His season numbers are almost identical
Just a note to everyone that says “pay the man whatever it takes”… He’s the first to do this since DeGrom, right? DeGrom in 2018-2019 was crazy good. Among the best of all time. And he was also older than Skubal. 2020 was shortened, and he was just as good. But if you look at 2021-2025 DeGrom has averaged 13 starts per year. This year was the only year he didn’t miss time. He’s still good right now at 37, if not as dominant as when he was 30. The issue for anyone that locked him up through age 40 after his Cy Young campaigns is that pitchers, even the best pitchers, are probably going to spend a big chunk of a 10 year contract on the IL. DeGrom has been like Trout, and for a pitcher that’s kind of typical. Maybe Skubal will remain a 6 WAR pitcher when healthy but if he’s signed for 10 years he’s probably only going to average 3 WAR a year.
