The 49ers Just Made A WEIRD Move… San Francisco 49ers

The Niners made a weird move or nonmove depending on how you want to discuss it. As far as I’m concerned, I think it might have been a mistake and I’m going to be talking about it in this video. Hit subscribe if you’re looking for 49ers content like this. We’re also going to be talking about the conundrum of this defense. Is it good or bad? It’s kind of hard to tell at times. We’ll be breaking that down as well. To start though, I’m kind of curious as we talked about the secondary struggles yesterday and we kind of went into a little bit of that narrative around how the Rams decided to attack the 49ers defense through the air to kick off the game and spending twice as many of their first 21 plays in uh passing concepts versus running the ball. And why did they choose to attack the 49ers defense that way? Uh why were they able to do it so effectively? And part of it has to do with the fact that the coverage of this the coverage grades of this team have been really bad just in general overall across the board. A lot of bad coverage grades uh coming going around. Now, I’m curious what you guys think the 49ers need to do to solve that problem because they had an opportunity. They had an opportunity to bring in Asante Samuel. I mean, we assume that they had the opportunity. I’ll go into why it looks like the 49ers passed on Asante Samuel in a second, but basically they brought Asante Samuel in on Monday, yesterday, and uh they had the opportunity theoretically at least to give this guy an offer uh for him to come and be a 49er. And Asant Samuel has gone to the uh Pittsburgh Steelers per Jeremy Fowler. Free agent quarterback Assant Samuel Jr. is signing with the Steelers practice squad, a top 25 free agent in March. Samuel recovered from spinal fusion surgery in time to sign this season’s second half. Now, he gets a new start with Pittsburgh. Of the many teams that he did go and see, though, the Niners were one of them. And the reason that I suspect the 49ers were not interested enough to put an offer out there for Asante Samuel, and I could be wrong, is based on Matt Mayoko’s take, and I trust his take on this uh way more than I would trust most. He’s up there in like the top three voices in uh in terms of 49ers media, in terms of inside scoops and all that stuff. Here’s what Matt Myoko says at the bottom, and we’ll get to Kyle Shanahan’s stuff at the top in a second. So Matt Moyoko, thanks Coach A for the tweet. So clearly it didn’t sound like any indication that the 49ers were looking to sign Asante Samuel. Oftentimes on Mondays and Tuesdays team will bring in play teams will bring in players for workouts just to kind of see where they are at to keep their notes up to date in case there’s an injury later and they need someone for the practice squad. That is the take from Matt Mayoko on how the 49ers are thinking about Asante Samuel. Kyle Shanahan spoken about asked about Asante Samuel yesterday said I hadn’t at the time he had not gotten a chance to talk to anyone about it but he’s sure just to check him out see where he’s at. We know he’s been a heck of a player so probably just to see where he’s at right now. Matt Mayoko interpreted that and said essentially the 49ers are not really super interested in signing Asante Samuel right now. So he goes to the Pittsburgh Steelers and you know I think this is a missed opportunity. I’m not saying that Asante Samuel would be a world beater right now. And I’m not saying he’d walk in and just completely change this team, but it feels to me like it’s an upgrade because you’re upgrading him over um over a depth player and you’re probably saying Renardo Green is going to take a little bit of a back seat. Now, I’m not again like I’m not hating on Ronaldo Green, but he has not played perfectly. he’s had a lot of ups and downs and I feel like bringing in another veteran presence and have another guy that’s kind of mixing it up with your team. Um, you know, maybe maybe we don’t know the details yet. So maybe the deal uh that he was offered from Pittsburgh was way beyond what the 49ers were even going to be willing to offer him. Um, so of course there’s there’s that’s why I called this a weird move and not a downright wrong move because I don’t know all of the information. How could I possibly say the 49ers made a massive mistake? It does feel like a missed opportunity for a defense that is struggling mightily this season. One area they’re struggling horribly is in the turnover department. The turnover differential for the 49ers is way more a story about how bad the Niners defense has been at generating turnovers uh than it had than it is the Niners offense generating a ton of turnovers. the offense has been fine for the most part and not horrible in the turnover department. However, defensively, we are not turning we’re not getting uh we’re not getting enough takeaways. And so, you look at the Niners here who are second in the league in the turnover differential. And the only team that’s worse than them is the New York Jets who have not had a single interception on the season. So, that’s that’s the metric I’m look I’m working with here. You’re next to the Jets on defensive statistics right now. I don’t want to be next to the Jets right now on defensive statistics, right? So, uh, you know, I would love to see the 49ers defense, you know, bring in another player. We saw that the Niners were not interested in bringing in anybody else um at the end of the trade window. So, you’re dealing with what you have there. The only thing left to do is in the free agent market. and uh there was a guy who was out there who at one point was considered a very very high prospect not that long ago. So, you know, it would have been nice for the 49ers to be interested there. They were not. Now, again, don’t know the details of it, but it feels a bit like a missed opportunity, but perhaps this game against the Rams was more of an anomaly. Quick pause in the video for a message from this video sponsor, which I am stinking proud to tell you is Chomps. A while back, my wife bought me some Chomps. I’d never had it before and absolutely loved them. I got hooked on them immediately. Zero grams of sugar, 10 grams of protein, 100 calories, grass-fed beef. There they come in a variety of flavors. The the turkeyy’s really good, too. I I met someone yesterday who absolutely swears by the jalapeno. So, there’s something out there for everybody. Go give it a try. They’re perfect onthe-go snacks for me. It’s my favorite thing to bring to work. Sometimes I just eat them with my lunch. Sometimes I have them as a snack. And I absolutely love them. And as I’ve told you before, it’s crazy to me because I did not like beef steaks growing up and these things made me believers. If you click the link in my description and use my promo code, my friends over at Chompser are happy to knock off 15% off your entire order. You can throw them in your gym bag, you can throw them in your car, you can throw them in your backpack, uh, like I do, or you can just leave them in your desk at work. They’re fantastic. I strongly encourage you to give them a try. Maybe it’s not indicative of the entirety of the defensive performances of this season. For example, when you look at the Rams this this the 49ers against the Rams this one game and you see the numbers and the defense EPA is so bad minus 30.9. You know how bad it really is? It’s really bad. This is the worst defensive EPA performance, EPA per game performance, uh, in the Kyle Shanahan era. That’s how bad it was. So, is it possible that this defense actually isn’t that bad and that this is just a huge anomaly in the large data set that is the 49ers under Kyle Shanahan? Is that possible? I suppose it is at least possible. The Niners defense has not been great, but has it been horrible? It’s a It’s a fair question. What we saw against the Rams was horrible, but the Rams are also a very good team. So, if personnel change is not the answer, says the 49ers, who did not take an opportunity to bring in Asant Samuel or trade uh big future picks for a bigname defensive lineman like a Trey Hendrickson or whatever. since they chose not to make a personnel change. Perhaps the problem lies somewhere else. So, I started digging. Oh, well, before I started digging though, Brian Baldinger, he talked about the Dvonte Adams touchdown and he pointed not to a Malik Mustafa issue, not to a a issue in personnel, but a different issue. Look at what Brian Baldinger said uh this morning on 957 the game on the roast morning roast. This is what he said. The Devonte Adams touchdown bothered me because they have Mustafa out there guarding Devonte in the slot and you got Diam Lenor guarding grass on the other side of the field. You can’t do that. This is a Hall of Fame receiver who leads the NFL in touchdown catches. I don’t know why the safety is matched up on him. At least give yourself a chance. So Brian Baldinger didn’t say, “Get rid of Mustafa. He’s trash.” He said, “Don’t line up your safety against one of the best receivers in the NFL.” In other words, make better decisions as a coordinator, better decisions in how you scheme against a particularly difficult opponent. I thought that was interesting. And that’s where I think this whole idea of how much of this is a personnel problem. We need we need better bodies on the team and how much of this is a scheme issue. Not saying that Robert Saw is not good. What Robert Saw has done this season with what he’s been given is great. I will say that till the cows come home. He has done a great job with what he’s been given. But to break this down a little further, let’s look at defensive stats as a whole. defending the sixth most pass attempts. We’re talking about secondary year, so I’m really focusing on pass attempts here. Okay, defending the sixth most pass attempts this season are the 49ers. They’re getting thrown at a lot. And despite that, they’re middle of the pack in yards per attempt allowed in the passing game. They’re top six in yards per reception allowed. Top six being at the bottom end of that scale. So, they’re doing very, very well in yards per attempt, yards per reception. They’re middle of the pack in explosives allowed through the air alone. If you just look at passing statistics, they’re they’re middle of the pack despite being at the top of the top of the NFL in terms of the number of passes they’re having to defend against, which I think is a very interesting statistic. Right? If you want to think about it on a linear path, for example, you’d say if they’re getting the sixth most pass attempts and their defense is average, they should be at the sixth worst on all of these statistics, right? Then of course, that’s not how the math actually ever works out, but that would be the linear, you know, logical conclusion. Okay. The flip side of that, however, because we can’t just talk about the positives, we got to give to the negatives, too. They’re top 10 in most yards allowed through the air. They’re top 10 in touchdowns allowed through the air. They’re top 10 in completion percentage allowed through the air. And they’re top 10 well obviously through the air. And they’re top 10 in first down receptions. So you tell me guys, I I’ve given you some data. I’ve given you some news. You let me know what you think the 49ers need to do to prepare for the Arizona Cardinals where they’re going to have an opportunity as a defense to regroup and show the NFL they can be better than what they were on Sunday. Is this the 49ers or is this the 49ers had a bad game against a very good team? My gut is to say this is not the 49ers. This is the 49ers had a bad game against a very good team. A a depleted 49ers roster. Had a bad game against a really good team. But I’m interested to see what you guys think in the comments. I appreciate you guys to the moon and back for watching these videos, commenting, liking. It makes it so much more fun for me uh to to be a fan and to have people to interact with and uh talk to and share and comment back and forth and all that good stuff. You guys are awesome. Appreciate you. I hope you guys have a fantastic rest of your Tuesday night.

  1. Philly got Phillips from Miami for a 3rd!!! Why didn’t Kyle pull the trigger on that trade?’ I think he’s jealous of the Defensive Coordinator Saleh and all the attention he’s getting!!! Why else would he not make a trade or sign Samuel?

  2. It doesn't matter if we signed Asante or not, friend. Without a pass rush, you are leaving all of your CBs on an island. Remember, Asante is good, but not a shutdown corner like Asante SR. If we don't fix that weak pass rush, all we are doing is taking a roster spot for the same results. I think the 49ers are conceding this season because they are not that optimistic about the guys on the field. In short: we are more than a CB away from helping this team; Asante would get torched the same way when a QB has 3 days to make a pass.

We just going to have to coach what we got

  3. With how many injuries the Niners Defense have suffered a blow out was due, especially against a hot Rams team looking for revenge that smelled blood in the water.

  4. There must be more here than meets the eye. 29 starters on and off IR, PUP, recent bad experience with overpaid veterans.
Jennings not being in the game enough to catch, false start or not think about ball security with Three drive ending fundamental errors this game still could have been different if those drives didn’t depend on 3rd and Jennings.
The defense still needs the leadership on the field with Warner and Bosa. But even with the defensive lines poor pass rush results it wasn’t much better with Bosa this year.
