Minnesota Vikings Q&A: Weapons? Brian O’Neill? Will KOC…?
[Music] What’s going on to Rome? Beautiful day for some Q&A. Let’s fire it up Tyler Richards. Other teams would kill for our weapons and yet those teams still find ways to win. And why can’t Kevin Okonnell figure it out in the years he’s been here and you know you you look at the Vikings offensive weapons. So you have the Sons of Anarchy. You have Justin Franco Jefferson who’s the best wide receiver in the game. You have Addison who’s one of the best wide receiver twos in the game. You have Speedy Naylor, probably the best wide receiver three in the game. And then Hawinson is up there, just hasn’t been unleashed this year, right? So, so many weapons. The offensive line is there. You know, McCarthy’s got a gun to freaking sling it all over the place. Accuracy kind of comes and goes, but yeah, this what’s mainly frustrating is that so much talent on both sides of the ball, specifically offense. And how come they’re not consistently putting up 40 points a game? Yeah. Uh, next, uh, OTL Chad. Time to talk about Brian O’Neal. Well, feel like Brian O’Neal. So, he’s fighting through through that knee injury and and early on it was just a lot of miscommunications up front. He was getting used to playing with Fry, but overall, Brian O’Neil is still one of the more underrated right tackles in the game, especially, you know, the way he got after things in the run game. Just complete road grader. Uh, him and Fry on that right side against Detroit. It’s good, good, good to see. But, uh, O’Neal, so O’Neal’s probably going to have to be extended this off season because his cap number in 2026 is untenable. And I I I still have confidence in Brian O’Neal. I I think that he’s clearly still one of the best right tackles in the game and go from there. Uh, Dr. Cucumber Gizmo and Gizmo. Uh, sounds vaguely sexual. Yeah. How do we stop turning the ball over? We can’t win a game with two interceptions and a fumble. So, the Vikings constantly losing the turnover battle. The defense is not taking it away at the same rate as it were last year. Now, there’s certainly some puck luck there, but in terms of just taking care of the rock, I mean, you’re going to have a couple picks with McCarthy as a young quarterback, that’s fine. But just turfing the football in opportune times, can’t have it, right? And that’s also been an issue like going back to 2023. I mean, the the Vikings were just getting blown out in terms of uh the turnover battle week after week, and you can’t win. You got to play better than the ref’s ref. You got to play better than the turnovers than turnover battle, right? So, I I don’t know. You you shave it all the way down to just the, you know, the player position coaches emphasizing ball security. And I don’t know, and also def. Let let’s get some more takeaways. Man, it’s frustrating. Uh Sam Sam Ari, do you think Kevin McConnell uh calling play calling at home is more detrimental to the team since he wanted to sling up more than the running as say I’m going to show off my quarterback one who still needs reps to get in the groove by forcing him just to chuck the ball creates more stress on the team. Uh then specifically given how the running game was solid against the Ravens. I I don’t think it’s necessarily that. All right. And also it it kind of stinks too because I mean the Vikings have seen JJ McCarthy at home twice and you know the first time was a disaster. Second time was all right. Uh but it isn’t so much showing off. It’s more just getting away from the run game when it’s clearly working, right? And also part of the the Bears comeback win was the Vikings run the damn ball, right? And MacArthur would start slinging it, right? And Okonnell did give the excuse of, “Well, we had a lot of false starts. Those first 15, that’s tough to run the ball in those situations.” Okay. But when you got Mason and Jones like ripping off 6, seven, 8, nine, 10 yards a carry, tough to get away from, man. And I I know Jay McCarthy is your guy, but right now, this stage of his career, in a close game, he shouldn’t be throwing it 42 times, man. Yeah. Uh lastly, uh Dan’s uh will the state of Minnesota ever see a competent NFL coach in purple? I mean, we we saw one in Bud Grant, right? Uh Jerry Burns is all right. Uh Dennis Green is super underrated. Actually thought Mike Tyson was not bad, just bad ownership at the time with uh Red Mcomes. And also, I mean, Ty was a players coach to his detriment. Those guys got away with a lot. Loveboat and whatnot, but I still believe Kevin McConnell is the guy. But we have to see some progression because you know the same knocks against Kevin McConnell game management not running the ball, getting players to show up like these are the same criticisms we had in 2022, 2023, right? So we have to see some progression there. And he he’s such a smooth talker, man. like he would make a great politician where he says so much but then you realize wait a minute he didn’t tell us anything right but the whole quarterback whisper thing yes feels like him and JJ longterm is going to be perfect for this team going to bring a dozen drow bars in the next 10 years but yeah at a certain point we need to see more from Kevin McConnell more is required from the NFL coach of the year which might be a cursed award because some of the most recent coaches of the year like Stfansky day ball whatever so Maybe we don’t want that. I don’t know. But I I I trust that they’ll fix things because I mean the Vikings are are all in on them with McCarthy with Okonnell extended. Quy extended. Like they’re going to be here, right?
