There is so much pessimism on the Pirates. A team with the best pitching prospect in maybe 20 years and the best hit tool in the system coming up late 2026 or 2027. Two legit 5+ WAR players. If Hank Davis is 2 WAR next year I’m buying 2028 WS tickets!

My problem with their argument is that the kind of organization that has two 5+ WAR players is normally the kind that surrounds them with a bunch of other decent players. So I feel like this is a case of correlation not necessarily equaling causation.
Two 5+ WAR players won’t do a whole lot if the rest of the Pirates’ offense is godawful. Konnor Griffin can’t do a whole lot of good if the rest of lineup can’t protect him. And I’ve seen nothing from Cherington to indicate he’s ever going to assemble any number of offensive players to support Griffin in the lineup. And all of that is with the big assumption that Griffin lives up to the hype.
If nutting actually spends money on even average bats we can probably compete. Our pitching staff has a lot of potential, especially the starters. Bullpen has some good arms but inconsistent. If we could have scored more than 3 runs a game consistently we would have been competitive last season. So if we can improve the bats, even modestly we could be okay
