Stephen A. & Chris Canty TAKE ISSUE with Brian Daboll firing 🗣️ ‘IT’S ON THE GM TOO!’ | First Take
Big news out of New York on Monday. The Giants fired head coach Brian Dable after a 2 and8 start in his fourth season at the helm. Offensive coordinator Mike Kofka will be the interim head coach. And Giants blew a late 10-point lead against the Bears Sunday, giving them their fourth straight loss. But was it the right time to let Brian Dable go? Dan Orlowski has some thoughts. I’m of the belief this is a mistake by the New York Giants. Um it it was clear that the quarterback and head coach had something going together. At least this production performance and hope to I the fourth quarter leads are obviously something that you’re sitting there and you know killing yourself over. This team lost its best player and then they lost probably their second or third best certainly offensive weapon in Scataboo. The fact that they had built these leads should warrant something. And the reality is this defense that’s got a gajillion dollars or early draft picks had 10-point fourth quarter leads four different times this year. And they couldn’t find ways to secure the lead either. And so as much as we want to sit there and say Dable didn’t get it done, a lot of the high prized defensive talent didn’t get it done as well. I think that Brian Dable and Jackson start Jackson Dart should have stayed together for at least another year. All right. Well, the head coach and the GM are usually intertwined. And Chris, I want to start with you. Was it right to let Brian Dable go and keep Joe Shane? Well, before I even get to that, I just got to acknowledge what Dan Olowski says. He come up with more excuses than a brother going to jail for these. Wait a minute. I mean, Deno, it’s not as if Brian Deo didn’t have a shot to get this thing figured out in New York. He had plenty of runway. He started off 7 and2 and then proceeded to go 1338 and one. how long is ownership supposed to give him, right? And I give Dave Bowl credit. He identified Jackson Dart, the talent, the quarterback that got everybody here to be excited about in good reason. But I think we’ve got plenty of examples across the NFL this season on firing the head coach and the rookie year of the quarterback and not not ruining the quarterback in year two. Look at the Chicago Bears with Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams. Look at the New England Patriots with Drake May and Mike Vrael. if you get the right head coach, it’s only up from here for the quarterback. And that’s what the Giants now have an opportunity to do with this coaching hire that they’re about to make because this is going to be one of the most attractive jobs in the cycle. But now getting to the question about Joe Shane. I don’t understand what he’s done to justify keeping his job. That’s there you go. I don’t know what he’s done because Joe Shane will forever and always be the face of the New York Giants allowing Saquon Barkley to go down the turnpike right to the Philadelphia Eagles, rush for 2005 yards, 15 touchdowns, and be the catalyst for a Super Bowl run, winning the Lombardi in Super Bowl 59. Amen. That is inexcusable. As somebody that got blood in the ground over there at Metife Stadium, that’s invested in that franchise. That is egregious. You can’t let that happen. And then to add on top of that, you got Daniel Jones, a quarterback that you took with a top 10 pick once upon a time. A quarterback who this regime paid Yeah. go to the Indianapolis Colts and lead them to the best record in the NFL. Yeah. These are homegrown players. Yeah. You let out the bill. And here’s the thing, Jeff. Everybody makes the argument, “Oh, those guys wouldn’t have been that if they’ have been with the New York Giants.” My question to that is why? Yeah. What is it about our culture that keeps them from thriving here, but they can go other places in the NFL and be successful? Yeah. That’s not only on the head coach, that’s on the GM, too. Y Joe Shane should have been gone. Y I feel like Chris Kenny is taking us to church. Go ahead. He has taken us to church. He’s absolutely right. Um, you know, my my issue wasn’t with Brian Dable being gone. My issue was him being the only one that’s gone. Joe Shane should definitely be gone. And oh by the way he shamed George he damn still still shouldn’t still be around to pick the next head coach right he did I mean that is egregious in and of itself he should not he does he’s done nothing to deserve that and then we have to take into account a break this is why I feel bad for Brian David because I think he proved when he first arrived that he knows what he’s doing as a coach okay but these are the things that I thought he did wrong first of all a bit temperamental on the sidelines okay I think we got to point to that right the fetus attitude a lot of times you saw it and you know what was really really agreious just how all in he was on Jackson Darden. And let me explain, that was clearly his savior, right? That was clearly his lifeline and you knew it. Nothing else mattered. You’re running into the tent not wanting him to go into concussion protocol where the NFL has to investigate. That’s a very, very bad look. Right. You put him out there, he’s a rookie quarterback with four concussion. Yeah. Four times in concussion protocol, man. And you’re calling five designed running plays for him. a guy that was in there three times before he got his fourth concussion. What are you thinking? You’re throwing him to the wolves. And then you piggy back off of what you said because of Daniel Jones, how Daniel Jones is looking. So, you got somebody else in the Indianapolis Colts who have clearly developed a a player in one year, which you failed to do with him all the years you had him. Okay. So, that’s a bad look. And last but not least, this is the third consecutive year that the Giants in their first 10 games were two and eight. So the season’s over with eight weeks to go in a season for three consecutive years. Three consecutive years. The season’s over before Thanksgiving. That’s right. The season’s over before November. Yeah. That is not good. As much as I love Brian Dable, I could not defend Yeah. I could not, you know, poo poo the Giants decision. Definitely he deserved to go. But Joe Shane should not be there. I mean, he should not be there at all. He needs to be out. I think this should be, you know, they came in together. They should leave together. Some of the decisions they made and to your point, I can’t stand the argument they wouldn’t have been the same here. Like don’t don’t give me that, right? Give me a chance to see what they’re going to be here as opposed to another team. I I I will I will say this as well when I think of like I would have liked to see Dball finish the season, but I think um knowing that they were both going to get let go at the end of the year, I but I think Kfka is one they really want to see what he can do. That’s kind of the that’s kind of the word is that, you know, hey, can he because he’s been a finalist for a couple of jobs. Seattle, I know he was a finalist. Um, and so, you know, this is a guy that that would be on the radar no matter what. So, I think they’re going to try to do it this way. The the problem for me is when you’re allowing the same general manager now to pick the next coach is what are the power dynamics going to be in the building? Because if you want the the Mike McDonald’s or the Vrabels or the Dan Quins or the you because I heard Dan O talk about the relationship between the head coach and the quarterback. Well, that’s not really the head coach of that’s the offensive coordinator and the quarterback, right? Kind that’s that mentality. I’m not saying he’s calling the plays, but that’s the mentality of it. You don’t have to be an offensive coordinator or an offensive mind coach to have a great relationship with your quarterback. No doubt. and and you’re seeing a lot of defensive-minded coaches, Todd BS, like you can go find a really good OC to go help Jackson Dart. You need somebody to come in that building and raise the floor of who the Giants are. You need to have a guy who comes in and goes, “Hey, this is what our culture is going to look like and we’re going to be this team. We’re going to be this style. We’re going to have this direction.” That’s what that head coach and if your power dynamic goes general manager, head coach, that’s going to be an issue. It’s going to have to be equal and when and the way that they’re do the Giants are starting this I have an issue with. Let me I think it’s important before we move on. Let me read the quote from Mr. John Merritt, co-owner for the New York Giants. We feel like Joe as in Joe Shane has a you know I call him Joe Shane. I say shame like shame on him for I don’t call him Shane. I call him shame. Shame on him for what he did with Saquon Barkley. How he acted. He just showed his true colors with that whole soft knock. That’s what I call soft knocks. The hard knocks is people that win. soft knocks his teams that lose. That’s what I call soft knocks, right? And even just embarrassed himself. But he says, John Mar says, “We feel like Joe has assembled a good young nucleus of talent and we look forward to its development. Unfortunately, the results over the past three years have not been what any of us want. We take full responsibilities for those results and look forward to the kind of success our fans expect. First of all, they’re lying because if it’s full responsibility, Shane Shane would have been gone as well, right? That’s number one. Number two, six first round picks, including four in the top seven over the last four years. Okay, this is going to be their fir this is going to be their fifth full-time coach that they’re looking for since getting rid of Tom Coughlin in 2015. You know, all of this their fifth full-time coach inside of 10 years. Okay, this is the New York Giants that we’re talking about who went from arguably or in the conversation is the gold standard. They have disintegrated into what this is right now. And but here’s the hard part. Jackson Dart, these are your pick. These are some of your picks. Jackson Dark, Cam Scataboo, Malik Neighbors, and Abdul Carter. It’s kind of hard to argue with those picks. You know what I mean? It’s not like he didn’t want but but but but it’s easy to argue against Tay Banks and Evan Neil who was a top 10 pick. Can’t beat you on the field. Right. Right. Right. Like I mean so there are some bad misses in addition to what he’s done in free agency as well. Right. No. So I I I I think there’s an interesting conversation there because this Giants job, it should be an attractive job. It’s the number one job, but I’m cur but I’m curious when you factor in the two timelines, the head coach and the general manager will be on different I know we got to go. I know we got to go. How is that the number one job? That’s what I’m thinking. It’s just like I think about the turnover, the coaches like they’re not neighbors scattoo dart. You have a good Andrew Thomas is a really good left tackle. You got a great defensive line. Abdul Carter you just named like you look at the piece like the parts of a team the nucleus you build around. They have those those players in in there and you have you have the the the I mean like think about how bad they’ve been. You walk in and just do decent. This is this is a full turnaround man and you will have fans going I guess what I’m saying. If you’re saying it’s decent, why do why do we That’s the thing. Like what’s Yeah, what’s the problem? You have all the pieces that are there that you can work around. You talk about all those guys. Abdul Carter, he’s a knockout from the draft. I mean, he’s going to be a beast because if you’re drafting that high, you shouldn’t screw it up, right? Like you shouldn’t like it shouldn’t be, but like Dable was in was the the dart pick. I don’t I don’t think I don’t even think Joe wanted him. I think he wanted So, it’s like all those convers when you give all the credit. There’s a lot of coaches and conversations that go in the draft that the GM gets credit for that really is like, well, I would have rather had this guy, but I’ll take this guy if this is what the staff wants. So you don’t know who did what that that’s and I think they should always be a 10. I I just I believe in that. I think bring a guy in, let’s go together. Yeah. The Giants just not doing well over the last three seasons. 11 and 33. That’s seven. Four double digit blown leads. Four double digit blown including Denver 33 points in the fourth quarter. That’s when I thought he did too. I think every that he would have had a commercial flight home. He wouldn’t get on team playing now 33 points in the fourth quarter. I me it me. He ain’t getting on the plane. Not after losing 33 points in the fourth quarter. Your ass is flying commercial. Let’s ride him and Russell Wilson go somewhere. Let’s ride it commercial. It’s going to be the last seat. It going to be economy, too. Ain’t going to be no business class, no class. It’s going to be in the back of the way. I’ve lived some of them losses. So, I feel you, B. I feel you, Don. It ain’t It ain’t easy. I got you. I got you. [Music]

How do you keep your Job when the GM has picked to 10 pick and missed guy’s like Evan Neal Banks
And others !
He’s never had a great season. He got rid of Jones and Barkley.
"Great defense" Jeff? They blew 4 double digit leads.
Isn’t he really laid off. Still getting paid.
Wink martindale wanted Deonte banks not Joe schoen
Wink martindale wanted Deonte banks not Joe schoen
Stephen A is 100% right
Between the Giants and the Browns they have some of the WORST talent development and it seems to be tied very closely to the GM….you would think that’s obvious but I guess not 😂
Amina Smith is better than Shae and Molly
Seems pretty clear to me they are just not as good since Cams injury. Dart can’t be as impactful n this defense is starting to crack tbh
1:21 😂 that man crazy!
Jeff S. really just said "Mike McDonald's" rn😂
HIRE FLORES
I’m surprised none of these sports analysts mention Shane Bowen! 😂
More excuses than a brother going to jail 😂😂😂. Completely agree 👍 he found new reasons every game on how to lose a game every 4th quarter
Evan neal was a can't miss prospect! Ya acting like ya were not praising that draft class i remember everyone was so excited! Also, yeah pay saquon top money for a team that was not a playoff team and only played good for 1 year he stinks this year. Avg under 4 yards a carry only 4 tds ranks 15th in yards. Daniel Jones basically is proving it wasnt him it was coaching and unfortunate injuries.
Brother, "potential" doesn't get you "Super Bowls" "results" DO!
Why even be an NFL coach anymore? Pay isn’t even that high compared to players. Every owner has stupid expectations. Go coach college. More money and you have more control. Am I wrong?
Amina the best host so far & she is gorgeous 🤩
Dart didn't have 4 concussions
Dan O is right
