What are the big offseason plans for the Mets? | Baseball Night in NY
Let’s start with some thoughts
off my bowl Dome, shall we? Number one, for me, here,
heading into the off, season the Mets need to get their ducks
in a row and prioritize trading for tarek school board,
whatever it takes outside and whole McLean. Number to get out
in front of the starting pitching market and sign Ranger Suarez. He’s a
guy that’s excelled in the postseason. You’re going to
need a little combination, their trademark, hit free agency
and then of course, in free agency. Here’s what I would
do with Pete, all for a while. Do with only
take-it-or-leave-it, six-year Hunter. 80 million dollar deal
with the idea who will be DEA chasing a lot more. Danny as
Force kubal, you like the idea of trading for
scuba land signing Rangers towards you. Think that’s a
reasonable. Ask you love scoob? All you love Tara told you so
much. Yeah, I do. But I told you this last week and I’ll say
it again. I don’t think he’s going to be available. You did
all that. By the way, didn’t even break a sweat on that ball
down. Good job. Good job on that one. So here’s the thing.
Do they need to get Suarez and scuba? Yeah. Do they need to get
two starting pitchers? Yeah, it’s not like we should Is a must like you
have to do? You want to play with the big boys? You want to
play baseball in October? Then you need to go and get to of some sort of
starting pitchers. You don’t even have an ace on your team.
That’s really where I struggle and I’ll take it back to the
postseason, right? This postseason, we saw starting
pitchers, go out to the bullpen and come in. We saw them close
games out, we saw them in high leverage moments. You don’t even
have that with the New York Mets. You have guys who are
aging right now. You don’t have a number one and you have
three rookies on the team. Yes, maybe Nolan McClain can become
that guy. Die for you but I think it’s
time to put your big-boy pants
on right? In your big-boy market
and spend some big boy money or go to your farm system and
better yet. If you’re going to go and splash for Terex, kubal
go splash repulse Keynes, you’re going to clean house for
school ball, he’s going to get his second, Sai Yeung, go get Paul schemes and clean
house for that guy. He’s younger and he could be better. So, you’re on the same page with
me when it comes to two starting pitchers, it’s an
absolute must for the Mets. Now, it’s very easy to get on
board with school ball, right? And skins for that. I mean,
these are all World generational type of pictures but sell I’m glad that you
focused on Ranger Suarez because I’m a sucker for a good
old fashion gamer. The Mets need Gamers with in
their rotation and you saw a ranger Suarez for years with
the Philadelphia Phillies come up big. When the games matter
the most, he has a whole lot of October postseason experience. He’s able to battle with Runners
on base. I even go back to the game, the Phillies lost
game. Four of the Nlds a couple of years ago, against the Mets,
Phillies Bullpen, ducked it up blue, the game righteous war is hell. A
gazillion base runners on base and I think even one run in the
game, the guy flat-out knows how to pitch now. I don’t know
if he’s going to look to take quick deal. He strikes me as the
kind of guy. He’s a free agent. I want to see who’s out
there. I want to get as many offers as possible, but I would love that idea
because you’re getting someone who’s
going to compete their tail off every fifth day and to boot for
the Phillies won the division. Yeah, you’re taking him away
from the Philadelphia Phillies. Is what critiqued, oh, bald Dome is great. I like South
spear a little more cells fear in the spirit of
error. Okay, there you go. More in Vegas, in a little bit here.
I think it’s a reasonable as to get the two starting pitchers.
How about Alonzo Hannah? I also don’t want him to hold up the
entire offseason. He’s a big piece of this, you
think that the Mets can let this linger? How patient did
they have to be? As far as Pete Alonso, I think they’re going to
have to be patient because I think Pete Alonzo is going to
be patient, because I think Peter Lanza was expecting
to get a different Market than what he
had last offseason and maybe he should because he
had a fantastic season. But this is the problem. I feel for
these guys in their 30s who are putting up really good years.
But the question is always, okay. Is that a new
standard for them or is that their last best great year and
guide teams? Don’t want to pay for past production. So I think
the market all around is going to be really patient on Pete Alonso which means repeat
Alonso is going to really. Yeah, on the market all around
which means the Mets are going to have to be patient but I
think Can afford to be because I don’t
know that he’s going to have the market that he’s
necessarily looking for. I did particularly like that. Offer
you made him even if he is just d h and Kyle, schwarber is a
great cop of a guy who he only played
eight games in the field last year. And he was what I think.
He was like, the 18th Most Valuable Player and the eighth,
most productive hitter in baseball last year. So you can have a really valuable even expensive,
exclusive, DH. And I think Peter Lanza could be that guy
for the method. I would love to see them. Make him that offer
and he accepts it right off the bat. I just don’t think you,
okay? But the Mets have to have their Line in the Sand. So why
play the game just get to it? We want you back. Here’s what I
believe you’re worth. Here’s what I think the market is going
to say, I’m not playing the game, take it or leave it. See you later. And I’m moving on
and I feel comfortable. Are you though? If he’s cheated on February,
you’re not offering in that Central 180? No, no. No, I would
draw the line and say take it or leave it. Hey, you
got to have some control here. I’m not letting him or anybody
else. Dictate what I do. As an organisation, they did it last year. It worked at he
came back, I want it back, 6180 to me and saying, we want you
back, we also need you to make a decision now, and if you look at a milk,
every last penny go somewhere else, I’m not
looking to do that with Pete. Alonso 626 for 180 more than
fair, get it done.

We should sign Suarez just to make up for letting Wheeler go all those years ago.
Skenes? 😂
deGrom and Cease please
Lets not make Senga into the next Zach Wheeler by trading him away. Big mistake if they do.
Nope. Can't be patient with Pete. Sign Okamoto or Naylor & Bellinger
That sixth year in Alonso's 180M contract needs to be a team option
I can’t believe I’m saying g this but I agree with Sal
The Mets lost $350 million last year, they need to keep all of their top prospects because a salary cap is coming after 2026 and they will need those prospects. I don't agree that Mclean is not a number one starter.
One top starting pitcher is fine. Look at the bullpen… that's where we need volume
Alonso just said no to DH-ing on a regular basis. Red Sox would make him their first baseman.
Pitching pitching pitching
Pirates are going to trade Skenes this year….so don't get your hopes up. He won't be on the trade market for another 2 years at least. Skubal is a rental and scares me with injuries even if you do manage to sign him. Go after Suarez. Get an Alonso deal done. If you can't get Diaz, bring Helsley back for hopefully cheap.
They can give Alonso more than 6/180. I'd say the highest would be 6/200. In the grand scheme of things is 20 million over 6 years going to break Cohen, no. That's like pocket change for him. But I think 6/200 is the line. Alonso can be the full time 1B for the next 2-3 years… then next 2-3 part time 1B and DH (unless he somehow becomes a gold glove 1B.)
I think they should trade for skubal, paul skenes not mitch keller, Ranger Suarez and sign robert suarez.
I have a prediction for you. Mark this down. Unless the Mets trade him or he gets injured, Jonathan Santucci will make the top 100 prospect list and may wind up being their best pitching prospect once McClean is on the big-league club. He will be the replacement when David Peterson leaves next year.
While I think Sal's take it or leave it stance w/ Pete is really silly, I do feel like the best case scenario for the Mets offseason is trade for Skubal, sign Suarez, re-sign Alonso and re-sign Diaz.
I don’t trade Senga, I sign Tatsuya Imai, Murakami and Cease to see how they can work together for the team.
sal has all these jobs and the guy is among the worst in the business on every level….what a finesse
