Juan Soto finishes third in National League MVP voting

  1. Joke that he didn’t finish 2nd. Overall numbers better than Schwarber, higher WAR, not a DH, not playing in a little league park, almost had a 40/40.

  2. And the only team with three players finishing in the top 11(for narrative purposes) in the MVP race.

  3. He had a great year. Watching him play the outfield was like watching your old dog realize he can’t get up on the couch anymore. Unfortunately for the NL Othani exists and even if he has a down year with the bat he’s always going to give you over 100ip and a sub 4 ERA along with his 40+ homers a year.

  4. I mean should have been second. This would have been a last place team without Soto.

  5. Very deserved. Most talented hitter to put on a Mets uniform and it’s not particularly close.

  6. Maybe a hot take, but I don’t think so. Ohtani should only be judged on his bat for the MVP. What’s his ERA gotta be to not win the MVP? If it’s 4.25 does he still win? Can he win if it was 5.00? Or will they just dismiss that?

They need some firmer rules on this thing.

  7. Ohtani was the clear MVP but Soto was definitely better than Schwarber. Schwarber is a DH who had a lower wRC+ than Soto, who at least played the field (though not well), and who led the NL in stolen bases. Soto finished with 1.0 more fWAR than Schwarber too.

  8. He should have finished ahead of Schwarber, but it doesn’t really matter. If you aren’t first, it is mostly forgotten where you finished and anything in top 2-5 is basically the same.

  9. Ngl im kinda annoyed that Lindor got more votes than Pete. Would anyone here contend that Lindor was more valuable than Pete this year? I understand he’s a much better defender, but he actually regressed significantly compared to his career baseline, whereas Pete was what he usually is defensively. On the other hand, yea Lindor had a fine final line offensively but Pete had an exceptional one, but Pete was our most clutch hitter and much more consistent. I know stats don’t really care for clutchness or consistency but I think they matter, and if you consider them Pete was almost as valuable as Soto, not slightly less valuable than Lindor.
