TURNOVER TURMOIL: Can Orlando Magic FIX Costly Mistakes and make their breakthroughs PERMANENT?

Jamal Mosley was as angry as I have ever seen him in a postgame press conference. And it’s all for one reason. The Orlando Magic are beating themselves. What was a close game that required some clutch shots, but the Magic lost this game long before. the same issues that had plagued them throughout the season continue. It’s all on them to correct it. We’ll talk about the 17 turnovers for 29 points that the Magic gave up and why the Magic can clearly see they have enough to be the team we think they can be. They just got to do it. Even after bad losses, he will he’ll repeat some stats and he’ll say some things and then and he’s never one to deflect blame, but but rarely is he so pointed at the thing that his team is struggling with. Rarely does he, I don’t want to say, be snippy with media. like he’s usually pretty patient with us, but rarely is he this direct and frankly this annoyed that we would feain or dame to answer about anything but the thing he wants to talk about. Some days I do miss the Steve Clifford just come in, say your peace, and go home. This was a frustrating effort for the Orlando. This was a game where Orlando once again got out to a hot start, where the Magic once again looked like they could be world beaters, the team that we all imagined they can be and we could get we’ll get to that. But the end of the day, this game turned on the mistakes the Magic repeatedly made. 17 turnovers for 29 points. That was the line. 17 turns for 29 points. That was the line Jamal Mosley repeated time and time again after he spoke to us in the media. And again, 17 turnovers or 29 points. The Magic had just 15 off Boston’s 14 turnovers. If you are looking for a difference in this game, if you’re looking for a reason why the Magic have struggled so much to start the season, start there. Start with the turnovers. Start with those mistakes that are maybe not entirely preventable. Sometimes, you know, teams are good at forcing turnovers. The the Celtics are good at forcing turnovers. The Blazers, who the Magic will play tomorrow, are good at forcing turnovers. The Magic, at least last year, were very good at forcing turnovers. But this year, it has been a repeated repeated problem. The Orlando Magic now through 10 games are 24th in the league with a 16 and a half% turnover rate. they commit a lot of turnovers and because they’re playing at a much faster pace because they’re doing all these things and and they’re getting more possessions, those turnovers feel bigger and because the Magic are struggling to make shots because the Magic are not not converting offensively at a high rate. It’d be one thing if like Houston Rockets have a worse turnover rate than Magic. They’re 17.4%. But they’re the number one offense in the league. It’d be one thing if that’s what the Magic were doing. Instead, the Magic are kind of scuttling. They don’t have the offensive firepower to survive the turnovers that they commit. And ultimately, turnovers are lifeblood. Last year, when the Magic were so bad on offense, the fact that they could get and create extra possessions, they could limit your ability to take shots, that was a big key. But this year, the Magic are giving possessions away. And look, pace and possessions are up around the league. Everybody’s trying to play faster for the most part. There are a few teams that are. Everybody’s trying to play faster. And if you’re giving away possessions to teams, especially teams that are struggling, especially teams that need the lifeline. If you’re giving away possessions, you’re giving away the game. And look, there are a lot of culprits. It’s trying to make it’s some of it is like Jaylen Sug said after the game, some of it is trying to make the extra pass where the extra pass isn’t there. The ball needs to find who it needs to find and you need to be willing to shoot when you have the shot. They’re definitely a few turnovers that were simply caused, certainly a few missed shots that were caused because the team overpassed. That is a fair criticism. That is a fair criticism of some of the things Matt are doing and and that’s coming from a good place. That’s correctable. Some of it is yes trying to do a little too much. Jaylen Suggs had a wild behind the back pass that went directly to the Celtics. You can’t turn the ball over like that. Some of it is just carelessness and awareness. There were a lot of back taps from both teams. Both teams had their share that there are a lot of instances where you’re bringing the ball up and someone sneak behind you and grand theft Alvarados you and steals the ball and knocks the ball away, knocks you out of rhythm. The Magic had all of these kinds of turnovers and at the end of the day they all add up. In the end, in the fourth quarter alone, the Magic had four turnovers for nine points. It is a big reason the Celtics were able to expand their lead to 11 points after a nip and tuck game for really most of the certainly most of the second half, but really since the Celtics got back in the game late in the first quarter for most of the game. Turnovers allowed Boston to stay in this game, allowed Boston to win this game because you’re giving a a mediocre offensive team that’s still very potent extra possessions. And look, we could talk about the end of the game. We could talk about how Paulo Ben Carro got himself going and helped will this team back into it, getting to within two points, but then we also have to talk about they have the chance to make shots. Jaylen Brown hitting a huge three and another huge basket. The pass to Derek White for a huge three. The pass to Jordan Walsh for what turned into the clinching three-pointer. We can talk about those plays and how the Magic overextended. You can certainly talk about how the Magic need to be better on the defensive end and how the Magic still gave up a lot on the defensive end and did not play a perfect or clean defensive game. That certainly feeds into some of the offensive problems which we’ll get into here in a minute. But everything has to start with protecting the ball. You cannot score, you cannot build an offense, you cannot build consistency, you cannot build rhythm if you are not protecting the ball. And time and time again this year, the Magic are not. It’s not even just that they’re turning the ball over at such a high rate. The Orlando Magic give up are 22nd in the league giving up 20.8 points off turnovers per game. These are free points and you don’t see a lot of winning teams giving up this many points off turnovers. One of them it happens to be the Portland Trailblazers who the Magic will see tomorrow. They’re five and four. They give up 23 points off turnover spring. Creating turnovers is a big deal. The Spurs and Rockets and Lakers are one of them, too. But again, the Magic’s offense isn’t nearly efficient enough to get away with that. And so, we could talk about so many other problems this team has, and and we’re going to I’m not going to I’m not going to gloss over some of them. We could talk about so many problems the Magic have, but all of it stems from all of it starts with all of it begins with the turnovers. All of it begins with the Magic being able to protect the ball. And Paulo Ben Carro had six. He deserves a lot of your blame. He deserves a lot of your criticism. He deserves a lot of attention for that. The Magic had a I’m find it here in a sec. Give me a second time. The Magic had a 17.9% turnover rate. So, this game was especially bad and especially slow to a 95.5, you know, pace. The Magic just couldn’t get out and run. And so, all of this stuff goes back to the one big problem. You can’t get shots, you can’t get motion, you can’t get movement, you can’t get rhythm, you can’t get confident if you’re giving the other team the ball. And look, this team struggled with turnovers last year. It it it turned out not to be as big of a deal. Huge deal in the playoff series. That’s how Boston got a lot of their threes and and built distance in the games that they won. But this team isn’t going anywhere if they can’t protect the ball. And so every other problem you have with this roster, even the missed threes, which you know we know getting Desmond Bane shots, getting Paulo going, getting Fr going, trusting each other, getting the ball moving, it all starts with turnovers. And so frankly, frankly, again, credit to the Boston Celtics. They deserve to win. I say this after every game. So many of these losses in the first 10 games are really about the Magic beating themselves. And in this game against the Celtics, this this this chance to sweep this and guarantee a winning home stand. In this game, the Magic beat themselves again. And so one of the things that those turnovers take away is transition opportunities. by the Magic’s offense showed its showed what it’s capable of coming up here in just a moment. Again, the Lockdown Podcast Network. It’s your team every day. There’s obviously a lot of heat. Um, nobody wants to be four and six. And look, that means you’re one game from being 500. You know, two wins away from being 500. It won’t be easy with the schedule the Magic have coming up. Um, it never will be easy. Um, but there’s still a lot of time to get things right. And you know, I am maybe I’m alone on this island. Maybe I have a lot of real estate to sell you, but I am very confident. I I I still believe in what the Magic are trying to build. And it’s it’s again it’s just getting it right, getting it figured out and and very clearly this team is still figuring a lot of things out. Right now it’s just all inconsistency. You know, I came into this game saying like, okay, it was great what they did on Friday night. Friday night was a breakthrough win. Proof positive of what this team can do and how they can play on offense. 120 points per winess. Tonight they had only one 112, I think. Um 111, a little bit below their their overall season average. They’ve had some bad offensive games, but it’s very very clear that like when this works, it it can work on both ends. They they can do both. Their defense can feed their offense. They can get downhill. They can be this brutalizing force. There is no reason to believe the Magic can’t figure this out. Again, all of this is on them. Again, credit Celtics. They put you in tight tight spaces. They really get after you defensively. They’re a team that knows their identity and and right now the Magic are trying to find it again and trying to figure it out. It’s not consistent enough on the defensive end. The defense takes care of its business. The offense will take care of its business. But the offense can’t also put the defense in a bind like it has with these turnovers. The first quarter of this game, like the first quarter against Boston on Friday, as well as the fourth quarter and really the last five minutes of this game too when the Magic stormed back from 11-point lead, Paulo had six quick points. He scored, you know, we’ll get to him, but 28 points. It was a bad Paulo game for a long time and then all of a sudden it just clicked on for him. It was because the team was getting downhill. It’s because the team was playing fast, converting their defense into offense and it’s because that yes, they were hitting some tough shots and yes, they’re making some shots and they miss some critical threes. And if they make those, maybe the Magic win this game and we’re talking about something very, very different. It is a make or miss league after all. And if the only reason you’re losing is because you’re missing shots, so be it. But what continues to happen, and the turnovers are part of this, is the Magic offense stalls and slows to a crawl. And look, Boston deserves credit. They’re disruptive and all that, but Orlando just isn’t getting the transition opportunities and the speed opportunities that they need. They built their largest lead, a 12-point lead in the first quarter, thanks to 11 fast break points in the first quarter. They were just devastating. like you go watch that first quarter again and tell me you don’t believe in what this team is trying to do and tell me that you don’t see like oh if we play like this this team is going to be nearly unstoppable because everybody is flowing. The Magic starting group continues to be one of the best lineups in the league. I don’t have the numbers in front of me. I’ll look them up later. I’m going to write about on my on my write a little bit about it on my on my uh uh Patreon. the magic starting group works, but when you split when you start to break that lineup up, break the lineup, go to the bench, where you don’t have the same level of attackers and the consistency offensively, that’s when we start to see the problems. We start to see the the the gears grind to a halt. Look, this isn’t about pace in terms of possessions. The Magic can play a low possession game and have a chance like they did tonight. they could play a high possession game and have a chance like they did the other night like they they’ve done in the past. It’s not about the number of possessions. It’s about the speed, ferocity, and aggression that they play with. And look, that is seen in their transition. If you look at the synergy numbers, and I’m going to try and look them up real fast here, too. If you look at the synergy numbers, the Magic’s best offense is in transition. It is like the only only spot in a game that they play better than the league average. And in this game, the Magic had 20 transition possessions. 10 of them came in the first quarter. 10 five came in the fourth quarter. Now, they didn’t score as effectively as they normally do. 1.05 points per possession. So, again, they made some mistakes. They missed some opportunities. So whether it’s like Goa missed layup, France trying to squeeze a layup in. There were missed opportunities here. I’m not going to see you pretend otherwise. But the difference between and I’m going to look up first quarter alone they were 1.3 points per possession on 10 10 fast break opportunities on 10 transition opportunities. Their best offense comes when they run in the fourth quarter with five five opportunities. Five transition opportunities. 1.2 two points per possession. If I’m Jamal Mosley, yes, there’s a lot to work on the half court. You’ve got to be able to execute in the half court. Paul Gerald made that point. It does, you know, we can try and run as much as we want. We’re going to have to execute in the half court at some point. And and that’s absolutely true. And I don’t have those specific numbers available to me immediately. I’m not going to search them search them up real fast. But the Magic, the Magic know that they can get these opportunities and their offense works best when they get stops first and get out in transition. So, if we’re looking for a fix, like if we’re going to look for a fix, this is what has to happen. This is what needs to happen. The Magic need to focus first and foremost on getting stops. Get back to your defense again. Offense can stall all at once. Just don’t turn the ball over. Limit your turnovers. Limit your mistakes. Be methodical on offense, but quick. Be fast, but methodical. Don’t Don’t worry about getting shots up. Just get get the right shot. Just move the ball. But then focus on your defense. Focus on getting stops. Focus on um focus on using that to power the offense. That is the key. And if the Magic want to fix this, if the Magic want to get right, it starts there. The Magic are really good in transition this season. Like just plain and simple, really good in transition. And that’s an area they can continue to improve on. As we always do after games, let’s run through the box score. We’ll talk a little bit about what we saw from individuals include Paloan Carroll. I do have those lineup numbers from today at least. We’ll talk about that coming up here in just a moment. But first, today’s episode of Lockdown Magic is brought to my friends over at FanDuel. The NBA is back and there’s no better place to get in on the action than FanDuel, the official sports betting partner of the NBA. Even if you missed the start of the game or want to ride the hot hand, FanDuel has live bets on everything from who will score next to fourth quarter comebacks like the Magic tried to make tonight. Plus, you can even combine your live bets into a same game parlay for a shot at a bigger payout. The Magic of course on a back-to-back playing the Portland Trailblazers on Monday. Big game now. Magic need to get that game just to stay within striking distance of being 500 again. They need to get that game for a number of reasons just to feel confident heading into the gauntlet that is a New York Knicks on Wednesday. Magic favored by two points over the Portland Trailblazers. Magic have been favored in every game this season on FanDuel. Food for thought there. I don’t know how useful that is, but it’s food for thought there. Big challenge for Orlando on Monday, but this allows you to keep the game exciting. Right now, FanDuel is giving new customers $300 in bonus bets when your first $5 bet wins. Oh, head to fanjul.com to sign up and play your game with FanDuel, the official sports betting partner of the NBA. Let’s run through the final box score. Zero Orlando Magic fall to the Boston Celtics 111 to 1078. Obviously, a difficult loss like like this was a winnable game and I’m not throwing shade at our at our friends from the Celtics. Listen to John Kra of Lockdown Celtics. I’m sure he said something very similar on Friday night saying the saying something different. Tonight they split a baseball series. Not completely shocking and frankly like not the end of the world that the problem with this game. It’s not necessarily that they lost. It’s that they continue to lose the same way. Turnovers, offensive rebounds, these weaknesses that we hoped that just feel uncharacteristic, but these weaknesses that we keep waiting for signs that they’re going to fix keep popping up. And I want to make this clear. Even if the Magic write the ship and and I do think they will, like I’m not giving up on the season, they’ll find they’ll find a rhythm. They’ll find they’ll find something to get themselves going and they’ll get back, you know, will they win 50 games? Probably not at this point. They’d have to go 15 30 15 32. They’re currently 4 and six. They’d have to go 46 in 26 to to get to f to get to 50 wins. That’s going to be tough. Um they’re capable. I’m not going to put it past them, but I think this team could still reach its potential and still reach our expectations. You know, again, it’s it’s some of this is still them coming together and even the team will admit that, but it’s the same repeated mistakes. Obviously, it starts at the head of the snake with Paulo Ber. Um, I want to give Paulo the props for helping will the team back in the game in the fourth quarter. finished with 28 points, nine for 16 shooting, 0 for five from three, 10 for 10 from the line, six rebounds, four assists, six turnovers, plus seven on the plus minus. Um, we’ll get to the starters here in a minute. Paulo wield this team back from that 11-point deficit. Um, he was not super involved offensively early in the game. I thought he was doing a good job just soaking in attention and passing out. I think he’s learning that balance and I think for the most part he’s done well with with his passing especially. Um but tonight the turnovers were just bad. Um getting caught getting caught in bad double teams, a little reckless with some drives that led to charges. That’s what happens when you don’t really have a consistent jumper right now. Um it’s there’s just a lack of intensity almost. And again, I I maybe I’m putting maybe I’m reading too much into what I saw there, but I I do think Paulo needed needed to sharpen up. Like again, everything’s going to start with your team leader. And whether Paulo wants to be or not, he is this team’s leader. He is the guy that is going to guide this team forward and guide them to be whatever they’re going to be. And the Magic need him to play at a superstar level. And when he played at that superstar level in the last half of the fourth quarter, the Magic nearly stole this game back. So bring that intensity from the start. bring that like that glint in his eye. You could see that glint in his eye when he hit that first shot in that run. It was just like, okay, Paulo Paulo found his rhythm. He started hitting some jumpers. Um it’s just about bringing that consistently. And again, like this year just hasn’t been consistent with that. And that’s the part that’s got to change. That’s the part that’s got to change. We got someone hitting a Paulo shot behind me here at the Kia Center of the East basketball game. Fran Vager ended with 20 points, five for 17, shooting nine for 10 from the line, one for four from three, nine rebounds, three assists. He really struggled to get himself going, missed some bunnies that that he normally makes. He’s kind of been off and on with those. Um, again, he’s been the constant drum beat a little bit and and I don’t think that’s the right role for him. Um, Magic just really struggled to get him going. They struggled to get a lot of guys going. Jaylen Suggs was the leading scoreer for a long time. He finished with 20 points, six for eight shooting, two for four from three, six for seven from line, eight rebounds, four assists. had three turnovers as well. Um, Suggs was generally pretty good. Had some wild turnovers. Those happen with him. More importantly for Jaylen Suggs though, played 2839. Played nearly 29 minutes. Now, I do not think he will play on Monday. I think he’s going to sit out Monday’s game. We’ll see what that does. This team’s attention to detail and and and and obviously relying a little bit more on Ty Jones who struggled again in this game and is not really making any impact even when he’s not at fault for some of the mistakes that are being made. Um, Portland’s a big team. I don’t know if I want to play him. Um, but a really, really good effort from Jaylen. And again, he he’s getting healthier and he’s playing a little bit more. And that that is an ultimately a good thing for the Magic. Let’s talk about Desmond Bane then. Um, nine points, four for nine shooting, 0 for one from three, five rebounds, six assists. the one three-point attempt is the fewest he’s had since April 2022 or April 2021 during his rookie year. Um, the Magic got to get him shots. And now look, I will defend some of this and say, well, when the Magic do run plays to get him shots, he is drawing three to the ball. He is still terrifying teams. Teams do not want him to shoot. And obviously, you’re playing into it. and the Magic I think have to do more to get him open looks and get him shots and get him those get him those opportunities but this is a problem like the Magic got Desmond Bane for his shooting. The passing’s a bonus and they seem to be using him more as a passer now. I will grant I think Desmond Bane is trying to fit in a little bit too much. Like go get yours, man. Go like everyone said go be yourself. I don’t except for the game on Friday. I don’t think we’ve seen him be himself. I think we’ve seen him try and say like, I am trying to fit in with an established group. It’s just like, no, take your shots. Get six, seven threes. I want him to take seven threes tomorrow against Portland. I don’t know if he will. I don’t think he will, but the Magic need him to shoot threes now. I think he is making the right plays most of the time. I think he is trying to do the right thing, trying to get the ball moving. He has been a really effective passer in a lot of ways. And and while the his numbers aren’t like super high, they’re not above five yet, I don’t think. um he is moving the ball really really effectively and taking what the defense gives him. So then it’s just about okay how do we get him some open threes transition will help all these things will help the Magic need to get him going and and and it’s a problem that they haven’t yet. It is a huge huge problem that they have it yet. But let’s talk about this then. The Orlando Magic starting lineup continues to do the job. On 46 possessions on in Sunday’s game the Magic starting group averaged 1.17 points per possession. only a 10.9% turnover rate. So well below five turnovers total in 46 possessions. Well below the team’s average for the game, 1.174 points per possession. Defensively, if they’ll switch, if my thing will switch here. Sorry about this. I’m I’m working I’m looking this up. Defensively, they gave up n25 points per possession and four six turnovers. The Magic starting lineup is doing the job. As they dim the lights on me here at the Kia Center, the Magic starting lineup is doing the job. The problem is when they break the lineup. Breaking this lineup is is really the start of when everything turns off for the Magic as the Lights did here at the Kia Center. Tristan Dilva 12 points, four for nine shooting two five from three. He’s he’s really the only reliable player off the bench for the Magic at this point. Anthony Black at four points, two for seven shooting over four from three. His shooting is still like the biggest correlation between wins and losses for the Orlando Magic is still Anthony Black shooting. He didn’t shoot the ball well. Magic lost. No shock. Orlando got only 18 points off their bench. Goat scored the other two. He was one for two on shots. Again, most of them putbacks. Only four only five rebounds. He really struggled defensively. But the Magic are getting nothing from their bench right now. And so their starters thankfully are keeping them in games. Their starters thankfully have enough firepower to stay in these games. And I don’t think enough credit is being given to that because the bench has not delivered this year. And again, the Magics wins the bench plays well. And in the Magics wins, Anthony Black makes the shots and the benches in the in the wins, you know, Tristan Silva is doing what Dilva is doing. Justin Silva’s been super consistent. This team needs Mo Vagner back just for the offensive threat that he brings and the calmness that he brings, the ability to just dump the ball in the post and Mo will do something with his screen setting ability as much as anything. But the problem is not the Magic starting lineup. Like yes, it gets stuck sometimes and and playing with bench players throws them off. The starting group is really good and it’s a starting group that built the 12-point lead early. It’s a starting group that got them back from an 11-point deficit to within two with a chance to win the game with, you know, one stop one stop away from being able to tie the game with a possession in the last seconds of the game. It’s it’s still just about putting all these pieces together and it’s just it’s not happening fast enough. The Orlando Magic fall the Boston Celtics 111 to 107. They are back in action here at the Kia Center on Monday against a very dangerous Portland Trailblazers team. Do not sleep on Portland. I know they gave up a ton of points against Miami on Saturday. Maybe road is not good for them. Maybe that’s an opportunity there. But a very tough game coming up on Monday that the Magic absolutely need to win. But that’s going to do it for me today. But until then, for Orlando Magic Daily and Locked On Magic, this has been Philip Rosman. We’ll see you all again next time for another episode of Locked On Magic.

The Orlando Magic gave away their chance to sweep the Boston Celtics as turnovers once again gutted the Magic and slowed their offense to a crawl.

Orlando’s 17 turnovers led to 29 Boston points and it was the only thing an angry Jamahl Mosley wanted to mention after the game. The Magic have been one of the worst teams in the league at protecting the ball and it continues to derail their progress as they try to live up to their lofty expectations.

Every problem the Magic has springs from this turnover issue. And Orlando will not be able to take advantage of its stellar offensive lineup until it fixes this problem.

  1. I understand the frustration and panic as everyone wanted this to be a fast start to the year. Not using the same we need time like last year but this is gonna take some bumps along the way. Clearly the starting lineup it very good Suggs not being able to play longer is an issue as AB still is inconsistent. Paulo turnovers don’t help but it’s also hard to beat the team down when all but dell had a positive +/-. We are losing these game with our bench players not being consistent enough. Tristan is player great AB is a 50/50 if he will be good or not we need a 3rd player on the bench to be consistent because Suggs can’t play 30 mins we have 0 offensive punch outside the 2 young guys and this is where we are seeing Mo would give us that spark we need. It’s gonna be a long season

  2. They are who they are. Turnovers have been a problem for a few years. They also have the wrong guys shooting. 2-4 at home to start. Damn even the NBA wanted us to have a great start.

  3. At some point Mosley or Paolo gotta go so they might as well get rid of Mosley now it's obvious In the press conference Mosley was blaming Paolo for the lost

  4. the same way we had cole for continuity and then traded him when we needed to take the next step, is exactly what they have to do with mose. yeah we all love him, it was nice n thanks for everything, but we have to move on now. magic have PLENTY of fire power on offense, its the coaching staff's fault for not putting them in position.

  5. Coach Mosley knows what time it is. I know he is liked but you got to win in the pros. Especially after the front offiice has forked out the money.

  6. Magic need to get other people going, opposing team’s defensive know Magic are trying to get bane plays. Run a play that gets Suggs an open 3 get him going for example.

  7. Are getting the overreaction wave after every loss?? This was very different than the other losses, obviously there were too many turnovers, but this time the shots simply didn't fall. I think defense was ok, boston's shot quality wasn't very high but they made a lot of tough buckets.

  8. Mosley’s trying to evolve from grind-defense to flow offense but skipped the middle step teaching structured fast-break reads and early-offense spacing.

Until then, the Magic’s offense is just the same half-court traffic jam … only running in fast-forward.
