[Podhorzer] I can’t comprehend how Jasson Domínguez’s power was non-existent this season, despite an elite 49.6% HardHit% and maxEV over 110 MPH

  1. He’s got elite bat speed and hard hit. When he makes contact, it’s a rocket.

    Terrible LA Sweet-Spot % and squared-up %. Bad barrel % too.

It’s right there in his savant page. He hits hard but his targeting the baseball and launch angle is not good. Something to work on in winter ball.

  2. Its where he was hitting it. His Exit Velo was good, Launch angle was optimal but baseball savant shows he was making a ton of bad contact leading to a lot of flares and Burners. Also he hit way to much to the opposite field for a switch hitter. Oppo when hes batting lefty in Yankee stadium is death valley. CF in a lot of parks is a hard place to Homer.

One of the other things is that hes struggling because his swing is too damn long fir his size and different from what he was doing that first time he was called up. Baseball doesn’t have data for 2 yrs ago, but in 2025 Jassons swing length is in the 7th percentile, and you can see in videos of him when he was younger, how much quicker and more direct his bat path is. If you look at his stance the bat is damn near parallel to the ground, which means he has to do a lot more to get his bat in position, this means a longer swing, more likely to be late on balls which means worse contact and more oppo flair and or burners.

And before peoplestart trashing the Yankees, This isn’t necessarily a yankee coaching issue. Players make changes based on comfort and results. Jasson has 80th percentile bat speed, its well above average so the longer swing probably served him well against worse breaking balls like he saw in the minors but sharper and faster offspeed needs shorter swings. Im not a coach but I think if he alters his bat angle a bit more upright in his set up it’ll fix a lot of the length and timing issues.

  3. The power was there, the problem is, Jasson doesn’t have a high launch angle, he doesn’t pull balls in the air, which seems like a big problem. A lot of his batted balls often end up on the ground as well. He also gets beat on a lot of fastballs, even average ones. Next season will tell us a lot more about him and what adjustments he’ll make, if any. I’ll love to see a .280-300+ hitter with 25 home run power. Dominguez did well enough for rookie, but he absolutely didn’t live up to the hype.

  4. B/c he hits the ball on the ground. He needs to make some mechanical adjustments. He drifts forward and his swing gets long so he’s not staying behind the ball and it’s causing him to not pull flyballs. A lot of opposite field drives

  5. One of my biggest issues with him, or concerns was/is his size. Sure, we can find examples, but generally speaking the most successful hitters (especially power) are much larger/taller than he is. He is just shorter than most.
