Doug Christie GOES IN on His Sacramento Kings Team After Embarrassing Loss to Hawks
Sacramento Kings head coach Doug Christie just went nuclear on his roster, especially the veterans after a pathetic 133 to 100 loss to the Atlanta Hawks. Wrapping up this fivegame home stand with a 1 and4 record. If you’re frustrated, if you’re angry, well, Doug Christie is gonna be speaking your language. And you’ll hear it right here on Locked on Kings. You are Locked on Kings, your daily Sacramento Kings podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. And now, ladies and gentlemen, it is that time. Time for another episode of Locked on Kings. Hello and welcome to Locked on Kings, your podcast hub for Sacramento Kings coverage all season long. This episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Right now, new customers can bet just $5. And if your bet wins, you’ll get $300 in bonus bets to use across the app. Head to fanduel.com to get started. My name is Matt George. I have the privilege of being your host here. I’m a Sacramento sports anchor and reporter for ABC 10 News. And you best believe I got things to say. You best believe I would love nothing more than to scream into this camera my frustrations and disgust at how the Sacramento Kings played tonight on their home floor. We can’t even call it playing. how the Sacramento Kings gave up, quit, didn’t care on their home floor in front of their home crowd against an Atlanta Hawks team that’s without Trey Young. Kings get absolutely obliterated 133 to 100. But as much as I got things to say, I’m going to pump the brakes on myself because there’s nothing nothing that I could say that could top or be more important than what your head coach, Doug Christie, had to say after the game. This is not the full press conference. It’s slightly edited down. I cut about two minutes off. I also cleaned it up in terms of the profanity for any of our young listeners out there so you could hear it, too. If you want to listen to the full thing without censoring and uncut, you can go to my Twitter account, Matt George Sack, uh, and and watch the entire thing there. But here is a very passionate, pissed off Doug Christie after this embarrassing Kings performance. Doug, in the third quarter, you took out all the starters. Was that a message sub? Well, it says 33 to 8 in tren fast break point. So yeah, listen everybody, every single person I look in the mirror every morning, I’m going to do whatever I can to make sure that we write the ship, but unacceptable period. And if they being real, they going to tell you the same thing. Coach Christie, there’s a lot of things that could be said about, you know, that that stat box, but 31-3 fast break eight. That’s a Did that sound like that’s a little lacadasial to you? Definitely. 33 to 8 in fast break points just says that you you not getting back, you not communicating, you not building walls, you not being physical. Um, you know, it also goes with your shot profile. If you gonna shoot bad shots, if you gonna shoot unbalanced floor shots and turn the ball over and live ball turnovers, you know, 20 point uh 20 turnovers and give up 20 points and 33 fast break points. Listen, this this ain’t about anything but competition and effort. Period. You could play that team 10 times and I doubt you would get a result like that, especially after after this. Play them nine more times. Not if you got no damn pride. To the point of competition and effort, it seems like these four games have all kind of been that similar theme. Is do you see it getting like worse? Is it regressing in any way for the for you guys? I mean, there’s a there’s confidence. There’s a lot of different things that can go go into that. But, you know, you’re professionals. You you signed up for this and this this league is hard. And with that being said, this is only game 12. I mean, it’s a lot of basketball to be played. You’ve demonstrated that you can do this. You You played against Oklahoma City and competed at a high level. You went into Milwaukee and beat them. I mean, you’ve competed against really good teams. And make no mistake about it, all these teams, I mean, Minnesota, Eastern uh Western Conference Finals, OKC Western Conference Finals, eventual champion, Denver Nuggets semi. Like, these are really good teams. But ain’t nobody checking for that. You going to have to play your way out of it. Period. If you’ve ever been to any gym, wreck hood, anywhere, get ran off the court and and see if you get some respect. I’ve been to all them and I’ve taken butt whapons. Like that’s that’s part of it. But you know what I do? Do I’mma come back. Nah, that ain’t it. You are not gonna represent Sacramento Kings. It just ain’t happening, man. Not not why I’m here. And you know how that goes. So, I’m a realist. It’s part It’s part of our business. But nah, put on a jersey, represent it properly. These people need to come into the the turn styles and they need to be proud when they leave here about the product that they see. Not embarrassed. Excuse me. Unacceptable. Period. It just it is, you know, this a simple one. This ain’t even hard. You know, sometimes you come up here and you trying to figure out, well, you know, maybe I go back and look at I don’t need to look at no tape. Probably won’t look at it. I seen it once live. Damn. If you want to look at it again. Our families are in here. These people are our family. I’d be damned if I go out and represent like that for them. I’m glad my wife was at home. Doug, kind of building off of that, your connection with this fan base has been consistent over your entire career here in Sacramento. You’ve said you want them to feel proud every single night when they leave. How should this fan base, you think, feel just with this this team and this game and where everything is at right now? I mean, it’s going to get right and it gets I told you guys yesterday, it’s going to get bumpy because when you start to rattle the cage and say like this is unacceptable, not everybody reacts to how you want them to react. You know, you but we going to do it. And on the other side of that, it’s going to happen. But the you know it I was embarrassed. I wish I could have put on the jersey at 55. I would have showed you better than that. At least I’mma use all six fouls. I can’t move but I’mma foul the out of somebody. Like people just running around, running down the lane, not grabbing nobody and then they just grabbing, holding, pushing, you know, so much that the refs was like, “Well, that’s how they play. because that’s how we should play. And the ref should say that’s how they play. Can’t call them all, but ours is blatant because we ain’t touching nobody. We’re not physical. So when you not physical and you’re not touching nobody, as soon as you do touch somebody, it’s a foul. And then you’re looking at the ref crazy crazy. Like, nah, I say really too too much to the refs cuz the refs can’t help you on this. This is all an individual saying we bringing it and they can. They have and I’ll be damned if they will. Doug, you have a a locker room with several established veterans and and leaders. Yes. How would you like them to respond or or lead and step up in this? I would like them to lead because you said veterans and leaders. So, they need to lead because we got young players in there watching this and I’m going to text every one of them young players. That’s not acceptable. Do not even think about even trying to equate that. That is okay. Do not do it. I will not let you do that because that ain’t it ain’t cool. No. So, they need to lead. What do you want for your team? What do you want for this city? If you want something more than what that was, because that was trash, then lead them, talk to them, demonstrate for them, go out there and show them. Like, listen, maybe you only got 10 minutes of like, man, put it down. Well, if that’s what you got, then that’s what you give. Not floating for 30 and playing for 10. Play the game. The game is to be respected. There’s a way to play this game. That ain’t it. Hats off to Atlanta because they played the right way. Doug, uh, just to reiterate, your connection with this city and these fans is is, you know, obviously well known and and um your passion, you know, for the the team, the organization. How do you how do you get the guys back there to to care and want this as much as as you do? Um, you know, this one is past me, Jason. This is about you. I know what I feel. I know what time I get up. I know what time I put into this. I know how serious I am about my job. I know what I want for them. And I even take it a step further and say, I know what the organization wants. But you got to want that as an individual. Individually when you look in the mirror. And then after that then you go collective. And right now that’s where we run into the problem is the individual and the collective. Individually you got to bring it. And then collectively you got to love on each other. You got to love your brother enough to to help him to talk to be there to have extra efforts and multiple efforts on the defensive end of the floor and fly around because I’m here to tell you it’s hard. Defense is not for the faint of hearts. That’s why everybody don’t do it. But if the last thing that I do, we will put a product out there that they like, damn, he did that and they doing that. It just is is how it’s going to be. We’re not we’re not going to accept nothing less. I don’t want our fans to accept. To your point, don’t accept nothing less. Nah, don’t. You don’t have to. It’s people that actually will do things the right way. Might not be as talented, but guess what? That’s when the hockey shift came in. We got some young kids. But you know what they going to try to do? They going to try to compete. Now, you know, Max’s not as talented as Porzingis yet. and he got into trouble and he get back cut and Okay, but it ain’t from a lack of effort. It ain’t from a lack of want. Go ahead. What are your veterans telling you? Because you got a whole team of them out there and you had to pull all five of them. Um, they saying they want to compete, but one thing that I know is you can talk about it all you want. But this ain’t a what do you this ain’t no lawyerly area where we going to be verbal competing. We not we not doing that. This ain’t a debate show. This is physical. This is basketball. So you can tell me all day and you can tell yourself all day and you can tell your teammates all day, but one thing that I do know is the ball is thrown up and that’s when you need to step up and show that. Period. Every night. 48 minutes 24 seconds at a time. This episode of the Locked On podcast is brought to you by Wayfair. Doug Christie might go down when this is all said and done in a blaze of glory. And I’m all for it. Truth be told, I am all for it. Honestly, the comments that Doug made tonight, the way he spoke directly about his roster, the veterans on his roster consisting of multiple Hall of Fame caliber players, the way he spoke about them is typically not something you see a head coach in the NBA do. probably isn’t classified as head coach behavior and of course carries the risk of alienating and losing your locker room with comments like that. But I said before the season even started and I’ll say it again here. If any of those players in that locker room quit on Doug Christie, give up on Doug Christie. If Doug loses any of them, they can pack their bags and they can get stepping because there is a consistent theme with a lot of players in that locker room and head coaches and them giving up or quitting on those head coaches. It’s never been Mike Brown’s fault. And a lot of this is not almost all of this is not Doug Christiey’s fault. His comments after the game are refreshing. They’re refreshing because let me tell you something. I know, and I already knew this, but it’s it’s reiterated. I know without a doubt that Doug Christie cares. I know it. It’s one thing for a player to say, “Yeah, we care about winning. We want to do better.” recycling the same old garbage that we hear after every single loss. And we’ve been hearing it for 20 freaking years. But for a coach to stand up, step up to the podium, step up to the microphone and express the same frustration that this entire fan base is feeling, express how unacceptable that performance or effort from this Sacramento Kings team. I don’t care that Zack Lavine didn’t play. I don’t care that Keegan Murray’s been out the entire season. I don’t care that Malik Monk was out. The players who did play, who were available to play, didn’t show up. Refused to show up. This group of veterans throughout this entire home stand has been playing like they know what we know, which is that this roster is broken, poorly constructed, and will never work. They are playing like it and like they are waiting for December through February to come around for trade season to open so Scott Perry can get them all up out of there. Scott Perry talks about h not wanting hostages, wanting volunteers. All those guys look like hostages on the floor. And you know who that poorly reflects on them. Of course, it’s a poor reflection on really Kings ownership as well as they’re the only ones left over from the mess of last season. But believe it or not, the mess is not gone. Doug Christie has just inherited it. Scott Perry has inherited it. And to some extent, yes, both of them have added a little garbage on top of the pile. But we’re talking scraps, rappers on top of rubbage that this Kings team put together for themselves, made for themselves really over the last year and a half. This is an absolute pathetic, pathetic performance. These veterans should be ashamed of themselves. Truth be told, and I don’t say that lightly because these guys can all do things that I could never dream of doing. These guys have more talent in their pinky when playing basketball than I will ever have. And I understand people like myself who have never played this game professionally. Saying something like, “These guys should be ashamed is silly.” But honestly, how can any of those guys, Doug Christie talked a lot about in that press conference, looking in the mirror? How can a lot of those guys look in the mirror and be proud of who they were as professional athletes tonight? How can they look at their paychecks that they collected after this game? How could they look at the attendance of 15,000 Kings fans who wasted wasted their money coming into the Golden One Center to watch whatever the hell that was embarrassing. Embarrassing. This is the this is these plus minuses. Demar Rozan minus 31 four points only played 19 minutes and he’s lucky he basically got the night off. Damontis Sabonis minus 38. Pathetic. Russell Westbrook. He’s been good. He’s arguably been the King’s best player. Tonight on his birthday, unfortunately, he was rubbish. Minus 34. Dennis Shruder better scoring wise than the last three games. That’s not saying much. Still minus 20. I know Keon Ellis was a minus 23, but the key, it’s poetic that for most of this game, Keon Ellis was the only one really doing anything. Poetic considering what’s been happening with Keon in his playing time over the course of this home stand. Keon had 20 points, six of 11 from three-point range. Whether Keon was showcasing to get more minutes or showcasing for some team in the league to come and trade for him, I don’t know what his motivations were, but he stepped up and he at least put up some numbers, put up some points. But these veterans, man, they got to be embarrassed. And what what bothers me even more is we heard Demar Rosen multiple times preeason and training camp talk about, man, the narratives about us, the things that I see, that pisses me off, man. That that motivates me. That pisses me off. You’re proving them right. You’re proving them all right. Clearly didn’t piss you off and motivate you enough to do something about it and not mail in a pathetic performance like this. And of course, it’s not just all on Demar Rosen. is the one that said it. Russell Westbrook. Again, been one of the best players, if not the best player on the Kings so far this season. For the most part, we’ve been praising Russell Westbrook. One of the things Russell Westbrook said in his press conference after the Kings signed him, he was asked like what surprises him or stands out to him the most about this roster. He said, “How much people are doubting us, how much people doubt this roster.” There’s a reason why they doubt it. Because of performances like this 12 freaking games into the season, embarrassing. embarrassing. And look, this roster, there are some noob faces like Russ and like Shruder, but primarily the core of this roster, take Zack Lavine out of it. He didn’t play tonight. The core of this roster, the main two guys in Deont Sabonis and Demard Rosen are the same two guys that were here when Mike Brown was here. Same two guys that put up performances like them this when Mike Brown was here. Hey, look. When Mike Brown got fired in game five of that six-game losing streak at home, when De’Arren Fox gave a foul point play a four-point play to Jaden Ivy at the end of that that Detroit Pistons game, there’s no doubt that vibes were horrendous at that time. It cost Mike Brown his job. But Jesus, at least we got to December, late December before that happened. Here’s this horrible losing streak at home. These horrible performances at home where the Kings are getting blown out repeatedly, time and time again on their home floor. 12 games in. We’re halfway through November and these are the performances that we’re getting. Shameful. Shameful. Deata Sabonis major part of that problem. Sabonis has been terrible. Continues to be terrible this entire season. He is a shell of himself. And what’s funny is De Manis Sabonis clearly did not see eye to eye with Mike Brown. Wasn’t a fan of Mike Brown. One of the reasons why Mike Brown is no longer here for being completely honest. Not the reason, but certainly one of the reasons. And yet Mike Brown was the one that actually knew how to utilize Demand Sabonis effectively because Doug Christie, who was Deontest Sabonis’ developmental coach, who spent more time working with Domas one-on-one than Mike Brown or anybody on that coaching staff did. Doug Christie can’t find a way to get Dean Sabonis to be a fraction of himself at this point. Domomas needs to look in the mirror. Demar needs to look at the mirror. And do not come to me with any sort of excuses. I don’t care that this is the third game in four nights. I don’t care that it’s the second night of a backto-back. I don’t care that they played at 8:00 p.m. an 8 p.m. tip off the night before. I don’t care. Kings fans don’t care. We don’t care about your excuses. Show up. give a you know what. Meet the passion and desire to put on for this city that your head coach has. But almost this entire roster, you know what I’ll say? This entire roster has failed to do that. They don’t look like they care. And I feel for Doug, man. This episode of the Lockdown Kings podcast is brought to you by Built. Through the over 40 years that the Sacramento Kings have been here in the capital city, the vast vast majority of those 40 years have been nothing but losing and frustration. The most consistent thing about this organization over those 40 plus years is the support of the fans, the loyalty of the fans to a level and the passion of fans to a level that quite frankly this organization does not deserve. But it is special. It is specific to this market, this city and how much they love this team. That is the most consistent thing that has not wavered. Now, has attendance dropped at times over the course of losing seasons? Yes. But the fans were always there. They always cared. They rallied enough to save this team from going to Seattle. This fan base has always cared. The worst possible thing that the Sacramento Kings organization, this organization, this ownership group, this regime can do is make those fans indifferent to get those fans to stop caring. And I promise you, this roster, as constructed, is on the war path to accomplish that. This roster has sucked the life out of this organization. Sucked the life out of this fan base after the beam team year just a handful of years ago. A taste of that success. How rapidly and brutally this organization has fallen from grace. Not because they were pushed because but because they jumped off the edge themselves. It it honestly should be studied. It really genuinely should be studied how horrible this organization has handled these last few years to a point where this fan base I don’t blame anyone for saying I’m done. I need a break. I can’t do it anymore. That being said, like I promised you on yesterday’s Locked on Kings podcast, Thursday morning, which honestly at the time of recording this, it’s almost Thursday morning, 9:30 a.m. Pacific time, I’m going to be releasing or at least the plan is right around that time. I’m going to be releasing a Locked on Kings podcast, a special edition of Locked on Kings, where I do my absolute best to answer the question, what is the plan? What is the plan? There is one. We’re in the first phase of it from what I understand. And this is not me just coming up with things off the top of my head and connecting dots myself. This is coming from extensive conversations with people inside and around this organization. I am very proud of what I’ve been able to put together. I not I’m not promising you that everything you’re hear is going to be groundbreaking, life-changing. I’m not promising you that everything you’re going to hear you are going to like. But hopefully by the end of that podcast tomorrow, you will understand that there is a plan. Doesn’t mean it’s going to work. But it exists. And after a night like tonight, it’s getting even more underway. So, tune in tomorrow. Special edition of Locked on Kings tomorrow morning. Some of you might be listening to this podcast when you first wake up. Check to see if this episode has dropped already. If not, it’s coming very, very soon. Listen to them back to back because I promise you, I don’t know if you’re going to feel better, but I got some answers for you. Appreciate your support as always. Can’t wait to have you join me on that episode tomorrow of the Locked on Kings podcast. Until then, my name is Matt George. You’ve been listening to Locked on Kings, part of the Locked On Podcast Network.
Matt George reacts to Sacramento Kings head coach Doug Christie’s fiery postgame comments directed at his players after their 133-100 loss to the Atlanta Hawks.

The first six games of the year the Kings were very competitive with toughest schedule in NBA but since that time they have gone downhill. Was at the game last night; I have attended hundreds of games; was a season ticket holder for over 30 years starting in season two; I don’t remember a game that bad at home.
Doug taking shots at the GM and ownership. They signed and traded players who are just playing to take shots with no effort and collecting paychecks. They don’t care about winning or Sacramento.
It’s going to be worst. Management probably knows they are fucked. Coaching knows these cats don’t care. Young players look at the vets and how toxic they are. Doug about to lose the locker room.
I hope the "Plan" is trading all the veterans and tanking because this ain't working. If we trade for :"Win now and lose in the play in again" And lose picks I'm gonna be pissed.
Doug needs to talk with Bol Bol we need another big on the team so the Derozan and Sabonis can move down a spot where they belong
These guys are making more money in a year than most of the fans in the seats will make in a lifetime. If they can't play their ass off in fron of the people who pay their salaries they need to retire.
BTW: That Sacramento offense is down right ugly, so predictable, the ball sticks to whoever has it for a long time, making the opposing team defend it easily. While Atlanta's? That was amazing, the ball zips from side to side resulting in either wide open threes or cuts to the basket, 42 assists, amazing.
Wasted so much money to build these bums a new arena. Should have stayed at ARCO Arena.
thats a terrible lineup, veterans=old, Malik hurt as always, he said he wouldve injured the opposition fouling them, he's silly and looked dumb running his mouth like that
its interesting to see christie like that after all the years i watched him on the kings… he seemed to me as just a street baller and good defender, but yeah he had/has an important role on that kings team
I stand with Doug 😮 we had Zach Day off 😮 and all the vets took the day off on the Court 😮 sit all the vets and stars ⭐️ and call up G League 😮 this is a good Coach and the took a dump on Doug
Line up needs to Be Westbrook and Keon with the rooks and second year players
Stop shooting 3s when we are up! Get the ball in the paint and get fouls then once they dbling down low, then dish back out for the 3.
would kings trade sabonis?
This team is embarrassing. I can’t even watch them no more. Go to games every year. I’m not going this year. Waste of my money trying to support a team.
He can say what he wants, but he’s a terrible coach x and o wise and really should just be an assistant far down the bench. I just really wish we as fans would look at the macro (long term vision) over the micro (what’s wrong with the current team) and just look at okc and how they build with a vision and culture mindset. Then copy and paste. With the right structure at the top even with meh talent you fall in the heat realm which is a fun competitive team.
"…watch whatever the hell that was" LOL To some extent, the Sacramento fans are to blame, they keep on coming back to the arena. I wouldn't be surprised to see another 15K fans back in the arena to watch "whatever the hell" is serve at premium price seats. LOL.
I understand yours and Doug’s frustration but you just have to realize they aren’t big enough or just plain good enough. 2nd unit guys did hustle but outside Ellis, couldn’t shoot good. Plain old whooping! Atlanta looked like the best team in the NBA. Anyway, they’ll play better but not going to win much. I thought 30 wins a few games ago but don’t think they’ll make that. Might be good they don’t! I’d do like I said before rotate 1st and 2nd groups and play the best in the 4th. Don’t worry about their status.
Because of salary rules and commitments, it is very tough to get rid of ineffective veterans . GET RID OF THE VETERANS ANY WAY YOU CAN. Play hungry young players and put an aggressive team on the court. Acquire as many draft picks as you can. Retool, rebuild, draft smart and go Thunder and Cavaliers.
Westbrook shouldn’t be playing. Kings need to see what they have in the young guards. They’re not winning anything this year anyway.
Gidder done! Christy let’em know it ain’t on me!
The kings fucking suck this year
Kings will always suck with Vivek!
What you see in the pre season what we fans going get to see regular season!!!

Love Doug, This is a flawed roster and defense is more than just want to. You need guys that are actually good at defense, and all the vets on this team are good with the ball in their hand. Unfortunately there's only one ball. You need guys that are actually good on the defensive end…
