Paul Skenes and the 7 other pitchers to win Rookie of the Year and Cy Young Award in their careers!
A lot of excitement for Pirate fans, not just Pirate fans, excitement for baseball fans across the country. You know all about him. The number one overall pick in the country just last year out of LSU. He’s getting ready to warm up today and get ready to throw out that first pitch. That’s unbelievable. It is absolutely incredible. Here it is. Swing and a foul tip. He’s struck him out. Getting more comfortable. Well, you’ll find out he’s not just a fast ball pitcher. That was the spinker first pitch. Second pitch 01 slider finishes him with another slider. And boy, not only 101, it freezes him. And and there’s some late tail to that at 101. And that was like a bullet coming out of his hand. Get the late tail. So that’s number four. Second time he’s gotten Suzuki. That’s five. Boy, that’s just nasty. That’s a back door curveball. And after seeing a pitch, you know, 99 100 miles per hour, he has struck out seven. Derek Shelton going to remove skins and we’ll just listen to the reaction as he heads to the dugout and they’re already starting to stand before he even gives up the baseball. Skins has never faced the fighting Phillies and none of these guys have ever seen him. His numbers this year very good. He just blew that right by him. skins and and even this uh this youngster we’re facing, Abel, uh they have the kind of arms that they can still live in that strike zone occasionally and get swings and misses. Just dispatches Kepler. Three strikeouts for Sko perfect innings with some size to it. And now here today he’s striking out Alec Bone. Fourth strikeout already for Sk. And Ski strikes out Bryson Stodd. So many pitchers that do different things, different speeds. He’ll have another Kernball with a strike out and he strikes about back to the change up. Beautiful. Seven strikeouts speed and that movement. Eight strikeouts now for Sk. And now he has tied the most swings and misses of a game and nine strikeouts ties a season high for him. And there is the rookie right-hander Jacob Deg Grom. Two two to Tara. Got him with a high fast. First big league strike out for Jacob Deg Grom. Not running. And Soraniano down on strikes. Six for 11 in this series with two home runs. Another change up. Degro gets the comebacker. Tahada with the turn. 163 double play. And he lines one to center field. And the Mets finally have a hit by their pitchers. Jacob Deg Grom snaps the 0 for 64 streak. Pitchers can do nothing but smile. Anthony Recker making sure they get the ball from Deg Gro’s first hit. Tough guy to double up here. Strike three call. And Salante takes strike three call. Was the beginning of the season. There was a point and Johnson goes down here for the strike out by Deg Grom. There’s a point where for as long as they let him two on the outside corner got him looking at the fast ball line one hopper Murph’s got it side retired six scoreless innings for Jacob Deg Gro hits that they take away that’s lined right in Murphy to end the inning they put players in unfamiliar positions and makes it that much more difficult to do what they normally do naturally Deg Grom gives up one. That’s in there. Strike three called. Got looking at the slider. And Deg Grom has his first strike out of the night. So, he’s only faced a few of these guys before. And he strikes out Lamb with a fast ball to finish off an impressive first inning. Look at his eye. He’s searching. And he takes the fast ball for strength three called. Three straight strikeouts for Deg Grom as Goldmid’s woes continue. and he got him with the off speed pitch to retire the side. Took over first place early in the NL West and they’ve held it. And there’s a good off speed pitch to get Souza and he gets him upstairs again. Three strikeouts in a row for Deg Grom. And that is now six for the night. There you go. But he strikes out again. This time on the breaking ball and Deg Grom strikes out the side in the fourth inning. And he struck him out. Came inside for his eighth strike out of the night. Did he ever come inside? And he struck him out. Foul tipped the fast ball for the ninth strike out of the night for Deg Grom. One, two coming. Struck him out. Third double-digit strikeout game of the year for Jacob Deg Grom. Three and two to Peralta. And he got him looking, but it shouldn’t have, right? Goldmith strikes out for the third time. That’s an even dozen for Deg Grom. 02 struck him out. 13 for Deg Grom. Tying his careerh high. Fast ball his last time up. And he gets a fast ball and pops it up. Cabrera calling side retired. Seven terrific innings tonight. And he strikes out Granderson to start his night. Little fast ball by him at 97. He’s pretty good with just those two pitches. Yeah, pretty good. And Walker goes down on the breaking ball to retire the side. So Deg Grom with a couple of strikeouts in a one, two, three first inning. No score after one. And he goes upstairs to get Riddle for the second out. That’s three strikeouts through the first five batters for Jake. To emphasize that, Carrera goes down swing at the back foot slider is not throwing the pitch and then the hitter can eliminate certain pitches. It gets much much easier for them as he makes quick work of Richards. Two- two coming. Struck him out. Deg Grom strikes out the side in the third inning and Riddle goes down swinging at the fast ball to end the inning. Two two to Wallak and he gets it with a nasty slider. 95. I don’t think we’ve ever seen a 95 mph slider from the Grom before, but he has his eighth strike out of the night. 02 to Richards and he got him looking. Strike three called. Side retired. Nine strikeouts for Deg Grom. He is in full command over the first five innings. Nine strikeouts, two hits and five scoreless. And a half swing and Anderson goes around. Strike three. One, two. Struck him out. 97 mph heat from Deg Grom. 11 strikeouts in six innings. Don’t think that as Riddle strikes out for the third time this time on a change up. That’s a dozen. Two two coming to Brinsson. Struck him out. Got him with a change up. That’s 13. A Baker’s dozen for Deg Grom. Matching his careerhigh. Hoping that that was number 14. Now it’s three and two to Wallock. Struck him out. Got him with a change up. careerhigh 14 strikeouts for Jacob Deg Grom, the master at the top of his craft. Our first look at this talented young right-hander Justin Verlander for the Tigers. And the 2-2 goes to a high school pitcher. This guy is a certainly a great exhibit battling officer. Popped him up. right field for Ordonz. And there you go. Eight to nothing. Verlander, the complete game shut out. Well, what Verlander needs to do today is limit the damage early. Two starts ago against Seattle, he gave up a three spot in the first inning. His last start against the Yankees, a two spot in the first inning. Uh he’s way too good for that. And one of the things that they want him to do today is throttle back a little bit on the gas. On the ground with a short stop. Easy hop there for Peraltto. Here’s the two- two offering. Swinging and a miss and Blander has his first strike out of the day. He drives one to left field out of line and that’ll chase Raburn over to his left in a one, two, three inning. Bouncing ball right side. Size more a couple of steps to his right. Lind is out of there. One gone. He rolls that one to third base. Brandon across the diamond. Two gone and he rolls one to third base. Right there is in one more time. So the aces are matching each other. Six up, six down against Verlander and Romero. And the 1-1 high popup shallow center field Jackson coming on. some of these guys uh like him for instance got him looking and the two-2 popped him up third base sign Brandon in Raja can’t make no money up there 123 inning again the last pitch was a slider by Verlander at 87 mph but Comcast is telling us that he’s already touched 98 in this ball game chopper to the short stop charging Peralta Little pop up to the shortstop. Peralta handles that one. Two gone and he got him looking. Ground ball right side. Jammed it and Cabrera takes it himself. That is popped up. Foul ground at first base. Cabrera. Two outs. The one open right back to Verlander who knocks it down. His throw got him at first base. Great play. Oh, what a play by Verlander and Cabrera popped him up. The shorts stop Peralta. One gone by Verling. Little chopper hit slowly right in front of the plate. Aila handles it early in the game. You take his foot off the gas so to speak as far as the fast ball early. Line drive caught on a leak by Miguel Cabrera and a one hopper hit to Peralta on a backhand. Johnny with a nice play. Little popup third base side foul ground. Hing makes the play. Here it is. Bouncing ball right back to the mound. Verlander makes the play. 21 in a row. Retired. And the first pitch is lined to center field. Jackson is there. One gone. Hit it hard but right at him. and he walked in. The first base runner of the day for the Toronto Blue Jays is a one out walk here in the eighth and the 1-1 pitch. Ground ball to short. Peralta has it. Fires to second one. Relay got him a double play. 643 inning is over. Verlander has faced the minimum through eight. Let’s go to the ninth. David Cooper the first man to face him here in the ninth inning. And he popped him up the infield. Seismore taking charge. One pitch, one out. The one-1 pitch. Ground ball towards second base. Seismore. Two gone. Here’s the two- two pitch on the way. Solis, he struck him out. Ver has done it again. The second no hitter in his young career. He has done it again. They may have run the Kentucky Derby today, but the Tiger horse was number one. Doing a great job racking up strikeouts. Currently sitting at 243 on the season. There’s a swing and a miss as he gets Bo Bashette on the slider to start this game. Does get a called third strike. Swinging a miss. Verlander now with three strikeouts and he gets a foul tip strikeout as Griettic goes down. That’s now four of the first five outs for Verer. He’s maybe trying to catch up to his teammate Eric Colola at 14 strikeouts in his last start. Swinging a miss. Verlander gets Bette for the second time today. And that is a called third strike. Justin Berlander picks up yet another strikeout. He has seven as he gets Justin smoke. That’s 250 strikeouts on the season. The fifth timeer has recorded 250 strikeouts. Swing and a miss. Three pitch strikeout getting TZ to chase the fast ball up. Drury goes down swinging. Ground ball right side to his left Altuve. He’s got it. You only have one base runner and don’t have a hit through six. Strike three called. He struck out Smoke twice today. Smoke sends one high in the air deep to center field but playable. Jake Morrison is there and he puts it away. Hey, Justin Merlander and the Astros through seven. Wow. Bottom of the zone strikeout. Murlander has passed his teammate Garrett Cole. Now the most strikeouts in the major leagues. And a foul tip caught by Torino. Strikeout number 12. Called. Third strike. 23 in a row set down since a one out walk in the first inning. Justin Berlander cruising along. And we are through eight. There’s that power slider. He got him. Reese Maguire goes down. 14 strikeouts for Justin Burlander. Ground ball to third. Toro is there. His throw in time. Justin Berlander. Another exclamation point in a Hall of Fame career. His third career no hitter. one of six in the history of the game with three or more and his second here at the Rogers Center. Justin Berlander on the mound probably a little anxious to face the Seattle Mariner team again. Last time out against these Mariners gave up four home runs in Seattle. Overall on the season didn’t really have much of an impact. Still a great RA at 2.23 and that whip amazingly consistently under one 61 strikeouts on the season. Tai France. A swing and a miss as Justin Burlander picks up a strikeout against the best hitter for the Mariners this year, Tai France. Show you that slider breaking down and away in a beautiful location against Tai France to get that first strike out of the game for Here’s the one-two pitch and it’s swing and a miss. Tal swings over the top of another breaking ball. A good long slider to the back foot and there’s one away with Verlander’s second strikeout. Here’s the O2 Curve. Got him. Strike three. Really pulled the string on that breaking ball. Winker goes down on strikes. Three punch outs. There is a better one as he gets the swing and miss. Julio Rodriguez goes down on strikes. That is now four strikeouts for Verlander. Three of the four strikeouts have been on that slider and he’s actually throwing extremely good ones. Very consistent in that outside corner. Swing and a miss. Perlander slaps the glove on that strikeout. He ties Matt Scherzer on the all-time strikeout list with number 3,079. Good call. Third strike. Justin Burlander with six strikeouts tonight. Now 380 in his career. Number 18 all time in MLB history. Strike three called at the knees. Rodriguez goes down looking. Strikeout number seven for Verlander. Swing and a miss. Verlander gets AU Heno Suarez on strike. Eight strikeouts today for Verlander. And one away here in the sixth inning. He is creeping up on the list now just two behind John Smoltz for number 17 all time. And he’s got a few other guys in his sights in the next couple of weeks. Swinging him in. Scott Toro big strikeout there for out number two. Erlander up to nine strikeouts now on the night. That’s a new season high. Turbo slider in. Gets that swing and miss. They have struck out 241 times against them. Foul tip caught by Castro. Strikeout number 10. Murlander pumped up. He’s now tied with John Smoltz. Number 17 all time on the strikeout list. Swing and a miss up top with 96. The fast ball beats Cal Raleigh for strikeout number 11. JV getting back to the swing and miss ways. Called third strike. He gave him that one on the outside edge. And Justin Burlander strikes out 12 and walks off to a standing ovation for the Minuteade Park crowd. No teenager has ever led the league in strikeouts while striking out over 200 batters until this year. You predict that. There it is. He has just tied the all-time record for strikeouts by a rookie pitcher with his 245th strikeout. Tying Herb score, who did that back in 1955 for the Cleveland Indians, got him with a curveball. A standing ovation for Dwight Gooden. And Dwight now with a chance to make history of his own. His next strike out of course gives him the record all by himself. Two balls, two strikes, the record. Dwight Gooden has set a new major league record for strikeouts by a rookie pitcher. and he is the first pitcher 19 years of age to have a chance to be the strikeout leader. Congratulations all around as the game has been stopped. Dwight Gooden with his 11 strikeout now has 246 strikeouts and a fly ball to center field on a high breaking ball. Strawberry and Wilson converge and Daryl puts it away and Dwight Gooden has picked up win number 16 with his third shut out of the year and his sixth complete game effort. He strikes out 16 and in the process becomes the record holder among rookie pitchers in the history of baseball. Here we go again. Fast ball line to Bman and the Mets win it. Tommy Herrer hit it right on the nose, but Dwight Gooden survives a ninth inning scare with the bases loaded. And the New York Mets win it 5-2 to pull to within one game of the Cardinals with tomorrow night’s series finale yet to come. Gooden wins it to go 24 and four on the year. And who often hits to right should be able to cope with Valenuel possibly. Not if he makes a good pitch though. Perfect for Valenuela. One gone here in the third inning. Oh, screw ball. See you later. Third strike out for Valenuel and they’re two out here in the third inning. And he looks hot tonight. I’ll tell you. He is on his game. He struck him out. So it’s a third strike out. They struck him out. That’s a fourth strikeout. He’s retired 12 men in a row. Popped up. Los Angeles may have lost Leonard, but did keep Rick Sutcliffe, another leading rookie candidate. 12 wins, nine losses. The Dodgers winning his pitcher. And then gave way to Rick Sutcliffe, who shut out the Reds over the last three. The Dodgers took game two of the series 7 to four. Rick Sutcliffe brightened the Cub pitching scene. Recently acquired from Cleveland, Sutcliffe struck out 14 Cardinals in a five hit shutout. The most strikeouts by a Cub pitcher since Ferguson Jenkins sat down 14 Phillies in 1971. The victory gave Sutcliffe his second win without a loss in his Chicago uniform. And now the National League leads two to one. The Mets 22-year-old rookie is manager Alston’s choice to protect the slim lead. The young Red Sox star smashes the ball to left field, but it’s no trouble for Hank Aaron as he moves over to grab it easily for the first out in the 15th inning. Tom Siver pitches to freehand and the Detroit catcher lifts a high fly to center that Willie Mays drifts under for an easy out. The National League is only one out away from victory. Here it comes and Barry swings and misses for strike three. Macccarver rushes to congratulate Siver. Then comes Safeda. Manager Alustin and the rest of the National Leager for Tom Siver the Mets young pitcher. It was a sensational wrap-up job. The two to1 victory was the longest all-star game ever played and the fifth straight win for the National League. Warming up in the Mets bullpen number 41 Tom Sabre. This will be a two two- two pitch to Powell and it’s in there for strike three. He’s struggle right by him. An overpowering inning for Tom Siver. Sever’s getting tougher and tougher as this game goes along. Two-2 delivery. Strike three. And Siver is going to challenge Bal Gibson’s record tonight. Maybe he struck out the side in the fifth. fast ball struck him out. 10 strikeouts for Tom Siver. The third time tonight he has struck out Reggie Jackson. Siver has struck out 11 and walked one. Check him out. Strike out number 12 for Tom Siver. Siver sets up now. Check back over his shoulder. Here’s the patriot. An ovation for Siver who has struck out 200 batters. Rudy turns and tosses the ball over to the dugout. that’ll be placed among sever souvenirs. He is the only pitcher in the history of Major League Baseball to strike out 200 or more batters in eight successive seasons. He’s getting a standing ovation at Shay. Tom Siver, the only pitcher in all the long history of Major League Baseball to strike out 200 or more batters in eight successive seasons.
