Should the Hawks TRADE Trae Young?

Jaylen Johnson this year on um if you look at his stats without Trey, with Trey, with Trey, he’s at 22, four assists, eight rebounds, shooting about 62 point eight true shooting this year. Without Trey Young, he’s at 22.8, 6.8 assist, 10.1 rebounds. Uh then he’s doing 3.1 turnovers a game. Turnovers obviously go up because, you know, he’s passing the ball more without him, but he has a 65.8 true shooting. Um and he’s shooting better from three and from the rim right now without him. Trey Young, on the other hand, but the numbers are pretty much still the same. Well, they’re better. They’re better across the board with uh without him. This is one of his This is his worst shooting year. This season right here that we’re in right now, this is his worst shooting year of his career. When y’all do the when y’all do the numbers like with uh for instance Jaylen Jaylen with Trey Young and Jaylen without Trey Young, those numbers are cool, but then when Trey Young’s there, you add you might lose some of his numbers, but then you add Trey’s numbers to that though, right? You know what I’m saying? So it’s just like it don’t really it’s Yeah. You don’t you don’t have to play as good with Trey Young. Well, I’m not even saying you’re not playing as good, but your stats, you know what I’m saying? You could still play great and your stats may look a little different, but that doesn’t you know what I’m saying? That that doesn’t that doesn’t really matter. You know what I’m saying? The thing Yeah. And the one was similar too, Ox. Right. And so the thing about it is how do you I don’t know how you justify trading Trey Young. And also to on top of that, it’s like what do we got KP for? If we’re going to trade Trey Young, how much how many years how many years do we have on K? How many years do we have on KP? Do we are we getting rid of him too? Are we starting all the way over? You know what I mean? Like, and on top of that, if you trade Trey Young, it’s like you have to get something. You can’t just go and just get a couple draft picks. Like, what do you what do you get back? That’s that’s my only thing. So, I’m not I’m not always necessarily against trading somebody. It just really it just really matters to what can I get back? You know what I’m saying? You can’t just you can’t just come off of Trey Young because you think Jaylen Johnson is great. You know what I’m saying? You got I know where you going. Why? Why do you come off of him, Domo? Because I know where you going with this. you think, okay, there’s two there’s there’s two avenues you can go. Um, when you have a team in team building, there’s two ways to go about it. We either be a business or we’re trying to win. You’re not winning with Trey Young as your best player. That’s it. Full stop. Trey Young is not the best player on a team that’s going to win. He maxed out of going to the conference finals one year. We seen the ceiling of what Trey Young can bring you as the number one player on your team. I didn’t know that. But this is this the best we’re seeing how hard it is to build around him. But this is the best collection of talent that we’ve had he’s ever had. This this this this where we are right now with him. This is the best collection of talent that we’ve had that he’s had since he’s been in Atlanta. That’s number one. Number two, they built this unit. They ain’t built this unit to get Porzingis for three years from now. They built this to do this right now. And Trey Young is a part of this. That’s all fair and that’s all good. I mean, that’s all fair and that’s all good. Um, when did Trey Young get hurt because I don’t want to just I don’t want to just Yeah. I don’t want to just judge his season off of five games, but in the five games that he has played with the best talent he’s ever had. He’s looked by Suda. So, I’m not trying to hear this. Oh, oh, well, they built a great team around him. He He been working with this great team. You have to think about it’s five games, though. That is five games. That’s why I said I’ll give him some grace. It’s just been five games. You have time to work. That’s all good. I’m not saying trade Trey Young because Jaylen Johnson is now playing good. I’m not saying trade Trey Young because of just Jaylen Johnson. I’ve been saying trade Trey Young since last year. Like this. I’m always Mr. one year too early then one year too late. I’m a Dolphins fan. I’m in a division with the Patriots. I’ve seen this my whole life. One year too early before one year too late. I understand Trey Young still has some good left in him. He’s still a good player. I give you that. But you have to think about your team. This team has the Pelicans first round pick this year. I don’t know if they also have their pick going into this draft. You have to think long term with your team. I get it. We got KP to try to maximize our ceiling this year. But let’s be real, the East is weak. We tried to maximize it, but now we’re seeing what we really have. And it’s better to just play the long game. Unless I’m over here trying to sell tickets and merch. That’s the only reason I’m keeping Trey Young here. The only reason the Hawks should not trade Trey Young is if they want to sell some more jerseys. That’s it. I’m not I’m Hold on. And by the way, I just wanted to share this Jordan um just so people can get understand maybe what Dammo is saying. So this year uh Domo, just to your point, even with Trey Young having this lineup around him, very small sample size obviously, but the Hawks best lineups this year are the ones that do not feature Trey Young. Even in the games that Trey Young has played this year, their defense in all of their lineups this year, Jordan, have been like horrific when Trey’s been on the floor. Like horrifically bad. 128 defensive rating, 142 defensive rating. Still give it grace with 134 defensive rating. What’ you say? That’s great. Exactly. Not saying that it would No, I hear you. But I think I think that’s always been the case his whole career. Right. That’s always been the case with him. So that’s I know. But I think what do I’m just saying. I think what do is communicating though is that what’s happening backtoback season think we can agree to because I think Trace is a much better player than his his reputation is is kind of at right now. But last year, remember Trey Young, we spent the first twothirds of the year, chill, where he was shooting 39% from the field and like he was clearly hurting his team with the kind of shots he was taking and the turnovers. I think the same thing this year. He’s doing the same thing. But but I’m saying that’s not good. I’m I’m also I’m agreeing with you, but that’s also one of the other reason additional reasons why you are in the last year of your deal at 26 27 years old and you don’t have another deal from the team that drafted you originally. I think it’s it’s a lot to that too, Swiper. It’s a lot. No, but it is. But it’s mostly basketball, though. They don’t think he’s a great basketball fit. So, the organization that drafted him with the ownership in place and the GM in place, with a new coaching, they’re I I don’t I’m not saying this is right either, Ox. They’re telling you we don’t believe that he is the best fit for our team. So much so, we’re letting him going to his last year of his deal, despite the allNBAs and allars without a contract extension. I think that that for me is like we almost have never seen this happen before. Also, y’all know y’all know how I feel about Trey. Yeah, y’all know how I feel about Trey. I felt I felt this way about Trey since rookie year. I’ve always felt that he takes bad shots. I’ve always felt that he’s very overrated. I always felt that his stats don’t equal the player. I felt that he’s such a liability on defense that you you add that with the bad shots he takes. I I’ve always felt this way about Trey Young, but I’ve also seen Trey Young dig his team out of many holes. I’ve seen I’ve seen him be the only lifeline for his team many a times. So, those are the reasons I do give him a little grace. Mind you, my biggest thing about trade Trey Young is just to to who and for what. That’s that’s all I’m saying. I’m not I’m not saying, oh, you can’t trade Trey Young. I’m not saying that. I’m just saying like it has to make sense. We I don’t And I know you say I know you’re not saying this, but I’m just saying we can’t just come off of Trey. We can’t Well, no, cuz No, I don’t I don’t think he’s saying that we can’t come off a Trey because Jaylen Johnson’s playing well. I understand that now. At first, I’m like, well, you can’t just trade them because Jaylen’s playing good. And now I see that you’re not saying that. But that’s my only thing. We can’t just trade players because one player’s playing good. It has to still make sense. You know what I’m saying? I think the Brooklyn Nets I think the Brooklyn Nets would be a good suitor for what they want then. If like DO said, if they ain’t trying to win a championship or they believe that they can’t win a championship for with trade and they got to think long term, send them to Brooklyn. Take some of their picks from Brooklyn. Uh and [ __ ] s poor Zena’s ass over there, too. I think Brooklyn would be more inclined to take that than any other team cuz like what else what else could you get in the NBA for the Atlanta Hawks that they specifically need? Especially if you truly believe that uh Dyson Daniels is your number one point guard. You think that Jaylen Johnson is your your guy. You got Mohamd Gay playing really really well uh as of lately. Uh Zachary Reach look like a serviceable player. Who who and what around the league do you need that can supplement Trey Young other than let’s just get draft picks? like we may not they might make the playoffs this year, but we might be better if we get some picks. So they’re defin they’re definitely going to make some man’s ass over there to Brooklyn. I think they’ll take they’ve been in the hole for the last four, five years now. I think Donald, to your point, I I think that the plan was to go deep in the playoffs and the plan was to go deep in the playoffs with Trey Young. Trey Young’s shot selection has always been an issue. I don’t think that that that I’m saying anything that’s that’s that’s new here. His shot selection has always been an issue. But where we are right now, he is playing for a new contract. So, it’s not like when guys play for new contracts, you know, they don’t shape up. We’ve we’ve spoken about this plenty of times. When you see a guy, he’s either in better shape, he’s passing more, he’s doing different things because he’s looking for a contract. That’s not going on with Kade, even though it’s a small Kade, I’m sorry, with Trey, but that’s this this is a small sample size. We only have five games to go off of him. The five games that we have to go off of, he’s been bad as a shooter. really bad as a shooter, but bad last year too as a as a three. Here’s the difference though, Drenchy. With him with him sitting on the sideline and seeing what this Atlanta Hawks team is doing, how much better they are without him, the skill set that he has to make those guys to make those guys, the skill set that he has can make those guys better. His ability to pass, his ability to playmake, his ability to speed the game up can get those guys more involved in the game and make those guys better without the shot taken. That can definitely happen because again, we’re in a contract year and because we’re in a contract year, I’m trying to get paid. So, I’m trying to make it look like I know exactly what I’m doing to make this crew better. Yeah. I mean, we also got to factor in we not on 2K. So, you know, I know a lot of fans and, you know, GMs kind of make it seem like this is 2K cuz [ __ ] show you one or two years and they trying to get up off you quick um based on that. But I do understand the predicament that the Atlanta Hawks are in with Trey Young and just Trey Young being on his last deal like him being in on his last year’s contract. Nobody really wants to go in the season on that. What would you do if you were the Hawk? I would extend them. I I would 50 55. I wouldn’t extend him that far though. I I wouldn’t extend him to I would do like a two-year extension. I would do I would try to I would try to extend him as much money as I can for two years and see what we can do with that. And I would just let him know like, hey, long term, we’re not ready to commit to that long term because we don’t know what the direction we’re going to go with you. And if he says no, I’m trading him. But for the most part, I’m giving him two years and trying to because I I got just got Pzingis. I just traded I just traded for Porzingis. So I have to see if this shit’s going to work. So I want to give him two years. Well, I think the saying to you, Jordan, that it is working. It’s it’s working. But the reason it’s working is is because we’re putting like, you know, we’re putting He’s played four games. He can’t do that. He’s They’re they’re probably going to attest to you that we’re putting Nquil Alexander, Jaylen Johnson, and Dyson Daniels and Rish around Pzingis and that works. I I would, but I think y’all looking at it right now. If we take a step back and not smell the coffee and not look at their last five games against these really bad teams, that [ __ ] ain’t going to work long term. Number one, they number one, did you see how they first looked when they ain’t had no ball handling? They ain’t know who the hell was going to run point. They didn’t know if it was going to be Luke Canard, Nquille. They didn’t know what that [ __ ] didn’t wasn’t looking. They beat they beat the Lakers. They beat the Clippers. They beat Sacramento. They beat Utah. Bad teams. Those are all bad teams. Most bad team. Kings a bad team. The Clippers who the Lakers I think the Lakers are a bad team, too. I know y’all got I I know y’all got for the Lakers, but I think the Lakers I I’ll give you the Lakers. The Clippers, Kings, and Utah. Those are bad teams for sure. Those are those teams worse than the Hawks. I told y’all about the Lakers. Luca got to score 40 for them to win. That’s a bad team. And by the way, they own I don’t know what it is about the Clippers in Los Angeles, but they’ve gone to the I think they I think the last three or four games they’ve gone out there and won. I don’t know what it is about the about the Hawks, but they’ve gone out to Los Angeles and beat the Clippers. Uh Mars, I mean, the Clippers just a bad team right now. Like they’re really bad team right now. Do you have any thoughts uh about Jaylen Johnson last night? Um and how he played? The Jazz are atrocious was my thoughts. I think Jaylen Johnson’s really good, really talented. Um, I think that was true last year. I still think most of his effectiveness comes in transition, which is why I wouldn’t be building around Jaylen Johnson. I don’t think he’s that good in the half court, but when you come up against a Jazz defense who can’t defend anywhere and you get to run out as much as he does, you end up being able to put on monstrous numbers. when you’re one of the best transition players in the NBA. Um, I think last night’s game said like it was a combination of this is how talented Jaylen Johnson is and this is how bad the Utah Jazz defense is. Put that together, you get Jaylen Johnson’s best game of his career. Um, which was really quick question. What what’s the difference between building around the transition point guard and building around the transition wing? Ideally, the transition point guard can actually be effective and run offense in the half court. If they can’t, then I don’t think they’re that valuable either. Sure. Then you’re Yeah. I don’t I don’t know an example of that, but I would assume they’re not that valuable. So, a guy like Tyrese Maxi, who’s an awesome transition league guard, but can also uh orchestrate offense in the half court. Uh is is it is it fair to say that Jaylen Johnson can play in the half court? He’s better in transition, but I think he can play in the half court. What What I’m asking off of someone else? Yeah. Not not as your primary decision maker, but off of someone else. Yeah. which which I was at which I was asking that that’s why I asked the question if I got a wing that’s as good as Jaylen Johnson is as a transition player. Why why is it not a good idea to get him a damn good transition point guard to enhance his game? Cuz he also can play in the half court and also get him a get him a league guard that can play half court basketball really well. I might be an idiot but is that not Trey Young? Only except he’s not saying I don’t know where you were going with that. I thought for sure you talking about Trey Young. Yeah, but sounds like Trey Young to me. Yes, Jaylen Johnson plays good with Trey Young. Why do you Why are y’all? I think he plays fantastic like Jaylen Johnson. It’s not just about Jaylen. I think I think the the Hawks so far and last year they’re not playing well with Trey Young. That I think that’s the problem is like the the team seems to be suffering with Trey Young because I think to your point, you know, Jordan, you I think you saying suffering. Are we talking about four games? No, no, I hear you. But I’m connecting last year because they’re connecting last year because this is where the money stuff comes in. They’re saying over a year plus sample size. You’re he’s supposed to be a great offensive engine. He’s not leading elite offense. I think I think even Mars can attest to that’s just that’s fair. Alen Johnson got hurt last year. I No, no, but but Trey himself should be an offensive engine though. The problem is if your offensive engine, he is, but I think the problem is if your offensive engine, Jordan, and I think this is like basic for you, too. If that dude is shooting 39% from the field for 80% of the season and you’re taking a boatload of shots and you’re having a bunch of turnovers, as you know, that typically doesn’t lead to really good offense. I think the Hawks are saying we were hoping with now, and they’re still hoping, by the way, Jordan, he’ll come back this year. We’re hoping that with a better unit around him, to Chill’s point, watching the team play to Chill’s point, I need to play better, he’ll get into this situation with Risha and Jaylen and Dyson and and uh uh uh Christoph Porzingis, and then then he will play better. But Jordan, I’m asking you, if we get to February or January 15th, the trade deadline, whatever it is, and they’re still booty with Trey Young on the floor, are you are you done? I I would say this. I will say this. I would say this because I I think what you’re saying is kind of true, but also it’s a little unfair to Trey. Now, Trey taking responsibility in this last year, he didn’t shoot the ball well. Like I was one of the first ones saying like me and Mars got into not an argument, but we kind of got into a little debate about can Trey Young shoot and I was saying if he gonna continue to shoot the shots he do, no, he can’t shoot because he shoots some badass shots, which is why he was shooting like 30% from three last year or some [ __ ] like that. uh kind of started off the season the same way. But I will say this, Jaylen Johnson is last year when we was talking about he was gonna be an all-star, that comes from Trey Young. Yes, he’s gotten better. He’s gotten way more confident. Um so, credit to Jaylen Johnson, but you don’t trade Trey Young cuz that’s getting better. And I don’t know if y’all saying that or not. We kind of established that that’s not what Dammo was saying. But at the same time, um Zachary Reese, another player that can benefit off of Trey Young. Um, Mohamed Gay, another player that can benefit off of Trey Young. Porzingis can benefit off of Trey Young. Now, does Trey Young has to buy in, which he can do? Yes, he can buy in. Like, I hope he can buy in. And that’s what the Hawks should be hoping, but to just automatically say they’re suffering when they put Trey Young on the floor from four games and then we gonna say, well, last year, well, last year Jaylen Johnson got hurt. Last year they were, they were hurt. way. The boys don’t get it started. The player choice way.

The Panel get into a debate about whether the Atlanta Hawks should trade Trae Young or not.

  1. He needed more help, got more help….and now you want to trade him? That’s wild.

Anyone else in the league gets hurt and the team maintains and they say “when whoever gets back they can make a real run”.

Trae Young has been carrying the team it’s about time the other guys helped him out and look competent without him.

  2. Trading your best player because your second best player is getting better is stupid. Trae literally the only one that plays well in any of the playoff or play in games

  3. If you think trae young not a number 1 then who on the team you think is a number 1? Nobody on that team is even a number 2 without trae young

  4. As a hawks fan let of break it down for you. Trae in 2021 was a top 3pt shooter in the league so that made up for his other deficiencies. His 3pt shot has fallen off a good amount that's the number one thing that's killing him. That 2021 3pt plus the elite play making made him unstoppable. His jumper is kinda broke now and that's not good for small guard like him. Im on board with a trade. This run we are on is not because we are playing bad teams because we've looked bad against mid teams with him.

  5. It’s honestly alarming with the lack of knowledge and human decency the majority of these guys have. Besides a few y’all just throwing shade talking out y’all ass saying stuff that don’t correlate to this season. We not gonna bring up last year that had a completely different roster + injuries. Blasphemy

  6. Bruh talmbout he been sayin trade Trae since last season, but when Trae got hurt last season, the team didnt play this good. The young guys are finally SEEMINGLY taking the "leap forward" to the potential that's been expected of them when we either acquired them or drafted them. Like the one dude said, this is how the team was supposed to be playing WITH Trae. Plus, Quin is finally giving some of the young guys meaningful minutes.

  7. The fact that the red hoodie guy on here suggest turning TWO potential All-Stars (Trae+JJ) into ONE (JJ) shows just how incredibly stupid he is.

He also says Trae doesn’t win as the number one guy when he went to the conference finals in his THIRD season in the league, which debunked his entire argument. What’s preventing him from doing it again in a weak East?

They put any mouth-breathing idiot in front of a microphone these days
