NFL Network’s Kurt Warner: What the Game Tape Says about the Eagles’ Offense | The Rich Eisen Show
We just spent the first uh 15 minutes of the program talking about how AJ Brown’s telling his fantasy owners you should just release me and then u calling what’s going on there an S show and I’m like listen you know this this is just oxygen for the Philadelphia Eagles as they win but what does the film say here? What what is going on with this offense? I feel like we’re it’s like Groundhog Day. I ask you almost once a week what what are you seeing? Like what is it what’s happening here? Uh I mean I I think it’s a little of everything. I mean, it starts with the fact that they’re not dominating up front. And so, you know, they’re not getting the big plays and the big play touchdowns, which really has been, you know, what they’ve been so good at over the last couple years. And obviously, Saquon got a lot of those big plays, but even in the past game, it was a lot of big play touchdowns. And even this year, I think when their offense um has done something, it’s been based off of big plays in the past game. So when they have to when they struggle to run the football and they have to control uh you know offensively by throwing the football and managing the game, they’re just not great at it. And you know Jaylen Herz isn’t necessarily great at that aspect of things. I think he’s really good when his primary guy, his first guy is open. uh he can make every throw and you know we’ve seen the biggest moments him make great throws over and over again and play really well when he’s got to move beyond his first read. Um he struggles a bit and you know he struggles to get there and and he wants to move and create. Um and you know he’s not unique in that. There’s a lot of guys in this league that I feel are very similar where that first guy man they’re really good and then when they have to get beyond that it’s more of a struggle. let’s go create um instead of allowing the offense to come, you know, to him a little bit. And I think that’s where AJ Brown gets frustrated where it’s like, okay, if I’m the primary guy, there’s a really good chance I get the football. But if I’m anything beyond that, then I just feel like I’m just kind of running around and and I’m not getting the ball. And so that’s where I think this offense gets bogged down and gets in trouble is not running the football and not getting big plays. Now, do you have uh the pieces? Are you good enough at that other stuff to be successful? And you know, that has been a real struggle for them and something that they’ve got to figure out if they’re not going to be able to do the things that they did last year on their run. So, uh, Sports Talk Radio question, the line not dominating or the offensive coordinator, which one has more to do with the change from last year to the results we’re seeing now, Kurt? Uh, I mean, it’s hard to say. I mean, I I haven’t studied their run game enough to say, well, are we are we running different run plays? Um, are we running them into the the wrong kind of boxes? Like last year, I felt like they ran their run plays against anything. It didn’t matter and they won and then Saquon made guys miss and got big plays and um and so you know what I’m watching and what I see from a run game standpoint doesn’t appear to be different than what they did last year. Um so I would say it’s more on just you know them not winning in the same way that they did last year. you know, them not, you know, finding a way. And it might be the defenses that they’re playing against. You know, maybe they were out of position, whatever it was last year that allowed, you know, four or five yard run to become a 60 or 70 yard run. And those things aren’t playing out this year. And um you know, so I I just it’s hard for me to believe that they changed their entire run game. Um, you know, we all know sequencing and and play calling. It’s not as easy as just, you know, closing your eyes and and pointing to a play on a, you know, on a piece of paper. Uh, there’s got to be a feel to it. There’s got to be an understanding to what you’re getting and what you’re seeing from other teams. Um, but I I can’t imagine that they’ve changed their run game, that the scheme is all the same that they had last year. It’s just not dominating like it did. Hey, you made it all the way to the end. Maybe AJ brown should try getting open more. He isn’t running free and not getting thrown to he’s just not open like Puka or other WR1s
Play calling…. Monday was bad. Kevin isnt Shane or Kellen…. Shane i think did a really good job at getting people involved and idk.. If they find a OC like Shane and Kellen in one all these complaints will be gone.
The OC and the QB are the biggest issues
The Eagles begin every single series with a handoff to Barkley "for a short gain".
That's a problem that Nick can fix if he wants to but don't just blame Patullo because it's ultimately Nick's issue.
The Eagles need to fire Patullo and hire Doug Pederson.
With all due respect to Kurt, I suspect he hasn't watched recent film, relying on old narratives. Hurts has improved considerably in terms of progressions, footwork, etc. Did last year never happen? He is right that the OL has been a major issue. Injuries etc. Can't effectively zone block, pass pro suspect. That is biggest difference from last year.
to me.. they dont have a rhythm.. jalen is a rhythm QB… you have to get some easy throws to get him flowing.. then he takes off… the run game popping can get him in his mode too…when barkley is getting hit behind the line constantly .. the whole rhythm off the offense goes out of whack. to me from the tape i have seen.. this Eagles run blockin right now may be the worse in the NFL
Every Big Play and Big attempt has been Jalen calling it.. We need a GOOD OC to come and STAY!! he has NEVER had a solid OC stay for him!! and this one SUCKS!! LOL i feel bad for the players…
Just a reminder the national media said all the same things about the Eagles last season.
Looks like Kurt's mascara is bothering his eyes
What is the deal with Kurt Warner and his makeup routine?
Kurt Warner sounds like he literally watched zero tape. Anyone could have given the same bland opinion. These guys are lazy quacks.
AJ Brown is being clouded on every play. Teams are putting 8 in the box, clouding AJ and zoning the rest of the field. So Devonta is feasting. Has been all year. He looks like an All Pro. Goedert is feasting, has been all year. The line is banged up and they are losing the numbers game. The Eagles have adjusted and gonw under center and put an additional lineman on the field, which hurts AJ Brown cause now you only have to cover 2 people and he is still being clouded/double covered on every snap. The answer to thisnqould normally be to throw 50/50 balls and let your guys go get em but Jalen is playing conservative because he is bejng coached to be. So he isnt putting the ball at risk and thus we have to lowest turnover rate in the league and Jalen might set a record for touchdown to interception ratio. We turn on the offense when we need to, and we play ball control in most situations because we are simply better athlestically than 90% of the league. So if we control the chains and time of posession, limit mistakes, play good defense and refuse to give up touchdowns and big plays, force the other team to be patient and eventually get frustrated and make a big mistake, we win. Control time of possession, win the turnover battle, control the tempo of the game, make the other team kick field goals, limit explosive plays, exploit the other teams malaise with the occasional explosive play and win that margin… thats the recipe. Teams wanna be stubborn and cloud AJ and stack the box all game and take the L… thats their buisness.
Disappointed in Kurt. Eagles are not playing tomato cans of nfl each week…unlike a few teams and QBs getting lots of praise. All while Hurts is playing as well or better than nearly every qb…
Offensive line has been banged up all season
So Kurt is saying Jalen can’t get past his first read is hilarious. Like, AJ and Smitty weren’t both 1000 yard WRs before this year
Eagles have played 4 of the top 7! scoring defenses
OL been banged up
New OC never called plays
Yet…
Jalen on pace for best statistical year
Smitty on pace for career year
Goedert has career TDs
7-2
1st in NFC
Great insight Kurt! I wonder if defensive coordinators will start implementing a game plan around this to stop us. Take away Jalen's 1st read and it's over.
Always match lipstick to eye shadow Kurt
They have a new OC who’s green, Saquon is a half a step slower but getting quicker as the season goes on. They will be fine. I think everybody forgets the Eagles were playing in February. The defense is less tired because there’s new pieces, but the offense is still the same people.
😂😂😂Kurt you have lost all credibility. Hurts is absolutely great at dinking and dunking and sustaining drives with short passing plays. The Eagles first drive took nine minutes. Saying Hurts is on read is asinine, because AJ would be forced the ball while being double and triple covered.🤦🏽♂smh
I guess the Eagles played the only low scoring game in NFL history!😅
These guys look for any reason to hate on Hurts and Philly. We have a new OC, defenses sell out to stop Barkley. I have NEVER seen run blitzes on first and second down, and we still move the sticks. When we win. It wasn't by enough. When we win via grinding in the Cold, it's still not enough. Mind you with all of this hate and doubt we are number one in the NFC. Stop the excuses, well IF this happened or IF that happened we would be this or that. It didn't full stop.
i watched the All-22 and I'd say this was mostly Packers defense. The rush was very consistent and very fast, couple times Hurts looked at AJ they dropped help in his direction. they should have more points but Jalen fumbled on an excellent punch out by a packer. the line isnt consistently opening up holes for barkley. some of the 3rd and long play calling by the eagles were horrible. id say the eagles arent playing that great except for their defense but this game alot of that was due to green bay. they will need to improve and do so quickly to match up with the best in the NFC bc they are top seed playing a 7th seed
Kurt doesn't need any more cosmetic surgery😮
So where is it written that you can't ever speak I'll about a coordinator or coach? Just wondering. Good try Rich. I'll say it Kevin Patullo should be calling plays for the middle school intermural team. Not an NFL one
WTH ppl be talking about when it comes to hurts processing. You don’t have success for 5 seasons if you cant play QB. There’s multiple stacked teams that don’t get far because of literal QB collapse.
Kevin is totally out of his depth.
So I guess the TD to Smitty, Smitty was Jalen’s first read on this. Jalen has his flaws just like any other QB but basically calling him a one read QB is disrespectful.
a 'big play touchdown' won the packers game. eagles are like 52-16 for 3 1/2 years … chiefs are 54-16 for 3 1/2 years. just sayin'. not sure what team you have been watching but it is not philadelphia. if a clunker along the way is a problem, mahomes' sb performance is the clunker-of-the-century! kurt looks like he just woke up – almost.
Kurt Warner is a dud… Hurts is better than he ever was
Regardless how silly his makeup always looks, Warner is spot on about the O line for Philadelphia. All QBs need a good O line performance most/all of a game, but the Eagles are more dependent on a better than good dominant performance.
Aj is the primary guy they doubling him which is why Smitty been balling these guys running the same routes every down
This is valid and if you watch him he's actually been working on that more. He's holding the rpo more, he's passing on the run. They also try to hold back to unleash in post season.
Its injuries as to why we struggle up front
Love Hurts but he’s a two read qb…brings a lot of other skills that helps the team
Fake news!
Eagles Repeat Inbound!!!
I love listening to literally everyone talk about the birds like they are 0-9 😂 Dides had ONE really bad game against the giants. Lost to the broncos barely because of poor execution. Yet have beaten the Rams, @ Chiefs, @ Vikings, @ Packers, and @ Bucs. Now, their defense is healthy and stacked and their OL is as healthy as they can be, with a chip on their shoulder to get AJ the ball and have Barkley/Bigsby run like mad men. Can’t wait.
Naioed it Kurt with Jalen. And is what separates him from hall of fame qbs. Movement through progressions and literal brain processing. Brady and Manning were excellent in these categories. Jalen isn't on their level.
Gtfo saying jalen can’t operate if his first read isn’t open is bullshit and literally a fucking lie, just 2 games ago against the Vikings jalen shredded the defense and I guarantee you the first read was not open all game. This disrespect is ridiculous
