Patrick Kane, Lucas Raymond, Todd McLellan Post Game Comments vs BUF | Nov. 15, 2025
in their favor. Where did you see things shift for you guys? Yeah, I mean um you know obviously great second period to put oursel in the position we were in and um you know it’s what can happen in this game. You know you give up a goal, it’s 4-2, it’s a two two goal game and all of a sudden they get some life. Do you feel like you guys got a little loose with it maybe up 4-1 or into the third? Um yeah, I mean I’m not I might have to kind of see things over again. I’m not really sure, but um you know, that should be a fun time to play hockey. You know, you lock it down. You know, they’re an offensive team with um defenseman that can jump in. You you do your job defensively and um you’re going to end up getting oddman rushes the other way. So, um maybe we had a couple of those, but didn’t uh didn’t make the most of them. Todd has talked about needing to respond faster and things start going ary. You think that was a situation like that tonight? Yeah, for sure. I mean, um, obviously you had a chance 4-3 on the power play to, uh, to, um, you know, put the game out of reach and, uh, we got shortand a goal. Like, that’s just those are just things that are, you know, unacceptable that we have to learn. So, um, you know, it hurts in the moment, but hopefully we can learn from it. You’ve been on a lot of good teams in your career. Are there things that this team still needs to learn about how to put these games away? Yeah. Yeah, it seems to be a struggle for us. So, um, you know, like I said, that should be the the best time to play hockey. You know, you just shut it down and you do your job defensively and, um, you know, try to give him nothing and you’re going to get your chances the other way. It was just your immediate reaction to that one. How do you describe where you guys went wrong? Yeah, I mean it’s just uh you know we have 4-1 4-1 lead with um not a lot to go in in the second period and um let them in with with the 4-2 goal and then um you know not good enough in the third. So um yeah, not good enough by our standards uh anywhere near it. What do you think you guys struggle sometimes to put teams away? Um I don’t know. Uh I think for us it’s uh we got to keep playing our game. We got to keep playing on our toes uh but uh under control. We we can’t be diving in our pucks and um tonight was was self-inflicted for sure and we we gave up chances that that you’re not supposed to do in a third period with a twogoal lead. So um regrouped quick and we got New York tomorrow. In the third there I mean did it look like you guys were just kind of protecting a lead or or not playing your game that that you that helped you build that three-goal lead? Uh both yes and no. I mean, obviously, I think it kind of come becomes uh natural that you might not play the exact same way, but um you know, maybe we sat back a little too much. I don’t know. It’s tough to say uh right after without looking at it, but um I think for us, we we we’re a really good team. We’re going to be in the uh in the lead a lot of times and uh we got to learn how to how to deal with it and be able to close games out. What kind of things are being said on the bench when the lead is disappearing there in the third period? I mean, you just try to stay poised. you try to, you know, keep reminding us that that we have to stick to our game. We have to play our game. We can’t sit back and and let them come at us. We got to we got to go after them. So, um you you you try like um you know, you go into the third period with mentality to to win a hockey game, right? You want to protect that lead, but but we got to do it in a smart and mature way and uh did not do that tonight. Losing Sim in the third, how did that impact things? Uh yeah, I mean, obviously Sam’s a good player and uh you know, big in our team. So, um, never fun losing the player. Todd, did you do enough to or your team does enough to build a three-goal lead? And what did what did you see from Buffalo that allowed them to get back into this one and kind of start to Not Buffalo, Detroit. That’s that’s where we were paying attention to it. And take you all the way back to Traverse City. A lot of you were there. And we on that day we started talking about game management and learning how to play certain situations. Um clearly we haven’t leared that yet. Um I don’t even know if you could write a script like that. We we’re we’re short-handed and we’re trying to score and creating turnovers. Like until this group figures out what’s important at certain times of the game, we’re going to have those nights. Simple as that. Todd, why do you think it is so hard for this team to close out opponents? Um, I’m not sure that that at times we value um or crave the the the shutdown part. Uh I I think it’s always about getting the next goal. And yes, it’d be nice to get the next goal, but preventing the next one is is equally as important and sometimes even more timely. And I’m not sure that we’ve figured that out. Um, yeah. And uh, what’s the status on Simon? He’s fine. I think it was a lot of the same guys on the ice for the goals against late as it was to kind of built the lead. like is there is there a situation ever where guys can feel kind of too good about themselves and kind of try to keep it rolling or um well maybe they get maybe they feel good about their game and they start to get cute. Um I don’t know if that was the case. The the power play early I thought was direct. I thought it was effective. I thought it uh it created chaos for the other team off shots and and gathering and all a sudden we things open up for us. I thought our power play late was upside down again. We’re looking for plays. So, we got to get back to that. And giving up a shorty is, you know, when when the momentum’s starting to swing their way, that’s a a you know, Bermuda triangle death trap, I guess, if you want to call it that. But not very uh productive. You’ve used the phrase it’s between the ears multiple times dating back from training camp. Is it just an issue of needing just a stronger mental fortitude to try to close these style of games out? I guess that would come into play. But just just understanding what’s happening and what’s important in in certain moments like we have D that are joining a rush. Uh we’re up by two with seven minutes left and it’s a risky rush. Does that that just makes no sense to me. Um we have penalty killers that you know we’re throwing pucks back towards our end hoping to get a shot on goal in their end and turning it over for a breakaway. We’ve got Simon was on the ice tonight and he let Cat take their 50 goal scorer who’s 6’7 instead of him coming to play. like I don’t know what happens sometimes, but those are all game management situations. It was one versus two. So, is that mental between the years? Probably. Uh, but until we value it and we figure it out, we’ll pro be talking about this again. And then how would you rate Gibby’s performance tonight? Thought Gibby was very good. um you know didn’t have to do much for for half the game even till about the the 4-minute mark of the remaining in the second period and then you really had to be good. We made some uh as I said game management mistakes and um you know it could have got to the point where we weren’t even able to get a point but um he played well. Uh Todd, just what is the balance between when you’ve got like a twogoal lead in the third period of you don’t want to sit back too much, but you also you don’t want to take chances. I mean, what how difficult play solid smart hockey. That’s that’s absolutely it. You know, if we if we have a rush, we don’t turn the puck over. If we’re pinching, we have somebody cover. If we’re uh if we’re two feet from the line and it’s a it’s a loose puck, let’s work hard just to gain the line. We don’t have to make a play. Just gain the line and live live another day. Um you know, so that’s just solid, smart, situational hockey. Todd, when Buffalo got that second goal, could you sense then that your team was going to play or was playing a little bit differently or did you sense it even before then? No, I I didn’t sense uh before that. Um, you know, you take that that second goal for example. We uh we iced the puck right before and we can make a simple play. I think it was Casper to Finny. Can make a simple play, but he elevates the puck. It doesn’t need to be elevated. It could have stayed on the ice. It could have been a nice bank pass right to the right to Finny. Now, we don’t have an icing. We get a change and um get fresh people out. So, we had some tired people. We didn’t have the center on the ice that we really wanted to. We lost the drawn. It’s in our net now. You could feel the momentum, but not prior.

Also, hilarious that they strip the A from Kane to give it to Raymond and Mo full time, but Kane is the face of the team in the postgame interview after a disaster loss where he played great despite being buried w awful linemates. The same game where Mo Seider had a nightmare bad play to give up a shortie. But Mo isn't on here. It's Kane.
Nice.
How can the wings destroy a first place team, and constantly lose to last place teams? This is getting embarrassing. Get Gibson out of goal.
Oh of course captain sad sack Larkin isn't interviewed…he's busy probably pouting like he always does when this happens.
All this and will never get the first round pick… you can’t lose at home to Buffalo, literally the worst team in the league…
This team is just not any good
The lack of elite talent really shows.
Great play Seider!!!
Keep taking penalties Edvinsson
Gibson, can you make any big saves?
Kasper, where did you go?
This team is a joke, 4-1 lead and blew it to the Sabers!!!
I can’t understand such disinterested, uninspired hockey. It is shameful. I am done watching the RWs this season.
Yzerplan baby!!
Wings proving they are the worst team in the entire league again. 🤦🏻
Todd needs to be harder on the team
Todd said Gibby was good. Hear that Steve 😂. Those extra saves you're talking about 😅
Great job Detroit at not being able to play situational hockey yet again.
Many errors but please answer me why over and over the D get caught pinching. Up by 2, 3rd period. 15 minutes left and why do you only have 1 Dman back.
HEY WINGS! ARE YOU SICK AND TIRED OF SUCKING YET?!
NINE YEARS OF THIS SHIT!
HEY SEIDER STOP PINCHING IN WHEN YOU’RE THE ONLY D ON ICE! F@CK!
The roster gaps are obvious. No second center, 1.5 good D ( on a good day), 1.5 scoring wingers… 3rd and 4th lines we just don’t have them. Todd is squeezing what he can from them, but boy, this is a weak team
Gibby was trash
I'm ready to see Cossa when he's healthy.
I don’t understand teams that try to “protect” the lead. The score is 4-1, you got to 4 goals by pushing hard every shift, why not try and make it 5-1? 6-1? 10-1? They took their foot off the gas and paid for it.
Seider was BRUTAL!!
Sorry, Chiarot is poor to. Defense men as a group not smart players and /or poorly coached.
Pathetic effort after buffalos timeout
Zero leadership. Good thing they didn't interview Larkin. He might have cried
Not excited for a full season of Gibson. He plays periods not hockey games. And he's completely awful on break always and 2 on 1's!
Why are we so cocky we haven't made the playoffs since the Obama administration
Tage Thompson is a beast! A monster on skates just throwing our guys around like dolls!
How do you blow a 4-1 lead and then lose in overtime like that, its embarrassing. Seider needs to be taken off of PP1 for Pellika or Edvinsson instead if were gonna lose like that. Kasper the actual ghost has 3 goals and 3 total points through 18 games of mainly top 6 play with Kane and Debrincat. Sophomore slump or not thats unacceptable.
Kane's next game would be game 10, would hit a $2.5 mil bonus.
Once he does that, he should ask for a trade. Florida would be ideal.
People complaining about this loss need to realize this happens when you had a defense featuring 5 guys aged 25 or younger and 3 of them are either rookies or 2nd year guys. The majority of our aging vets are on deals that expire this season, which gives more room to the youth when more guys are ready. There is a plan in place. Draft lottery didn't bless us like it has so many other teams. We have dropped more spots in the draft than any other organization has. With that, you aren't able to get some of the more premium guys. Also didn't help chris illitch demanded we try to make the team more competitive after the 2021-2022 season because over 30% of nhl revenue is in ticket sales and a team that is bottom 5 in the league doesn't sell tickets well in most places outside of canada. Doesn't help neither when the owner refuses to give out signing bonuses which the all of the higher end free agents love. Look at any guy who was a unrestricted free agent who signed with a new team that makes over 7.5 million a year. You will find hardly none of those guys didn't get a signing bonus. Meanwhile the last 5 guys to receive a signing bonus that weren't entry level contracts were veleno, rasmussen, copp, chiarot and perron. Notice 3 of those guys came from the 2022 free agency class and were only paid 1 million each the first year of their deals only and the other 2 were restricted free agents given only 500k the first year of their deal extensions. Not even raymond nor seider received a signing bonus. Neither did larkin the captain and the best player the wings had at the time. No other team has spent so little on signing bonuses for free agents. Our owner is a cheap ass who won't pay out. Look at the tigers which he owns as well. Skubal wins a cy young award and was offered a deal that wouldn't even put him in the top 10 highest paid pitchers at the time for average annual value. They didn't add at the trade deadline neither and were middle of the pack for players payroll. The red wings are top 5 for most cap space currently. They won't spend the money because chris is not like his father. He is cheap.
🗑️
This is the 2nd straight Red Wings coach who has refused to see Patrick Kane as Patrick Kane, refused to treat him like he's Kane. Marginalizing him, disrespecting him deliberately. Not wanting him to be the main character. Now even totally burying him in OT to keep him from being the main character or making it his team or having hero moments.
They don't just want to win, they want to win but not bc of Kane.
Good luck w that. If you have him on your team, he is there to be a hero. It's especially funny bc this team has no other heroes on it. The guys they want to step up and be that guy? They're not that guy. So I guess they'd rather just lose and lose and lose than have Kane co-host the show.
Love the Red Wings, but this team is soft. They tantalize you by running off a few wins, but then they give it right back. Three out of a possible eight points on their home stand. This is the kind of result that is going to keep them out of the playoffs again.
Gibson is the worst Goaltender in the league. Expecting the defense to play perfectly for 60 minutes is an impossible task. The net minder HAS to be able to save a puck. I've watched every single team all year and EVERY single goaltender is more prepared and has better reads almost at all times than gibson. He needs to be released so that we can begin developing Cossa AS SOON AS COSSA IS HEALTHY.
Pretty hard to get two points when your top pair defenceman play like that.
Overall a disappointing game. I do think Pellikka should be PP1 over Seider, atleast for the time being as he’s a much more offensive D-man, and Seider continues to give up break aways on the PP. I’m really liking how Raymond has been playing, he’s Reminds me a lot of Igor Larionov, he does have a deadly shot though and I do wish he’d shoot more. Debrincat has been Pairing with Raymond’s Playmaking on the top line really well. We need to fill in Holes but I think making wild card or 3rd in the division is a possibility especially with how inconsistent the teams in our division are. I do expect us to get much more competitive next season, As Raymond and Mo will be entering their Prime, Pellikka has been given the chance to play at the NHL level we will see Nygard, who will be much better next season. The players I’m most concerned with right now are Finnie because he hasn’t had any points lately and Kasper for the same reason. Idk those are my thoughts
Gibson sucked. Why bullshit?
I don't even bother with the post game player interviews cuz it's all cliche answers every loss. The only one intelligent enough to give an answer of what is really going on is Todd. This was frustrating as hell.
It's clear this team isn't worth watching or paying to see a game this year. ESPN+ can go without my money this year
Kane looks and sounds completely checked out on the team – he's almost commenting on it as if he's an outsider, like he did after the 23-24 season in his exit interview. Hope this means he's looking elsewhere.
Also he throws shade there subtly/not so subtly at the 'top line'.
Can’t wait to lose to the rangers tomorrow!
Got cocky and lost it. I still believe. Let’s go boys
