letting uh uh teams back in it especially in the third quarter. Now in the third quarter they played a little bit better this time but it’s still it was still the same thing. It it didn’t dawn on me because I was so caught up in my fandom at the game last night that we were that it was the third quarter and and the Bells came out looking the same way they always do in the third quarter. And we got to figure that out. But but I think I think as as this continues on, you going to have to really consider moving that second unit up to the first. But last night, the first unit came out and jumped out over Dallas. I was very pleased with that. Uh, but you still might have to consider this, man. You still might have to consider Jose Avar at point. And you also may have to consider putting a a package together of Zion and Jordan Pool and seeing if anybody’s going to take it. We’ll talk about that another day. Right now, let’s enjoy the W and hopefully and also enjoy not being in last place in the Western Conference. Sorry, Dallas. Somebody got to be there. We ain’t in last place no more. So, what do you think? What how were your thoughts on last night’s game against Dallas? What did you like and what did you see? What didn’t you like? What didn’t you see? What didn’t you like? What didn’t you wasn’t cool with? Clap back with your thoughts in the comments. And yes, we going to talk about whether or not we need to start considering Zion and Pool and getting rid of all these big money players and letting these these guys that we ain’t paying that much get busy and cook. Clap back with your thoughts in the comments. Don’t forget to subscribe to Pelicans Digest. This is where you get the best analysis, opinions, and more about the New Orleans Pelicans is males.

Poole played vs the hornets. He only missed the mavs game. Not fair to say we’re winning without him. Let’s be real, hornets aren’t good and they were short handed. Mavs decent but short handed. Let’s see if we can get a win vs Spurs, suns lakers warriors without Zion.
Yes brother when we play as a team we can compete with anyone
Mel they are lucky, I was about to bring you in on a 10 day contract Mel’s on dem Pels
The more games these guys play together, the more they gonna learn about each other. You gotta realize their got a lot of new faces on his team And as bad as they look they're only one game out of 8 place
I don't think Peavy is ready to contribute beyond his defense. While Hawkins is a liability on defense and a streaky shooter at best, I think Willie managed his talent and minutes well.
I also like that Willie was brave enough to sit the turnover magnet Fears in the 4th quarter. Willie didn't listen to the media being forced to play Jordan with Missi out. He also understood that this wasn't Matkivich's night so he didn't play him too much. Solid decision making Willie. After all the fire talk, take a breather.
Gafford at 5 a good player still bbq chicken
Nah Hawkins defensive effort last night was a lot better. He was hustling on both sides of the ball last night. The whole team defense was better.
This guy sounds like somebody?! 🤔
Your last comments were soft asf you would rather trade your talent than keep pushing to fire a trash ass brainless coach who said himself that the players pulled out these two win so disappointing
Send DM and Poole for JA
I would rather see DM,Poole, and hawk leave, rather then getting rid of Zion.. Don't get me wrong I like Poole but he takes way to many dumb shots early in shot clock or damn near half court shots with no ball movement that he thinks he can make…
DM I think his glory days are over, not impressed with what I have seen since we acquired him, and look what we gave up to get him smh
Hawkins I don't know where to start not sure what he needs doesn't seem like he is the first round pick player we drafted I had high hopes for him
@Mel I agree with your Jordan comments we need the veteran presence, but why the hell is he getting zero minutes, Honestly I would rather see him in there over looney he has way more scoring ability than looney and still can get the boards.. just look at the tiny minutes Greene put him in he was a beast
Great content mel
Ur bio needs to be updated bro. Out GM has changed and CJ is gone 🤷🏽♂️
Yo Melz I disagree with you on the Jose starting front. i think Jose is in his proper role as a back up PG but he closes well for us. Id say let Fears continue to start, I do agree with you on the 2 big lineup. Green kinda scare me when it comes to Queen's development. I just dont trust him to put him in the right position which is the 4 like you said
Saddiq Bey is 26. You’d think he was at least 30. I really like his game and leadership
Deandre Jordan showing them boys how to rebound
but that was hawkins role sir. the team need to let hawkins do his thing and his shots will eventually fall. imo, you play hawkins like how you would play ray allen when he was playing. you let him run, catch and shoot.
It’s time we let go of this Zion experiment. We got Poole which I believe is a good thing all we need is a true big man now
During one of the preseason games here in the US, I asked "did anyone see when we had three bigs on the court together?" They were dominant that night for the short minutes they were in there. Good podcast, and hoping to be scary competitive against a good Spurs team.
