Liam Coen on Travis Hunter, Injury Updates and Mindset for Week 11 | Jacksonville Jaguars
Uh we shared yesterday on Travis’s successful surgery um that and that he’s out for the season. Um you know, yes, on the field for obvious reasons, uh he’ll be missed. You know, he’ll be missed, but also off the field, you know, he’s got that presence, that confidence, um that, you know, is infectious, right? Fortunately, we won’t lose that. Um our our team, our locker room, uh will rally and continue to do so and and Travis will be right here in Jacksonville rehabbing with us. for the remainder. He’s already back in town. Um, and he’ll be able to get with these guys uh in the meetings and learning, studying, and really diving into that uh as he goes through this process. Um, I understand there’s a lot of questions about if he’ll, you know, remain a two-way player and all those kind of things, guys. You know, all of that is very premature. And um at the end of the day, like every player on this roster, he’ll be evaluated at the end of the season. Um and we’ll be able to give him his three better, three best, and the things that we need to continue to improve upon and the things we need to build on, but right now, our complete focus is on the Chargers and getting a much needed win on Sunday. Hey Liam, on Travis, you saw seven games of him, the experiment. How much of a benefit will that be going into the offseason saying, “Hey, this is what we think worked. This is what we got to change.” Yeah. And then also looking at okay where are we where do we need them most right in in more ways than others. So I definitely think the the whole pro the whole thing’s been a learning ex you know experiment and um but getting to know the person is obviously been the the most important thing. Um and the type of competitor um the way that he learns the way that he competes the way he practices. That’s stuff that we’ve uh been able to gain valuable information on and and be able to use moving forward and actually put into continued practice. You still expect him to be your number one receiver and your number one quarterback at some point down the road? You know, it’s it’s all that’s very premature to answer at this point. You know, you have a lot of confidence in the the makeup, the person, the competitor, uh the athlete, the talent. Like I said to him, so many players have gone through uh minor setbacks for major comebacks and um that’s been the complete message to him. Season’s over. Yeah, I think it’s it’s always that initial, you know, shock is is I’m sure um a challenge and then um you know, he’s very fortunate to have a a strong support group around him and uh got a lot of guys, a lot of people that care about him. So, um I I feel very confident that he will um come through on the other side of this thing. What are you not getting or not getting enough of now from Trevor? Is there anything you know there that you feel like he’s not giving me enough of this? No, I think you know Trevor and I had a good conversation yesterday in in terms of just um you know, hey man, cut it loose and let it rip, you know, when we do have some of those opportunities. And um hey man, we yes we don’t want to turn the ball over, right? We want to turn it over on defense and we want to keep it on offense, but we can’t, you know, be thinking about that or trying to play um to to not make a mistake at all. Right. And so the message for for Trev and our conversation is to to just go cut it loose, let it rip, and um see what happens. Right? You don’t need to be Jordan, you know, point guards, facilitators, distributors. Um, you know, that’s what we we need and and that’s what uh we talked about yesterday. So, essentially just screw it. I mean, you know, screw the play, but just more like, yeah, man. Hey, it’s it’s not all going to be perfect and or how it’s designed to to maybe always hit against, right? there’s um you know looks that you want to try to attack, but it’s more hey man let’s just attack this defense and and if there’s windows that pop and present man let’s feel the confidence to cut these things loose and play freely and um continue to use your legs as a weapon. Um, you know, at the end of the day, uh, he did put us in a position to potentially kick a game-winning field goal at the end of that thing when the ball got down to the 42 yardd line, uh, and we had the penalty. And so I I know Travis Hunter said to me after Vegas, he said in the training room, “When we get in two-minute mode,” and he was obviously watching, right? He goes, “When we get in two-minute mode, I believe we’re going to go do something with it.” He’s like, “I believe that.” And so, uh, there is belief that we can go down and get ourselves into a position to go score and we did, but obviously had the penalty there. You know, looking at the Chargers on third down, they’re excellent on both sides of the ball third down wise. What What stands out when you watch LA in terms of why they’re so successful on those downs? Yeah, you look, first of all, on offense, um, you know, Keenan Allen’s the most targeted receiver in the National Football League on third down. he can still uh wiggle and win and separate. Strong hands, smart football player, understands how to use leverage and and get open in zones, right? And then obviously so does Lad in a lot of ways where they both have a great feel for zone and man and winning verse man and having a feel versus zone. They’ve done a nice job of mixing ball out uh plays with also uh the ability to run the ball on some third downs to be successful whether it’s with the backs or the quarterback. Um whether it’s designed or extending plays, we know when we do get our opportunities at uh Justin, we have to take advantage of them and get him to the ground. He’s a big dude that can um you know make some plays off schedule. So, and then defensively, I think they’re extremely sticks aware from their second to third level of their defense. The rush has obviously done a nice job um getting some pressure and being able to affect the quarterback, but they’re, you know, I think Jesse Mter does a great job. I got a lot of respect for him and uh the zone coverages, they’re very aware and they do a nice job of pattern matching. How rare an athlete is Justin Herbert at that position? Very talented man. I Yeah, he’s he can make every throw and and it seems to be with ease. Um you know, it’s uh he’s big, strong, athletic. Um you know, I think they’re playing to his strengths and they’ve continued to try to put good skill and players around him um to allow him to take advantage of his skill sets and um yeah, I’ve got a lot of respect for him. You mentioned penalties. Um, just how much has that sort of killed any momentum, especially when it’s the early downs? You know, you get a false start, second down or a hold or on first down, you know, how much has that changed how you guys play? Yeah, it’s it’s it’s not fun, right? It’s not a a fun place to live as a player, as as a coach, you know. So, um, you know, the continued message is that we are we’re in this thing together and that, you know, there’s there’s things that are controllable and there’s things that aren’t. and are we able to control the controllables? We’ve had this we’ve talked about this and so um talking and and putting it into practice in critical moments or in uh tighter games and in the fourth quarter, the first quarter, whatever it is. Um you know, that’s where it has to come out. That’s where it ultimately uh means the most. You said a couple times over the course of the year that this team hasn’t played four quarters of their best football. Yeah. I mean, at this point in the season, is that frustrating? How do you fix that? I mean, I think there’s you would watch the Monday night game. I’m not sure that was four quarters of those two teams best football either, you know. So, that’s just the reality. It’s football, man. You ain’t going to play uh perfect. We’ve played near in a lot of ways. I mean, even not playing, I guess you could say, our best football through those three quarters. The other day, you were winning through three, you won three quarters of the game. You lost a quarter and you lost the game. So, how do you execute in critical moments? How do we go and um take a deep breath in critical moments to reset and not chase plays and go just execute the call, man. Let’s just go execute and play. So, that’s what we’re focused on. We’re focused on fundamentals, going back to basics. Anytime you go through a tough L, all I’ve been taught is to to dive back into the details and the fundamentals and the players. Were you more interested in the mindset of your team this week than any other week? Say it again. Are you more interested this week in the mindset of your team coming out of Houston than any other week? Um, yeah. I mean, I think the post LA, you know, by sting was probably a pretty good one to to get judged on in in a lot of ways in terms of the way that we uh responded throughout the week because it wasn’t just like this all great gravy positive practices. The whole, you know, it was a grind. We were competing. was working through things and the way that we played uh showed it at the end and we yes there was a guy open but we strained we did write longer and won and came out on the positive side of it. Uh yeah I we do need to respond. It is it is part of us. And um you know we talked a lot about today that the soul of sport is uh team. The soul of sport. Why do we want our kids to play sport? Because of the lessons that it does and provides you as people, as teammates, as men. And that connection is what’s going to get us over the hump in those moments. And in a tough time like uh coming off a loss like Sunday, you remember where you were? Were you watching the Jags playoff win come back over the Chargers back in whatever the hell that was? I do. Yeah, I I remember watching it. I don’t recall where I was. Um I I do recall watching it though and and seeing um that whole thing happen, right? And so you’re you know you’re you’ve been on the right side of it before, right? and to be on the we haven’t been guys right in too many games this year aside from Carolina leading by that much right and you know my message to the team was parting part of learning and growing together as a team as an organization is we’ve got to learn from this we have to learn from this if we don’t learn from this well uh what good is it at the end of the day and we don’t in life, we learn from hard times, right? Like you you actually have to look and say, “Okay, what do I need to confront?” to make sure that that doesn’t happen again. And that’s kind of what we’ve been talking about is um you know, you you learn and you grow through hard times. What’s your expectation for Britain Strange this week and what will he do when he finally gets back out there dayto day and just see what it looks like every day? You know, we obviously have missed B sprinting the the the blocking, the the run game contribution, the pass game contribution, the toughness and mentality. It’s more going to be just seeing how he looks out there, what he’s comfortable doing, how much can we put on his plate, and um what that’s going to feel like, especially after getting out on the grass and utilizing it and doing things and seeing what that response is day after day throughout this work week. what you need to see finally. Yeah, Wyatt is uh obviously getting him back into it coming off the the, you know, injuries there is um trying to get him to feel like he’s coming off the rock like he was more so in training camp and having the confidence to be able to move um you know powerfully at the line of scrimmage and at the second level adjustments and being able to move and feel confident in those movements. um you know he’s practicing his tail off the I never question at all the competitor the guy that wants to be really good and is doing everything that he’s being asked of and um just need to see him take that next step of man it’s all the movements are looking painfree Trevor’s hesitency to let it rip did that show up on tape or in conversation or both no just a couple plays you know what I mean like he made some really good throws too in that game, you know, and also made some critical plays with his legs. There was just a few plays that ultimately, you know, you want back and what, okay, what’s causing this to not be executed is really just what it comes down to. And um, you know, you always want your players to, man, like, who cares? If it’s incomplete, it’s incomplete, you know? I mean, who cares, dude? Just cut it loose, let it rip. And um, that’s why you play, you know, that’s why you play. So, um, that’s more what you what the conversation was. Five more times in three of the last four games. How much of a concern was that for you and how much is that limiting the offense from getting in a rhythm? Yeah, I think it it definitely um puts you off schedule for sure. I mean, we knew going into that game that there was going to be some um pressure, right? Like that we weren’t going to have a a ton more than a a hitch or two, right, in the game. And then uh we had to look at um the route depth. Are okay, are we getting are we holding on the ball too long or man are we not executing this block to the best of our ability, right? Like how can we as a group execute uh protection better, right? And um you know against a a good unit like that’s a challenge. That’s a challenge that we have also stepped up to in the past as well. And so, um, you know, they got after us a little bit up front in some ways. They also, we held on to it, maybe got a little deep a few times. Like that stuff happened, but, um, you know, I do expect us to respond this week. And, uh, we also have to continue to have a good plan for these guys to make sure that we’re helping them out and putting them in a position to be successful. Ash rush has been a last big talking point as of late. How do you evaluate why it’s struggling and how you can get it going? Who’s that? The pass rush in general. Oh, big. Yeah. Um, look, I think we are definitely we’re seeing a lot of drop back pass, I think, more than anybody else on first and second down, right? Um, you know, there’s some of that stuff is quick game, some of it’s drop back, but it’s like that combination of when the ball’s coming out like under 3 seconds is like that 25 27 range. It’s not quite quick game. It’s not quite drop back and the ball is able to spit. It’s a combination of um okay, we got to be a little bit stick more sticks and and conscious at, you know, the second and third level of of our coverages in zone and be a little bit more um stickier and just patient instead of getting out of there. And then also um you know those guys up front, you know, these are opportunities. If we’re getting that much drop back, guys, we got to go take advantage of it. And when we do have them in our hands, we got to get them down. And um that’s just that’s football, right? That’s pass rush. It’s not that complicated. You know, we got to cover in the in the front. They usually go hand in hand. And when both groups are doing their job to the best of their ability and that’s all they’re focusing on, usually good things happen.

I still trust you coach, DTWD
We are 5-4. Maybe it doesn’t feel like it but I’m proud of this team after all of the cards they’ve been dealt this season. Let’s take down the chargers Sunday it’s a great opportunity to get back on track
Let trev throw 5 ints in a game 😂 great strategy smh don't forget about a couple fumbles there coach. Trade for dak prescott or Kyler Murray anybody honestly
Justin Herbert is wayyyy better than Trevor Lawrence no chance to win unless our defense plays top notch combined with the run game
Ladd about to tear us up this weekend
Been riding with jaguars it’s like a religion I refuse to to go against the home team
That’s exactly how Trevor’s been playing scared of the turnover if he goes out there and let it rip I think we’ll see a different quarterback
Trevor sucks man. Year 5 and every single press conference is the same. Extremely low iq qb play. It’s like he fritzes out, panics, and just makes about 4 or 5 boneheaded rookie mistakes every single freaking game. How the hell did this guy get top qb money? He is like 18-23 at best
Tlaw may go and get out of his shell this weekend
Ye and I want my team to win 6 game and 1 lose coming because we have to beat) 16 team a row I be praying to god that we will get our first ring in the Super Bowl taking it home at the stadium because I been with these team for ever I even play madden with jaguars on franchise because the Super Bowl feels like real life so I wish 6)game win with 2 colts play and the jet’s Arizona cardinals and broncos so please win this game the last game is the Tennessee Titans I be grateful I love you Liam coen Trevor Lawrence Travis hunter Travis ETN Parker, Washington when I see two guys over Washington when he caught that ball touchdown. I was like whoa this team is getting good so yes six wins one loss coming up is we’re a five and four let’s make it 10 and five. I love you Jacksonville Jaguars.😢😢😢😢
I think if the Jaguars beat the Chargers, Liam Coen will be the coach that brings a Lombardi to Jacksonville
We might I have to get tom Brady if Trevor Lawrence don’t win this week then we will go on call Tom Brady up and ask him if he wants to play the Jacksonville Jaguars to make it to the Super Bowl
😢😢😢 heartbreaking 💔
Coachhhhhhhhhhhh !
0 first downs in the 4th quarter. 3 min time of possession in the 4th quarter. Could not get 1 1st down. 5year franchise QBs cannot let that happen. You bring your team up. Your team doesn’t set the tone for you. Unless….. you’re not the leader and the franchise qb.
My bet is he will be a great one side of the ball player. Pick that side and go get it.
LAC is going to light us up
How many people you see get worse at their job 5 years in. TL
it takes 11 players to do their part ease up on Trevor
Maybe this game will be like the last time we saw the Chargers in the playoffs, was beating us bad until we came back
These penalties should be as the jaguars organization, the constant slap on the wrist ain't cutting it!!! Put a fine on them they are getting a lot of money, Put that fine money in a food bank to help feed struggling families in Jacksonville, just a suggestion.
Real fast minor set back would be like a hamstring strain or something. This is a major set back in my opinion lol
Love you Coach, you’re the guy
Its going to take a year or two to get the talent in the building we need for this team to be a contender. Balke and missing on top draft round picks has set us back. They had to flip half the roster and we are playing with a lot of guys who were backups or would be backups elsewhere.
Guys I feel like we are forgetting that this is a team with a first year headcoach, 1st year DC & OC and First year GM. The reason we are so down about this team is because of how well we started, this just shows we will be so great.
Love the message to Trevor to “just let it rip”. I feel he’s gun shy because he’s too worried about turning the ball over
Coach. We gotta make some changes. Defensive play calling is an issue. I like the philosophy and what he’s getting out of guys. But what we show offenses on the field needs to be improved. Qb needs to show improvement. I do like him loosening the reigns
As a chargers and colts fan since day 1 liam Cohen the man I would want him as a coach he a players coach good leader and a qb whisperer
