HIGHWAY ROBBERY: Did The Saints Pull Off A HEIST By Drafting Tyler Shough?
[Music] Did the New Orleans Saints pull off highway robbery? We’re going to have a conversation about it. Remember back in April when Tyler Shuck was drafted 40th overall in round two of the NFL draft? Well, that pick was heavily criticized. Not just then, it’s also been criticized now. A lot of people saying Saint should have taken Will Johnson. Saint should have taken Shador Sanders. Saint should have took this player. Should have done that. Should have traded back. Shouldn’t have taken Tyler Shuck. And look, I think that it’s still fair to say there’s a lot of criticism still happening around the pick of Tyler Shuck at 40 overall. And look, I’m going to be totally honest. I wasn’t the biggest fan of that pick on draft day. I’m not going to sit here and say I was an exception. I wasn’t happy. I was a little bit frustrated. So much so that I had to go back and look at the reaction and I wanted to share it with you before we talked about this conversation topic. Pick is in. Who do we think the pick is, guys? Pick is in. What is your confidence the Saints nailed this pick? Oh my god. Why did we just do that? Why? Why Kellen Moore? Why at 40? Why at 40? I hope I’m wrong. I hope Tyler Shuck proves me wrong. I hope that I’m proven wrong. The newest member of the New Orleans Saints is Tyler Shuck, quarterback out of Louisville. Look, I said I wanted Tyler Shuck to prove me wrong. I hope he proves me wrong. A lot of us were not thrilled about that selection, but I’m going to be totally transparent with you. My opinion on Tyler Shuck has evolved and it’s changed. And I guess I have to say friendly reminder that opinions can evolve and can change. So I want to ask you this question before we dive into why the Saints pulled off Highway Robbery. Has your opinion on Tyler Shuck changed? Let me know in the comment section. Did you like him? Did you dislike the pick? Are you more impressed with him? Are you more or less confident? I want to hear from the Hudat Nation and share your thoughts. By the way, like I know that I said did the Saints pull off Highway Robbery. This isn’t me saying that a statue for Tyler Shuck is be going to go up in Champion Square. That’s not the the point of this video whatsoever. The point is the Saints picked a player who a lot of people were overlooking. A lot of analysts, a lot of fans, a lot of podcasters all said was a reach. And I think it’s fair to say we’re allowed to get excited about a rookie quarterback playing well. And that’s why I think the Saints pulled off Highway Robbery because they got a player that everyone else was overlooking and they managed to take him take the risk. It is a gamble. Every draft pick is especially a top 50 selection and it seems to be panning out in their favor. It’s been two games that he started but I got to give him a lot of credit. He was great versus Carolina. Like what I saw from Tyler Shuck against the Panthers is a 50th or a top 50 pick. That’s a 40th overall type player making the plays he did. And you can look at the clips on Twitter. You can look at the box score. You can look at everything. But when you actually go back and watch the tape and you rewatch the game, you’ll see that he was dealing almost every single play. He was so impressive on third downs. He was distributing the football to his playmakers. He was showing off all of the reasons why we should have confidence in him and that the age is not a factor in this player’s development. And look, the starts for Tyler Shuck, one was bad, one was awesome. Jackal and Hyde type situation here, but you have to have context when having this conversation. The Los Angeles Rams, they’re a team that’s going to be competing for a Super Bowl. That’s something I truly do believe. You didn’t get a lot of opportunities to have a lot of snaps because they controlled the time of possession. But in week 10 when you took advantage of the time of possession and you controlled the game and you controlled the clock, you saw Tyler Shuck absolutely deal and I think that he looks comfortable in this offense. I think that the age and the experience is on display and I think that you see the maturity he has and that is a big reason why he was so successful against the Panthers. And I know that you’re going to sit here and say, “Trace, it was just the Panthers. It’s they’re terrible.” Wah wah wah wah. Well, they just came off a win on the road against the Packers, won four straight. I mean, like they they they are putting together some nice things. And I know that the Panthers aren’t the best team in the league, but you played against a team that I would consider on the same level or playing ground, maybe even a little bit above, and you outplayed them in their home stadium. You controlled the game. And look, there’s a lot of reasons why we can all yell Shuck yeah. But I want to give you five reasons of why I’ve been impressed with Tyler Shuck and why I believe Highway Robbery is what the Saints pulled off 40th overall. This is not me, by the way, knocking any other quarterback that the Saints have or could have had on the roster or have had on the roster, but Tyler Shuck elevated the offense around him. That’s not something we have seen a quarterback do in a very, very long time. And I’m going to tell you a few more reasons and kind of dive into this more in just a second. First things first, we are so close to hitting our next milestone here on Saints Now by Chat Sports. Just 17 subs away from 52,000 and 100 members of the Golden Gang. Lock us in. Subscribe today for 100% free Saints content by fans for fans. Now, what do I mean that he elevated the offense around him? Well, I think that he was able to navigate and move around the pocket really well. I think he was able to work through the issues that the offensive line were unable to stop in the pass rush and getting pressure on Tyler Shuck. He did have to move around a lot, but he also made his team around him better. He was extremely productive on third downs and that is an area where the Saints have typically stalled out over the last few years. It really feels like for the first time since Jameus Winston was around, which is crazy to say, and maybe even before that, the quarterback elevated the roster. And I think that he showed improved footwork and improved movement in the pocket. You can tell that he’s more comfortable there. His awareness is better. And one play that immediately sticks out in terms of how he navigated and improved in the pocket was that first drive whenever Tyler Shuck was scrambling around. He avoided pressure over here. He pointed out pressure over here. He stepped up in the pocket. He was able to go and toss the field or toss the ball downfield to Jawan Johnson and he was able to show the improvements in the pocket that he has had. He was able to show that he can throw on the run. He was able to display the strength that he currently has. I also think he’s a tough and fearless competitor and and I think that he’s a player that isn’t afraid to take the shots. I think he’s a player that isn’t afraid to get hit. He’s not afraid to stand there, move around, and try to make the pass. I I I really understand that Tyler Shuck has a long way to go, but in the two starts we’ve seen, you’ve seen so much talent in this player. The NFL size 100% there. The arm talent, no question about it. He can hit every blade of grass on the field. The deep ball was beautiful. The throws on the run were really nice. He is a tall, big football player, and that is an advantage for Tyler Shuck. And he throws a really catchable football. This is not a knock to Spencer Rattler or to any other quarterback. This is simply something that I noticed. Tyler Shuck’s passes were not getting dropped nearly as often. And I think that that’s due to the style or the way that he was throwing the football. The different release angles that he has are extremely impressive. And he’s not absolutely throwing it on a rope where the receiver has to have the strongest hands in the whole world to be able to bring it down. Like not saying that that’s what Spencer Rattler was doing every single play, but you can tell Tyler Shuck throws a much more catchable football. And I think that that’s something that the New Orleans Saints have a massive advantage in with this player. And I really do believe that the Saints are starting to find their identity. I think they’re starting to kind of get the ball rolling. And to be totally honest, I wish we didn’t have to wait to see more from this team. Like as crazy as it sounds, like I’m sad that we have the bye-week and we’re a two and eight team and I’m bummed that we have the buy. I wish we could sit here and watch the Saints play on Sunday because they showed me things to be really excited about offensively, defensively, special teams. They played complimentary football. And I don’t think it’s much of a mystery. And I don’t think it’s really ironic that Tyler Shuck comes in and we start playing good football and we start seeing the whole roster come together. Again, I’m not knocking any player that has been a quarterback for this team. I just want to say Tyler Shuck has been severely impressive and truly a really nice project that the Saints are clearly doing the right things with. They let Spencer Rattler start at the beginning of the season. You got through the tough stretch and now you have a much easier back half of the season and Tyler Shuck showed that he can win some football games. Now we’re going to continue the highway robbery conversation, but first things first, I know you got a little furry friend at home. Mine, his name is Dude. Comment your pet’s name down below and get your pet a new Saints jersey. chatsports.com/saints pet. The link is in the comments and description of this video. They’re on sale, so go and get yours today. Now, I again, I understand that highway robbery. You might sit here and say, “Oh my god, they didn’t do that. It’s been one game.” I I I know, fully aware it’s still way too early to tell if this guy is the franchise quarterback. It is still way way too early to say that he is going to save this football team. The jury is still out to be honest. But there is reason for optimism over the next few weeks and for the remainder of the season. You have a very very easy stretch. The New Orleans Saints right now hold the number two overall pick, but you have a incredibly easy lineup ahead of you. The remaining opponents have a combined record of 23 and 42. You play one team that right now on Tuesday, November 11th, as I’m filming this video, one team you play remaining has a winning record. That’s it. There’s two teams that have a 500 or above record and you beat one of them. The New Orleans Saints have a chance to rattle off some wins. And this is a take that I have had. This is a take that a lot of other Saints podcasters have had. And I got to give a lot of credit to Ross Jackson because he kind of planted this seed in my head. But I think he was really really spot-on when he said the Saints could win themselves out of the first or second overall pick. And if Tyler Shuck can prove to be a winner, I think that that’s actually a really good thing. We do not need to be rooting to tank. We do not need to be rooting to win no more games. We do not need need to be rooting to have the first overall pick. Because in my eyes, in a perfect world, Tyler Shuck works out and he’s your guy and you got your quarterback. That’s one less huge need that you don’t have to worry about. And that means you can fill in all the spots around him to maximize that player. And I know that the strategy of build the roster and then put the quarterback is a smart way to do it. But if you have the quarterback and you can build the roster in a smart fashion, then I also believe that that is a good way to go about rebuilding this roster. It’s far from a complete product. But I think with Tyler Shuck proving that he can be a winner and proving that he can lead this team to victory and that he can play at a very high level, I think that that’s something that we should be rooting for. And by the way, the Saints are not going to be trying to lose games. They are actively going to be trying to win. Kell Moore is not going to try to lose games. They want to see what they have in this player. So, they are not going to try to lose. If that’s what you want, I’m here to tell you it’s not happening. But my question is, if Tyler Shuck can prove that he can win, if Tyler Shuck can prove that he can play at a high level, and if the Saints can rattle off some wins down the stretch, of course it would be nice to have the first overall pick and trade out of it and get a ton of draft capital in the future. But why wouldn’t you be pumped if your rookie quarterback proved that he could be a winner? And if your rookie quarterback proves that he has what it takes to at least carry you through the next few years. Again, maybe it’s crazy to call it highway robbery, but I think that there is real optimism around Tyler Shuck in New Orleans. Appreciate you guys for tuning in to today’s video. Hell Nawl ๐๐๐๐๐
Look I had Jaxson Dart as my number 1 QB and Tyler Shough as my number 2 in this draft. You can go back in the comments before the draft and check. I said before and after the draft that Dart and Shough were the top two quarterbacks in this draft
No, and i don't understand why everyone is losing their fucking minds. 1) Tyler Shough DID NOT PLAY THAT GOOD. 2) Spencer has played far better games, and while they were lost, he was in there to the last minute, and those teams were WAY BETTER! I do not know what everyone is seeing that I am not. But, I also wantt to be proven wrong
Shough is a beast. Iโve been in the live saying shough is the best player in the QB room. Shough was the second best QB in the draft
Shough was a steal because he should have been first overall pick or second overall pick. Saints stole him at 40.
Yes if he can win 6 more games that would be an great pick
Not based on one game?
Galaxy
It's been one game. I need to see this consecutively. We ain't get that against the rams.
Louis Riddick was very high on Shough. He said if it wasn't for the injuries Shough would've been the first QB drafted. We mighr look back and say we were lucky we were able to get him.
I love my Saints….but come on it's not only the QB MF need to takle too!!!
Did the Chiefs pull off Highway Robbery in the 2017 draft when they traded up in the first round to draft Patrick Mahomes before the Saints drafted him? According to Drew Brees he was informed that the Saints would be drafting Patrick Mahomes. We'll see how long it takes Tyler Shough to win 3 Superbowls.
Keeping drives going looks to boost the moral of the whole team, albeit only being one win. Hopefully we have our guy for the future. Lets us focus on other areas in the draft.
Come on man donโt jump out the gym. Give him the rest of the season before you crown him the king of the N.O. I want you to be right but please pump the brakes๐๐๐๐
Pretty sure the rams have an mvp candidate under center , sooooo
I'm happy for the W. But, is to soon to elevate Tyler that way. Like I've discussed with Rat's fanboys who tried to discredit his nice job vs Carolina but it has been only one game
If he wins 5 of the remaining 7 Games or if he wins 4 but he defeats the menstruating pirats I will start to believe in the future and I want SO bad that to happen.
He is still under review. He and other young talent need more plays. For example I would use Devin Neal as RB1 to see what he got too and SEE if we need QB and RB as well next year
No Saints game this weekend because of the Bye Week. No worries because the Seahawks play the Rams this weekend. Rashid Shaheed facing the Rams for the second time this year. He should have a good game with Sam Darnold.
Letโs see how the rest of the season plays out!
Itโs hilarious that literally everyone single person was saying I was crazy when I wanted to bench rattler for Tyler now everyone is jumping on the bandwagon well guess what Iโm glad we need a qb that we can all get behind havenโt had that since Brees left
I finally subscribed!!
Anyway regardless of our future but Tyler Shough looked Awesome regardless of the competition from anyone else whom has tried to be our QB, just did enough to open my eyes and said okay!! Something is there and I am excited!
Saints/ We might have something as in enough to draft talent and move forward as a franchise, Yes only 1 game but one game has opened my eyes!!
Had been awhile to imagine of a future!
The total wins over/under for the Saints was 5.5 so unless they win 4 more games the under is looking good ๐
Players picked before and after shough could do what he did vs the Panthers
The Saints will not try to lose games because Kellen Moore is already fighting for his job. His game management and play calling have been very questionable.
I liked the choice from day one. When I saw him play in colege he was impressive and in preseason he was good enough to start the regular season.
We'll see what Shough does against Baker Mayfield in Tampa.
Calm down its only one game and its only the Panthers
Bad pick. Couldโve got him later and still drafted a #1 CB in Will Johnson. Itโs been documented that Moore really wanted Dart and was trying to move up for him, he panicked and reached for Shough. He played really well last Sunday but that was just one game letโs see going forward
You gotta relax bro itโs been 1 game lol
Tyler Shough 6 all better offensive protection with everybody coming together at team on both sides the ball ๐ and special team to win game ๐๐ Go Saints Go from Saints fan ๐๐๐๐๐๐
I quit criticizing QB decisions after I put down the Saints picking up a QB with a bad shoulder in 2005. I learned my lesson
The bye comes perfect because it allows shough time to develop more and allows Kellen more time to adjust playbook
Are you kidding me ? Itโs been 2 games. One he looked terrible in and they got blew out, one he looked good in and the defense helped. Truly, I think youโre overreacting to one game where the offense scored still under 20 points. You may win a few games like that, but not near 3/4 of them. The team the Saints played Sunday wasnโt any of the teams they got blew out by. One thing is for sure I think though, you will know for sure by season end weather he is good or a bust. Iโm leaning toward bust. He has no pocket presence. He canโt scramble like other quarterbacks. He is a stationary quarterback. His runs are ugly, he will get hurt if they try playing him as a running quarterback. He has hieght but he is not built for that.
That's a good point about throwing catchable ball. I noticed that too. He has such a smooth touch when he passes the ball.
