Paul Maurice, Panthers Postgame: Marchand Gets 1,000th NHL Point, Florida Beats Washington Capitals

uh celebrating, you know, it’s coming. So, it’s uh he’s been so prolific over his career and then um yeah, you know what? It’s good for him to kind of have an experience at home. I think that that’s really nice that he gets to have the the fans appreciate it, celebrate it with him. Uh it’s great. Fun to do it in the win, too. I would think far better for sure. So, we had a bunch of guys I thought had good nights. Uh, Teras off especially and lots of work early and then they’ll be the number of those shots wouldn’t necessarily look particularly dangerous, but the traffic they’re so good in that front with their size and their sticks that he had to work really hard in that net. A couple of big goal by Rody uh just to get our bench feeling good. It was a bit of a slow period. You you know that coming in when you come off the West Coast, you might be a little bit slow and then I thought we got faster after that. He had some hard luck games in Columbus throughout his career and obviously the start here. Yeah. Much better than his record. And I think that uh that could be a really good thing for him, right? The adversity that you face having to grind winning against a real good team on a big shot night. So he didn’t luck into it. He’s first night we scored some goals for him. So we think there’s more wins in him. You spoke after the biggest game about the importance of Rhino getting the goal on the power play. Another two power play goals tonight. you feel? And I do. The last couple of games look quite a bit different. Um, excuse me. Uh, I do. It feels different. It’s faster and because it’s faster, there’s more options. So, we’re working off both sides and it’s it’s it’s trending the right way. A lot of home games coming up. How was it to start with a game like this? Feel good to get off the road. It you’re I almost think it’s easier to come It would have been easier to come and play yesterday. You almost keep the road trip and then take some time off. Um, but good to be home. Now we’re going to have to be good at home. Bunch of guys tonight got milestones. It’s just kind of cool to go into the room after the game. It’s good, right? So there’s the bigger cheer. Everybody gets to celebrate it together um again on a win. I guess if you have that many guys have milestones, you’re probably going to win the game. We didn’t beat Washington last year, so that was a bit of a challenge for us. And I thought we were better in some areas tonight. And how how’d you like your third period? You give a sort of in front and you guys answer back. Answer back and then I had some good action too. It wasn’t a sit back game. I think I think we were almost mentally ready to play, but physically we were a little bit behind it then and found that as the game went on. I think you find if you have a really fast third period, first period when you come off the road like that, you worry about how long that’s going to last and I thought we kind of built through the game. Thompson’s been so good this year. How important was to kind of create that chaos you guys like to run? Yeah, I I thought we’ve been better. We’ve been working on this offensive zone game. We’re getting quicker pucks to the net with more traffic to the net, but a bit more chaos. Um, it’s a challenge against them. They got a good team and then, you know, be a dominant team like they were last year. I I think they’re equally as powerful. They’re missing an important player as are we. Uh, they’re a good team. You got to love the honesty of a guy like Marchand. We asked him about he’s like, “This is the worst game of my worst game of my season.” And you know what? everything I I do appreciate I I do appreciate it because he’s got a really good handle on his game. There are guys that play in this league who don’t think they ever make a mistake and uh he knows exactly his good nights and then and then tougher nights and tonight the puck wasn’t his friend at times. So he only got two points, right? That must be must be nice. I don’t know. I we’ll have no idea how that feels. And Sam Reinhardt said he had to tell tell him that that first assist wasn’t his that he didn’t touch the How tough is that? Who breaks the yummy white of it? No, you know what? And that’s the good part about how they review everything. So, there’s no question about it. And you you you don’t you don’t want to get a point that’s not yours when you’re that close to it because you’ll hear about it in every game for the rest of your career.
