Stuck in the middle: Steelers keep chasing wins, not a future

  1. I’m almost tired of these kinds of articles because it’s nothing a lot of us don’t already know. Seriously, this team is probably the only one in the league where everyone knows how the season will end and it’s thanks to Tomlin and Rooney.

But hey, we’ll finish above .500 again, and because of that we’re apparently supposed to keep quiet, be satisfied with mediocrity, and not expect any improvement or further success.

  2. The Steelers need a new identity. Smash mouth will not work in the modern NFL. The rules have made that type of play obsolete.

That vision has to come from ownership and management. Either they are too dumb to realize that or are ok with the status quo. It should include moving on from Tomlin, but if they try the same thing with another coach we will probably be even worse (see Giants).

Considering Art has been in charge for almost 10 years I just don’t think he is that guy and this is our ceiling at the moment.

    Sucks to suck.

  3. “As such, Pittsburgh is a test case of what has become a defining question in modern pro sports: would you rather be consistently decent, or crash out so you can potentially become great?”

Pittsburgh answered that question long ago.

  4. Tanking doesn’t work, sends the wrong message, and there’s never a guarantee you get can get whatever mojo you have back.

  5. Khan has done a great job drafting since he has taken over- the team is in good hands. Still a lot of football to be played this season.

  6. This article was clearly written but someone with no knowledge of the team. Nearly every move that’s been made by the FO has clearly shown they are not putting their eggs into the basket of 2025 and that they want to address the QB situation. Listen to DK, the drive or any other long time reporter/insiders and you learn that there are people in the org that want to address QB and that it’s almost a certainty that it will be addressed in the draft. They aren’t going to use all 13 picks on 13 players.

  7. I would love to see how this fan base reacts to a 3-4 win season followed by the drafting of a QB like Ward who looks awful because the rest of the team is garbage only to do it all over again in 2-3 years.

  8. Dumb article. Most fans don’t even realize that they’re in the middle of a rebuild.

It’s frustrating going 10-7 during the rebuild, I guess.

  9. The team has expended little to no draft capital and doesn’t have much cash tied up long term. What makes anyone think they aren’t looking to the future just because they are maximizing short term assets to win instead of tanking?

  10. Can anyone name an NFL team in recent memory that was mediocre, intentionally imploded, and was then better for it?

  11. The Steelers need to finish under 500 and miss the playoffs. You may get some changes that way but who really knows?

  12. And next year they will go out and sign another QB once Rodgers retires and it will be the same old shit next season too

  13. I thought, going into this season, that we were going to be an unmitigated disaster and here we are leading the division! You had to draft Harmon- which has been a great pick and you had to draft Jones- who has come a long way. We are in much better shape than anyone else in the division. Just need to stay healthy.

  14. Couldn’t disagree more. This is clickbait. Regardless of how disappointing this season is, Khan has assembled the best team he could without giving up draft picks. We have the ability to make moves for our QB of the future. The offensive line has 4 out of 5 players drafted within the past 3 years (they’re young). Outside of Rodgers, the entire offense is young.

  15. I don’t get what it’s trying to say in order to make it to the playoffs to get the trophy you want you have to win. Always chasing the future leaves you like the Browns.

  16. I mean, they have invested heavily in the offensive and defensive lines the last 3 drafts. That is a solid plan for the future.

  17. This is the season that broke me. I was initially interested with Rodger’s coming on, but all the signs were there that it would be business as usual with the under performing defense, the barely hanging on at the end of games, horrible game plans – I just don’t feel it anymore with this team. I haven’t planned anything around a Steelers game this season at all, and I don’t feel like I’ve missed a thing. It’s upsetting because the Steelers were always more than a Sunday afternoon distraction for me- they were an integral part of how my family bonded. I’ve been a fan since the 70’s so no doubt I’m spoiled, but it’s been like watching the same movie over and over for 10 years, at some point you’ll lose your enthusiasm. I’m not planning on jumping back in until something seismic happens- Rooney and Tomlin have turned me into a fair weather fan and I guess I’m bitter about it.

  18. I’ve been a Steelers fan since 1976. I am so disgusted with Tomlin. He cannot win the big games or build a championship teams. He squandered the Killer Bs era. He must go.

  19. 5 of Tomlin’s 8 playoff wins are from 2008-2010.
Killer B’s era had no defense and when the defense was good, the offense sucked.
Now the team is front loaded with geriatrics. The equivalent of a black and white TV in a world of LED’s.

  20. For sure. It’s getting delusional, actually. Sure you want to keep a winning culture but not at the expense of building a contending team.

  21. No losing seasons! The standard is the standard! Can’t win a Super Bowl if you can’t get to the playoffs!

  22. I’m not even reading this shit. Nobody in their right mind can see how many draft picks and how much salary cap space the Steelers have coming up and proclaim that the team has no future.
