Carolina Panthers – Bryce Young and Dave Canales still haven’t found chemistry together
If you’re watching on YouTube, we are about we are going to bring back something. And if if you’re not watching on YouTube, I’ll describe it for you. Uh we’re going to bring back something that we did last year, two years ago. Maybe Bryce Young’s been here a lot longer than it seems. Maybe a little last year, too. But yeah, uh it’s called the Bryceometer. And the reason why we’re bringing back the Bryceometer, it’s all about confidence. And it’s a conversation that we haven’t revisited in a while, but uh we’re going to here. And right now, the confidence level in Bryce, not high, right? It is just barely above rock bottom. Uh if you’re if you’re looking, it’s a like a odometer looking scale with the the little red arrow pointing almost to like where empty would be on a uh a gas gauge on the dashboard of your car or zero miles hour. Yeah, exactly. um with the the all the way down where it would normally say empty, it says is cam available and it’s it’s knocking on the door of that. Right in between No Way He’s 510. Yeah. No way he’s 510. If it went all the way to the right, it would have like all the way full. It would have been going to be forever young. There’s uh Bryce of America Stadium, there’s that’s my quarterback and all the way on down. So, it’s it’s it’s something we did early on in in his career. And the reason we did it is because um when you do have a young quarterback, a rookie quarterback, it fluctuates aggressively, right? Good game, everybody. They’re the best in the world. Bad game, everybody. They stink. It flies back and forth. You would think by year three that all this would be settled. Uh but the same thing is happening, right? I’m I’m getting in arguments on both sides. They’re coming from all directions, right? After the win against Green Bay, I was critical of some things Bryce Young did. And guess what happens? Everybody’s screaming at me about he’s a winner. Everybody’s screaming at me about uh he’s clutch and it’s this and it’s that. And then he plays nearly identical football, by the way, uh in a loss to the Saints. And guess what? Now the world is crashing and everybody hates Bryce. And I’m just I’m just simply, you know, throwing a few few things out there that uh you know, the confidence from the coaching staff towards the player isn’t super uh obvious and that’s going to make it difficult and they need to do certain things to give their offense a fighting chance whether they believe in their quarterback or not. And I’m getting trashed the other way about how it’s Bryce’s fault and all this. So, so here’s what I want to be clear about the confidence situation. The Bryce confidence level that we used to do and have up here as a like a spot start. It’s getting a the call up to the bigs for for one start is about like our confidence in Bryce. How confident are we in the player? I I still think Bryce is confident in himself. I still think if you talk to some teammates, they’re still confident in Bryce. That’s not what I think the conversation should center around right now. The confidence that matters right now is from Dave Canales to Bryce. How confident is Dave Canales in Bryce? And simultaneously, I I don’t think it’s confidence going in the other direction. It’s probably trust. So, it’s confidence from Dave Canales to Bryce and it’s trust from Bryce to Dave Canales. That is what I think is if anything is holding back a team um other than just their ability to play and execute. I think that is a relationship that we we should focus in on a little bit at this point in the season. The confidence between Bryce and Canales is shaky and I I I this is not a new conversation. Uh if you remember before the season, we do our our uh cons and cons. What are you most confident in? What are you most concerned about? One of my pre-season concerns was nobody was really addressing the fact that that relationship had to have taken a hit last year. Bryce Young was benched, right? One of the very first high-profile decisions that Dave Canales made as a head coach was to bench Bryce Young. It was two games into his career as a head coach. He benched Bryce and then Andy Dalton gets in the car accident, thumb injury. Bryce goes back into the starting lineup and there were there were some signs of positive, right? They won some games, right? Had a couple games where he uh threw for a touchdown or two touchdowns, no turnovers, and and still there was a reluctance to name Bryce Young the quarterback going forward, the starter going forward. It was always, well, we’re going to watch the tape and decide. Oh, we’re going to check on on everything and decide. And then maybe Wednesday we’d hear the news that Bryce Young was going to be the starter again. Maybe I was looking into things too much, but I vividly remember on the show uh playing some of the the locker room speeches that uh that Dave Canales gave to the team and he was giving out like hurah hip hip hay for guys that had a half a sack and he wasn’t mentioning Bryce who led a game-winning drive or whatever it was. Uh it it felt very like, okay, these two aren’t on the same page. And then they came back the next year and everybody just act like all that was going to go away. And I was just a little leery that you could just sweep that stuff under the rug and pretend like that relationship is going to be all hunky dory unless they did some real work. And and not to say they didn’t that there weren’t signs that they did some work. I remember Dave Canala showed up at Bryce Young’s youth camp and brought his kids and it was like all right they’re they’re putting some work in but I wasn’t convinced that the relationship was fully mended and obviously a sketchy relationship can survive when things are going well right after you’re winning games everything can go well it’s when you hit the the basement it’s when you’re at rock bottom that the strain on those pipes can lead to bursts That trust is hurting the team. That trust is or lack of trust and lack of confidence is hurting the team. We’ve seen it multiple times this year. Bryce Young makes a bad mistake early in a game. This week it didn’t even count, right? He threw a bad interception that got called back on a roughing the passer and it felt like the the entire coaching staff went not trusting that guy to do anything. Uh not the rest of this game at least. Right? We’ve seen you make the mistake and everything recoils, which I I completely understand. Right? If you don’t think a player is good enough to execute what you’re asking them to do and then they go out there and make a huge mistake, I get the human nature to say, “Nope, and not do not going down that path again.” But if you do that, the offense doesn’t have a chance. No, there like I’m going to say this and it might sound ridiculous, but I I promise you it is true. Even if they’re not complete, you have to test defenses downfield. You want them to be complete. I’m not asking you to like, you know, intentionally find bad throws or incompletes, but you have to test teams downfield just to show them you’re willing to, just to show them it’s a possibility. If you if you don’t, it it’s it makes it way too difficult to play offense in the NFL. And that is regardless of confidence and trust uh between coach and player. You have to call the plays. You have to, especially if your running game isn’t working at an all-time efficient level. They may have been lulled to sleep a little bit by how well Rico Dael was running the ball for the first three starts he was given. Because that’s that’s a that’s a fun house mirror. That’s La La Land. That’s not real life. If you have a running back who everybody knows is going to get the ball 25 plus times and he’s running for six yards a carry, that’s that’s enjoy it. Embrace it cuz it ain’t going to last. Defensive coordinators aren’t so dumb to just let you keep doing that. So eventually you’re going to have to loosen the defense because even a missed connection on a deep ball serves a purpose. as far as setting up the next play, as far as setting up the next run if you want it to be a run or setting up the next underneath pass if you want to have a short pass. And if Dave Canales isn’t confident enough in Bryce to do it, fake it. You have to. And if if Bryce isn’t trusting in Dave Canales enough, right, because the the opposite way is true as well. If Dave Canales is drawing up deep balls and Bryce isn’t trusting them to to work or isn’t trusting them to become open, so he’s getting off it quick or finding a checkdown or doing whatever, that’s just as bad. You know, you you can severely dislike a person that is in your locker room, coach, player, whatever. Those couple of hours you you’re on the field playing with each other on a Sunday, you pretend. You fake it. You can not like your receiver. If he runs a 4-3, guess what? You’re going have to chug him up a deep ball. Got to do what you got to do. Dave Canales was asked uh was this was this Monday that he was asked on Monday if Bryce is confident taking shots downfield in the offense. Bryce comfortable taking those those deep shots. We’ll have to just keep growing as a group and make sure that, you know, we we’re the time on task, the trust factor, the media factor, all those things, you know, grow. Now, uh, I want to give credit to the reporter. That was Vash. I heard Carolina Blitz. There you go. Carolina Blitz. Um, can we play that one more time? And I want everybody to just see if they can gather what the the heck Dave Canales was saying. If you couldn’t hear Vashtai, the question was, is Bryce confident taking those shots downfield? And and then Dave’s response was this. Bryce comfortable taking those those deep shots. We’ll have to just keep growing as a group and make sure that you know we we’re the time on task, the trust factor, the meu factor, all those things, you know, grow the time on task, the trust factor, the meu factor grow. Yeah, it was a the question was a follow-up to the lack of vertical passing and the lack of vertical plays of the offense and kind of regurgitated himself a little bit. It’s week 10. Yeah. Time on task. the meu factor. I don’t know what that means. Week 10, you still need time on task to execute what has to be a core part of your offense. Like, it has to be you can’t win in the NFL with everything being 10 yards and in of the line of scrimmage. You can’t do it. Again, the me to you factor, Tim, that’s you throwing the ball to the receiver. That’s or me throwing it to you, that’s that’s me to you. Like you said, it’s week 10. It’s it’s If it’s been ignored, that’s an issue. If it hasn’t been ignored and you haven’t found a way to convince yourself to put it into the offense, that’s an issue. And and if you don’t trust the quarterback to to to do it, or if the quarterback isn’t trusting the play caller to scheme it up, you got to get into a room. You got to be real honest with each other. I’m I’m talking about like boxing gloves. Like I’m only joking, but kind of not, right? They need to be in in a room and they need to hash out whatever differences are leading to their offense not being willing to to keep defenses honest. And it I think it goes back this is me now inferring and and kind of reading tea leaves and and the the psychoanalysis of a very very not expert in psychoanalysis. I think it goes back to last year. I think it goes back to how their relationship started. I think it goes back to even if their conscious mind is saying, “I really respect this guy’s work ethic,” their subconscious is saying, “This guy messed me over last year. Why would I trust him to do any different this time?” And until you get to the bottom of that, it just lingers. That’s anybody with a relationship, a work relationship, anything that simmering iciness. Even though you walk in and say, “Hey, good morning.” Every day, you know what it’s like. The drive with Tim Donnelly 999 the fan. And and now I’m just going to build off of it. Uh when you are so exactly the same every single day, which Bryce and Dave Canales both are, win, lose, draw, hard practice, easy practice, weather, home game, away game, they are unbelievably constant. It does. I I I imagine it leads to some like, do you actually mean it? Right. You can’t feel the exact same way all of the time. You got to be authentic with each other at some point. Both of them are always saying the right thing and it’s it it almost robotic.
Tim Donnelly & Dennis Cox discuss how Carolina Panthers QB Bryce Young and head coach Dave Canales still can’t get on the same page.

Sign Cam for fucks sake .. he should have never not been the QB in Carolina until he's in his 40's
Canales basically said “Nope”
Canales is way too predictable. I can tell you in any situation what he is going to call. His play sheet is very limited.
The only person preventing Bryce from throwing deep is Bryce himself. He won't give guys a chance if they are not wide open because he knows he doesn't have the arm and is afraid to throw more INT's. He is already averaging almost 1 INT per game this season, not including fumbles.
I have been a fan since 95 I never wanted Bryce because of the height and not having a big arm for the height it wasn't a good draft choice or experiment. But you cant win in this league barley throwing 500yards in 8 games period
Im not 100% in on canalas but i do think im done with young. Maybe young will be good somewhere else but i dont think itll ever work here
Dave Canales gave a "type shit" answer to that question 😂😂😂😂
Time to end the 3 year failed experiment at QB. Say Bye to BY. Small ball is not winning.
There's no time to do it unfortunately.
We don't know there is a trust issue. This could be poor coaching decisions, poor QB play or both.
Why would Canales answer that question? That was likely a deflection with platitudes.
Dave Canales is a hack. Qb/Wr coach who cant coach Qb/Wr. I dont have faith in this dude to put the right players on the field much less put them in good positions.
CJ Bailey my team please. 2027
If BY stays on current course this year he still won't get to the yards Teddy Bridgewater threw for in his one year in Carolina. Yes, TB5, the guy we ran out of town after one season for not being good enough . . . at least as good as BY9. It's entirely possible that at the end of the season TB5 is STILL the most successful QB in Panthers history since Cam's MVP season.
Seriously. Compare TB's season in Carolina with BY. If TB wasn't good enough then BY is even less so.
Bryce is a good man, but as an NFL qb he’s below average. Got to upgrade and get someone who can actually throw the ball.
An awful lot of excuses constantly come from Canales about Bryce… It is very apparent that Canales does not believe Bryce has that "it" factor. Panthers need to let Canales go get his own QB whether that be free agency, trade or draft. Give bryce a new start and potentially get maybe a pick for compensation out of him…. that or a few water bottles.
Nobody is confident in Bryce. No team member is confident in Bryce and Canales doesn’t trust Bryce. 100% of everybody doesn’t believe in Bryce anymore. He is absolute dog shit
I just don’t understand how we go from first in the league in big time throws the last 10 weeks last year to last in the league first 10 weeks of this year
A week ago y'all was saying we are playoff contenders and every time y'all do this we lose every game after that. Just STFU and maybe we'd find chemistry 😂😂😂
The problem with Bryce is he comes from a system that rarely broke down. Most of the NFL isn’t that so when the line play does deteriorate or the run game isn’t working he can’t consistently create because he has nothing dynamic in his game. His arm isn’t strong enough unless the pocket is absolutely clean and his legs aren’t going to carry a team, unless it’s an occasional first down.
I sure would like to hear what Canada's told y'all about lack of confidence in any of the players, including BY9. Play that audio for the world please.
I like the run first offense but you do have to have a didn't passing offense.
Said this before Bryce Young and Dave Canales are both mediocre. BY9 is Dillion Gabriel/Tua. Dave Canales is like Freddy Kitchens and Ben McAdoo
Some of us have hated Bryce Young since draft day 2023, unabated. I'm one of 'em…
I think Dave is trying to save his job and keep money in his pockets
I feel that the problem with Bryce isn't that he's so glaringly and obviously bad, its that he's extremely inconsistent. He has good games where yes he may not throw for a ton of yards but he makes good plays (example would be the cowboys game this year, he was efficient yet didn't post gaudy stats). But he's a streaky player and seems to crumble when things seem to be going bad, he's good when things are going good and bad when things are going bad. We have yet to see him take that step and put the team on his back and actually carry the team to a win rather than be a cog in the engine that drives a win.
