I remember when people used to hate on the Mikal Bridges trade

  1. This is the player I know him as and why I think many were disappointed with him last year. So glad he’s found himself.

  2. Given how the Nets drafted this year…I’m sure the 5 picks we gave them will end up being not worth anything close to what Mikal has given us

  3. The amount of people hyperinflating the value of those picks was insane. You’d think we gave up top 5 picks for the next decade

  4. The difference is crazy. Last year Bridges either spotting up or posting up, and he seemed allergic to rebounding.

Dude had 4 offensive rebounds alone last night and a super dynamic role both on and off ball. It’s crazy how much Thibs held this offense back.

  5. Crazy what happens when you actually uses your players to their strengths instead of putting them in a box to fit some antiquated coaching philosophy from 20 years ago.

  6. He’s been balling. But let’s not pretend he didn’t look very good quite a bit last year.

The whole “fuck them picks” narrative will be solidified if NY wins a title or at least gets to the finals. Otherwise the trade can be looked back on as a failure – we still don’t know what the picks will end up being in 29/31. If the knicks never win a title but those picks never amount to anything of substance, cool. If 10 years from now the Nets have a generational star they picked with one of those picks – along with the knicks never even getting to the finals… you could certainly no longer say “F them picks”.

it’s opportunity cost so we’ll never really know what would/could have happened if they didn’t trade for him. It can be a fun discussion (would they already have Giannis, for example).

But as of now I am happy to have Bridges and hope for the best possible outcome for both him and the team.

  7. I was guilty of complaining about him a lot last year, specifically his 3pt shot. To be fair, he is not only playing much better this year, but his shot looks much improved.

  8. The Boston series cemented his legend status. Him literally ripping the ball away should forever be part of Knicks lore.

  9. I loved the trade watching him with the nets. Then he wasn’t super good but this is exactly what I was picturing when it happened

  10. After that playoff performance, you say fuck them picks. He is playing great ball RN and this is the guy we signed up for!

  11. i wanted to go full nova knicks. if you told me there was a way to complete the nova quartet i would have signed off on it by any means. was only a couple months before we traded divo but i was hyped.

  12. I never had an issue trading away that many picks, my biggest gripe was that’s the kind of haul usually sent when it’s for Bonafide stars in this league (except Luka of course). What we were getting from him last year wasn’t great and obviously thibs had a huge role in that. That being said, while he’ll never be at KAT or JBs level, he’s a perfect fit for this team – fuck them picks

  13. This is like the perfect combo of Suns and BK Mikal. 17-5-5 on 50 and 50. If he could put up 17-5-5 on 50 and 40 oh man. OG at 40 too. It’s REALLY Ring szn. :0

  14. I get why fans didn’t want to give up all those unprotected picks for a guy that’s never been an All-Star. I kind of thought that the Knicks should have held the line at giving up that 20231 pick unprotected. Maybe just putting a top 3-4 protection on it. The 2031 pick is the only pick that’s of any concern if you look at it.

Breaking it down. The Knicks already gave out 2 of the 5 picks in the trade both of which were in the 20’s or late teens. The next pick they give up is 2027 which should also be firmly in the 20’s. 2028 swap and 2029 pick while they aren’t sure fire not likely to amount to much I think that even as this team will be a veteran team by then they should very likely be a playoff team. In 2027/28 Brunson will be in his age 31 season, KAT 32, OG 30, Hart 33, Bridges 31, and if they keep Mitch he will be 30 and if they keep Deuce he will be 27. That’s not a young core but it isn’t old. The year after in 2029 the team will still mostly be in their early 30’s and even if some guys lose half a step they will be good enough to make a playoff run. 2031 you probably have most of these guys firmly in their mid 30’s and year who knows by then.

But this organization knows what it is doing and risk of losing a top pick in 2031 is worth not only having Bridges a very good durable player in his 20’s in with the team now but also the apron implications that the team has pushed off for several years due to Bridges being on a cheap deal these past 2 seasons and Brunson taking an early max. Hopefully the Knicks hit on a draft pick either in round 1 in 2026 or 2028 when they have a pick or in round 2 and they can get a starting caliber or sixth man type to help out the current core as they get older adding 2 or so bench guys in round 2 in the next few years or developing Huck/Pacome/Kolek into one would also help.

Overall I’m not too concerned about those picks…
