Zach Edey close to a debut, plus recent Marcus Smart comments on Memphis Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies could be getting a big addition back, and I mean big addition. Plus, Marcus Smart made some interesting comments lately about the Grizzlies and what happened at the trade deadline. We’re going to talk about all of that and we’re going to preview the game against the Cavaliers coming up right here on Locked on Grizzly. It’s Friday. It’s Friday. So, we got to get down on Friday. Even without my co-host, Joe Monax, we’re gonna get down on this Friday. If you’re watching on YouTube, you see what my shirt say. You probably do because it’s backwards, but it says good vibes only. You know what that means? It’s been a rough week. I know the Grizzlies ain’t got no wins this week and all that, but we coming into this episode with good vibes. Everybody just breathe in, breathe out. Like, we’re bringing some good vibes into this Friday. We got a lot to talk about. We got a lot to unpack. And you got some reasons to be excited. There’s not a lot to be excited about with the Grizzlies right now, but there are there’s a couple things. and none other than none I think more than the idea of Zack Edy potentially returning very very soon here we saw in the last injury report Zack Zack Edy was upgraded for the first time to doubtful uh when that usually happens in the history of the Grizzlies over the last couple years you usually see on next injury report they’ll probably be questionable and potentially could return that game or be another game out whatever the case may be but Zakit will be back here uh potentially in one of the next two games. This Cavaliers game is very realistic. Uh I think there’s a good chance uh that he’s back. Tomas Eselos spoke about, you know, Zack Edy recently, all the progress that he’s been making, all the good things he he had a lot of good things to say, you know, about Zack Edy. Again, we talked to players recently. We talked to, you know, Contavius Cwell Pope said, “Hey, I’ve been seeing, you know, a Zack Edy work out and he he’s going to be big for us. uh he there’s a lot of things that he can do uh for the Grizzlies. So, I’m going to talk about some of those things that I’m going to expect from Zach Ed because I know my co-host Joe Molax has already kind of uh touched on the idea that Zack Edy will be back soon, but here’s what I’m expecting because we know what this team is missing. We know what this team needs and we know what Zack Ed’s strengths are based off of last season. uh in a smaller sample size. So, we’re going to we’re going to kind of play it off of that. But, Zack Edit rookie year was already a strong rebounder. Got better uh with his screen setting over the course of the year just learning the angles, learning, you know, to play with certain players with John Morant uh and and learning how to, you know, uh set the screens for Jaw specifically because that’s who it’s that’s who he’s going to be involved with more than anyone else when it comes to setting these screens. So, uh I’m really intrigued by the fact that he’s going to give this team this extra physicality uh that I think it’s been missing in the front court. Particularly like Jiren Jackson Jr. said it himself because I mentioned uh the fact that we’ve seen against certain teams because teams guard Jiren Jackson Jr. different ways and we’ve seen all of them and two of the ways that stand out to me the most because these these aren’t just throwing your four man on Jiren and just say hey go guard him. Uh two that stand out to me the most is some teams will put a quicker smaller guy we saw Houston with Josh Kogi. Uh we saw the Thunder even throw some Alex Caruso you know at Jiren. Uh they they put those smaller guys who can have a better uh job of staying in front of Jiren. So basically, you’re forcing Jiren to start in the post. Jiren is at his best when he’s got the ball at the top of the key and he can get downhill. He can get to his move. That is the best scoring version. That’s why we talk about how good of a scorer he is in isolations because he’s usually getting the ball uh somewhere at the top of the three-point line and he can go whichever way he wants and he’s big, he’s strong, or he’s either quicker than you. So, he has an advantage in most of those matchups. But when you put a smaller guy in front of him that’s able to slide the feet, that’s able to cut him off, uh there’s a very realistic chance that Jiren’s going to pick up some offensive fouls. And we’ve seen that. We’ve seen that a few times this season already play out. Jiren picking up offensive fouls with those smaller guys guarding him. And then the other one, and this is the one that’s going to be completely taken away when Zack Edy get back because you have this option with Jock Land because he isn’t as much of an offensive threat and he gives you the offensive rebounding, but you know, it’s not to the level of Zack Edy. But what some teams have done and even those teams that we just mentioned uh in in lesser degrees like I think we saw um with the Thunder like there was a point where they put uh Hardenstein, you know, on Jiren Jackson Jr. Some teams have done done this where they put the center on Jiren and they use their four their fourman to guard Jock Landale because they aren’t at they aren’t worried about Jock Landale being this overly physical pres presence that’s going to take advantage of that. You can’t do that against Zack Edy. You can’t do that against Zack Edy because he will abuse you. He’s big. He’s 7’4. He’s strong. You put a smaller guy on him, it’s offensive rebound. And if it’s not offensive rebound, they’re down there fighting for their life, grabbing on his jersey, pulling them down, and the referee’s going to blow the whistle and say, “Ball stays down here. Grizzlies ball. Take it out.” So, Zack Editi gives you that forceful presence where defenses won’t have as many options against Jiren Jackson Jr. So, one of the side effects that I’m expecting to come out of this is a better version of Jiren Jackson Jr. We should see, you know, now defenses have less options to throw at Jiren. Uh it’s going to be very unre realistic for a lot of teams to say, “Hey, let’s put our bigger guy on Jiren to take away his strength advantage and uh we’re gonna put a smaller guy on Zack Eyee.” You’re going to lose that battle probably nine times out of 10. So, I’m looking forward to seeing that. But here’s where I want to end it. Here he is. This is this is just a this a point that I want to make with the fact that Zack Edy is on his way back because we’ve talked about the Grizzly struggles and all of that. And I know some people, you know, saw uh my ex post where I mentioned that, you know, things are ugly right now and and you if you’ve been watching the last couple episodes, Joe Mullen has definitely uh talked about the fact that things are really ugly right now. But I said what’s standing out to me about this Grizzlies team that’s that’s scary in a not good way is nothing jumps out to the screen as that’s the area that they can hang their hat on. I don’t care who you’re missing. If you go through the course of the history of good basketball teams, a foundation is always set, you know, with the coaching staff. And Tomas is talked about this from the beginning. We need to establish our identity. Well, I’m looking at this team right now. They’re not really good offensively. They’re not good defensively. What’s the identity? Is it just playing fast? Can’t separate yourself by playing fast because a lot of teams are playing fast. It’s just the way in the NBA right now. So, you’re not standing out by getting up the court. It’s not like the Suns in 2007. Everyone’s playing fast. So, it’s a situation where it’s like I’m not seeing where the Grizzlies could stand out, but there’s always been hope. There’s always been hope because some people could say, well, you know what, they don’t have Ty Jerome, so they don’t have another primary ball handler other than John Morant or they don’t have Zack Edi, so they don’t have that physical presence on the inside. They don’t have that guy who can create the space with his screen setting to the level of Zack Edy or the offensive rebounding or the defensive rebounding that he brings to the table and the and the ability to take some pressure off of Jiren Jackson Jr. They haven’t had any of that. So, with all that being said, I got to say this and this is my point after this. There are no excuses. There are no excuses with this Grizzlies team because look, you can say Tai Jerome’s the better player. If this Grizzlies team will reach its ceiling, if this team reaches its ceiling, Zack Edy will be one of the most impactful players on the Grizzlies. Zack Edy, if the Grizzlies reach their ceiling, should have a bigger impact on the team than Ty Jerome. Tajiron could be the better player all day, come back, compete for six man of the year, knock down a bunch of shots, yada yada yada. But if this team wants to reach his ceiling, you’re going to need Zack Edy to be this forceful screen setter. You’re gonna need Zack Edy to be this guy when when he has a mismatch, get that ball with two hands in the paint and yam it on someone’s head. You’re going to need Zack Edy to be that guy who is just this forceful physical presence that teams always have to account for. He wasn’t that consistently last season, but if you go towards the end of the season where Iselo took over, his minutes went up believed in him and you started to see the signs. And what did Zach Edi say at the end of the season? Strength was a big priority for him. Well, guess what? He’s had this time to ramp up. He’s had time to, you know, get stronger, get bigger, and whatever he wants to do in terms of being a more physical dominant presence. I’m looking forward to seeing how that turns out. But there’s no more excuses from me with getting Zack Edy back. I know some people are going to say, “Oh, we still don’t got Ty Jerome back.” And I’m going to say, look, if they still look really bad with Zack Edy, you should really be concerned. Everybody could should be concerned because and to a degree it’s too much pressure to put on a secondyear center but then again it’s the situation. This is who the Grizzlies are relying on to be their center in the middle. So look it is what it is. Zack Edy is used to pressure. He was he dealt with a whole bunch of pressure at Purdue as you know a multi-time national player of the year. one of the most, you know, dominant college careers of the last, you know, 25 years. Like he was that guy. So, we’re going to see, you know, uh, if Zack Edy is back against the Cavs again. This show is recorded before we get the full injury report since the Grizzlies will be playing on Saturday and his show comes out on Friday. So, uh, follow my coverage over at the Commercial Appeal. Follow me over at X at the Michael C and we’ll have the updates on Zack Ed’s availability and status. But right now, we’re starting to plan for the return because it’s coming sooner rather than later. Coming up here on Locked on Grizzlies, we got to talk about some comments that Marcus Mart made recently. He said some things about the Grizzlies organization and the trade that went down. Go take advantage now over at wayfair.com. Woo boy. Marcus Mark came in hot recently. And Marcus Martin, I think of him as, you know, chill, professional guy. You know, he may think something, but you know, keep it professional, all those things. And but sometimes you get frustrated. Sometimes you get frustrated over the course of a situation. And look, um, I was taught at a very young age, there’s three sides to every story. There’s your, there’s your side, there’s my side, and there’s the truth. So the truth’s always going to lie somewhere in the middle, but everybody has a side. And Marcus Smart’s side of what went down with the Grizzlies as he was traded is interesting to say the least. But let’s get into it. So Marcus Smart recently talked to Clutch Points uh about the trade from the Grizzlies and you know he was just asked about you know if he feels better about the trade uh to the Wizards now. And here was his quote. He said way better. You see what’s going on now? Referring to the Grizzly situation that started with me. I came back from injury and I got traded because they said I didn’t want to be there. I’m injured. What do you mean? I don’t want to be here. I’m here every day working my ass off, cheering. I’m the only one on the bench coaching, but you know how it is. Control what you can control. What do you mean I don’t want to be here? It’s what Marcus Smart said. Now, this is interesting because if you remember Marcus Smart’s tenure with the Grizzlies, it was a season and a half, full season and pretty much a little bit more than half cuz trade he got traded right before the trade deadline. Marcus Smart played in 39 games over that season plus. first season I believe he played 20 out of 82 games. Now that was the year everyone was hurt. It was that lost season and you know um he didn’t play he didn’t play much like Jaw didn’t play much. Uh a lot of guys went down that year. We know what that season was. Then the next season came and he was hurt a lot again and the Grizzlies traded him because Jaylen Wells emerged and Jaylen Wells became a starter and that situation was what it was. Marcus Smart was a reserve and uh the Grizzlies also financially needed to move Marcus Smart in order to give Jiren the contract that he eventually got. Uh that was a move that had to happen in order to create the cap space needed to sign Jiren uh to a deal using uh you know the extension with salary cap space. Now so with all that being said, here’s what I gathered. Um, one based on the things that I’ve heard is two sides to this story for sure. But let’s let’s talk about Marcus side because that’s that’s what we’re focusing on what Marcus Mart said. Marcus Mart said, “What do you mean I didn’t want to be there?” Now, this is why this could be, you know, I I get it. Like when Marcus Martin missed a lot of games with the Grizzlies, so I know to some people that comes off as did he really give it his all to be available for Memphis? I’m going to say yes. going to say yes. I know this ain’t the popular opinion and I know some people feel some type of way about oh guys come to Memphis and they don’t really want to be here and blah blah blah that whole thing. Just going to give you my opinion like did Marcus Smart look like the most fit dude going into those camps with the Grizzlies? No. But when Marcus Smart was out there, did he ever look like he wasn’t giving 110%. I don’t think so. I don’t think so. We saw him literally getting hurt from diving on the floor. Um, and when he wasn’t playing, I think that was a point that he made and it made sense to me because I saw it. I saw it every game when he wasn’t playing. There was no Grizzlies player as loud and as vocal as Marcus Smart on that bench. Whether he was talking to his teammates, whether he wasounding the referees, he was always just he was always in the mix. He was never that teammate that just sat over there and pouted and said, “Hey, I’m not playing. I don’t really want to be here.” like just trade me so I can hurry up and get out. He was very professional from my perspective. So when he said what he said, look, it it it made sense to me. Again, the Grizzlies man felt like he didn’t want to be there because of some from other things that were really going on or whatnot, but uh I never got the sense that Marcus Mark didn’t want to be in Memphis. Uh, now of course I think him not wanting to be in Memphis and him not wanting to leave Boston aren’t really the same thing. Uh, I think everyone knows he didn’t want to leave Boston. Like he wanted to be, you know, like the Paul Pierce type guys that just stay in Boston over the course of their careers and, you know, they become legends in Boston’s forever. Like they they’re they’re cultural legends in Boston. And he wanted to be that type of guy and he gets traded and they go on to win a championship and he comes to Memphis. cuz he barely plays and you know so it’s like maybe he you know did have some type of you know I don’t I don’t know what the word is like he didn’t feel like completely happy with the idea of coming to Memphis but with all that being said uh I never got the sense that Marcus Martin wasn’t energetic about the idea of playing with these guys like he definitely leaned into the leadership role the vocal role I mean the guy talked a lot. Marcus Mark talked a lot and that was just from what I could see. So, I know the players uh saw even more of it. But that’s what I made of Marcus Smart’s comment. Let me know what you guys think. You Some people I’ve seen say, “Oh, they believe Marcus Smart’s blowing smoke.” He didn’t really care about being here. He didn’t really give his give it his all to be ready to play with the Grizzlies. But again, I can only go off of what I saw being in the locker room uh talking to the guy. Uh, I never got the sense that Marcus Smart was disgruntled or anything in Memphis. So, let me know what you guys think as well. Welcome back to Locked on Grizzlies where we got a preview the upcoming game against the Cleveland Cavaliers uh here for the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies are now four and nine. The Grizzlies were once three and two. So, you’re talking about losses in seven of the last eight games. And remember what my shirt said now. Good vibes only today cuz cuz Monday we might come in here going crazy. We might come in here having to come down hard on the boys. But but right now, good vibes only on this Friday. We we keeping the good vibes going. So, uh there’s a lot to talk about in this game. We’re going to start with the Cavaliers side of things. Number one, the Cavaliers are a very good basketball team. That’s not breaking news to anyone out there. The Cavaliers are top 10 offensive and defensive rating. They played a large part of this season without Darius Garland, who’s missed the last two games uh with the toe injury after playing uh in the previous slate of games. So, uh, that’s going to be a guy that we’re going to watch to see if he’s going to be available. But other than that, uh, they’re still loaded. You got Donovan Mitchell, one of the best two guards in the NBA. DeAndre Hunter was a terrific sixman. Craig Porter Junior has been terrific for them off the bench uh, as of late. Lonzo Ball was a really good pickup uh, to replace Ty Jerome uh, in in that role. and even going beyond that that front court. But Evan Mobley and Jared Allen, it’s it’s one of the best in the NBA. And that’s why look, it’s this would be a very ideal game to get Zack Edy back because this is a team that if you don’t have a Zack Edy out there and because Evan Moley, he can go and get it off the glass. Jared Allen, he can go and get it off the glass. And we saw twice last season, for lack of a better word, the Grizzlies were just lied against the Cavs. Cavs just little boy them like it was just good just playing volleyball at the rim a lot of times. And to prevent that from happening again, your best case is to have Zack Edy available and, you know, able to play. So, we’ll see kind of what happens there because he Zack Edy being available would be a big addition in this matchup. The other thing is John Morance stats, right? John Morant just missed the game with a sore right ankle. I’m expecting him to be available in this game, but we’ll see, you know, what the injury report says and kind of where the Grizzlies will go from there. Remember, two days in between games. I want to point out this in addition to Zack East that and we can talk about it with John standpoint. I think for John Morant, it’s more of a good thing. The Grizzlies had two days in between games and no practice time. No practice time. So, look, just chance to to rest that sore ankle and to be ready to play against the Cavs. And then on the Zack Edy front, it’s a little bit different because uh this is going to be telling because if he plays against the Cavs, uh I think it’s a good sign because that means the Grizzlies have had this date in mind uh for a while that for him to be back and they’ve zeroed in on it and that’ll be that. But if that’s not the case, um these the fact that they didn’t have games two consecutive days after the Boston game, uh and they didn’t practice neither. uh did not practice either today, which is kind of a rarity for the Grizzlies. Usually when they have two off days in between games and they were coming off a backto-back, so I’m sure that was factor in, so I want to add that in. But usually after a backto-back that first day, they’re not going to do nothing. Definitely not going to do anything. They lock out after backto-back, but the day after that, every now and then they’re going to practice. So this was a case where they didn’t practice. They traveled uh to Cleveland and didn’t do anything before traveling. So, with that being factored in, uh I think that’s important to point out uh with the Zack Edy uh dilemma here or however you want to describe it, his pending return. The other thing that I want to touch on because there’s one more injured Grizzlies player and that’s Contavius Cwell Pope. Uh the right elbow injury we saw him leave the game with. Look, Cassavius Carwell Po of course his career has been a very durable player. So, uh, barring something or from saying I I really I mean I don’t know the context of the injury, so this is not even me guessing. This is just going off what we’ve seen over the course of the career. This dude is tough. He doesn’t miss a lot of time. But I’m going to say something here, and it’s it’s not going to be something that a lot of you probably disagree with. Actually, it’s it’s not some super hot take or anything, but this injury for Cedric Howard is this isn’t something that just flared up. That’s that’s the thing here. This did not just happen against the uh New York. No, it was the Boston Celtics. Excuse me. This isn’t just happen against the Boston Celtics and it’s like, “Ow, my elbow’s hurting.” I’ve seen Contavius Cwell Pope dealing with, you know, for well, his elbow for the last three games at least because I asked him about it about three games ago and he said, “No, it’s just, you know, some little nagging stuff.” And you know, he just mentioned, you know, he’s going to do some work on it and get back in the gym. You know, just real old school dude. Rub some dirt on it. I’ll be fine. Like that’s the vibe that that he gives. But, uh, at some point the Grizzlies may say, “Look, this is this is getting worrisome and let’s let’s rest it for a couple days.” No matter how the Grizzlies handle it. Here’s where I’m at. This could be a case of history repeating itself. You remember last season we just talked about these two dudes earlier, Marcus Mart and Jaylen Wells. Jaylen Wells didn’t take Marcus Smart starting spot from the standpoint of, “Hey, coach, put him on the bench and start me.” It didn’t happen like that. Marcus Smart got hurt and they say a player’s never supposed to lose his spot from an injury. Oh, no. That ain’t how it work. Marcus Smart got hurt. Jaylen Wells took advantage of the moment. That was that. Everybody’s been clamoring for the Cedric Cow to get some starts, right? If Marcus Martin misses this game, not Marcus Mark, see, I’m still talking about Marcus Martin. If Contavius Cwell Pope misses this game, Such a Coward’s probably going to be put in start lineup. Take advantage because if he does what he does, if he does what he should do, Kavius Cwell Pope be coming off the bench going forward. Period. Toaso won’t even be able to deny it. So this could be that opportunity for Sedic Coward. Injuries aren’t fair and you don’t want anyone to get hurt and I really hope Sedic Coward I mean Davis Cwell Pope is is okay. Like but we’ve seen this a lot of times different times. I remember David Lee, Draymond Green, Jaylen Wells last season, Marcus Smart. Sometimes guys get hurt. Another guy steps in and they’re like, “Hold up now. We might have found something.” But in this case, you know what you’re going to get if you put Cedric Coward in that starting lineup. We’ve talked about the numbers when he’s played alongside of Job, Jiren, those guys. Well, you know what the numbers look like. you’re just going to get it right at the beginning of the game instead of some random point in the third quarter or something. This could be that chance for Sedic Cow. We We’ll see if it happens. But again, another opportunity for the Grizzlies uh to to try to get a win, man. It’s going to be tough against Cleveland, but the Raptors the Raptors just put it on the Cavs pretty good. The Raptors just really put it on the Cavs. Uh this isn’t an unbeatable team. The Cavs are 8 and5. Uh, so they are very beatable. We’ll see if the Grizzlies can be those one of those teams that makes them look that way. 1. Dont even care about our games anymore. And what difference does it make who's returning from injury we still have this bum ass coach trying to make his Paris style basketball work in the NBA and it doesn't!! Hes killing this team

  2. I was rootn 4 for my TEAM when we was winning no more than 20 games a Season in da late 90s early 2000s. It's frustrating but I knw we are gonna iron these kinks out, LET'S GO GRIZZ!! LETS GO TIGERS!!

  3. I know they stated that most of the coach previous players didnt like him at first but soon really brought in. I hope that happens soon so our team can be on one page. I also hope Ja doesnt demand a trade before it occurs.

  4. At this point I'm just watching games to root on Cedric, Cam and now Edey. Would love to see GG get it going. At least they consistently play hard

  5. I’m with you about Marcus Smart. And we really needed his coaching.. even when he was injured. Jaren has played his hardest with Smart on the team.

  6. Ive been saying we gone need zach edey since the beginning of the season, looking at out center line up and its the reason ja and jjj struggling, they always had a center

  7. The Grizzlies have guaranteed Jaren Jackson Jr. $240 million dollars yet he can't function properly without Edey?? You would think the $240 million dollar guy would elevate players and not the other way around. If the $240 million dollar guy can't function with Zach Edey then what is Edey worth?!?!? 😳😳😳😳

  8. Crazy how ppl are still blaming Ja for a 40pt loss he didn’t even participate in.. “GMs can do no wrong” this is why the rest of the world considers Tennessee to not have the mental capacity to be represented like everyone else.. just a bunch of animal brains in real ppl
