New York Islanders Postgame Availability | NYI at VGK (11/13/25)

What what kept you guys in it after giving up those two goals in the third period? Well, that’s just kind of been our mentality, you know. I feel like we’re never out of a game and um I feel like we can really get it done every night and uh we just got a lot of guys that battle, you know. Um Sroa was amazing for us to keep it at uh 3-2 there for a while, give us a chance to tie it up and just a full team effort. Just take us through your goal to tie it in the third. Um yeah, just a good battle in the corner. kind of work it out and then just just we made some good plays. They get it over to me. Sha made a great great pass and uh it was a good screen in front. Sometimes that goes unnoticed and I don’t know who was in front if it was Lazy or whoever was but uh it’s a great play. You know after Vegas’s push in the third period. Yeah, I mean we definitely didn’t stop uh fighting. Um I mean I just think from the start our game was uh you know we we started out hot. I think we were better team than them. Um I mean Roki made a lot of big saves for us. So, I mean, when you have a goalie like that in the net, it definitely helps. But, um, yeah, I mean, we kept fighting back. What about that pass Drew Mans before he kicked it over? Yeah, I mean, way to find me. It’s pretty easy. I mean, all I have to do is pass over to Bars in the net. So, yeah. I mean, uh, Drew I mean, the goal wouldn’t have went in if uh Drew didn’t find me there. So, um, yeah. Did you see space from the blue line on your goal or uh was it just trying to get the puck to the net through traffic? No. Yeah, you uh I mean obviously you know you pre-cout teams but um I mean I was walking and there was a clear lane and there was great screen in front so I just had to put in the right spot. Three straight road wins for this group. What does it do for confidence? Yeah, I mean it’s everything. I mean I think just winning games is confidence for sure and uh we believe in this uh group we have in here and you know to you know get three wins. We just want to keep it going and we’re having fun. Just sinks through your goal in overtime. Yeah, I mean I think to to get there uh you know before that goal we we did a lot of good things. You know the tying up goal uh I thought we stuck with it the whole game. Uh Sroi obviously made those key saves key saves and right before that goal. If he doesn’t make those save then we don’t even have the chance to score that goal. I just you know took him oneonone took a chance on the shot and I guess that’s what you do in Vegas, right? take a chance and play the odds and put the puck on net and it went in. So, uh, got the two point, we got a game tomorrow, so we want to go back tomorrow and play the same way when you guys go out on the penalty kill. How much of a weapon, you know, collectively do you feel you have being able to score short-handed? Yeah. Um, I think our we’re we’re on the same page right now. It’s been key for for our team. It’s it’s big in in this league the power play. There’s so many good power plays and if you give one a night or two a night and that means you got to score at least one two three goals and um I think we have the same mentality when you know we we want to kill kill the the play first and if we have the chance then uh to to take it down then we do and I don’t think we’re I think we we take the risk when it’s needed and the guys are pretty smart about it. Talk about resilience a lot tonight. Well, it’s exactly what the word I had in mind. I mean, before coming here, um, up two nothing and then score at the end of the sec the second period and then tie the game and then score another one right after to to make it a 3-2 game and then scored. We had a huge kill because of the challenge and um, score on empty netter and then short-handed and you find a way to score a game. I don’t think I don’t think you see that very very often between you and I. So, yeah, resilient on the Theodore goal. You guys decide not to challenge us. What What do you see on that play? Yeah, it was a tough call. I mean, it’s it part of us I think part of us wanted to challenge it, but at the same time, I mean, we felt like the puck was loose and um it was like a loose puck and then he but he definitely pushed into the pad. There’s no doubt about that. But we thought it was a loose puck, so that’s why we didn’t do it. the other one I mean the Hawkeye I mean went down and and we didn’t I thought the league should have should have done something about this and then they should they should review themsel and and decide if it was good goal or not but rule 69.1 says that when the player pushed the you know into the goalie the the so I don’t know if the writing is it means something anymore you know and and if doesn’t if it’s not the case so they have to redo the the the the rule book. Yeah. Um, what kind of weapon has the penalty kill become for you in terms of being able to push up ice and score? Well, first of all, I mean, we have a lot of trust in the way we’re killing the penalties right now and Boogie deserve a lot of credit for working so hard with our guys and our guys deserve a lot of credit to put a lot of pride into it. So, but at the same time, um, it allows you to take chances, example, on that challenge call. I mean, if you didn’t trust, you would not challenge, but you believe that you’re going to kill it. So, I mean, you’re comfortable to do that and and I think that that motivate us to do it and but I mean, it’s, you know, we’ve been tested. I mean, come on, Jersey and these guys are really good power play. I mean, Hik is a phenomenal player. So, I mean, he holds on that puck, sees the plays, make plays. I mean, it’s it’s pretty to watch. What What have you been doing to become more effective six on five to to to get yourself to overtime there compared to, you know, maybe in the past? Um, no. I think we’re moving the puck well on our power play. I think brings confidence and Ray’s been working hard at establish a a a structure that we want to try. And I mean, I will say this, our coaching staff have been doing a really good job. the guys have been working hard on the power play probably killing and faceoffs and the the the three of them are are are really really solid right now. I was talking about the empty net situations where you you’ve become more effective this season it seems. Well, we we scored what couple so far you know and they’re key moment in games. I mean you you gives you an opportunity to to bring the game in overtime like tonight. huge difference between coming out with zero point and two points. So, it happened enough against us. So, it’s nice to see that happening for us. Sroen lost half his stick in that in that first period. I think the puck at the butt end. Have you did that ever happen to you as a goalie where you you lost half your stick? Well, yeah. I’m sure it did. But, uh he’s playing so well right now. I mean, come on. He’s he’s giving us a chance to to be in every game and and um obviously I mean the penalty killing he’s he’s one of the reason why we are so successful and um since the Washington game he’s been on the roll and playing really good hockey for us. Another big night offensively for Matthew. He’s set some early season records tying Triier for power play goals. He’s leading rookie scorer leading tied for goal scoring for defense and all those things. you’re doing a good job. I should have asked a question, you know. Um, no, it’s it’s impressive. I mean, at such a young age and and um the decisions that he make out there and how he handles the the how he handle the puck. I mean, the puck management that he does and and with so much confidence and calm, you know, like move the puck and making the right decision out there. I mean, it’s it’s it’s impressive. I mean, every day you’re always like, “Wow.” You know, he does more and more. So, it’s impressive. With what Schaefer is able to do, how much more important is it that you guys get traffic in front? He seems to get every shot through. Yeah. And and the It’s not just Yeah, his shot is really good. I mean, that that wrist came pretty good on that goal. I think it was the second goal. Um, but what I love is is how fast he is on the ice, the energy that he brings. I mean, I think it’s contagious.

Hear from Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Mathew Barzal, Matthew Schaefer and Head Coach Patrick Roy after tonight’s game vs the Vegas Golden Knights.
