Milwaukee Brewers Rookie of the Year Candidates REVEAL Why This Team’s Future is very Bright

Caleb Durban does not win Rookie of the Year, but the voting for rookie of the year shows us that the Brewers have a very bright future. You are Locked On Brewers, your daily Milwaukee Brewers podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. Great to have you along here on a Monday. My name is Chuck Freeman, longtime sports cer here in the state of Wisconsin. and proud of working for Locked On Brewers, part of Locked On Network. We are your team every day. Locked on Network, the number one sports podcasting network out there. Great to be a part of it and appreciate you for being along for the ride as well. Coming up on the show, Durban. Yeah, he doesn’t win rookie of the year, but it shows plenty on how things should go for in the future for the Milwaukee Brewers. Freddy Peralta could be staying a Milwaukee Brewer going into a contract year. According to one baseball insider, David Gasper, who covers the Brewers from the game in the state of Wisconsin, he’ll join us. We’ll talk some Brewers free agency and who they might be interested out there. Well, the voting came down tonight regarding Rookie of the Year and all these postseason awards will be rolled out here in the next few days in weeks or so. And Caleb Durban finished in third place for rookie of the year. Drake Baldwin finished in first. He won it. Madison West, great graduate, state of Wisconsin, 19 homers, rookie of the year. Deserved it. There’s no doubt about it. Uh Caleb Durban, certainly you can make an argument for him for rookie of the year. But the fact that what’s even more impressive to me is that four Milwaukee Brewers got votes for rookie of the year. Four of them. Four. Now, Isaac Collins, I thought for most of the summer was the favorite. And I even said here on the show, what about Caleb Durban? How come he’s not being considered? Durban passed up Collins. Collins was fourth in the voting. And then Jacob Miserowski and Chad Patrick also got votes. I mean, the Brewers were so represented represented so well in this. Um, and rightfully so, because all these guys played huge parts, some more than others, in the Brewers getting the 97 wins this year, right? Caleb Durban over at third base. Caleb Durban, they put him over at third base and he excelled. He excelled. Now, I remember back in the off season when Boone, the Yankee general uh Yankee manager, was talking about Durban. He said, and I didn’t know if it was lip service at the time or not, and he might have been bulking Durban up for the trade market, but he was talking about Durban in the offseason before he got traded to Milwaukee about how yeah, he could be a part of uh of the Yankees infield in 2025. And I believe that was at the baseball winner meetings he was talking about that and I heard that and I’m like come on. I mean Caleb Durban’s going to crack the New York Yankees and then he got here and he got called up. I started the year in the minor called up and I thought he was fantastic all season long. Exceeded my expectations. Exceeded far exceeded my expectations. In fact, him and I Collins, two guys in this team who far away exceeded anything I thought. I I did not want to put Durban over at third base. I thought he was too small to play over there, but he handled that like Cal Ripken Jr. over at third base. He was doing everything over at third base and getting the job done. And I thought he was great. And offensively, clutch moments. You know how big I am on clutch moments. You know, you can put up all the nice pretty little numbers all year long, but if you don’t come through in the clutch and deliver in big moments, doesn’t matter a hill of beans if you bet 325 or not, but I want to see you come through and deliver when it counts most. And he did that. And you know what? He didn’t strike out a lot either. He didn’t strike out a lot. 256, 11 homers, 18 stolen bases, 53 RBI’s. That’s a pretty good starting point for Caleb Durban. And Caleb has definitely earned a starting spot on this team going into the next year. There’s no doubt about it. Isaac Collins, who finished fourth, how about that? Isaac Collins, who finished fourth in the Rookie of the Year voting, might be the fourth outfielder on the Brewers next year. Normally, you finish in the top four of rookie of the year. You’re going to play a prominent role on the team. He might not be. Well, he wasn’t toward the end of the season. Might not be uh the fourth. He might be the fifth outfielder on this team. Might be the fifth outfielder on this team depending how it shakes out if everybody’s healthy. And if Garrett Mitchell comes back, who knows? I’m not counting on Garrett Mitchell. I like Isaac Collins. And I said I wanted that guy playing more in the postseason. Yeah, he wasn’t the same guy after he came back from um paternity leave. He just didn’t produce as much and his playing his at bats diminished and his defense suffered as well. But I like Guy Collins now. We’ll know going we’ll know next year whether he was just a flash in the pan or he’s the real deal because again he’s a guy who’s we you might think a late bloomer. I like him now. Same thing with all these guys, right? Caleb Durban. I I said he he’ll get a starting spot next year, but I’ve seen it where guys have been up for rookie of the year, Pat Listache, a long time ago and won it and never materialized, never did anything after the rookie year. So, it’s up to Durban and Collins to continue to get better. And Collins has got more to prove because he lost his uh playing time at the end of the season there. So, we’ll see. Um guy we never talked about in the offseason last year, but I Collins big moments. What always sticks in my mind regarding Isaac Collins is the home run that he hit against the Mets. But I want I Collins part of this. He’s part of the grit of this team. There’s certain guys who are part of the grit of this team. And when I say that, guys who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty, right? You could say Sal Felic is one of them. You could say Caleb Dorbid is one of them. And um Terang is one of them. Uh Monisterio is one of them. Although he’s a utility guy, we we like Monisterio on this team, but you know, he’s not a afraid to get his hands dirty either. And uh I’m missing one more out of there. Uh Collins, Durban, Terang, and Freelick of all four of those guys and Monasterio. There’s others as well, but I when I think of guys who are gritty players, you need some guys like that. But you also need superstars. You need guys who are going to not going to be afraid to get their hands dirty like those guys. But then you also need superstars on this team. And then the other guys getting votes. Uh Miserowski going to be a starter I think next year in the rotation. No doubt about that. And Chad Patrick still a question mark on whether he’s going to start or come out of the bullpen. I thought he was best used this year coming out of the bullpen. I thought he was really good. But we’ll see where he is needed on this team. All right. So that’s what happened with the rookie of the year and I think that bodess well for the future of the Brewers because the Brewers won 97 games and they won with young guys this year. always said if you could win and continue to develop players like the Brewers are doing, that’s a good thing. It’s one thing to win 97 games with a veteran team, an old aging team. Okay, the 82 Brewers won with an older team for the most part. And I’m not comparing these guys to the 82 Brewers, although I have in the past, but uh the 97 Brewers who won the most games in Brewers history, um they uh got a young team and that when you win with a young team like that, that gets you excited uh going in the next year. Now you just got to do a few things to fortify other parts of this team where you know maybe we thought were strengths that uh are or can we a few areas they can improve in uh Freddy Peralta. Oh Freddy’s name is always in the news I feel these days. Uh he’s the number one topic out there as far as an offseason rumble. Uh when I say rumble you know chatter out there by uh us media folks and all that. saw one report that oh the ball you know again these Nashville guys look at the Milwaukee Brewers as you know like fantasy baseball like they can just come over and take our guys and draft our guys and and we’re just giving these guys away but you know the one writer um Morosi says Boston could really use Freddy Peralta and the Red Sox got some infielders Abrau and Duran who the Brewers could be interested in. All right, we could talk about that. But then Nightingale, Bob Nightingale, who’s around the Brewers a lot. He was around Milwaukee a lot in the postseason. Uh I feel like the national guys, Bob Nightingale has got his hands on the Milwaukee Brewers, his fingerprints on the Milwaukee Brewers. In fact, I think I’m going to try to get him on a podcast coming up this winter. Um he says the Brewers he he reported today that the Brewers are are leaning or are going to keep Peralta are going to keep Peralta and that’s a good thing right that’s a real good thing keep Peralta and run it back one time with him on the 8 million and then if you’re not in the race in July trade them just trade them right just trade them but I’m all for keeping Peralta on this team one more season. One more season. All right, we come back, we’ll talk about a couple of these topics. Uh Freddy Peralta, the rumblings out there regarding him. Uh couple of rumors regarding the Chicago Cubs we’ll get to as well. And what will the Brewers do in free agency? We’ll talk about all that coming up next with our guy Dave Casper, friend of the show from the game covers the Milwaukee Brewers. That’s next here on Lockdown Brewers. Covers the Brewers on a regular basis and friend of show, friend of mine and friend of show. David, appreciate you coming on. It’s been about six weeks since we talked. I looked and I was like, man, it was uh it’s been a while. Playoff run for the Brewers. Want to get your take on on how you thought things ended against the Dodgers in as far as 97 wins and a second round exit. Yeah, it was certainly a tough way to go losing four in a row there to the Dodgers, not getting anything going offensively and I mean it was still a successful season. I mean being able to make it back to the NLCS um being able to win a playoff round, win a playoff series, which they haven’t done since 2018. Uh I think that’s definitely a positive for the Brewers to take from this. Um and just really kind of the steps forward this organization took. Now, you know, yeah, the way that the season ended against the Dodgers was not really how you wanted get your doors blown off by one plus billion dollars in in pitching contracts. Um, but in a sense, I’d almost rather have that than what the Blue Jays had where they had two chances to win it. They were right there. They were so they were literally an inch from winning that World Series and they end up losing. That is a brutal way to lose. So, I’ I’d much rather have getting my doors blown off and and losing in four any day than what the Blue Jays fans just went through. To me, losing is losing. And I said that second round, but it was actually the third round because they had a buy in the first round. So, I guess the NLCS technically is the third round of the uh the playoffs. So, do you look at this guess as as saying that the Brewers can never get by the Dodgers because of that payroll or is that a case where until there’s an even system in Major League Baseball, the Brewers can never conquer this thing? I mean, you never want to say never be because it is baseball and things can happen. Uh, but I I have made the call for making a more even system, making a salary cap, putting that in place. you know, it’s going to be a long drawn out, bloody battle. You know, it’s likely going to cost you the entire 2027 season in order to make that happen. Um, but I think it it certainly is time. I think it certainly is something that needs to happen uh to give the Brewers an actual more legitimate chance uh to pass the Dodgers in a series like that because when you’re facing $1 billion just in pitching contracts, I mean, we saw it in game seven. It was a billion dollars worth of pitching just in that game alone. um went with the starters they were putting out there and there is zero chance that the Brewers have to compete with that. They don’t have the resources, they don’t have the money uh to put together that kind of a roster where you got three SI Young winners, you got three MVPs at top your lineup. Um it’s impossible to to compete with uh on paper there. And like yes, you can maximize as much as you can to get to 97 wins, get yourself to the NLCS. Uh, but we saw just how far that can actually get you. Um, when you’re facing a team like the Dodgers who when they have all their pieces like that, it is it is so immensely difficult to get over that hump. So, I never want to say never, but you got to see a better system for for Major League Baseball because the economics of it are just tilted all towards the Dodgers. Well, the problem with this gas is uh anytime someone gets into a contract here where there’s Deon Williams, Corbin Burns now faced with that with Freddy Peralta, uh the Brewers are in a situation, well, well, they’re not going to resign him. So, are they going to trade him or hold on for another year? Those big market teams, they don’t look at it that way. Yeah. No, they don’t have to. I mean, they can look at Maxy making $10 million and yeah, sure, we’ll pick it up. Um because, you know, an extra $10 million, whatever. They’re not too worried about it. Meanwhile, the Brewers are declining William Contrus’s option for $12 million because they see his arbitration projection at $11 million. So, you can save $1 million. The Dodgers wouldn’t have to worry about that. They’d just pick up the option, it’d be whatever. The Brewers, meanwhile, have to save as much as they can. Um, so if they can get Contraras for $1 million cheaper, then they’re going to have to do that. And if they have to trade Freddy Peralta because they know they’re not going to sign him to to that contract, he’s going to get $30 million a season. The Brewers are not going to be paying Freddy Peralta $30 million a season. There’s no way. So yeah, they have to go about things differently than other teams in the league. And it just doesn’t seem like the the right system to have when everyone’s basically having to play by different rules. You know, it’s funny. I just got this mandate for the Milwaukee Brewers. I don’t know if you got the news, but you’re on the list. Says, uh, the following people are not allowed to have seconds in the media media room for dinner, and you’re on that list. Okay. So, that’s coming back. You are on that list, Gas. One and done for you. One meal. Okay. Well, first of all, I think Lorraine likes me too much to actually uh to pull that on me. So, I can I can certainly try to find a way to to work around that. But, uh, if anything, I’m the one that they’re going to tell that I need to go get seconds for. Possibly. Maybe they want to use you as the left-handed arm coming out of the bullpen at 67. Hey, Gas, that’d be fine. I’d do that for 750,000 a year. So, free or or free seconds in the media room, right? Or free second. Sure, I’ll need. I mean, you need a you need a batting practice arm. I mean, I’ll volunteer that for for Pat Murphy. Oh, there we go. There we go. Yeah. not the they wouldn’t have to work out any other pitchers. They just have you come in and you’re you’re there for pregame anyway. So, Peralta. Okay. While we’re on the subject of Peralta, what do you think is going to happen here? Well, uh I think Peralta is going to end up staying. Uh just with the the reports that that we’ve been seeing, Bob Nightingale putting out there that the Brewers are planning on keeping Freddy Peralta. Um, you know, I’ve leaned just slightly towards him staying about 519 as I’ve been saying that that he’s going to stay versus him going. And I mean, just with what he means to that clubhouse, what he means uh to that rotation, I think you have to have him coming back. And the Brewers have control over whether or not Peralta stays or goes. And with Brandon Woodruff, uh the other veteran starter that the Brewers have, they don’t have as much control over whether Woodruff stays or goes. They’ve given him the qualifying offer, but he is a free agent and he can sign elsewhere. And if another team puts in a better offer than the Brewers, then there’s very good chance that Woodruff leaves. And I think you got to have at least one of those two back in that rotation for next year to lead this young group to be there for the Quinn Priesters, the Jacob Esskis, the the Chad Patrick’s, and and Robert Gasters of the world. I think you got to have one of those two veteran starters and you have full control over what happens with Peralta. You don’t have full control over what happens with Woodruff. So, right now I’m leaning towards Peralta is going to stay. Now, if Brandon Woodruff resigns with the Brewers, then maybe it becomes more possible that Peralta ends up getting moved. But, uh, for right now, the way I’m seeing it, I think Peralta is going to stay. I want to run it back for one more season as I want him to stay. I just have a feeling they’re going to trade him because they’re going to try to stack up the draft pick again and uh and they’re going to lose him. They they know they’re not going to sign him to a contract extension. But on um on the other hand, I would love to keep him because let’s say you’re not in the race mid July, then you could trade him that way. Yeah, that’s true. I mean, there’s always that possibility that the Brewers are are out of it. And now we said that for the last couple of years, if the Brewers are out of it in July, they can trade them. And then lo and behold, here comes July and the Brewers are in first place. and they don’t end up uh being in a position to trade him. They tried that once with Josh her uh being in first place and trading a guy heading towards free agency and that did not really go over well. So, I think they’ve learned their lesson from that one. Um, and yeah, I think really the only question is whether or not the Brewers uh believe in Peralta fully as that Willie Adamus comp where they kept Adamus until free agency because they knew how valuable he was to that clubhouse and how important it was to have him on that team. But Adamus was a position player playing every single day. Peralta is a starter, plays every fifth day. Uh, so a little bit different in terms of valuation. If Peralta gets hurt, completely changes what you could possibly get for him. Now, even if he is hurt, I think Peralta is still going to get a contract above $50 million. So, you would still get that top draft pick um if you give him that qualifying offer next off season. So, uh I I’m still leaning in favor towards towards holding him. Uh but because he is a pitcher and because that value can change so much with an arm injury, uh I think there’s also uh a decent chance that he ends up getting moved. We come back, will the Brewers do anything in free agency? will ask us about that. Uh we’ll get to that coming up next here on Lockdown Brewers. Lockdown Brewers part of Lockdown Podcast Network. Great to have Dave Casper here on a Monday talking some Brewers baseball. What is it usually a Packer Monday in the state, but we’re making it a Brewer Monday here in the state of Wisconsin. You know, you mentioned Woodruff a little while ago. uh again the $10 million from last year on the on the buyout picked up the option at 20 million. Is he going to come in at 32 million? He’s already cost the brewers 10. Is he uh is he going to what do you think he’s going to do in that situation? Or is he looking for a long-term you hear on the market that maybe three or 75 million might be the way to go? Yeah, I I think for I mean for for the option uh the the $10 million was already kind of baked in for the brewers. So, I don’t think they’re they’re that worried about him getting $32 million or something over that year. And I’m not really sure that Woodruff is looking at it that way either. I think Woodruff uh it’s more on the latter point there where he’s looking towards a long-term deal. Uh because this is in all likelihood his last chance to get a multi-year deal. I mean, you’re you’re coming off of, you know, shoulder surgery. You finally came back. You proved you were healthy and you still got it. You can still get outs. um you can still be effective as a starter coming off that devastating shoulder injury. Um you know, even though the fast ball velocity was down a little bit, as you get further away, perhaps that velocity can tick back up. And uh, you know, even still, he’s proven he’s effective. So, I think a two to threeyear deal is something that’s well within reasonable expectations for Brandon Woodruff. And also, I think it is something that the Brewers would be willing to do. Uh, I think the Brewers would be willing to look at a two or threeyear deal for Brandon Woodruff. I don’t see four years happening and now with him entering his age 33 season and and that kind of injury history, I don’t see four years guaranteed coming from the Brewers or really anyone. Um, but two to three years I think is a definite possibility. it’s his best chance to cash in on that kind of a deal because if he takes the qualifying offer then hits the free agent market again next off season, you know, heading into his age 34 year, it’s going to be that much more difficult to get the extra years to to get the multi-year deals for him. So, this is really, I think, his best chance to cash in. I think he ultimately ends up rejecting the qualifying offer and finding a multi-year deal on the market. When healthy, he’s worth every dime. three 75 million worth every dime. The problem I have, Dave, is if he doesn’t stay healthy and you’re the Brewers and you signed with two even a two-year deal, man, that’s an awful lot of money to suck up if he only you only get a handful of starts over two years on the guy. Yeah, it is. Um, but I mean that that’s a risk with with anyone. I mean, the Brewers have seen Christian Yellet miss a lot of time with injury. Um, and they’ve been paying him $26 million a season. Um, and and it is tough, but that’s that’s really what it is when it comes to pitching, when it comes to uh, you know, trying to to keep your guys around. And the Brewers do love Woodruff. Woodruff loves the Brewers. Um, and you know, just kind of having it over the short term makes it a little bit more palatable. Um, and I just think with what Woodruff is is looking for, it’s not anything unreasonable that the Brewers can’t give. How active do you think the Brewers will be in free agents or is this a case where they’re going to be waiting until spring training before they see who falls through the cracks? Yeah, I think this is more the latter uh case when it comes to free agency because let’s be honest, the Brewers aren’t losing much in free agency. I mean, you got you got Reese Hoskins heading out to the open market. You’ve already really got his replacement and Andrew Vaughn. I mean, he he was replaced before the season was even over. Uh so that that’s one hole already taken care of. Uh then outside of that, I mean, you’re losing a couple of of injured guys with with Shelby Miller, Jordan Montgomery, so you weren’t really counting on on them much anyways. Those spots were already kind of filled. And in the case of Montgomery, he never actually pitched for you. Um and then other than that, yeah, it’s Brandon Woodruff leaving. Um Danny Jansen leaving. You got Jefferson Carol already slated to be your backup catcher, so you don’t need to get anything there. And with what you’re fed now, I mean, your rotation, you’ve got eight legitimate candidates uh for rotation spots behind Freddy Peralta. Uh so you’ve got plenty of options internally already for the starting rotation. Uh so you don’t really have much need there in free agency. I mean, really, you’re looking at maybe a couple of bullpen arms. You know, we’ll see who they have as as their priority bullpen arm that they really want to to go and bring in um and how good they might be this year. maybe a veteran utility infielder to provide some depth beyond Andrew Monisterio and Anthony Seagler. Uh but that’s really about it in terms of what you’re looking at for free agent needs. So I don’t anticipate them doing much. I don’t anticipate them being at the top of the market for any of these free agents. Um and I think ultimately they’re going to end up waiting quite a while and they’re going to sign a couple of guys in, you know, mid late January. Uh, and we we’ll see kind we’ll see kind of who’s left on the market at that point. Could use a backup catcher as well with Danny Jansen likely not coming back. He’s already Brewers have already um not optioned taken his option on that contract. So, could be a backup catcher they get or maybe a veteran. You got Caro though. I mean, and they love Caro and and I asked Matt Arnold about him. Um, and they said that they feel really really good about Caro heading into next year on the big league roster. So, I think there’s there’s a very good chance you just see Jefferson Caro as the backup catcher to Contrarus next year. Um, and then perhaps, you know, that can lean into Caro being the starter once uh uh Contrarus ends up hitting free agency or getting traded before he reaches free agency. Uh because uh we’ll we’ll see unless an extension gets signed, which I’m not exactly optimistic for once we lose another one of our stars to the big market. In other words, that’s that’s exactly exactly. Oh, he’s getting closer to free agency. Ship him out. Um, but yeah, uh, looking over the fence real quick, I see the Cubs, uh, you know, they’re maybe interested in Valdez and Ramber Valdez and Dylan CE. I’m like, oo, the Cubs are going to be players in free agency. That doesn’t scare me at all. They can do whatever they want over there. They say it every single year, don’t they? I mean, they got so much money to spend that they’re going to be getting all these top free agents because they’re the Cubs. they got a ton of money and then every year Rickettts cries poor and they don’t end up actually signing the the bigname guys that they think that they’re going to sign. So I’ll I’ll believe it when I see it on some of those bigname guys. Um and yeah, we’ll we’ll kind of see where they end up uh end up going, but it seems quite certain that they’re going to lose Kyle Tucker. So that’s a big bat out of their lineup. You know, no matter who they bring in, I doubt they’re going to be able to adequately replace Kyle Tucker. Yes. Let’s catch up again in December after the baseball winter meetings and see if there’s any shuffling around and all that. Thanks for stopping by. Thank you. Sounds good. I plan on uh being down there in Orlando at the winter meetings. So, uh we’ll see if we can get some live reports and uh see what we got from down there. So, it’ll be fun. That’s that’s good news. Four Milwaukee Brewers rookies received Rookie of the Year votes on Monday night, marking an unprecedented showing of young talent that signals a bright future for the franchise. Caleb Durbin finished third despite initial doubts about his size at third base, while Isaac Collins, Jacob Mizarowski, and Chad Patrick also earned recognition.

Host Chuck Freimund breaks down Durbin’s clutch performances and defensive excellence that far exceeded expectations. The discussion shifts to Freddy Peralta’s future, with national writers speculating on trades while signs point to the ace returning for 2025.
Baseball writer/broadcaster Dave Gasper joins to analyze the NLCS sweep by the Los Angeles Dodgers, exposing baseball’s billion-dollar payroll inequality problem that forces the Brewers to operate differently than big-market teams. The conversation covers Brandon Woodruff’s $21.5 million qualifying offer decision, the team’s conservative free agency approach, and why the Chicago Cubs’ annual offseason hype rarely materializes into actual signings.

Discover why this young Brewers core has the franchise positioned for sustained success despite financial constraints.

  1. I sincerely hope Durbin and Collins aren't one and done guys, had a blast watching them this season. Faded into the post season sadly but so did most of the team 😂. Keep Peralta. Otherwise who's your guy? Miz? Lmao. He still has issues, doesn't strike me as THE guy just yet. I would feel fairly good going in with Peralta, Patrick, and Miz. Obviously we will see what happens in free agency but we do still have Logan Henderson as well

  2. I hope Brewers fans can now appreciate the incredible season their team put together. 97 wins. Knock Cubs out in 5. Let's be honest. Nobody is going to match up with the Dodgers in the playoff format until you match their pitching and clutch gene. Only the Mets can match them money wise. Brewers pitched well. Need 1 or 2 vets more with Workd Series experience on the team in 2026.

  3. Nothing is going to change unless we spend some money and that doesn’t mean just in the offseason. We need back ups throughout the year not just tripple A ball call ups, Mark has got to spend some money if he wants to bring a World Series to Milwaukee. WE HAVE TO SPEND MONEY. Our gritt and grind can compete with the major league. We need the bats going all year not just in July Aug. If Mark can’t spend money on this team he needs to be fired, this team is better than 80’s brewers and we will never be closer as World Series contenders if we can’t capitalize on spending some money. Bergman make a deal, Pete Alonso make a deal, Kyle Schwaber make a deal, prices are high but negotiate it down. We’ve got plenty we can pick up in off season, infield isn’t a worry with pena and made on there way to coming up. We need dh hammers or everyday productive players

  4. What is Gasper talking about? I'd much rather go to a game 7, even if it means losing in a heartbreak. I'd prefer that to what happened to the Brewers, 4 to zip. I mean, Milwaukee lost out on playing 2 home games because of that sweep. I'll take heartbreak over dejection any day.
