BLACKHAWKS POSTGAME: TOUGH Home Loss for Chicago, Bedard Not Enough vs Devils | CHGO Blackhawks

The Hawks lose 4-3 in overtime to the New Jersey Devils, but there’s a lot of good to take away and we’re going to do it next on the CHGO Blackhawks postgame show. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Welcome in to the CHDO Blackhawks. Postgame show presented by Bet365. Download the bet365 app. Use our code cho365. When you sign up, whatever the moment, it’s never ordinary at bet 365. I’m Jay Zawoski. That’s Greg Boyison. Sarah Victor’s over there. Mario Tbasi’s at the United Center. He will join us after Jeff Flashel and the Blackhawks speak after their 43 overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils. Uh Simon Nemitz gets the hattick. Uh the Hawks get goals from Connor Bard. Landon Slagert and Sam Laferty, pair of assists from Felino and Crevier in this game. Uh, look, you played this game without Frank Nazar, without Andre Burkovski, and without Jason Dickinson, and you gave one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference, the best team in the Eastern Conf everything they can handle. Yes, they are the points leaders in the Eastern Conference, and you gave them every damn thing they can handle. And look, was this game tilted heavily into favor of the New Jersey Devils? Yes, it was. But if I talked to you at 8:51 p.m. tonight and said the Hawks are going to get a point out of this game, all things considered, everybody would have taken that and run with it. Absolutely. I mean, sure, it sucks you couldn’t Yeah. get the extra point. It sucks you you had two onegoal leads in the third period and couldn’t hold on to it. But overall, this is one of those games where you could look at the the Blackhawks who they skated tonight and be like, “Yeah, that you can be proud of the way this team battled tonight and and you know, they they were with them all game long. Even they were got out played at five on five most of the night. Um they you know, this team just they’ve got something going for them. They do. It’s, you know, it’s an attitude. It’s mojo. Whatever you want to call it, it’s working for them. They don’t give up on anything. They don’t give up any night. Um, you know, any Spencer night and it it, you know, it it it’s good to feel frustrated at a loss like this because it it’s a game that you should win. There’s expectations now within this fan base and that’s awesome. This team has played great. Uh, they got their 20th point tonight. Yeah. They didn’t get their 20th point last season till December 9th. You’re talking almost a month sooner. Like, so yeah, these w these wins the or these losses now, they’re going to sting a little more to the fan base. And that’s a good thing because that means you had expectations for them to win or there’s now raised expectations for this team total. Hey, can this team be playoff team? Want to know American Thanksgiving is right around the corner. We know that stat if they’re still in a playoff spot come American Thanksgiving. It’s not just a good start anymore. This is a good team. So, you know, first night back after a long road trip, you’re playing a real tough opponent. As you mentioned, you’re short-handed. You were down two of your top three centers. You were down one of your top line wingers, and you still found a way to to take the top team in the Eastern Conference to overtime. Should have beat him, maybe. Could have beat him. Definitely. Yeah. Um, so I mean, credit goes all the way around that this team is just, you know, this is a game that they would have lost five to one last season. Yes. This season they get a point 100%. They get a point and they and we’re mad that they only got one. That’s a good thing. Yeah. And look, like you said it, it’s disappointing. And it is disappointing, but there’s a difference between damn and anger, right? And rage about it because this is a disappoint. Maybe you threw your remote in frustration or you kick the dog or, you know, I don’t know. I know Sarah, a stuff dog, a pretend dog, not a real dog. Um but you frustration but it’s you know man they were right there with such a good team and it would have been great to get that second point. That is the understandable feeling and you said it man like it is so great to be in a position again where losses hurt where you where you walk out of the United Center you turn off your TV late at night and you’re like man it feels like a point got away even though maybe we didn’t deserve it. this is what we want. When we previewed the season, we said, “Please give us meaningful hockey and we’ve got it.” It’s frustrating. You know, it’s it’s disappointing because you you’re you’re starting to think like, man, is that point going to come back and haunt us at the end of the season, right? Or is that extra that one point we got because they forced it to overtime going to be the difference between playing in the first round of the playoffs or staying at home or, you know, listen, I I know every time in Throughout the first months of the season, people have asked me, “Hey, you know, could this be a playoff team?” And I’ve been like, “I don’t know.” But listen, they keep doing this. They’re in every game. Why not? Well, yeah. I mean, so yeah, especially with everyone they’re missing, right? I mean, maybe that point comes back and haunts them. And if it does, hey, it’s been a hell of a year, right? I mean, if if we’re sitting here in in early April looking back in games in October and November going, well, if they just picked up an extra point here or just picked up, then you know what? That’s a hell of a successful season. Yes, it is. Uh I’m just I didn’t know what to expect tonight and I was expecting the Hawks I when I say run out of the building just to kind of be hanging on for dear life but ultimately lose like 3-1, 4-1, something like that. and you walk away saying, “All right, well, tough injured. Excuse excuse.” Not an excuse, but excuse. But man, like they came out from the puck drop and they were physical. What’ you say? Colton Doc had nine hits. Nine hits. Um, Felo had a big hit. Donado had a big hit. Was physical. Ma had a big hit. Like they went out in this game. And if you watch last night’s game between Anaheim and Colorado, which is turning into a heavyweight matchup because Anaheim looks really good leading to West uh or the uh Pacific. They started the game, Anaheim did against Colorado a little bit tentative and it got him scored on right away. And I’m curious if Jeff Flashel was like, see this, don’t start like that. Don’t start scared. Go out there and assert yourself. And they did like the I think the first part of this game was the Hawks best part of this game is they were taking it to the Devils finishing every check against everybody and they get the five on three and they’re peppering Jacob Marstrom with shots and they’re patient and they’re set up and they look poised and ready and even the Bard goal which extends his point streak to nine games like he waited an extra tick and waited for the defenseman going to sell out and for Markstrom to fall down and did not make a mistake like this team is playing with a maturity probably a little bit earlier than we expected cuz even when you look at guys like Kaiser and uh to a lesser extent a little bit Ardum Lefchov but I think he’s been getting better every game there is the heart attack moment every game happened today too but that dude almost won the game in overtime immediately it was him Bard and Moore and he gets the puck He’s like, “F it. I’m just going to go.” And gets a good scoring chance. He hits a post clean in this game, too. Five on three. Yeah. Yeah. So, you’re you’re see I I think that this the arrival of this team is happening a little sooner than we expected. And like I think we’ve seen, you know, guys like Korchinsky in their first year, okay, they’re hanging in there, but you’re not really seeing the flashes of what you’d hope to see. with these young guys. You’re seeing it. You’re seeing these flashes from these young players. Even Oliver Moore, there were two opportunities in this game where he was dead to rights one-on-one with Mark and he passed. Yeah. Which hopefully Conor Bernard pulls him inside and said, “Don’t be like me. Shoot the puck. Don’t defer to the veterans. You got a good shot. Take it. Use it. Don’t dish a pass to Louisier. Put it on net.” Yeah. I like there were definitely some uh teachable moments there for for more tonight th those plays and then there was the shift in overtime where Jack Hughes was was got tangled up with Spencer Knight. So they had numbers going the other way and they kind of just were like we’ll let 86 get back in the play like that that you got to push. Yeah. And Jen Broll pointed that out too like why are they Yeah. you got to push there and you know they you know those are learning moments when you have young players when you have young players like Oliver Moore in just his what third NHL game of the season or fifth whatever it is I don’t remember when he got called up whatever he’s played very few NHL games is the point when it’s guys like that that make those mistakes you could be like okay just don’t do it again the next time you’re in that situation tonight was fifth if if it’s Tavo Terravinan doing that then you’re like what are we doing here? Like it’s not it’s it’s the guys that you know you can be like all right young kid making make a mistake. Um you know I I think you know I I like that he started the overtime with those three young guys. It was rewarding more and and Levoff and and why the hell not Oliver Moore at three threeon three with his speed you know he can make something happen. And you didn’t you don’t have Frank Nazar, right? Uh you don’t have Andre Burikovski. So why the hell not? It was weird that he had two defenseman out there the next shift, but it almost worked. Matt Grizz went to the front of the net and almost scored a goal. Yes. And and it’s, you know, it’s what um what Bashel said. I forget if it was with us or if it was uh on his uh I forget when this was, but he was talking about five on five is a privilege. Six on five is a privilege. Five on six is a privilege. Overtime is a privilege. So, he’s rewarding guys who have played well with opportunities. Yeah, that’s the sort of stuff that rallies a team that gets guys believing, that gets guys bought in where like Yeah, you might I saw somebody question like, “Boy, why were Grizzlick and Blastic and they almost scored. Almost worked. It almost worked, right?” Like, and those guys have played really, really well. Matt Grizzlick has been outstanding. So why not give him a shot in overtime when you’re down Nazar and Burkowski and Yeah. You know what I mean? Like absolutely, you know, he’s going to make the smart play. He’s going to make the safe play. So fine. I think you you get Bard out there as much as you can and they were doing that. You know, he would take a breather and then they’d get him right back out there. Cool. It’s just I have zero problems with the overall approach this game. There were moments I mentioned more. I didn’t like the first Neix goal, the backhander at the end of the first. Yeah, that there. Yeah, second period. But Spencer Knight has made a 100 million saves he shouldn’t make this year. So, I’m not going to I think he surprised him more than anything. Uh, you know, it was coming on a on an angle and maybe Knight didn’t realize he had, you know, the puck on his backhand like that. And it’s a defenseman, so maybe you kind of Well, yeah. I mean, he was pretty well defended, too. Dard was right on him trying forcing him to the outside and he just he he surprised him with that shot. Not a goal you needed uh that you definitely want to give up. But you know, listen, Spencer Knight, he’s got a free he’s got like store credit on free passes for soft goals for a while. Some of the amazing saves he’s made. Um, you know, this was a night where, you know, the New Jersey Devils, especially their top six, can go toe-to-toe with the Blackhawks speed, which is something the Blackhawks haven’t dealt a lot with this season. Yeah, they’ve been the faster team on almost every night. So, tonight they had a team that was just as fast, if not faster. And the talent gap, big big time talent gap here tonight. So, like tonight to me wasn’t necessarily about like, hey, they just they didn’t they didn’t perform. They didn’t they had no effort. It’s not like that to me at all. It’s just you you’re still a young learning team and you’re playing against a legit Stanley Cup contender and there it was the talent gap that won the game. Yeah. Uh Ricochet says in the chat that like they need to work on overtime. You got to keep in mind, we’re a month into the season here. You’ve got a brand new coach, basically a brand new coaching staff, aside from Andrew Sorenson, implementing an entirely new system. He’s not spending a ton of practice time implementing threeon-ree. Yeah. I mean, threeon three is pretty simple. It’s like you have a guy, you have a guy, you have a guy. Just keep your eye on your guy, right? You know, it’s pretty much man-on-man, right, in that situation. And you know, and again, they had they had two really good scoring chess since overtime. Yeah. So, yeah, like and that’s what you hope for. I mean, when you when you when you’re facing Jack Hughes and Nicoir and and Teimo Meyer and Luke Hughes and Simone Neich in threeon-ree OT, right? And and the Devils have been really good at OT. This is their fourth straight overtime game. And Jacob Merkstrom makes a a a threezone pass on the tape. Yeah. like it’s a great play that they were right to change then but he made a perfect pass and Donado just couldn’t get there and it was a great shot that beat Spencer Nike glove hand they are fast as hell the Devils are good as hell they’re very strong that top six is really fast and really good and amazing puck handling and passing in the offensive zone both of those third period goals were product of Jack Hughes’s wizardry with the puck, being able to get guys out of position because they just keep passing it around and all of a sudden there’s a guy wide open at the side of the net. Both of those goals were were because of that. And you know, some of that was, you know, taking advantage of some some younger players out skating and getting out of position, but that’s what great elite players who can pass the puck like that do. Yeah. I mean, they even get veterans out of position. And Conor Murphy got caught on the one goal where he went behind the net and then that’s all the space. Uh it was the Mercer goal. That was all the space he needed and Mercer really that was a well coached play because Mercer kind of snuck towards the point and then saw Murphy go behind and then kind of found that open area there and just got it past the skate on on ice awareness and just great execution and taking advantage of when the other team makes a mistake. That’s what great teams do. Yep. All right, we are late for the break zone. We’ve got our nominees for game pucks. So, get your votes in. Here are the three. Everyone thought what it it would be before the game. Sam Laughaferty with his first goal and first point of the season. What a goal that was. If you missed the game and are wondering like what Sam Laughy, go find a Sam Laferty goal cuz I was like as it was happening I said Sam Laughy tower what are you doing? What? It’s posted on our YouTube. There you go. His goal list. There you go. Perfect. As of right now. Um, go check it out. But it was just insane. I mean, Jay and I were literally just laughing our asses off at that goal because it was like, wow. Didn’t expect that. I mean, and he and he tow dragged the hell out of Luke Hughes. It wasn’t, you know, some replacement level defenseman he did that to. That was a, you know, and he almost uh, Michael Ferik, Cory Schneidered, uh, Jacob Marstrom there. Yeah, I thought he was hurt after that. I think he was just embarrassed or pooped himself. He was readjusting his jock strap. The other two nominees aside from Laferdy, Felino and Krevier, each with a pair of assists. So get your votes in. We’ll reveal the winner at the end of the show. When we come back, Nick Felino and Sam Laughy spoke. We’re going to hear from those guys. We’ll be joined by Mario Tbasi shortly. We got a lot of people watching, not a lot of people liking. Uh, we all ran into her at the game and she got a puck from Connor Bard. Why isn’t she here? Late night. I think she’s going to come Saturday or Tuesday to the studio. Yeah. Okay, good. I was going to say she definitely deserves uh by the way, Tuesday, military appreciation day. My godfather, my uncle Frank, is being honored as one of the veterans. Two-time Purple Heart recipient uh in Vietnam. And uh he will be honored during the anthem and during the game on Tuesday. So, if you’re there, Yes. He gets a double anthem. Frank Zawaskki is is related to Jay Zawasi. Double anthem, too. Double anthem. Twice the time on the ice. Yes. Exactly. So, uh, lots of good stuff happening, but yeah, it was very cool to meet Holly. Uh, and she, you could tell how excited she was to be here. And she was, uh, on Cloud9. Yes. You could tell she just had a lot of nervous energy, but it was very nice to meet her. She goes, I had I went to Target. I had Chipotle and I had Starbucks. I’m like, there you go. She’s been to America. Is this her first time ever in America? Oh my god. Yeah. So, looking forward to uh I’m actually taking her and her friend to Rockford on Sunday. uh for the Icehogs game. So, Oh, that’s gonna be so good. He’s gonna be dead. Quiet down back there. Exactly. Like, I’ll pull this damn car. I don’t care if you don’t like my music. You want to listen to your music? Drive your own car. You never heard a grand funk. There will be no Taylor Swift in the car at all. And Pizza Man says, “Jay gets his grandma at the Cubs game and his uncle at the Hawks game.” Uh, nothing to do with Grandma and Cookie at the Cubs game, but I I did uh I pulled a string or two to get Uncle Uncle Frank on the ice uh Tuesday. It’s also a good uh Uncle Frank. It’s one of my favorite Drive by Trucker songs. It is. And Dirty Frank. Yeah, good pearl jam song. All right, let’s hear from uh the captain. He of the two assists tonight. Uh Mario grabbed this postgame audio. We’ve not heard it yet, so hopefully it’s clean. Here is Nick Felino postame. Yeah, I think I think they obviously have some dangerous players over there, but you know, let’s just call it wasn’t our best game tonight, right? We just didn’t have our agame and uh I thought we competed hard and, you know, find a way to get a point and uh that’s important coming off a road trip where sometimes these are little trap games they call them, but no excuse obviously. we we we need to find a better game. We just didn’t didn’t have the energy or the but it was weird cuz we did compete but just seemed like the energy to make the the simple plays or or just the sharpness that we normally play with that uh just seemed missing a little bit. So um you know it’s it’s a tough one cuz you you you want to win and pisses you off when you don’t especially having a lead like we had a few times and um but uh you know to grind out a point and you know we got to get we got to come ready with a ton of energy for Saturday’s game. You mentioned the goal and uh I mean Sam has been very patient and has to you know deal with the going in and out of the lineup and uh just what a statement from him with that goal tonight. Yeah, I mean it was a huge goal at the time too, right? I think the biggest thing I’ve taken away from from Laugh is just he’s a great teammate, great pro and uh it’s not an easy situation that he’s obviously in, but he’s handled it with, you know, such class and uh it’s a reason why all the guys cheer for him and want him on this team. So, um, you know, that’s that was awesome to see and it was a huge goal, a big moment for our team, and you just wish it kind of stuck and and was the game winner, but, uh, you know, he makes plays like that, it’ll be hard to take him out. So, it’s, uh, it’s awesome to see. And, um, you know, we we got to find a way to to bring more plays like that from every guy. With Burosky and Mazar and Dickinson out, and obviously you guys aren’t going to be healthy all year, but, how important is it to get the depth scoring and that this team’s going to, you know, compete to to beat teams or to get points games out like this? Yeah, I mean obviously our line especially knows the role that we’re in, right? We need to be a heavy line and make sure we’re responsible in our end and then you know if you you pitch in with some goals, it’s a bonus, right? And uh but we have to be heavy and playing in there. I think you know when we do that there’s no reason why we can’t get our opportunities to score either. we’re all, you know, guys that can put the puck in the net and and can be around it and um so that’s part of, you know, depth scoring and uh and being that team or maybe your your big boys are are are checked really well that night or just don’t have their their agame and uh so it was it was nice to kind of contribute that way, but be nicer in the win. And I think that’s just something as we grow and get better and more used to these winning situations, we’ll uh we’ll get better. What does it say about this team compared to the last couple years that you’re down three guys, you don’t have your agame or maybe the best energy and you’re still in overtime competing with a team that came in with the best record in Eastern Conference? Yeah. No, I I think that’s the hard part for me cuz I told you I don’t really love moral victories and uh I’m not but it’s hard not to say that. Yeah, we’ve grown, right? Like this is a game that probably years previous that I’d been here, we would have lost by three or four cuz it would have just crumbled on us. So, um, I’m encouraged by that, but I still don’t want to be okay with with not winning this game, right? And so, that’s the that’s the message in here is like good job battling and and even though we didn’t have our best and maybe missing some guys, but every team misses players and and every team doesn’t have their best, but the good teams find ways to win. And that’s the message and just this maybe the the bad taste in everyone’s mouth is even though we didn’t have our our best, we should still find a way to win. And we got to get to that to being that team and uh that’ll be pretty exciting when we do. Is there a reason why the second period I don’t know. You know what? Yeah, it’s something we actually talked about. I just like in as a group here just, you know, it’s unacceptable. I don’t know if we just take a breath because we’re, you know, and and don’t realize they’re going to push and um and maybe they make some adjustments that we’re late to to recognize as players, but the coaches prepare us. And that’s on us though as as players to be ready for that second period cuz we know it’s a little bit of a low for us right now. It’s unacceptable. And you know, maybe we get that sorted out sorted out and you know, our third periods have been outstanding and uh you know, we take over games right away. So, um, it’s an area we’re going to definitely talk about and have to be a little more conscious of as players. That is, uh, Nick Felino, Blackhawks captain. Uh, two points tonight for him. Uh, I like what he’s saying there. You know, it’s, uh, he he is acknowledging that it’s a good performance against a good team, but move past moral victories, right? Like they want actual victories, and that’s how I want my captain feeling. Hawks fans, me, I’m satisfied, I think. right to get a point for the Devils this short-handed a-ok okay with me but I don’t want the players feeling that way I want them pissed I want them mad I want them feeling like damn we let that slip away and so far they’ve had that attitude this season you know when they’ve played a bad game they’ve bounced back and said okay we’re not going to do that again we saw that in the Vancouver game uh that was a very winnable game and they were upset after that game and then well they won it so um still mad about that freaking interference. No, I’m talking about the one in Vancouver. Oh, in Vancouver. Yeah. Um, you know, and then, you know, the the Edmonton game, they were upset about those games and so they went out and won the final three games on the road trip. Um, so, you know, they’ve they’ve had that attitude. They’re not satisfied with, you know, loser points because they’re loser points. You get them because you lost. Yeah. Yeah. 100%. Um, do us a favor, get your votes in for the uh game puck. It’s uh turning into a laugher, so to speak. Speaking of him, want to hear from him? Want to hear from Sam Laferty? We might never get a chance to again. So, here he is. Postgame Sam Laferty. Um started with a great wall play by Piggy. Um so that allowed me to just blow out of the zone and um from there it kind of instincts took over and luckily enough it went in. How has this season been for you? I mean, just in terms of trying to be patient or, you know, just dealing with being in and out of the lineup and taking advantage of the opportunities when you do get them. Yeah, for sure. Um, it’s definitely challenging. It’s something I’ve been through a little bit in my career, so I can draw on that experience. But, um, at the end of the day, like the team’s having success, so you just want to support that any way possible. And, um, we didn’t have our best stuff tonight, but I like the way we’re trending and we just got to keep building. Um, the game plan’s there. I think we just need a little more consistency throughout and um yeah, just think we’re doing good. On that goal, is it a key just like it seemed like you outweighed the the game and just knew that you had elevated the the puck the game? Uh yeah, I think um just cut to the middle and then yeah, just kind of opened up from there. But um yeah, the play never happens if he doesn’t make an excellent play on the wall. um won the battle and then, you know, made a hard play to get, you know, deep out of the zone and um pretty easy for me just to skate onto it from there. With your play tonight, the last few games, are you hoping that can show the coaches that need to be in the lineup more? Uh yeah, I hope so. I think um you know, we can ideally be a good identity line. We can uh wear teams down in the offensive zone. um you know just the way Piggy plays, Slaggy, you know, Docker, whoever it is, um on that fourth line and um yeah, again, I don’t think we had our best stuff tonight, but I think we can wear teams down in the Ozone and just bring momentum every time we go over the boards. That’s that’s the goal. So, that’s uh what we’re working towards. All right, there’s uh Sam Laughy and uh I think sometimes we laugh at his expense, but props to him for being a a real trooper in a tough situation for him. Good for him. I mean, we were, as I said, we were cracking up on that goal just because it was so unexpected, but you also feel good for him. You know, tough season for for Laferdy for sure, but great for him making that play. I mean, a play like that’s going to keep him in the lineup for at least one more game. Yep. 100%. All right, we got to hit the break zone one more time, please. We got to 150 likes last break zone. Let’s get to 200 by the end of this one. It really helps move hockey up the YouTube algorithm when you like hockey videos. These are things I learned working at CHDO from people like Sarah. Good stuff. Hit it. Thank you everybody, by the way, for getting us to 200 likes. We’re actually at 202. Way to go, guys. All right, Mario, you are here. You are with us. We heard from Sam Laferty. We heard from Nick Felino. Uh seemed like disappointment. Uh not satisfied with moral victories. And Greg and I were saying this is exactly how we want the players to feel. Yeah, absolutely. Like this is this is a group that now I think coming back from this road trip have different expectations of what their level of play should be, what their expectation levels should be, and what their results should be. And and I think, you know, come into this game feeling pretty good about yourself, uh, as as the Blackhawks, you know, five of those six road games, you feel like you had a pretty good pretty good effort. you got rewarded with, you know, three wins in the back half of it and you come in with a a big test game against against the Devils and, you know, you had three different opportunities uh to to lead in the game, especially in the third period with Sam Laughafer is maybe his best goal he’s ever going to score of his career in an individual effort. And you want to try and find that ability to make that be the game winner. and you go to overtime, you don’t win. Sure, you get a point, but you know, this team 2, three years ago, over the last two or three seasons would say you’d celebrate that. But I think expectations within this group are a lot different now. Like they don’t want to celebrate this. like it’s you kind of roll your eyes like yeah we got to you know yeah we got a point but this is a game that they have the mentality and the mindset of like that’s winnable. So it’s good it’s good that they’re at that point. Um but you do feel that frustration of like this was a winnable game against a good team. Uh I know we do have an update on Burkovski. He mentioned why he missed the game. You want to fill people in? Uh illness. Uh it was a it was an illness that he was dealing with. Um so Jeff Blashel said that he was hopeful that he could have uh he Burikovski could have played tonight but just wasn’t able to go. Um he is expecting knock on wood according to Jeff Blashel’s exact words expecting him to play uh and be available Saturday. So if that’s the case, um that’s good news because you saw this team without Burikovski and Dickinson and Nazar um to be down those three guys who have all been really important to this group to to begin the season and still be in a game against the Devils like this. Like you probably think if you have some of those guys in the lineup tonight, even though I know Sam Laughaferty and Landon Slaggard who were replacing those guys scored, um you probably think if if if some of those guys are in the lineup, maybe the result is different tonight. Yeah, I would imagine too. Remember Burkowski’s wife just had a baby and uh I’m sure he’s not super caught up on sleep right now and you go through that exhaustion. He was on the road for 11 days. He probably got plenty of sleep out there. Yeah, maybe. I don’t know. I just uh Yeah. And I mean those worry you out too. I mean that’s you heard Bard talking about the other day where towards the end their legs were getting real heavy and they were feeling that exhaustion. Um and look they just got back first came back. So um hopefully he’ll be ready to go Saturday. I mean it’s definitely much better than hearing, you know, oh he tweaked something. He’s going to miss multiple games. So um I I would guess they would expect him on Saturday. And you know, I also feel that Jason Dickinson will be back on Saturday. He was a full participant in morning skate today. Uh looked, you know, I I thought the way he was out there, you know, this morning he was going to play tonight. So I would imagine after two more days, you’d probably get him. Who knows what Frank Nazar? Uh he hasn’t been on the ice the last two days, but again, two days Yeah. of practice before the next game. So, you know, I would expect Breakovsky and Dickinson both in there against Toronto and and that, you know, that’s a better lineup immediately even if Nazar doesn’t play. Yeah. What did Jeff have to say after the game today, Jeff Blanchel? Well, you did mention the uh the not having your legs kind of factor of things and that was one of the big things that he talked about um after the game. So, this is a bit of a of a longer uh answer here. It’s a two-parter. um Tracy Myers with the with the question, but this is what Blashel kind of had to say. More of a general summary of um of of the night and what kind of led to the effort tonight. I mean, you know, you look at it a few different ways. Like you can look at it, you know, we had multiple leads and then and then and then end up giving up the tire. They went in overtime. It was definitely a game where we didn’t have our best, that’s for sure. And just looked like we had a number of guys without great legs. And so that just kind of, you know, I mean, it it’ll it’ll help answer the question like then you’re kind of just slow to pucks. You’re kind of slow to with the puck. You’re you’re not maybe as sharp uh when you do have it. Like we just weren’t as uh assertive with the puck as we needed to be. We weren’t supporting it well enough in the second. And so it just kind of kept, you know, ending up in our in our in our in our end a lot. You know, you could compare it to some other second periods. I get it. I just think as a whole for the night, I just didn’t think we had our best game. And so, um, you know, on that note, we did find a way to get a point, but we didn’t have our best. And, you know, we know these games coming back, uh, from long trips are hard, and you don’t want it to be. You’re not letting it be an excuse, but, uh, sometimes, you know, in an 82 game schedule, you’re going to have nights where you don’t feel your best, and we were able to find a way to a point. So, I think that part’s good. That’s not a moral victory. It is a point in the standings. Um, you know, the other side of it is we had leads and that we squandered. So, there’s areas we had to clean up. Is that the the not great legs? Is that what you attribute it to? Is the road trip? Usually. Usually, you know, um um you know, we had we had probably, you know, obviously up front, you know, you take Frankie out, take Berky out, take Dicki out, you get a you know, you’re you just lose some of that mojo a little bit. Um other guys came in and and and played hard. But you are losing a little bit of that mojo and and so um you know they have injuries everybody has injuries in the league but you just again it kind of it probably all those things compounded each other and we just didn’t didn’t have our best. It it took a lot of um restraint for me to not do an Austin Powers um impression and say I think I’ve lost my mojo in the middle of that uh press conference. So big of me to not do that. Sarah Austin Powers is a movie from the 2000s. I do know that. I do know that. Good, good, good, good. It’s good to know. I know some things. Well, you’ve been hanging out with us a little bit for the last couple years. We’ve we’ve helped you uh olden up a little bit. Uh, I actually looked it up today because I I was worried and I I it just felt that like even during the Stanley Cup years when the Blackhawks used to have the circus trip which was very similar to the trip that just went on. It was always around Thanksgiving, you know, they’d be on the road for two weeks and that first game back always seemed to be a chore. Yeah, it’s tough. And I looked back and sure enough like even during the cup runs with those team, you know, those teams full of Hall of Famers, they always struggle in that first game back from a long road trip cuz there’s just a lot to do. You know, you you’re home for the first time in two weeks. You got a family and your wife just throws the kids here. I’m taking the day off. Yeah. I’m taking the day off. You’re taking the kids to school today. You’re doing the grocery shopping. Look at that laundry. It’s not going to do itself. Yeah. you know, they get to go and be like real husbands and dads for a couple of days. Um, so yeah, it’s not a surprise. Again, it sounds like excuses, but like I I wasn’t expecting them to be crisp. Yeah. And like on top of their game right away. Well, and just like that, there was supposed to be practice tomorrow. There is not. Good. I think Jeff Flashel sensing, let’s give these guys a day to recover, get their legs under them. And that means I can we all can sleep in tomorrow. Yeah, man. Maybe we should ask Jake at least take a good nap. We should see if we switch days off cuz we’re off Friday, but they practice Friday. It’s your problem. Oh, see if we can figure that out. I don’t know. Anyway, we’ll see what happens. Yeah. What else did uh did did Blash have to say, Mario? Uh, one of the interesting things, um, you know, a lot of attention paid to not having Nazar Dickinson and, um, Berkovski available. So, you you see the rotation in the forwards group, but there was also a little bit of a rotation in the defenseman group. Um, Sam Renzel has been right next to Alex Flic all season uh, on the what you would call the top pair for the defensive group, even though they are rotating the seven guys. But um looks like looked like in in warm-ups and was was evident in the game that uh Louis Creier had found himself uh in that spot next to Lassic and Renzel was actually the guy that was kind of shuffled through and tonight Sam Renzel a defenseman low uh just under 12 minutes of of ice time and third lowest on the team. Krevier and and Levinov were third tied for third with 18 minutes each uh amongst the defenseman of of ice time. So we’ve seen Levinov and Krevier’s minutes increasing. We’re seeing Renzel’s decreasing and actually something pointed out by I I assume it was Dave Melton with Second City Hockey, but he pointed out that like all 100% of Sam Renzel’s uh zone starts tonight were in the offensive zone. uh and he still didn’t have a great night analytically. So, um Blashell kind of addressed making that that change and um what they might uh might might try and do with Renzel moving forward. Well, I would say that right now, you know, Reigns has kind of gone through a cycle here where he’s given up a lot of chances. Uh Krevy’s uh uh been a really really good defender for us. Um so, going to the game, we were looking at potentially having blast and ky against Hughes and uh his year and that that happened a lot. Um, we got to get Blast back going, you know, or not blast, we got to get Rins back going. He we’ll get him back uh in the right direction, but he’s just we got to eliminate the minuses that the the And I don’t mean minuses necessarily goes against, but the the chances against just an area that he’s just got to clean up. I mean, that’s great coaching. Yeah, it’s fair. And that’s an advantage of using the seven defenseman every night is you can scale back a guy’s Wait, I was told they were showcasing Louis Create in the Maple Leafs, right? First time all season was said. Yeah, I I saw a I saw a Maple Leaf fan tweet before the game saying, “Oh, Maple Leafs have scouts there.” Yeah, because they’re playing here on Saturday pro scouting. That might be why. Oh, and now the now the Blackhawks are showcasing Louis creier cuz they’re playing seven defenseman. They’ve been playing seven defenseman all year, you And Jeff loves Louis Creier. Yeah. Find somebody to love you as much as Jeff Blasio loves Louis. I’m working on it. I’m sorry I derailed your point about Renzel, but no, I mean this it’s a product of the seven defenseman system that you can it could be a different guy every night that plays the 19 to 21 minutes. We’ve seen Kaiser do it. We’ve seen Renzel do it. Krevier is getting the run at it. Lechenov, you know, you can pick and choose your spots. It’s it’s been working. And that’s why you still get questions every day. I’m sure you guys do too in mailbags and social media about when are they going to go to the 12 and six? You don’t have to. I mean, it it’s it’s working well for this situation. Now, maybe when you get everybody healthy and if you’re going to keep Oliver Moore here, maybe you’re forced into into that. But right now, it the seven defenseman system has been working very well for this team because you’re able to shelter these young guys or give them some more leash or pull them back again as each game comes and goes. Yeah, I I I don’t have a lot of concern about Renzo. I think what’s interesting is he was the one we sort of assumed would really be settled in and and really study and I think aside from your once a game moment from Ardum Lev’s been the better of the two and the more dependable of the two and it looks like I think right now Lev has more trust of Jeff Flashel than Renzel does. I mean Lev tonight let’s see 18:30 of ice time. Uh, that’s pretty high up there in terms of defenseman. Uh, is that leading? No, Vassic played 22, man. Tavo played 25 minutes tonight. Yeah, that aside from Vassic, Leon was second minutes with 1830. So, he was he really trust him. You’re waving. Yes. Can you guys hear me? Now, I can. Yeah. Okay. I was saying he had the third most of defenseman. Like I was trying to scream it at you guys. Yeah. So we we we we missed you for a second. That’s my bad, Mario. I wouldn’t say we missed him. Okay. We couldn’t hear him. All right. third in time, but still he is the point being that he is he is he is earning the trust of of BL and I think has unexpectedly quickly leaprogged Renzel in that category cuz I we were all talking like man Renzel is going to be the number one guy immediately and in the conversation and he was Chicago’s Brock Besser and he was the he was the sexy Brock Faber. He was the sexy sleeper Calder pick. And listen, he still Yeah. He’s a young defenseman that, you know, the league adjusts and he has to adjust back like and I’m sure there’s going to be ups and downs where Le where Leonoff is going to get Yep. reeled in for a few minute, you know, a couple less minutes and I and Renzelle will get that responsibility again. It’s good coaching. We want attentive. Yeah. And we’ve seen all these young defenseman go through that at at different points. Renzelle um is is not immune to that. I mean I I think you know Vic came in and we thought wow okay he’s going to be a full-time NHLer right away and he spent a full season in Rockford and Wyatt Kaiser up and down between Rockford and and Chicago before he finally like found that groove in the NHL and um same with Lechnov like you know he he spent time down there. So I don’t think that’s the next step with Sam Renzel. think they’re going to still give him the opportunity to find it uh here in in the NHL and I think they want him to do that. Um because I think that they do like that seven defenseman rotation. Um but I mean it’s it’s all part of of learning the league and we’ve continuously, you know, harped on, you know, Duncan Keith was not a Hall of Famer the first time he stepped on the ice. Um, it it it’ll take some time and I think it’s it’s not it’s not troubling if Sam Renzel needs to have some some minutes uh pulled back on him, some responsibilities pulled back on them because you have other defenseman you can trust. If you were in a situation where Sam Renzel had to play 20 minutes a night and he was having these struggles, um, then you’d be in a much worse spot. But because of Lev and because of Creier, you’re not you’re not in that spot on the right side. Hey, case in point, look at the hero tonight for New Jersey, Simone Neich. Where was he taken in his draft? Was he fifth? Second overall. Second. Yeah, second overall. And he struggled his first season, you know, as a 19-year-old in the league and then spent some time in the AHL and now all of a sudden he’s on a heater. He, you know, he had he had five career goals at the start of the week and he’s had four in the last two games. Yeah. um and he’s starting to figure it out. And so a guy like Levino, we’re still going to see those ups and downs. A guy like Renzel, we’re going to see those ups and downs. But when it clicks, you’re going to be like, “Ah, there it is.” Well, and look, like if you feel, and I think we’re probably a little bit ahead of ourselves here, but like if Bashel feels like Renzel needs a little bit of time in Rockford to get a reset, Kevin Cinskyy’s got 10 points in 13 games. He’s playing really well down there. And maybe with him playing with a little more confidence, you give him a look. Maybe you cherry pick an opponent or two and see, hey, let’s give it a look. I don’t know. You’ve got options. But I don’t have many concerns about Renzel. I still when I watch him out there, most of the time he’s making good, smart plays. He’s not a liability. No, he’s not he’s not costing you games. Yeah. I think he is just what we saw at the end of last year was so impressive. Like, oh my god, this guy looks like he’s been playing for 10 years. It hasn’t been that this year, but there’s to me there’s no red flag at all. There’s nothing that says, “Oh my god, we were way off about this guy.” No. No. You’re you expect young defenseman to hit lols and he’s hit a little bit of one. But again, if if this is his worst, great cuz he’s still pretty dependable. It’s It’s just growing pains. You’re going to get it. Even if Sam Renzel felt, you know, ahead of his development curve, like you you’re still going to get him cuz this is his first actual season in the NHL, not nine games at the end of the year. All right. Any nuggets or tidbits before we spring you? Um, Blashell did uh have some some good things to say about um the games that Sam Laughy and Lannon Slagger played. Um and you know was was praising Lafery for you know the kind of professionalism that he’s uh carried himself with this season being in not an ideal situation that any player would want to be in where they’re just scratched constantly and you know in and out of the lineup and not really knowing if and when you’re ever going to get in. But um he’s just praised how he’s handled himself and um said the uh the goal tonight was was sick. So, um, he’s not lying. So, it’s it’s it’s nice to see Sam Laughaferty rather, um, be able to have a moment like that. Um, given the way that, you know, he came to the organization and, um, you know, just kind of felt like just the odd man out inherently. Um, so for him to get in, provide some depth scoring in highlight real fashion, like that’s just that’s just a really cool moment for him. 100%. All right. Thank you, man. We’ll talk to you uh tomorrow or Friday depending on what we decide to do with our off day. All right. All right. That’s Mario Tierbasi from the United Center. Make sure you’re following him on Twitter, Mario_tbosi for all your Blackhawks notes and news and stuff. All right, Sarah. I like this stuff. Are we entering the frat house? Yes, sir. Our featured Blackhawk today in the frigh house is Conor Bard. This is what my car is going to sound like on the way to Rockford someday. That is absolutely true. Bard with his 10th goal of the year, extending his point streak to nine games. Played 23 minutes and 23 seconds in this one. Double MJ’s uh minus two. Uh-oh. uh had two shots on goal and six total shot attempts and won three of his six faceoffs, which means 50%. Take that every day. That’s right. So, uh good to see him extend. Yeah. And you while he was not as effective as we’re used to and as dominant as he’s been, uh there were still a lot of moments from him in this game that were very impressive. Um, and you do see without Burkovski, it hurts because Burkovski is a guy who other teams need to be aware of. He is a goal scorer. He is a threat. And they’ve built some real good chemistry first 15 or so games. So, having, you know, uh, Oliver Moore out there, yeah, fast, exciting player, but has not really ever played with Baddard for an extended period. So, you know, you saw a little of that indecisiveness from Moore where if it’s Burkovsky out there, they know where they’re going to be and and things look a little smoother. So, um not by far not Conor Bernard’s best game, but hey, scored a goal, kept that goal streak alive and and 10 goals on the season. Kid’s been on fire lately, so just keep it keep it rolling. you know, he’s just he’s just playing with that confidence that we’ve been waiting for for for the first two seasons. It’s the confidence and it’s the comfort level that he has at being not only an NHL player, but an NHL star. He’s accepted it. He’s embraced it and you know, this is the guy we’ve seen over the last nine games. It’s who he is. Yes. It’s funny how you don’t call a guy’s career a bust when he’s 19 and still scoring 60 points in a season. Like, Right. Yeah. Yes. And the guy he played against tonight, Jack Hughes, is a good reminder of that. Jack Hughes is a guy who started his career a little more. Compare Jack Hughes’s first two seasons of Conor Bernards. Okay, I will. It’s there is no comparison. Jack Hughes was not very good his first two years. First two years for Jack Hughes, uh, 61 games, 21 points, seven goals, 14 assists. Second year, 11 goals, 20 assists, 31 points, and 56 games. People calling him a bust. Yes, he’s a minus 26 his rookie year. He Conor Bernard had more points his rookie season than Jack Hughes had his first two years. And then in his third year, third year, 56 points in 49 games. So you’re saying it takes like to year three for these guys to really take that step. What year is this for Conor Bernard? And then in year four, by the way, 99 points in 78 games. And this is year three for Conor Bernard. Good stuff. What is his current pace? Do we know? Uh, let’s see. We do quick math here. 26 points in 17 games. That’s got to That’s got to be 100 points. Uh, let’s see. Yep. 26 / 17 * 82 equals 125. Okay, that’s a good pace. That’s pretty good. That’s that’s a uh that’s a postseason trophy pace he’s on right now. We’ll take that for Fortunately, Nathan McKinnon is on pace for 19. Nathan McKinnon did that this weekend. Unfortunately, did that just in the Edmonton game. Yeah, 100%. Uh, all right. We got to get the winner of the uh game pucks. Is it still a runway, Sarah? Is it still a Laugher for Laughy? I think I I sent you the poll. I think it was uh 69% voted for him. Nice performance from him all around. Yeah, Laferty with 69% of the vote. Louis Creier with 20%. And Nick Felino was 11. Sam took it away though the whole time. I have to update my notes because if I don’t do it now, I will forget. Adding Sam Lafery to the docket. We’re all going to forget that this happened probably sooner rather than later. Well, I updated him every game. So, here are your current standings for game pucks. Spencer Knight with six, Connor with three, Andre Burkovski with two, uh, Colton Doc, Tyler Batuzi, Arvid Solder Bloom, Sam Laferty, and Lucas Reichel. All with a game puck. Kind of surprised Tyler Buzzi only has one. I think it’s because because they’re always when Bard has a great game, too. Um, and speaking of a one game puck for Lucas Reichel, that matches his point total in Vancouver. So, congrats to Lucas. Worst day of my life as a Hawks fan, I’ve been told. I mean, I’m starting to think Kyle Davidson knows what he’s doing. I don’t know. Just a hunch. I don’t know. I don’t think so. I don’t know. Let Let it play out. He never played the game. Uh, speaking of silliness, do do we address what our our quickly what our pals on? Yes. What can we do? So, I I just I want this is a good it’s our first reminder of the year that people having a conversation about something is not a rumor. It’s not a rumor. It’s not speculation. It’s just, hey, what about this? What about this? Yes. Just as we discussed yesterday, would Jordan Kyru make sense for the Blackhawks? That doesn’t mean that those conversations are happening. It means we’re talking about it. Just as what Chaos was talking about Stephen Samos to the Blackhawks, right, which is a terrible idea. I’m not interested. No, I wasn’t interested last summer and I sure as hell aren’t interested now. Last summer I was a little bit. I’ll be honest. Nah, not for what he was signed for. Um, he’s got four points in 18 games. Uh, why do you need Steven Stamos when you have Nick Felino? Well, Nick Felino had two assists in the third period tonight. Steven Stansco has one assist in 15 games. Yikes. Steven Stamco’s great love Hall of Famer. Awesome player. The Nashville Predator version of Steven Stamco sucks out loud. 35year-old with a long injury history. Don’t need it. It’s going to at some point it’s going to fade. This team, this particular team does not need a slow, underachieving veteran, regardless of how great his career was. Two years ago, when you’re rebuilding and you’re looking for a a culture guy, a Taylor Hall type guy, fine. Now, no, absolutely not. I get the conversation. Yeah. From a distance, I could see why it would make sense for people. From a distance, love that song. Steven’s watching. Anyway, um and the fact that it’s two more years left on that contract. Piss off. Yeah. No. Thank you. What if they threw what if they gave you something else? Matthew Wood. Fine. We got one. You throw new shirts. Hey, you know, it could be like the the the Tavo and Bickl trade reversed. Yeah. Give us Matthew Wood and and we’ll take Stamco and just buy them out. Yeah. Beach Picnic Joy says, “Kyle, are you listening?” There is nothing about Kyle Davidson that would go out and get Stephen Samos. No. Everything absolutely not now. As again may two years ago to bring in a name and bring in a a veteran guy to help. Sure. Right now, no way. Makes zero sense. Can we talk our buddy Tim Evans off the off the ledge? Tim seems very concerned that this goal from Sam Laughafer is going to somehow cement his role in the Blackhawks lineup. As soon as Nazar and Dickinson are back, Sam Lafford will be back eating popcorn with us. Your deal maybe eight years 800,000. Uh I’m also uh Yeah, don’t worry. It’s going to be okay, everybody. All right. All right. We’re going to wrap the show up. We’ll be back tomorrow at 2:30 probably cuz our bosses are sleeping. We’ll see what they say. If we’re off tomorrow, cuz the Hawks are off tomorrow, we’ll be back Friday at 2:30. Either way, we’ll be back soon. We’ll keep you updated on social media. 1. Amazing game! But if hurts to lose it. They could really have used Burakowskivand Nazar in 3 on 3. That said, it felt like the Hawks were on the penalty kill for most of the night while 5 on 5

  2. Lafferty & Slaggert too took some ribbing in the chat. I was participating but want to here say an honest GG to both.

Got a chance to suit up and made the most of it. Can't be easy trying to hold onto an NHL roster spot and even if their time w/ the Beloved not long they'll at least know – and can say – they both "had a game" and good for 'em that.

  3. This was a good test for the Hawks. Sucks to not get the extra point but they played their ass off tonight against a really good Devils team. Bedard is still keeping his point streak. Oliver Moore played really good tonight and Knight was great in net.

  4. Credit the devils for never letting their foot off the gas, so far this is the best performance the Hawks have seen from an opposition. Overall good game for Chicago especially considering missing two top six forwards. The D had a solid game, good puck moving, we lost coverage more and more in the third and their top line was out every other shift and just kept gaining momentum. Tough to stop I hope they take all the lessons from this. Unbelievable goal from Lafferty.

  5. I was expecting a trap game. They played with more energy and determination than I thought they would. I like the attitude from Foligno saying this team has higher expectations than moral victories now. Good to see the boys have the winning mentality and being hungry for it.

  6. As an observation, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and now NJ (all upper echelon teams), they are getting beat with long stretch passes thru the middle of the ice. I think if they can figure that piece out defensively and get everybody back healthy, they will able to handle these type of teams.
