Kyle Shanahan Evaluates 49ers Loss to the Rams

All right, guys. No injuries. Go ahead. I know there must have been a lot of different things, but what did you see defensively, Kyle? Matter of them being really, really good. Be hard to keep up with that. Uh, yeah, a little bit of both. Um, I mean, we knew it’d be a big challenge going in. Um, you know, we we knew they’re we know how good they are, but we thought we could slow them down and find a way to get off on third down. Um, we obviously didn’t do that very well. Um, we did twice there in the in the first half, got none in the second half. Thought we had a chance down there in the red zone when um when Stafford scrambled, we came up to get him and gave him a touchdown there. Um, but it wasn’t anything really in particular, just not good enough. What was happening on the the 12 men? Um, two times we subbed in dime and we didn’t get a guy off. So, I think one time we didn’t get a call in fast enough. I got a timeout on that and the next time we didn’t. So, it was on us. What was the message to the team in the locker room afterwards? What did you have to say to them? Uh, I just told them guys it wasn’t good enough. Um, you know, as bad as it was at times, you know, I still believe if um, you know, we convert that fourth and one in the first half and we don’t turn it over on the on the other drive, uh, it’s a two-score game and I believe we’re right in that. Um, I believe it could have came down the end if we played a little bit better on offense in the first half. Obviously, we got to get a D’s got to get a stop there in the second half. Um, but I still think we could have made that a game. Um, I believe we got to I told them I believe that we can find a way to win any game that we’re in. Um but if we hurt oursel like that, seven penalties to zero. Um not getting off on third down. I think they were five of five in the red zone and then the offense having two turnovers and they’re having zero. Um you make that pretty tough on yourself. Does that feel like the kind of reality for this team right now that especially for the offense that margin is that much thinner but so much attrition on defense? Um yeah, we all know that it’s a challenge is how many guys they’re missing on D. Um so we tr truly understand that. I know we can do better than what we did today though. Um, and I believe the offense is gonna do better than what they did today. A few times they know it’s on the offense. The defense is missing so many people. Has that been something you’ve said? Is it something maybe you generally agree with that you know you don’t want to just say it’s not on the defense, but because the offense has a lot of guys, it may be coming back that it is a little bit more responsibility on them. Um, I mean I that’s what I expect offensive players to say and I expect defensive players to say the opposite. Um, you know, I I I put it on all three phases though, regardless of the situation. Um, you know, I thought, you know, O did some good things today. Um, but not a good enough to finish that win. Um, the D struggled at times, but they got to just make a couple stops on two drives and I feel like they can give us a chance to win there. Um, so I’m never going to just put it on one side of the ball, but obviously we are wounded at D. Got more guys down over there and, um, that does give the other sides a little bit more of an advantage. How close was Brock to being the backup today? Um, he could have gone. Um, definitely. Um, I just decided to hold him, not put him in that situation. You feel M probably never going to be 100% again this season. Is there at some point do you just have to play him knowing that he’s not going to be 100%? Uh, yes. It depends on how close to 100% he gets. Uh, our dilemma or what we’re trying not to do is put him out in the situation we did versus Jacksonville um, five weeks ago or six, whatever it was. So, I do believe he’s um, closer and further along than what he was at that time. Um, so hopefully he’ll have a chance this week. How’d you feel Mac Jones played today? Uh, it seemed like he played really well. Uh, I thought he got rid of the ball, didn’t get caught with it too much, got the ball to the right spots, and um, definitely gave us a chance to win. Playing better just as he, you know, gets more starts and plays more in this offense. Um, yeah, I mean, I think he played pretty good though early on, you know, so, um, I thought he played really well today, but you know, I thought he did that I want say his first game was vers New Orleans and did the same. and um he’s been he’s been playing real well for us all year. I don’t think they had a sag. Is that was the offensive line’s doing something well, but is that also a reflection on Mac making quick decisions? Yeah, that’s everybody. I thought the O line did really well, especially versus that group. I thought Mack did a really good job getting rid of it and I thought all of our eligibles did a good job getting to the spots. You know, when it when you you know, when you throw it close to 40 times, I’m not sure what we did, maybe 39. um when you throw it that many times versus that type of pass rush, um everyone’s got to be doing a pretty good job um to not give up any sacks.     2017 Solomon Thomas vs Patrick Mahomes. 2020 Gave up DeForest Buckner. Then not puck Javon Kinlow instead of Tristan Whrif
    Ricky Piersol is Good, but does he contributed? Whrer are 2025 High picks at?

    John Lynch made awesome job lower picks, but today's lost is insult by In States Divisional Rivals .

  4. Somebody tell Kyle, "You need to make in-game obvious adjustments!" CMC can't get around the edge. Stop calling it! Be more creative! With ZERO pass rush, gotta play more man/bump & run. Still might lose, but you'll lose like men, not get dog-walked around town. JFC it's like he does it on purpose.

  9. Even if we miraculously make it to the playoffs, we're def losing to the Rams, Seahawks, Colts, Patriots, GB, Broncos, Eagles….so many great teams right now. Hopefully next year will be our year with a healthy team.

  10. Funny: In high-school football it was the same. Offense blamed Offense for losing game and Defense blamed Offense. I thought this was because defensive players are meaner.

  13. Did he really say the D struggled at times??? Are you kidding. They played horrible al ALL times. They only times the Rams didn't score is when they made mistakes. The defense did not impose any will today. "at times" what a joke.

  14. It’s impossible to play the colts, patriots or broncos in the playoffs. They are AFC teams . N not true the 49ers can beat any NFC team if they are healthy. 🤦🏾‍♂️😂

  17. I wouldn't get too excited for this season. This defense is a problem. Stafford was making our secondary look foolish. That's our biggest weakness right now, especially with no pass rush. It just shows how important Bosa was, getting double-teamed and allowing others to rush. Not to mention no Warner. I don't blame the young guys too much, but Lenoir isn't looking good at all right now and other veterans are pedestrian at best. Championship football is won in the trenches and we are sorely lacking on that front, especially on defensive side of ball. Maybe we can hang on to WC birth and make some noise. Ya never know.

  21. NAh!!! The 49ers played well. If you look we won the first meeting because we won the turnover battle. Yesterday was the same. We only lost because of the turnovers. Our defense is degraded but the offense was great, against probably the best defense after Cleveland.

  22. Bro all you so called 49er "fans" complaining in ANY capacity. Especially on our defense. I question their football knowledge. We are literally the league's most injured team and yet getting mad at our Niners as if we don't know that??? One look at a defensive possession and all those missed tackles should let you know. That's not our real legit squad. So shouldn't be so damn harsh when we got future stock brokers on the field.

  26. this was all defense they looked the whole game the way the did in the first quarter of the Giants game. clearly have big holes in the pass rush and controlling the edge also lack leadership in making plays at the linebacker position. just a matter of them facing an OC and team that can take advantage of those giant holes on the Defensive side. fortunately for them still plenty of games left and the rams and Seattle play each other one of those teams will likely lose. doubt it will be a tie. Saleh has his hands full with this. all he can do is hope these guys can grow into the position. Losing Warner is devastating more than Bosa he was the glue that held that D together. An argument could be made at this point the defense cant work without Warner no matter how hard they try

  28. So proud of The 9ERS this season. We have fought through a lot so far and we keep fighting. We are keeping to our mantra ‘Never give up’. Tough year so far with many tough games to come. We just have to keep grinding. Keep up with the pressure. The boys are doing great under some really tough adversity. What doesn’t kill us will only make us stronger. On 3. 1,2,3 – 9ERRRS!

  29. The team has no spine, grit and determination. Terrible defence. With a dubious quarterback and a delusional manager. Not a good time to be a 49ers fan.
