Buffalo Sabres find a way to make the fans mad despite missing a ton of bodies against Utah

Sneaky Joe Debbiosi here between games, lost to Utah last night in Colorado tonight. Get into the Colorado game, back half of today’s show. I want to get into a lot more today on recapping what we saw last night in Utah. Also, Michael Castle Ring, I think, said some dumb things about the team. He’s seven games in. He hasn’t recorded a point yet, but he’s already said something that has some fans being angry. So, lot to get to on today’s show. Was trying not to set myself up for being upset during this road trip. Kind of had talked about how all the players being out that they have and they’re playing some good teams. And at the same time, I did say yesterday was a must-win on some level because I do not believe the Sabres are going to beat the Colorado Avalanche who are the number one team in the National Hockey League after playing the night before and being on the road with a team that’s missing a ton of players. Uh but here we are. They lost last night and God help them against the Avalanche. We’ll get into the insane odds of this game. and the Avalanche are as big of a favorite as you ever see in the NHL for tonight’s game. But before we do any of that, last night’s game, watched it back early early this morning before the morning show on WGR550. Recorded it, woke up 4:00 a.m. Let me put it on, get the walking treadmill going, and um let me watch the rest. Let me watch this game. I watched the first period yesterday and then I watched the second and third this morning and I was like, “All right, there’s good start to my day. They’re up. They’re winning.” I knew they were up one- nothing. Um, so I forward to where I left off early in the second period. And then an amazing goal, like super skilled goal, Isak Rosanne, his second of the night. Loving what he’s doing in the last couple of games. He’s been playing in the top six, which I think helps him do that. Noah Osen finding him on the pass. I thought he had a very strong effort. And they’re up two nothing. And I’m thinking, well, they’re not really playing all that well, but because really they were getting outshot at that point. Um, they were doing pretty well, I think, in terms of like shot attempts and scoring chances, but they were getting outshot, but it didn’t feel like a game they were really going to hold to that level. I thought at some point Utah was going to come on strong. Then after that goal, an amazing shift that almost made it three to nothing. And you really got to wonder what goes differently if it ends up being three to nothing because after Roseanne scores at 642 mark of the second period. Out comes the fourth line who I think’s been pretty good since they’ve been put together. Krebs centering Josh Dunn and Beck Malenstein. They come out and they are all over Utah with the forche and they for they’re forcing turnovers. They’re keeping the puck in the zone and finally they muscle the puck to the net and there’s a scramble. There’s chaos. Vega Utah goalender is on the ice scrambling himself. All the Utah players are looking down and after Dund almost scored, in comes Michael Kessler who gets an open backhand because the puck had just squirted free and he kind of shot it back into the goalender and he’s not able to put the puck away. It’s a tough one. He’s on his backhand. There’s a lot of traffic right in front of him. I mean, of the 10 players on the ice, I think seven of them were in the crease. Everybody was packed in there. But had that goal gone in, really tough to come back from three to nothing. After that shift, you see the Utah coaching staff during the TV timeout lighting into their guys like this is unacceptable. You’re getting your butts kicked by Buffalo with half their players and you got to pick it up. And from that moment on, Utah picked it up. and they score five unanswered goals including four in the third period. So it was only 2 minutes after Kessler and Dunn had almost made it three to nothing that Michael Sarone comes in and he beats the Buffalo defense gets in behind them and he causes Colton Ellis to scramble. And I felt really bad for Ellis on this play because he shouldn’t have been asked to make the original save. It was kind of an easy get. It was a mistake by the Sabres defenseman. They were too high up on the boards. Little elementary mistake. They left way too much room in behind them. So now Ellis has got to kind of slide across. The puck squirts out to Nick Dimone who is a by the way Amherst native. Um I used to use his brother’s hockey sticks when they would sell them actually locally cuz they would always come back from um wherever they were playing and they would sell all their all their good sticks and get new ones um their old sticks and I would pick up the old the old sticks. That was kind of cool that I saw was seeing him play last night. He’s played in the NHL before uh 60 games in a couple of years, but last night was uh his first goal of the year. I know that. So, he blasts out from the point. It squirted out to him. Ellis was kind of thrown off cuz he had just made the previous save. He was a little overextended, I think, on the left and then he lets in the slap shot. Before that goal, he had been awesome, dynamite. And even going into the third thought he was performing really well. I was feeling really good about Colton Ellis. Like he had made the one incredible save sliding across from the right to the left. He was awesome. And then in the third period, I don’t want to make all the excuses for him because I do not think every goal was impossible for him to stop. I think he could have stopped JJ Purka on the first goal for Utah in the third period. I think he probably could have start stopped Lawson Krauss who beat him up top on the on the side angle and that might be the one that you would actually blame on Ellis the most. Schmaltz, that’s a tough one. I mean, that’s a that’s a great offensive player that’s got a wideopen wrist shot right in front of you. That’s a bad job by the defenders. And then there’s an empty netter. So, the four goals he allowed, you know, I don’t really love the Krauss goal. The others, I guess, were kind of acceptable. It ends up looking like a bad game for him and you got to call it what it is. I mean, it’s not a good game. You can’t allow four no matter where the goals come. It was a great first two periods, but they could have used him to steal a game for them in the third period and he was not able to do it. I do not think he got much help in front of him, though. The Sabres were abysmal in the third period. And this is why I’m going to go against what I had said going into the game that I don’t want to get too upset, too worked up on their results when they’re missing. so many players. Here’s why I’m changing that after last night. Because we got a game where the guys that were in the lineup filling in for the injured players were the ones who showed up and played the best. I think honestly the Sabres best three players last night to my eyes were Isach Rosanne, Noah Osland, and Josh Dunn. three players that started the year in Rochester and are all only here because of injuries. Don might not have started in Rochester. I don’t remember. He might have been a guy that they needed to wave. But they were your best three players last night in my opinion. I think most would at least agree on Roseanne and Oel. I’m not sure how the numbers actually look on Dunn for last night, but I liked a lot of his shifts. Um, when your three best guys and those three especially, but Roseanne and Austin because they’re playing in bigger roles. They’re playing in the top six. They’re playing on the power play. They’re being asked to be secondary goal scorers on this team. Um when that happens that you get those guys to show up and give you what the guys that aren’t in the lineup would be giving you. Like Roseanne gave you what Jason Zucker would last night if not more. Oscelin gave you what Josh Norris, Zack Benson would give you last night. I thought he was great. They had the puck the whole night. They were They scored goals. They were pretty good on at the end of at the power play. Like they gave you what the guys they’re replacing would give you. So now it’s left up to your best players because you’re getting the help that you supposedly weren’t going to be getting. You got it. And what did we get from the Sabres top line last night? Ryan Mloud, Alex Tuck, and Taage Thompson who are supposed to be the one solid line that you know you can get a prod a a game from night in and night out. You have two guys that consistently are putting up 70 or more points and you have a guy that was a 20 goal scorer last year. a lot of players that are veterans that have a lot of games played in the league between the three of them and they got outplayed by the two pipsqueak kids that are 150 lbs soaking wet on the second line. They were the best offensive players on the night for Buffalo. That can’t happen. Zero shots as a line between Mloud, Thompson, Tuck. Didn’t even get a puck on net, let alone one in the back of the net. unacceptable from those three. You cannot have performances like that from those three players when you are where you are in the standings and at the same time you are getting the help that you usually do not get. Now that was at least in the first two periods. Third period everybody stunk pretty much. Maybe Rosan and Austin weren’t terrible but most of the team was bad. They were letting chances come in from everywhere in the middle of the ice. uh back doors, shots from the point, and then rebounds out in front. Like, man, they just could not do anything in the third period. And the third period, it’s not like they were up in the third and playing prevent defense, which sometimes can happen in the NHL. It was 3 to2 Utah. 3 minutes and 22 seconds into the third. You had 1638 to go and you were down one. And guess how many shots they had in the third period? Three. They never had the puck. They were gassed. They were checked out. Whatever you want to call it, they were no shows in the third period in a game in a period where you had the lead going into it with a with a third string goalender and Rochester guys on your second line and Bo Byum playing as your number one defenseman. you had the lead and then that was the period you put out there. Those are the easiest periods to play when you’re up like that. It’s just keep the puck out of your own net. It’s just limit the top chances. You don’t have to play an overly complicated game. Those are generally the easiest games to play and that they’ve actually done well I think playing that type of style this year and they just couldn’t do it ter it’s a bad loss. It’s a bad loss especially with this game against Colorado on the horizon. So, not feeling good at all about last night’s game. Um, they get outshot 37 to 19 at the end of it. And again, um 57-4, last place in the Eastern Conference. When we come back, Michael Kessler had a thing to say while talking to Utah media that caught the eye of some Sabre fans on social media. I want to go through why I think he shouldn’t have said it and why I also think it’s not fully as bad as I don’t even know maybe it is pretty bad. We’ll we’ll let you decide when we come back. Sneaky Joe Debiosi here on the Locked On Sabres podcast. A little heated on uh this Thursday afternoon on another game day where I think the Sabres could get wrecked tonight by the best team in the NHL, but we’ll get to that in the next segment before we get back into what’s going on on the ice. off the ice. Michael Kessler, the big addition of the off seasonason after JJ Purka scored a goal and got an assist last night. And by the way, I think he said in postgame like, “Oh, I guess cuz I do nothing.” He took a shot at Rob Ray because Rob Ray said that all JJ Purka does is he does nothing and then he finds us in a shooting lane and he shoots the puck. Like that’s that’s what happened on his goal. And I I maybe Rob saying at his bad a bad look. I don’t care. It is kind of what Purka was doing in that game. He kind of was invisible until the third when he got the puck in a scoring area and he scored a goal. And that’s why goal scorers are valuable in the NHL because in one single play, they gave you the value that you’re looking for for them being in the lineup. whilst guys that aren’t elite goal scorers or great goal scorers have to play a perfect game from beginning to end to provide their value to you. But anyways, that’s a conversation for a different day. Castle Ring, who’s in that trade, has played only seven games, has not recorded a point yet with the Buffalo Sabres, and their record when he’s in there, I think they’ve won only one game, one game in the seven that he has seen. He said yesterday while speaking with the Utah media that it’s a big difference between Utah and Buffalo, one being a hockey market and one not being a hockey market. And to be fair, it’s kind of true, but Castle Ring said, quote, “We had such a good fan base here.” Speaking of Utah, it was so nice just seeing all the positive things all the time. you see the other side of it now in a hockey market they’re pretty critical and when I first saw that my immediate reaction was all right well he’s not lying but you can’t you can’t say that you cannot say that oh they’re pretty critical you can’t when you’re in that position you’re on this team you just can’t take you can’t say anything that could be misconstrued rude as a shot at the fans because within that quote and there is no context added to it on the original tweet from Lance Lysowski and then the article from Broen Houston like they don’t really expand on it much but there isn’t what should be attached in here which is I understand why they’re critical and that is why Castle Ring might not get the benefit of the doubt is maybe not 100% his fault but the Sabres deserve all of the blame because whether it’s Kevin Adams who often speaks this way or whether it was Kyle Aoso when he led a revolt against the fans who had been booing the team who had been terrible. They stopped saluting the fans at the end of games when they won. The captain did that a couple of years ago. The guy who was referred to as dad on the team that brought all these guys up, he did that. Adams consistently palm trees comment and many others the organization and the players and the GMs can’t think of a sing singular coaching point for this Lindy would never do anything like this I don’t think Granado ever did but players GMs front office the organization has constantly made it sound like to fans that the team doesn’t think that fans are in the right to boo or to be mad or to be critical or to be upset that it’s hey get off our backs. What’s your problem? That’s always felt like the attitude from a lot I remember Alex Tuck went on a podcast a couple of years ago and talked about how harsh the fans are and how it can, you know, drive it it can drive um them to be upset about it. I remember Robin Leonard talking about a dark cloud in the arena. Now, he might have been dealing with some other demons that weren’t just the fans, obviously, off the ice stuff, but this attitude of, “Oh, what are you why are you guys so mean to us? W why why are you so mean to us? Why are you so critical?” When there is never an understanding from the organization or the team that, hey, we get it. We get it that you are going through something as a hockey fan base that no other fan base has ever gone through before. No other hockey fans have ever been asked to go through 14 playoffless years. It’s never happened. There is never that attitude of we get it. We understand it. You are right to be mad and to be upset. We’re not winning. You don’t get booed when you’re winning. It’s when you play like dog. You know what? So, that’s not all what Kessle Ring is saying. I know, but it’s just another paper in the file of ah the Sabres don’t really think fans have the right to be that mad about what’s happening here. It’s again there was though, and this is where I want to add some context on the the back end here because Matthew Fairburn was right to point this out. Kesslearing was on the what’s what chaos podcast a little bit earlier this week or actually last week and he did say that it’s fun playing in a hockey town. Said that Arizona wasn’t a hockey town and in Utah people were were trying to figure out how to be a hockey town and here people just just are hockey people. It’s been really fun. So this is where I don’t want to go too hard in on Castle Ring. It’s you could more much more anger attached from my end still, you know, even after the fact too. Some of the things that Adams have said in the past and what Poso did a couple of years ago. There are other examples of this. I know. Um Michael maybe made some comments about booing once in a while when he was on the team. I don’t want to go too far in on Kesslearing because he doesn’t say I hate it this way. He doesn’t say you’re not in the right. you’re wrong to be mad at us, to be critical about us. He does say it’s been really fun to be in a town where it’s just hockey people. And when you add that context in, it’s not as bad of a comment, but Saber fans were mad when they first saw the original one. And um, you know, again, everyone’s on edge. They’re in last place again. The GM is still here in his sixth season. Everyone’s on edge. All right. When we come back, how bad’s it going to be against Colorado? We’ll uh figure that out when we come back. Stinky Jody Biosi. This episode presented Locked on Savers by FanDuel. Wait until I tell you what the odds are for tonight’s game between Buffalo and Colorado. That’s coming up a little little bit. But hockey is here. And the Avalanche are a great hockey team. They are my favorite team to watch over the last five years in the league because of McKinnon and Mar. The Avalanche in 17 games this year. Have lost in regulation once. One time they are 11, one, and five. Kind of a weird record. I think they actually have the most would be actually be tied with Savers. No, they have more than the Sabres. The most overtime losses in the league this year. It’s kind of crazy, right? Like Macar and McKinnon and they’re losing in overtime all the time. What is that about? Because they’ve only won uh I believe it’s one game in overtime. So, one and five with all that speed and skill. This is not a game that many expect to get to overtime though. So, I don’t even know why I’m talking about it. The Avalanche are minus 400. I almost can’t even say it. It is so rare that you see a National Hockey League team be favored by that much. And I get why it’s the case there. I mean, everything that goes into it. The Avalanche um did not play last night. They played on Tuesday against Anaheim and they were at home. So, they’ve already been home for a few days. Their last road game was on Sunday in Vancouver. They are an elite team. They’re playing a team that played last night and is missing so many players in their lineup. And some of the guys that are in the lineup aren’t playing that well anyway. So, minus400 for tonight’s game. The Sabres are plus 300 and then over under 6 and a half, minus 115 on the over, minus 105 on the under. in terms of what we are going to see for lineups and what we are going to see for goalending. Um, one thing that I do want to say about the Avalanche is they are getting crazy good power power play production this year so far from Victor Olivesson. Oliv I know, right? Like every day you’re seeing a new an old saber that’s thriving. Last night, Sam Laughafer scored like a McDavid crazy goal, which is insane of all people. Olivesson this year, five goals and nine assists. That’s 14 points in 17 games. He had 15 points in 51 games in his last season with the Buffalo Sabres. So far this year, of his five goals, um, two of them are on the power play. Of his 14 assists, four are on the power play. So, six power play points is solid for him. He actually is producing a little bit at five on five. He’s played a little bit with Nathan McKinnon. Um more recently he’s been on a line with Jack Drury and Gabriel Landiskog. Landiskog’s back after missing multiple seasons. Um so Olison a name to watch 95 he’s wearing in Colorado. McKinnon no longer playing with Miko Rantin but he is number one in the league in points by a wide margin six. So far this year he’s playing like the best player in the world. He is the MVP front runner. I still believe he’s the second best player in the world to Conor McDavid. I think he’s been that for a long time. Right now, no more rantin, but Martin Niches on one wing, Arturi Lechinan on the other, and he’s carrying those two crazy good numbers uh this year and that should continue. So, the Avalanche, how are they going to stop McKinnon? Uh I think they’re probably not going to is the simplest answer. Here’s another crazy line for you in tonight’s game. McKinnon to record a point tonight is minus750. Some of these numbers are crazy. Minus750 to record a point. You’d have to bet $75 to win 10 for him to get a point. I mean, he’s definitely going to get a point. That’s why we kind of look at it. Um, all right. The other things that we need to know about tonight’s game are who’s going to be starting in goal and it’s expect it’s going to be Ukapa Lucan for the Buffalo Sabres. and it is going to be McKenzie Blackwood for the Colorado Avalanche. The Sabres saw Scott Wedgewood when they played Colorado earlier in the season. Um, for this game, Blackwood has only played two on the season. Wedgewood’s been the guy and has actually put up good numbers, which is wild, right? That dude was in Rochester not that long ago, but sometimes you get goalies that into their 30s start showing up as NHL guys. Wedgewood’s kind of done that. Mackenzie Blackwood though tonight for the ABS against the Sabres. He 875 save percentage um 10-1 in his two games. He allowed seven goals in his two games. So you’re you’re getting that. That’s even more incredible, isn’t it? If Wedgewood had been starting, what would Colorado be as a favorite? Minus 500 – 600. I mean, it might be it probably be more. Uh so Blackwood is who you’re getting tonight for the Avalanche. And I could go through all the numbers, but let me just put it this way. They’re elite lead in everything. There’s no number I could show you where they’re really not a top level team. So, let’s skip past that and I’ll give you my bet of the night for tonight. And uh last night was tough. I had under six and a half goals for Sabres and Mammoth. It was six I mean it was two to one going into the third period. Tough beat, but that happens, right? And it also happens that empty netters can get you killed because uh it was a six-goal game, 4 to2 late in the third. It looked like the Sabres were going to stop them from scoring an empty netter, but they did get it finally. So, we lost on an empty netter. So, we go to 76 and three on the year. We are plus 8.4 units. Starting to whittle away a little bit, but we built up a nice lead early in the season that uh we’re going to hit some coming up soon. We’re in a little bit of a slow streak, but I like what we got tonight. I’m going to give you a parlay for tonight. And this parlay is not going to be some crazy wild shot. like it’s barely above even money. I’m going Avalanche puck line. So, Avalanche minus a goal and a half to win by two or more, which I feel very strongly about. And I’m going to go Olson to record a point. No, no goal, no crazy power play bet or whatever. Just Olivesson to record a point. He’s on the number one power play unit. That number one power play unit’s lethal. Sabres are a good penalty kill. I know. Um he’s getting his opportunities at five on five. He is playing more minutes than he used to um in certain years when he was with the Buffalo Sabres. Um he’s playing actually about three minutes more per night than he was with Buffalo two years ago. So Olivesson to record a point and the Sabres to lose by two or more. That’s the bat of the night. And um I hope I’m wrong. If this fan base could use a total stunner tonight, well, let’s see. Shock the world and beat the Colorado. It would be the most stunning result of the of the NHL season so far this year if they were able to win it. Let’s see if they can. We’ll talk to you after Sabres and Avalanche. God help us all. Um, you want more hockey talk? Check out Lockdown NHL. Uh, Lockdown NHL game night. They’ve got you covered every game, every night until a Stanley Cup champion is crowned. You can find it wherever you listen to your podcast and on YouTube. We’ll talk to you tomorrow here on the Locked On Stabvers podcast, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day.
The Buffalo Sabres fans were largely being gentle with the team with so many players missing in action, but that changed after losing to the Utah Mammoth. As young guys like Noah Ostlund and Isak Rosen stepped up on the team’s second line, the team’s first line of Tage Thompson, Alex Tuch, and Ryan McLeod was no where to be found. Something that cannot happen when you’re getting guys to step up that aren’t typically in the lineup. After leading 2-0, and giving up five unanswered goals to JJ Peterka and the Mammoth, Sneaky Joe believes fans have every right to be upset.
Plus, Michael Kesselring made a pretty tough comment about how critical fans can be in Buffalo, and the Sabres are as big of an underdog as you ever see in their Thursday matchup with the Colorado Avalanche, the best team in the NHL.

I was there. it was a rough watch.

The embarrassing Butter Knives are going nowhere with the worst owner in major sports. Either blow this whole thing up and start rebuild number 4 or sell the team and move them to Zimbabwe
tell Tuck sign a contract or get out no more distractions no more BS he's he's good, but he's not good enough to become a distraction and drag this on
I'm ready for a teardown/rebuild. Thompson and Tuch are in their 'peak' years now, you aren't getting any better out of them. This team, any way/shape/form is not going deep in the playoffs, let along contending for a cup. If you just want a playoff appearance and a quick exit, maybe, MAYBE a coaching change and GM tinkering with the roster can get that for you. But if you ever want more than that, its time for a rebuild.
If anything, a rebuild will give the fans some hope. Maybe its false hope but its hope. We don't even have that now.
Sabres. The team you rest your starter against. You could probably rest your star players as well
Injuries are the excuse for Adams to keep his job, we would have been better off with no injuries and to keep losing to get him fired. Now they have all the reasons in the world to keep Adams and Pegula is fine with all this. It's not even comical anymore.
I know that a lot of people were writing Rosen off the last year or two for not making the Sabres roster. All after basically leading the Amerks in scoring the last few seasons.
I’ve been saying that the reason is because the Sabres haven’t given him a REAL chance to see if he’s ready for the NHL.
Like I’ve been saying, how can they claim that giving him 6-7 minutes as a real chance. Now that he’s playing closer to 29 minutes, he’s showing that he MAY be ready!
I’d say that 3 Goals and 4 Points in 5 Games is a good sign that he deservedly at least a much longer look.
Peterka must've been saying to himself all night last night thank God I'm not on that team anymore. I can't see how anybody would wanna play on this team. Thompson, Tuck, Dahlen must all want out of this team. It's only the middle of November and we're already talking about not making the playoffs again.
Sell sell sell… does the Hindenburg ring any bells?
If only Terry was as mad and valued winning as much as us. I don’t know if he’s waiting for the incompetent people in coaching and management to run out their contracts or if he’s digging his heels in with them thinking they are the solution. Unfortunately in regards to Adams I fear it’s the latter. It’s pathetic and demoralizing to see as a fan.
This team is the biggest embarrassment to the NHL Not just the players, there is talent there. Ownership, management and I’ll say it now, the coaching just TERRIBLE!!!
Start a more physical game!!
this is bullshit … no more excuses!!!!! 15 years of misery – I don’t care who is injured. Pegula is the worst owner in professional sports and Adams is more qualified to be in a Beavis and Butthead movie than in an NHL office
Lindy is too soft on his players, 3rd period limit ice time on his top players (benching). Why 3 goalis, waive one & bring up your top prospect, guess who & play him.(LEVI). Only way to change management is dont Buy TICKETS!
The entire Sabres organization is out of excuses. They are the biggest laughingstock in pro sports. Adams MUST GO!
Every time Adams talks to the media. The first question for him should be “ Kevyn, how do you still have a job?”
You heard here first! Sabres 3 Avs 2. Their pride and dignity as professionals will shock the world tonight!
This is a sinking ship. The more the team fails, the more management hold more value to these pieces than any other team in the league does. I won't give up on the Sabres but I have given up on management 2 years ago. The fact that the AHL line had to get things done, and the veterans still could not only play enough defense to keep a 2 goal lead, but give up 4 goals in the 3rd…makes me wonder if the "talent" here even get reprecussions. You make 1 mistake in a game and if it results in a goal…repercussions. Rochesters Coach Leone on Levi was the only bright spot I saw in all of this whole broad spectrum of this pro level management.
We folded like a lawn chair last night. Sabres player's couldn't wait to get the puck off there sticks 2 NO WHERE .
FIRE LINDY AND ADAMS!!!!
The new stadium and all the bs im over jooville Terry will be TP and its all ass vapor. Terry sucks
I'm ready for the Sabres to drop out and retire forever. This team doesn't deserve any sympathy or fans. No matter what they try, no matter who they hire, they will always be a vector for depression. Go away and never come back Sabres, you will be easy to forget.
I've been a fan since early 90s I don't know what to think anymore. Management is not giving Lindy the players that's what I see
Shame on anybody still buying Sabres tickets and supporting Pegula's fiasco!
The ownership FIRED THE BEST GM AND COACH IN TH HISTORY OF THE NHL SCOTTY BOWMAN…
WHY IS Kevin Adams still your GM Terry, HELLO MCFLY! WTF
The Sabres need to trade for playable assets. Trade Power or Byram and for a player. Wish we could trade Norris but we need a number 1 center. Get someone young and keep our first this year and tank.
